Lol this is the most bogus non evidence based claim I’ve seen made about these two. When zidane came back to decide to play in 2006, Henry literally said “The God is back” they did well together. Having a disagreement in “style of play” to “hated playing with each other” That’s a massive reach and stretch

Yeah, Henry was so consistent and efficient that when Zizou retired, then the team was built around him, they were struggling to qualify for the 2006 WC.... Until Zizou came out of retirement, scored a hattrick that got their qualification campaign back on track.

Any day of the week, Zidane had a greater impact on the French team. Henry was good, maybe the best around that time, but Zidane was a whole different breed. They don't make players like Zidane anymore. Zidane was the best player from 1995-2002 and only the Brazilian legends like Ronaldo and Ronaldinho came close. No one was present at that time who had Zidane's qualities.

@@Peterbrendanalbert De Bruyne is different. Zidane main strength were his ability to keep the ball in the midfield. Press-resistant. If I have to choose, it would be Modric. Kovacic or Dembele (Spurs.) is kinda like Zidane also. These guys would tussle & dribble out from the press.

Zidane is the most overrated player in the history of the game. I've seen Zidane since his Bordeaux years and watched him play since 1995 for the national team, i even saw him live when they beat Romania at Bucharest for Euro '96 qualifiers. He is a very good player but nowhere near top 10 midfielders of all time. He isn't in fact even the best french player of all time. Platini individually was better than him, Platini was more efficient & more versatile, he could play the playmaker role or up front, he could pass, score, very good at dead ball situations, stronger mentally etc. The reason Zidane was so indispensible for the French national team is BECAUSE AIMEE JACQUET BUILT IT AROUND HIM starting with 1997 (given the conditions at that time because France lacked quality strikers in 1996, 1997, 1998) and the rest of the managers that followed him Roger Lemmere & Jacques Santini & Raymond Domenech kept the same strategy (Jacquet remained as a Technical Director and didn't allow them to change the strategy). It was especially made for Zidane to be the no. 1 in that team. It brought them success and it also brought them failure (2002 WC & Euro 2004 as well as the performance during the qualifiers for 2006 WC). They weren't flexible when Zidane was missing due to injury or suspension, France played poorly not necessarly because of how great Zidane was but because they didn't knew how to play without him, although they had monster players in their squad. For ex. at the WC in 2002 when Henry was at his top of the game he was used as a winger, France continued to play with a only 1 striker (Trezeguet) and instead of allowing Vieira to have more of an offensive role like he was doing it at Arsenal, they thought aging players like Djorkaeff or Micoud should fullfill Zidane's role and of course they didn't managed that.

I think its just an error he made, your normally flashier when your younger, but as you grow older and age starts to to deteriorate both your speed and power, you use your experience to build efficiency, we see this with messi, pele, iniesta, zidane and henry himself etc, other players adjust to becoming more efficient due to speed lost and injuries, we see that in the 2 ronaldo, maradona, cruyff and so on.

To be fair, I do think it's accurate to say that Zidane was more flashy later in his career. One perfect example was his final world cup performance against Brazil, while it was one of his greatest performances ever, the fact is a lot of it was flashy. Even though I know Henry probably didn't use it as a compliment, flashy isn't always a bad thing as long as it was effective. And against Brazil it was.

Theres nothing big about this. They never hated eachcother but you did answer why they didnt compliment one another on the pitch: zidane was slow and thougjt out the game by creating and using slow build up whilst henry was more of a 'flick me the ball and watch my run and score' type player. Henry is my favourite player of all time but they both played with different teams and had a different understanding of how they should play when it came time for putting on the national shirt

I don't think there was any real tension. They're just two completely different players. Zidane liked to dribble a lot and he played the game in a slower pace. Henry was more of perfectionist, he didn't bullshit around, and he liked to play the game at a faster pace. However, they both have one thing in common, they both build momentum through ball possession. Another thing,...with Arsenal Henry was more of a false 9, he would occasionally drops deep into midfield to get the ball, and run the offence from there(which is why he had a lot of assists), or he would move out wide to the left wing position....but with Zidane on the team there is no need for Henry to carry the entire offence, he can only focus on scoring goals, which is why Henry was never as good with the national team. He was not your typical inside the box striker, he need more touches.

no i disagree. this isn’t why. Henry spoke about it actually and explained that he loved playing with Zidane. they won multiple trophies in 9 years! World cup and euro. the reason why the production wasnt as high it’s because henry liked to drift on the left just like zidane and their combination was more down the field rather around the box. At the time Trezeguet was the point of attack while henry was more like an mbappé roaming from number 9 to left winger at times. and before trezeguet it was Anelka. henry never truly paid as a typical 9 with France

While Henry was elected as « best French player of the year 2005 », Zidane was in the Pelé top 100 player list and named the best European footballer of the past 50 years in the UEFA Golden Jubilee Poll. That should give an idea of how meaningless that tittle is especially during an era where la Liga games were not popular among French people. I doubt Henry was jealous of Zidane. Especially since he was at a totally different level throughout his career. During Zidane short France national team retirement, France struggled to even qualify for the 2006 WC. French coach had to beg for him to return and they went from 4th place of their qualifying group to finally reach 1st thanks to Zidane.

It wasn't an assist meant for Henry. It was a free kick where Henry sneaked into the back post and scored. I genuinely feel Zidane was insecure of Henry at that point. Entire WC 2006, except from that free kick, Zidane didn't even pass the ball to Henry at any point. Zidane can give good through balls...but many times when at Arsenal Henry would've got the pass to out him through. At France, Zidane would do a side pass...heck. he didn't even give a side pass to Henry at WC 2006. Its crazy. I thought no one other than me is noticing.

For instance, Henry upset with Zidane over being the main man when Henry wanted to be the main man is a presumption. I’m sure these words never came from Henry’s mouth although it may have from others. Also, Henry and Zidane being polar opposites on the field? Henry loved to slow the game down, at literally walking pace on the left wing. Whereas Zizu didn’t have pace so he couldn’t turn it up or down if he wanted lol but he was a 1 touch master which is speeding up the game…so I really don’t get the polar opposites comment. I guess you need to watch them both to understand that though

It’s hard to find the direct quotes on the Internet but it was commonly known by French journalists back then. I’ll give you some examples Vincent Duluc of L’Equipe said ‘They look like two talents repelling each other’. And this is a direct quote from Zidane when asked about their partnership ‘Maybe Titi doesn’t need me, he brings the ball up from very far and does extraordinary things’. Then Henry is also quoted ‘The sooner I get the ball, like at Arsenal, where we play without playmaker, the better it is’ He goes on to say ‘I’m not aiming this at anyone particular but it would be better if the striker got the ball before the defender closed in on them’. So while not direct shots, you can see some of the tension. Then when you back that up with some real evidence like when Zidane missed both the Confederation cup in 2001 and 2003, France played quicker football and Pires who replaced Zidane was player of the tournament with Henry. And if you look at WC 02 and Euro 04 where France played very poorly because Henry was now at his peak and a bigger ego so him and Zidane couldn’t gel properly. Whereas 98 & 00’s when France won, Zidane was clearly the main man and Henry was happy to play Zizou’s style.

As a french that saw them play their whole career. Henry always was pretentious with a huge ego and was jealous of Zidane. But at the same time, Henry absolutely NEVER showed up for France as he was the worst big game choker. Even when Zidane left international football the first time (between 2004 and 2005), it’s Pires that became the best player and Leader of France NT. Then when Zidane left for good in 2006, Henry couldn’t show up too, he choked big time in Euro 2008 once again… especially against Greece in KO round. Henry was never able to replicate with France NT what he did with Arsenal… against Middlesborough, Charlton and co 😂

After the failure at Euro 2004, Henry said that he felt uncomfortable playing with Zidane. Henry likes fast games and counterattacks, while Zidane prefers to play tempo, sometimes playing slow, sometimes playing direct.. That's why henry feels he never play as good as arsenal henry. But after Zidane retired, France played very badly and almost didn't qualify for the 2006 wc. Until finally Zidane was asked to return to play for France... After Zidane returned, France performed impressively and qualified for the 2006 WC. Henry finally made a comment about how big Zidane's effect had on the team.

Zidane is my absolute favorite but he was kind of flashy and took a lot of time on the ball which slowed the game. Also lost the ball multiple times and preferred to make complicated passes than simple ones. Laudrup was a better technician in all round game than him.

Their playstyle didn't combine well. Zidane only assisted henry once. Zidane liked to dribble alot instead of passing early when henry made his runs. Also henry had less freedom playing for France than he did at arsenal cos it was built around Zidane. Henrys best tournament was 2003 without Zidane.

This is why scholes couldnt gerrard and lampard struggled in england teams. Gerrard read the game from deep and msde his impact frim there, starting attacks from deep and speeding up the play carrying the ball forward from defensive positions Lampard liked to be involved at the higher end of the pitch and the style of play he was used to was quick powerful play and playing off the left side of the centre be it a 4 3 3 or a 442in an advanced position and to play like a striker in midfield. Speed was adaptable for lampard too he could play the game at several different speeds. Scholes was the one that changed the game the most in my opinion in terms of he wasone of the best players at play in the whole match with his head on a constant swivel and could slow a game down when the team needed it and speed it up when it was required, he was olayingbthe game in his head before he played it with his eyes. From interviews i can gather he used to know what he wanted a striker to do in an ideal situation but was quick enough to notice if a player had read his move correctly or ifbhe needed to play a shorter pass. If youve got this far allow me to apologise in advance for rambling about 3 english midfielders on a video about two of frances and footballs legends of the game. Teams built around Zizou won 98 World Cup and nearly won World Cup in 2006. And team built around Henry nearly couldn’t qualify for 2006 World Cup (Zizou had to break his retirement to make France qualify) and got relegated in 2010 World Cup group stage. It shows why even after getting more awards than Zizou never meant Henry was even close to him. Henry might have been a god of scoring goals but Zizou was the God of team spirit, instigating matches and winning them. ❤
