In this video I'm taking a Jaguar F-Type R out for a bit of a spin up in glorious Scotland. Now available for reasonable money, but potentially unlikely to depreciate much further, the earlier Jaguar F-Type is a car that has taken some time to work its way into my affections. But, now its there - here's why I think you should consider one.

Owning my F type R for a while it took some time to get brave enough to push it. While it is fairly large and heavy it can still go around tight bend at a quite some pace. I suppose its also about the kind of car you want. I dont mind a car you have to work at a bit over time., The review here is pretty balanced, sure the Jag isnt perfect but as Harries Garage shows the Jag can be dual purpose a tourer and a monster when you want it to be.

Jon Patchet - the reason we lust after v8s though is we grew up with them. Going forward the electric or hyrbid super cars are going to be what the younger people lust after. So the same amount of people will lust after the same cars. Unless people start writing them off at a quick rate. So i dont think i agree with them going up on that reason alone.

The V6 is just as reliable as the V8. All the parts are identical, there's just two less of them! For me the sweet F Type is a tuned V6 rwd. 420hp is more than enough and without the AWD hardware it's nearly 200kg lighter than an AWD V8.

I disagree I owned a v6 only because I was too young at the time for insurance on the v8 without paying ridiculous money. I've had a few cars since but soon I'll be back in an F type and this time a v8. There's no comparison in my opinion having owned the v6 and driven the v8

I have a '14 v6s ftype and I can understand the reservation about the v6 vs the v8, however - the v8 for me is unlivable with. Its was terrible in wet weather, the noise was fun at first but quickly became obnoxious, and the centre exhausts look so much better than the quad pipes (subjectively for me it harks back to old etypes) I've done some minor modifications to mine with the steering wheel and am considering tuning. My criticisms were: -I didn't opt for configurable dynamics, and feel this is a must to soften the suspension on British B roads. -the torque on the v6 is very gradual and linear compared to the v8. Not that it's slow, but it doesn't feel as exciting. -the sports seats, 14 way memory and folding mirrors (which adjust to look at the curb when reversing) are one option, which I didn't know at the time - and I think the option for the wing mirrors to point at the curb is a must for how wide this car is. I've probably paid as much for alloy wheel refurbishment. Everything else I've fixed myself. You should try a MK1 v6s at some point.

I have the V8. The problem about how badly it handles on wet roads is a thing. Feels like I have skates on. I fixed it easily by getting rid of the stock pirelli pzeros and got Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Solved all the wet grip problems, handles like a dream, launches harder, and rides better.

This video caught my eye because a year ago, at 21, I bought an F Type in this same colour from the same generation. I went with the V6s and fucking love it. Prefer the sound, it's manageable power where you can put your foot down and not just be immediately on the brakes, absolutely love it. What did you do with the steering wheel? I've got the heated one but would like something a bit more cushioned and soft on the rim, being a few years old it's not quite as supple as it once was! Not sure whether to have it reupholstered of go for another option. Cheers

Love the F type a brute of a supercharged V8. I guess you don't have to always open the valves for the full fat crackle and pop. Jaguar brought a lower powered V8 to replace the V6. This in RWD was apparently the best balanced less weight and not as much torque allowed it to better controllable on the limit. It might be worth finding one these to try out!! Buy one and you can go all Clarkson every time you mention it😆

“I like different…..a lot”. So you are warming to the F Type R and this is a very fair review. However the exhaust noise is only there if you want it to be. It can be muted at the push of a button. Not many people realise that you can run it in ‘active dynamic’ with all the engine and suspension enhancements but silence the exhaust by simply pressing the exhaust valve button again. I love that option. It’s like the silent (ish) assassin mode. The RWD cars give you beautifully weighted hydraulic steering that is uncorrupted by drive train. In my view considerably more enjoyable than the AWD. However you have to drive with great awareness and control, as there is a great deal of power for the rear end to deal with. Clumsy throttle control will deliver some scary moments. Building up your understanding of its abilities can also be thought of as part of the enjoyment (and a driving skill). It’s an investment of time that is not needed with the RWD. For me the car feels special whilst somehow avoiding people mouthing “w&#£er “ as you drive past (something that seems to affects Ferrari, Porsche & Lamborghini). The F types real party trick is its true GT abilities when you need some quiet, relaxing, mile munching. Every petrol head should try to experience any model of F type whilst it’s still possible.

The 2wd 2014/15 Type R was it's best looking version that IaIn Callum designed - which they ruined in 2016 (to his chagrin) with more scoops and holes than Walls Ice Cream and Blackburn Lancashire, and the new electric steering system they fitted was less feelsome. 4 w.d. steering not so good I found. A lairy and fiery beast that is lethal in the wet and could also do 40mpg on a motorway, plastics are a bit crappy, as is the sat nav - but I love it's general solidness (heavyness some might say) too....a bit like a German 575 would be - I love my orange one although you do have to tiptoe around on the limit as it feels like it will rotate! Leased by some "rich" kid who tries too hard to show off a lifestyle to their friends they can't afford in the long term. Not to mention they have serious quality issues, and I'm comparing it to a Jag mind you.
@aaa84gt
@aaa84gt 2 жыл бұрын
Funny how that works. I live in Norway and I can see literally 5 Teslas in the same traffic lights junction anywhere there's rush, there are hundreds of them EVERYWHERE. But I get visitors from other countries and they lose their minds because Teslas are rare where they're from. I felt the same about big Lexuses, I thought they were cool and exclusive, then I visited UAE and they were literally everywhere there and you'll impress no one with a Lexus over there. I think I heard the same thing about Nissan Skyline GT-R R32/3/4 in Australia, those guys have so many of them it's nothing special while the rest of the world loses their minds over them.

@@aaa84gt Good point. However, I'd say the C63 is a very common performance car among the entire world (or at least in Europe, Russia and North America). I can't say the same thing about the F-Type, it's almost a rarity unless you live in Blackpool or something

Hi James Another great review I thoroughly enjoy your channel but I must take the time to go back to your videos and add a few thumbs up. I’ve usually got your reviews playing on auto play whenever I tune in for a wee catch up on what you’ve been up to, as I think about my workbench. I was hoping you’ll be able to tell me what route you are on in that test drive. Thanks to my photographic memory I recognise so much of the road and the route and it is frustrating the hell out of me not be able to remember it so that would be great if you get A chance to let me know the The road number or even the rough route area what ever. One thing is for sure, it was a cracking road to put a panther through its paces. Anyway James, keep up the excellent , work I thoroughly enjoying your reviews. On a personal note. I particularly enjoyed your refreshing and most accurate review i’ve heard anybody present , on the Jaguar X type 2.0D. My son and I, picked one up for his mum two years ago. An immaculate red/cream SE 2.0 diesel, manual 2008 facelift model. 72,000 miles on the clock We paid £1500 for it, and we drove it straight out of the scrapyard, (it was in the insurance retention section under the category dealership disposal). The next day my son could’ve sold it for £2700 and I believe it is worth about £3500+. ? so as you say these are indeed interesting times in the secondhand car market. With a full dealership service history and only two fault codes showing on the backdoor log accessible through pressing the phone and menu buttons together, until a key pad appears, type 1971, and everything the dealerships access is here... || IF, LIKE ME, YOU HAVE AN ENQUIRING MIND, AND YOU’RE TEMPTED TO MIRIAD OF SETTINGS AND OBC REPORT OPTIONS. OR, TO CHANGE THE CAR INTO A DAIMLER, OR TRY OUT ANY OTHER LOGO OPTIONS, BY MEANS OF HAVING A WEE LOOK SEE, AT WHAT LOGO OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE IN SETTINGS...!!! NB: 1). DO NOT PRESS THE SYSTEM UPDATE BUTTON, THIS UNLEASHES A COMPLETE, AND TO MY KNOWLEDGE IRREVERSIBLE DELETE ON THE TOUCHSCREEN SYSTEM FUNCTIONS !!! 2). ITS NOT IRREVERSIBLE, BUT IT IS AN, “OH NO... NO NO NO NO....!?!?!?” TYPE EXPERIENCE, THAT TRIGGERS THE FLUSHED CHEAKS THING... BUT IF YOU CAN READ YOU CAN JAPANESE, THEN KNOCK YOURSELF OUT AND SHARE THE SECRETS...!! SO.... PAY ATTENTION TO THE EXACT POSITIONS ON SCREEN OF ALL BUTTONS YOUR PRESSING... (I.e. ensure you can retrace your footsteps) On other stuff.... I like to judge things in terms of bang for buck, and we are fair chuffed Because the kids are all grown up and moved on Bing about in the wrong course my wife Phil but she’d prefer a smaller car and happily I have ended up with a joke Ordinarily and throughout my life I’ve tried to avoid the prestige/ ego brands, But through work go for allsorts AMG Mercedes BMWs land Rover discoveries range rovers allsorts of stuff and I have to say I like the jug more than any of them not because of its performance but because of its waft.... I am 52 , I’m retired , I support my kids and their business enterprises whatever and I’m looking forward to being a grandad and the scar is just the ticket and I’d love to know or hear about anybody else that gets better bang for buck than that , so all is good.... I truly did enjoy the fact that you set the record straight on so many myths from the “But its just a Mondeo” put the crew, every time I meet anybody who is in the water truth that’s the first thing I hear and have a bugger about with cars since I was aged eight and haven’t had videos I said to them you are saying but you’re talking bollocks,, apologies for the language but it is what it is he so again thank you for your honesty you obviously perceive things as they are not as they’re told. You’re bang on the boot fuel economy be getting the same. And sadly and most upsetting Lee you will bang on about that bloody centre armrest feels like A revamped draft excluder from the letterbox or a catflap it’s horrendous but anyway we’ll get it out to that. One thing I’d like to point out, and this is a rare thing indeed these days, if you turn off the drivers Break stability button thing, you can left footbrake, and maybe it’s just the size of my feet but I can toe and heal as well, much to the dismay of many a performance car, most notably an insipid green thing with a bull on the bonnet (video evidence can be provided) but he was on section of road that I drove as part of the Jim Clark rally one year, but still, considering he was throwing stones up into my windscreen, it was inexcusable (we could maybeez make some money out the raging bull In a gagging order kind of way to protect the brand James, what do you think..?) It’s a least got to be worth nuisance/comedic value? Cheers Mike… PS apologies in advance for any poor spelling or incoherence in my message couple of things I have a disability of the hunts called Duper Troncon tractor further complicated by severe dyslexia so the physical thing affects my hands so I can’t type so I’m at the mercy of Siri And dyslexia and small comment boxes just don’t work I find it very difficult to review what I’ve said and when I used to work I would read my emails about six times before I sent them whereas with these damn nuisance comment boxes I just get completely lost so sorry about that. I was just thinking that some of the XType comments might be useful if added to your other xtype review video but that’s my hands in agony and it’s taking me about two hours to do this message alone. So James ☮️💟☯️ PPS. my son Mathew would be very interested if you ever did a report on the Volkswagen Bora highline mark four hidden gems ... and a huge loophole in insurance for young drivers.....

Had one in May last year with an extended warranty in America. Jaguar Gwinette unbolted the whole front end to redo the supercharger prior to my ownership. When I had the car, AC decided to blow hot and humid air after a week of my ownership. Both Gwinnett GA and Greenville SC failed to solve the issue. Greenville tried to charge me money for getting the repair done while the warranty is in place. They are good cars ONLY if you have a good dealer. Don't buy them unless you have a source that can solve issues for you.

I feel sorry for the young man on insurance costs, I have the F-type R V8 2019 in British racing green, I love it but my insurance for 8 months is only 900.00$ Canadian here in western Canada. I had a 2009 Aston Martin DB9 previously, I like my jag a lot more, it’s very reliable compared to the Aston Martin. For the exhaust noise I just leave dynamic mode off around the city and it remains significantly quieter. This car is quick and I have had a few very high speed runs on a major interior highway and still lots left in 8th gear

A comment on the sound. this is very subjective. Personally, I'm not so much a fan of the "pops". The growl when the valves are open is what I love. And every car has a different note. Ferrari is a high pitched screech. My F Type seems to be something of a mixed bag. It's a RWD, but has the upgraded infotainment system (like the one in the video, but mine is faster to react), but the sound's really muted (like those that came after) it. The valves are working though and on cold start its as loud as anything. I'm pretty sure it's 402 KW, 680 Nm. The F Type will always trump the 911 in terms of presence and that "wow" factor.

For one thing, the Jag is much higher quality, all aluminum vs cheap rusty steel, and has a Rolls Royce transmission for $700,000 less. And is absurdly faster with the standard issue conservative 700HP tune. And its supercharged vs $15 (OEM cost) tacked+on turbos so its not a race unless the turbo engine is allowed to preload 2 seconds early.
