Why the US waits so long to swear in the new president

Does it really have to take two and a half months?
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
American law specifies that the US presidential election happens in early November. It also specifies that the winner of that election isn’t actually sworn in until January 20th. That leaves about two and a half months in between, where, in situations where the incumbent has been voted out, the winner of the election still isn’t president. This is the “transition” period, during which the old administration trades places with the new one.
But does that period really need to be so long? In 2020, we found out what happens when an incumbent president loses reelection, but refuses to concede: Among other things, it pushes the start of the transition several weeks later, shortening that handover period. So does that matter? What actually happens in those two and a half months, and why do we let the loser continue to wield power for so long?
Read more about the US presidential transition from Vox reporter Jen Kirby: www.vox.com/2020/11/23/216119...

I think that part of the problem is that so many administrative positions are political appointees. In other countries, the Civil Service, the heads of the Armed Forces and even the head of the Post Office are all neutral posts. If you have to change thousands of personnel every time the leader changes, then no wonder the system is slow.

@@trevorbishop5189 Just short of 40% of the popular vote, despite the "4 way major party split" in that election, and the Republican Party not being on the ballot AT ALL in most of the future Confederate states - and despite that latter fact, and South Carolina not having a popular vote at all, he still managed 180 out of 303 electorial votes thus avoiding a House "runoff". Douglas was the only other candidate in shouting distance, at just under 30% of the popular vote. BTW - Lincoln was only the SECOND lowest "popular vote" President in history so far and at least had a PLURALITY of the vote in HIS election. John Quincy Adams in 1824 had less than 31% AND LESS THAN ANDREW JACKSON at 40%+ of the vote in that election (Jackson also had the plurality of the electoral votes). Nobody had an outright majority of the Electoral College though which threw the election into the House. Henry Clay (the "dropped" 4'th place candidate) threw his support to Adams, and that was enough to put Adams over the top in the House.

Broadly speaking, European governments have governmental professionals who remain through transition from one political party to the next, other than the highest ministers, which are put in place via a straightforward appointment system. The USA appoints their highest and assistant level officials, nominated by the President, and argued over by Congress, mainly the Senate. The stripping of executive management requires more transition time and the size of the US Federal system clogs the confirmation process, even when the Senate is friendly and the outgoing administration is gracious, neither of which apply here.

@@pranavsinha7399 There is actual evidence of mismanagement; however, such evidences only unveil irregularities not actual fraud. For instance, there was a court case live stream where the prosecutor showed 3 vote counters, recorded on video, counting votes even after the republican watchers left. The video tapes are from security cameras within the room. The thing about this is that the video has no audio, and there is little context to it. Why would they keep counting when everyone was told to stop and go home? Moreover, why would they start counting right after the republican watchers left? That’s a clear irregularity that should be looked at; however, it does not prove a mass voter fraud since this only happened in ONE vote count center.

A peaceful transition of power is an absolute MUST in democratic governments. I think we've all been pretty appalled at how far American democracy has fallen, but it's also given us a chance to rethink and reexamine these political mores and traditions that were once held sacrosanct. I have faith that democracy will always bounce back, but it's concerning (to say the least) to see the hints of authoritarianism and almost extreme polarization of all political bases.

The real question is why have so many political appointees instead of a (normal in every other western country) permanent civil service
@cjrhume
@cjrhume 3 жыл бұрын
I was so confused about this too (I live in the UK). Like why do you guys change your teams every new president? We have a civil service which stays the same no matter the administration, allowing an actually smooth transition. The civil service are well-trained so they just follow instructions according to what the gov want to do
@dharmani_youtube
@dharmani_youtube 3 жыл бұрын
Good point. Though I can see some merit to it. Atleast in India, the permanent bureaucracy make life of honest politicians (when any) difficult too.
@cjrhume
@cjrhume 3 жыл бұрын
@@dharmani_youtube Yeah the Indian system is modelled on the UK's. The same can happen in the UK but I would argue that it is more bureaucratic to change the whole civil service-more public money being wasted training them, giving them emails, clearing out offices etc.

In my country, the the last transfer of power took over three weeks, and it really felt like it was being dragged out. I think it helps that Canada has permanent public service with very few truly only political appointees directly tied to the Minister.

America, cool? No. America is the kid with chickenpox who's parents still sent them to school. When the headteacher calls the parents to ask them to remove their infectious sprog it transpires they are anti vaxxers. They also get drunk before parent's evening and threaten the teacher because surely little Timmy doesn't deserve an F.

That's the problem when such an important thing is a "tradition" and not a law. Trump takes advantages of these gaps because he knows he's not forced to cooperate. Nationalists are more interested about themselves than their country.

It's been January 20th since 1937. The 20th Amendment to the Constitution designated Inauguration Day as January 20. Prior to the ratification of this Amendment, there was no set date in the Constitution. March 4, 1789 was destination as the date of start of government business. Since then until 1937, it's been March 4th. That's nothing new, folks.
