I'm surprised you never mentioned the fact that a British guy stayed on that rock for a certain length of time in order to enhance the claim on the rock ! Probably in the 80's
@nevyen149
@nevyen149 5 жыл бұрын
His name was Tom McClean. He stayed from May 26th to July 4th, 1985, and did the entire stay with an ankle he broke on arrival.
@nevyen149
@nevyen149 5 жыл бұрын
@Bob 1 He still has his ankle. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for your sense of humor.
@nevyen149
@nevyen149 5 жыл бұрын
@Bob 1 You're judging my sense of humor from 1 (one) single factual comment, and a response based on your poor reading comprehension skills? You know jack shit about me, so your opinion on the subject carries no weight, and has about the impact of a fart against a hurricane. Check the rock yourself, you'll find it about 6 inches above your shoulders, right behind your eyes.

@Bob 1 I think he meant "uncle".. and let's not go into details of what his "breaking" involved.

I’ve never seen an Irish claim to the rock based on fishermen from Donegal. Have you got a source for that? I don’t think Ireland has ever laid a formal claim. Ireland as a state has never claimed Rockall, though there have been actions by Irish people that could constitute a claim in the future. There are common stories of landings and it has a place in myths and legends. Ireland has claimed the seabed around the rock and has never recognized the UK’s ownership of it. Though, both came to agreement in the 70s over the seabed. Rockall is regularly policed by the Irish Navy. The fishermen thing is a common wives tail. You’ll find it easily, but i wouldn’t put too much credibility on it. It is a very interesting subject which has continued to be a point of contention between the various parties. if its habitable then they can extend the EEZ further out, meaning more area to fish and more importantly look for minerals/oil, there are a number of important rare earth metals used in computer circuitry, if oil or these mineral were found near the island under the ocean bed it would be legally Britains. same reason china is fighting for the south china sea.

@LagiNaLangAko23 they'd still fight over rocks, it's not the number of people that's the problem, it's our entire ethos and mentality as a species that needs to change, we're dragging so much primitive thinking with us into a time where it's not only not needed but is actually damaging to us as a whole; a plague won't help that.

Rockall is defined as a rock rather than an island as an island must have either flat ground, vegetation or permanent inhabitants and Rockall has neither, but one of those three can be changed to make it an island. Like: imagine you have roommate who's decided he's going to draw a line down the middle of the room to specify who's section is who's and then months later is secretly trying to claim the bathroom, which was shared, as his because he uses it more. I always laugh when people say the British lost their empire. It's not like the Australians, new zealanders, canadians and even the americans haven't had their back every time they've needed it no questions asked. Instead of controlling their empire by force they just use persuasion. Then they have the huge list of commonwealth countries that they help out economically. This is before mentioning the islands and millitary bases they have strategically all over the world. Their empire still exists it just is hiddden from view and opperates in a more friendly way using their common interests to persuade former colonies to do their bidding and using their cultural exports (music, movies etc) to gain support from other countries.

But we never 'lost' the Empire. We liberalised and came to the conclusion that oppressing people is bad. We didn't lose it, we moved on.

Yes, you did lose the empire to us. Not only did we earn our freeedom against your will, but you also passed the torch of global superpowe to the U.S. after WW2 bc you couldn't afford to keep your territories when so much of your nation was airbombed by German planes and your economy tanked. The U.S. is the greatest empire ever. 🍟

It wasnt about liberalising bc "oppression is bad", but you learned your lesson after dealing with America that you realized it wasnt worth keeping people attached against their will bc of riots and a lack of cooperation, not to mention recurring war. Yoy saw the unlikely victory of the U.S. as a sign that no matter how weak a colony may seem, patriotism is an expensive and formidable opponent to fight. Why bother, when you were already in war debts (including our war) and you wouldn't be able to do much with a resentful-even-if-conquered people?
