What We Do In The Shadows has been hypnotizing fans since 2019 with its sharp humor, charming characters, and clever use of the mockumentary format. Though when the show was first announced, fans of the original mocumentary film What We Do In The Shadows weren't sure if the format would translate to TV. Turns out, Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement were able to take What We Do In The Shadows to the small screen with ease. Approaching it's final season, lets take a look at the source material that made What We Do In The Shadows the best horror sitcom ever made.

I remember watching the pilot a few years ago, thinking that it was impossible for this TV show to be as good as the movie. Then, Guillermo took Nandor to buy creepy paper. That silliness is exactly what makes this show work as it does. And it's a shame that is going to end, but maybe is for the best.

As a fan of the movie, my main concern was that they were going to Americanize it. The US doesn't have the best track record when it comes to adapting things that were successful in other countries with 3 failed attempts at an American version of Fawlty Towers, 2 failed attempts at Red Dwarf USA and more failed attempts at adapting the likes of Father Ted, The IT Crowd, The Vicar Of Dibley, Kath and Kim, Only Fools And Horses and many more. The Office US was probably the only one that was actually successful (although I personally didn't care for it). So the idea of What We Do In The Shadows getting a big American remake sounded pretty terrible to me...then I saw it and thought it was amazing. I think there are several reasons as to why it worked when most of these adaptions don't. For a start, having the original creators not only involved but pretty much being the lead creative forces behind the show makes it fit much better into the world of the film. Secondly, they aren't trying to replace the characters we knew and loved from the original, they were all completely original. Thirdly, most of the cast are highly regarded character actors who were able to really sink their teeth into the roles (pun slightly intended) rather than casting people who would be known to a mainstream American audience. But the biggest thing would have to be that the show doesn't try to replace the movie, rather adding to it's legacy and continuity.

I'll add a couple more... The American version of taskmaster was extremely disappointing. And the US copy of Ghosts is completely unwatchable.
@Levelistchampion
@Levelistchampion 2 ай бұрын
That's well and good regarding the American track record on adaptations. I'm American, and in a "nobody picks on my little brother but me" sort of way, I wonder if American properties have been successfully adapted abroad. It's pretty rare, I think. Perhaps the latest time I heard of this phenomenon was a French Canadian adaptation of Brooklyn 99. Maybe, and I'm just putting it out there, that American adaptations just stand out more.

I worked on the movie and it was the most fun set i've worked on. Jemaine and Taika are so lovely and kind to work for. I was working art department and they ended up giving me a role in the film and let me improvise. Some bits are in there but most was cut for time (as stated they had a lot of footage) but they really were just having a tonne of fun with mates and it shows. There's a lot of stuff to make you fall out of love with the industry but knowing a set can be that fun, warm and inviting keeps me going no matter the egotistical maniacs I run into.

It's common for Americans to stress the second syllable of foreign words rather than the first, apparently because this is generally seen as a good strategy with Spanish and French, and so gets applied in other cases. Other English dialects aren't so uniform. What's odd here is that the narrator of this video insists on this stress pattern for "Clement," mispronouncing this perfectly common name as if it were foreign, as if perhaps it's French. It suggests they don't realise that New Zealand in an English-speaking country.

So the argument of this video is basically that a concept beloved by a small group continued to be beloved by a larger group, and was able to raise funding for an indie film that was well-received and critically acclaimed, and then turn THAT success into 1 season on a smaller cable network where the show did so well and loved by fans both old and new that it was renewed multiple times for 6 season total, became the most pirated show at the time, spawed a broadcast spin-off, and now has a worldwide audience of literally millions who purchase hard copies both of DVDs and blue-rays... Was a show that SHOULDN'T have worked? What a STUPID idea.

At LITERALLY every stage the show was loved. Exactly HOW should that NOT HAVE WORKED?

FX really knows great comedy when it is pitched to them. They have arguably the two best sitcoms currently on TV (WWDITS and IASIP) I actually refused to watch the TV show until recently because I love the original and truthfully I do not remember the last time a tv show based on a beloved movie was good at all. I got sick and decided it was time and I regret not watching it sooner because the TV show has all of the magic of the movie which was SHOCKING because Jermaine and Taika are only in the show as small cameos.

I still haven't seen the movie, so I can't make a comparison, but I do like the series. At the same time though I have a feeling that there's some problem with the overall plot, because it seems to me that they keep starting sub-plots or dynamics and then just let go of them.

I was very apprehensive about watching the show. I love the movie and as a kiwi, I hate crappy American remakes that overshadow original shows/movies. But I was curious so I ended up watching an episode and it was great, it really captures the energy of the original while not just being a complete copy. I love the show now. It still annoys me when you say the name and people think of the show before the movie though. If you like what we do in the shadows then you should watch Wellington paranormal, set in the same universe.

I actually like the show better than the movie now. Which I did not expect. Crazy.

While I do love the show, I think in the later seasons, it lost its magic a bit. A big part of the film's charm was the idea of showing how boring eternal life would realistically be. That idea was present in the first two seasons, but now, every season is bigger and more plot heavy than the last. Just making it feel more "american"
