The place where I live is just 20km from where Javan rhinos used to be found 150 years ago. It was also called Sundrban Dwarf rhino here. They are present everywhere, in our stories, folk music, childhood fables, rhymes and everywhere, but they are not there and they can never return from the place we have sent them. It is so heartbreaking, when you grow up and hear the creatures that made your childhood awesome, are actually long gone. And you look at the empty forests and think, "ah this is how they would look there, eating leaves from mangrove", or "yeah they would look so awesome in this green water". This should never happen any where.

Javan Rhino still exist in Ujung Kulon National park. in the western tip of the island of Java. google it. it is still a virgin rain forest, and it is protected by the government... The only endangering to the Rhinos there is the krakatoa volcano, and the super thick forest that even the sun light can't reach the ground.

@fatirkuh

Yes this is a big loss my dude. But remember that yesterday is over, we must look to the present and appreciate what we have. Unfortunately, overhunting was the cause of this extinction. And for all the remaining rhinos, the same problem, the threat still remains. As an individual, the most important thing for you to do is to tell your people how wonderful these creatures are and to tell them that if hunting continues, there won't be another rhino that they will ever see. We, whatever we say, can all do something by warning and educating people in our own geographies. Our hands cannot reach other geographies even if we wanted to. I hope your people best understand and protect the value of this animal. There are 3 subspecies of the Java rhino, and only one subspecies currently survives. We can't do anything about the extinct two for now, but we must at least protect the only remaining subspecies.

They did go extinct, think about evolution like this: If there were 5 wooly rhinos and 1 of them evolves a mutation to make it a ‘nonwooly’ rhino, the 4 wooly rhinos are still left. They don’t all turn into wooly rhinos, yes they do breed as long as their species is still the same, but once they can’t breed anymore, they’re two separate species and one can no longer turn into the other. They could evolve again and be similar (called convergent evolution) but this is not the same.
@pepesylvia848
@pepesylvia848 3 жыл бұрын
@@ravinchowdhury5215 That's not how it works. Individuals can't become something new. Populations change. They're not extinct. If you manage to clone a frozen wooly rhino, it's extremely likely it'll be able to breed with existing species, which means they haven't diverged enough at all.

This video has one major inaccuracy in it. Woolly rhinoceroses are a relatively close extinct relative of the Sumatran rhinoceros, but not it's ancestor. For perspective, the Sumatran rhinoceros and the woolly rhinoceros are as closely related to eachother as the Asian elephant and woolly mammoth are to each other.

The problem is that when a species reach such low numbers they are, technically extinct, regardless of the few survivors that still may exist: such low genetic diversity is not adequate to sustain long time survival (and adequate genetic pools gives a species chances to survive and adapt to changes, diseases, etc.). We may be happy to see them around (because for us a couple of centuries is a lot of time) but that isn't evolutionary enduring time. Whatever genetic defects that the little group may carry gets potentiated, too. Imagine if the entire human population was formed by one single family and their cousins that mate among themselves over and over again: whatever sickness that's in the family reaches heights you won't see if they weren't inbred, plus if such family is prone (let's say) to certain allergies, then they are specially weakened. They all would look quite unhealthy and for a good reason (in animals we don't have the familiarity to tell the difference, especially on animals that are on the brink).

Malaysia declared their Bornean rhinos extinct in 2015, but some 10-15 animals were spotted in camera traps just the next year. Unfortunately, there are too few Bornean rhinos for purism - where conservationists want to keep virtually identical subspecies pure at all costs, leading to even worse inbreeding, which leads to lower fertility and poorer health. If the Bornean and Sumatran rhinos (same species, different islands) can be crossed, they can both have a future. Their ancestors haven't met in thousands of years, so it would give both of them a good boost to the gene pool.

It's not fair to imply they're descended from woolly rhinos. The latter died out only 10 000 years ago, and were enormous beasts with huge horns, built entirely for the tundra. The Sumatran is the closest living relative of the woolly, but they're not descended from them. They might have split from the other rhinos over 20 million years ago, as another branch in the rhino family tree.

Yes I know, but in Ujung Kulon it is only a place to live for Javan rhinos and is also vulnerable to natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanoes.

Nope, the species is actually too small now, we need a lot more embryos, sperm, research and DNA to confirm any more specimens, the Northern white rhino has sperm and tissue preserved. Not sure about this one.

Hopefully the sumatran rhinos (much like the orangutan) will be able to repopulate enough to reclaim the Indonesian islands and maybe one day reintroduce them to the Malaysian islands where their Malaysian cousins once roamed. 🦏🦧
