The Temple of Time is one of the most frequented locations in Ocarina of Time. Just off the Hyrule Town Square sits a sacred, holy place, that not only contains the Master Sword, but has an equally divine piece of music to accompany it. But what inspired the development team behind Ocarina of Time to design the Temple of Time this way, and how did Koji Kondo compose the music for the Temple of Time's Theme? The Answer, may not surprise you, taking inspiration from Gregorian Chant! Please enjoy the next entry in our Zelda music analysis series on The Temple of Time. This time we focus on Ocarina of Time's Temple of Time and the Temple of Time's Music Theory Analysis. Around minute 16, you play the 3rd phrase of the Temple of Time theme, and the scored note in measure 3 of that line is a low C, but the audio is a D. Not trying to be pedantic, but just wanted to share since that's another example of the final appearing in the piece!

Played the original as a kid. I was capable of beating the early temples and bosses easy enough, but without a guide I was relying on asking my friend at school where to go next. The times I didn't know where to go next, I'd go to the temple wondering why it was so empty, what was behind the door, what was the secret of it? All with that atmospheric chant in the background. It felt very special. Ahhh the days you couldn't watch a walkthrough and no choice but to truly get lost in a game.

.. funny enough, someone already did a video of that exact concept you mentioned. Although, I'm always game to see other musically inclined people put their own takes and input on their interpretation of the artform! {: Edit: It's actually mentioned in the video. The video by 8-bit covers this very idea. Edit #2: I'm dumb. That's a different video, but same person. 8-bit did a whole spiel on the brilliance of writing a bunch of melodies using only five notes. It's actually given me some ideas in my own compositional journey!

@@Risen907 I know it's a cliche phrase, but "Restrictions Breed Creativity" is pretty true of most of the arts. Whether you're a creative writer who does daily writing prompts to focus yourself or a music composer restricting yourself to composing using only three instruments (to emulate how 8-bit music only had three channels), oftentimes those restrictions really force the creative mind to go above and beyond in order to produce within the limits. Although, admittedly, it is pretty stressful as well when you're also on a time crunch.

The Temple of Time always felt like a special place. I would often just slow walk through the hall just to take in the song and ambiance. It’s honestly astonishing to recognise what an achievement the songs were in OOT, especially when you learn just how many limitations there were. I can still instantly recall at least half of the songs from OOT some 25 years later.

When I was a kid playing on the N64, any time I got frustrated with a dungeon or scared by a certain area's ambiance (lookin' at you, Tomb of the Royal Family), I'd take a break from OoT's main story and just go vibe in the Temple of Time. It reminded me of the cathedral where my parents and I attended Mass every week, so it was familiar and soothing to me, without losing any of its grandeur or mystery. I've loved all the videos in this series, but I'm especially happy that the Temple of Time was the subject of your triumphant return to these essays. Really looking forward to more!

@@gracenote108 It's an area beneath Kakariko Graveyard. You reach it by playing Zelda's Lullaby in front of the Royal Family's gravestone. Making your way through it rewards you with the Sun's Song, which freezes Re-Deads and allows you to skip forward to either morning or night. The Tomb mostly terrified me as a kid because of the aforementioned Re-Deads lol.

I think using 5 notes for many of the songs worked in their favor. The songs are simple, beautiful, and most of all memorable. Limitation often breeds creativity and I definitely think that is the case here. The music in OoT is probably my favorite of any game ever. It just adds so much. I also love how you can change the pitch of the ocarina with the joystick. Adding that was a nice little tidbit that they could have easily foregone, and I'm glad they didnt.

Very cool to see this series return! The Temple of Time music is definitely one of the most memorable tracks to originate in OOT, and I love how the simpleness of it plays so well into its use ingame as the Song of Time. So many Bible spoilers in this video!

The Temple of Time was such a cool place with an absolutely breathtaking theme. The devs knew this too, since when you revisit it in Twilight Princess they reuse the exact same theme for the beginning area of the Temple.

Early Christian churches didn’t have seats or pews. They came in during the 16th century. Go into most Orthodox churches today and they don’t have pews. So the layout of the Temple of Time resembles a church more than most actual churches!

I've always loved how this song can feel so haunting, yet strangly calming at the same time. It really is the perfect atmospheric piece. And Koji Kondo was a genius. I can't imagine how much time and effort must have gone into this. All the history was really interesting, especially about the architecture of the temple. Sometimes simple works best. I needed a church song for my DnD campaign and was looking all over for it. I eventually came across a half hour long version of a remix of this song. Yeah, hearing that while walking into a large basilica housing a dragon skeleton revered as a holy creature has an impact.

As someone who sings Gregorian chant every Sunday, this was well done! Thank you for taking the time to look into it as remains my favorite music to sing. One thing I love in the chant notation is that all of the notes are relative, so it is very easy to change the starting pitch to fit your group.

Aside from the fact that domes were actually rediscovered back in the Early/High Renaissance period by Brunelleschi, most of the history research for this video is spot on! Really appreciate the beauty of the Legend of Zelda looking at it from a deeper, historical perspective :D

So happy to see another one of these videos. This series is one of my personal favorites on this channel. I also really like the attention to some of the historical details regarding both the temple's design and the in game music. The parallels to churches and cathedrals for the temple are very fitting considering that in the German translation of the game (that being the version I grew up with) the temple of time is called the "citadel of time" The same goes for the song of time, with it being compared to hymns. Because once again, in the German translation the track is straight up called "the hymn of time" Really makes me appreciate and love the German translation even more. And massive props to the translators for putting in so much detail regarding architecture history. (I think at least. I'm not really into architecture)

Also liked the background information on the church history and construction that influenced the Temple of Time environment design. If you do another one of these, I would LOVE it if you did an analysis of the soundtrack, Final Hours from Majora's Mask. Years ago, I once attended evening mass at St. James Cathedral in Seattle on Saturday night. After mass was over, it's common for some people to stick around for a bit and pray. I listened to this track on my ipod and just sat in the dim, spacious Cathedral. It is a very fond memory. I have always loved this track.

Small correction at 12:47 (apologies if others have already pointed this out). Time signatures don't indicate the tempo, they merely indicate the number of beats per measure, and the length value of each beat. The tempo is however indicated just above the time signature. In the case of your example, using the phrase "Allegro moderato," which suggests a moderately brisk tempo (anywhere from 96-120 bpm). Some sheet music may specify the exact bpm (beats per minute) if the composer wants. That aside, stellar content! I love music analyses like this.

This theme holds so much for me personally. It would always be the very first thing I’d heard booting up the game after a long week. I played this game for an incredibly long time on my first experience and as such, this theme got essentially engraved in my brain and I look back at it with a feeling of nostalgia, and eagerness to get back into the world of Hyrule to see what I could complete.

I love these videos. I've watched each one multiple times! Looking forward to the next one (fingers crossed there will be more). One quick thing though, at 15:56 the note shows a "C" but a "D" is heard. That note matches the last note in pitch but is written differently. As a kid my mind would go wild while listening to this game's soundtrack. This particular track always made me think of the middle ages where monks are singing gregorian chants in a mysterious castle that might be otherworldly or exist outside time and space. It's really hard to put into words but it still transports me far away from daily life and the current moment.
