This video is meant to show you a simple drumming concept (a Moeller 3 stroke) and all of its applications when mastered and applied on a deeper level. If you need a hand technique course where I break out this technique and a TON more, check out this 14 day free trial to my online drum school. I have Hand Technique 101 and Hand Technique 102 available for immediate access in the online campus: bit.ly/2TpkJmJ

I practiced this last night and while I could not combine the threes seamlessly into single stroke rolls I can feel where it leads. Swiss trips and other Flam Taps are accessible, but I will slow it down to see if I can get the syncopation for singles.
@3dsanek
@3dsanek Жыл бұрын
@@jmfs3497 Jim Chapin suggests simple method that helped me to solve that: while keeping this three-stroke motion in one hand interleave it with another hand playing just simple ghost tap strokes first, then switch the hands, and after you master that you'll be able to put both hands in interleaved three-stroke motion easily. It works!

On the contrary, he is helping a lot of drums teachers on the way. I have the same "go deep in the basics" mindset but way he explains this... Now I don't feel old fashioned about concentrating on such fundamentals/rudiments every month with my students. And because of Stephen and other online drum educators I know what I can give to my students. They are one of the biggest inspiration source for my lesson flow.

Not a glamorous gift, the practice pad. But then again, is going to the gym glamorous? No. He's not putting teachers out of business. He's just trying to motivate some millennials? Seems like we have to explain how simple and easy something is in order to get you to work on stuff. Then we can engage in some poly-rhythmic playing. (Hopefully) Try some hemiola patterns or something? Or don't we talk about hemiolas anymore?

I have played drums for 45 yrs and hadn't heard of this until about a decade ago. After hearing about it on the internet, I set out to learn it. For years it just wouldn't click, my hands just didn't get it but I didn't give up. Then about 4 yrs ago I finally got past the block and it clicked. The motion fell into place and for the first time, I felt that nearly effortless stream of strokes and it felt GREAT! For the next several months I practiced my newly learned skill and more and more it became natural and more even. This skill changed my drumming measurably and helped me get enjoy some of the hand speed that I had felt impossible for me to achieve, and it was nearly effortless! If you haven't learned this yet, take the time to start playing the strokes slowly and GRADUALLY build up speed. I concentrated on my hands feeling comfortable playing steady even strokes for months before I increased my speed. I found that to be a wise option as it made my playing much cleaner and more precise. This is definitely a game-changer for your drumming if you haven't already learned it. :-)

I'm glad you brought this one up, I learned this when I was 14 in middle school band, I was having a conversation with the new band director at the time, he was a drummer/percussionist, I played trumpet, so I asked him a few drum questions on a break one day, he took out his practice pad and this happened to be the same exercise you just displayed! I had forgotten about that moment until I watched this!! Thanks for bringing back a great memory from so long ago!!!

This is really timely for me! I've been working on my brush technique, specifically accents on the brushes. For exercises, I took the triplet accent exercises from Syncopation and focused on brush accents, trying to get them to flow and sound natural without jamming the brushes together. It seems like there's a lot of cross-over between the two forms. The approach that I'm taking is more methodical, but yours is definitely a lot better for loosening up and quick warm-ups before playing a set. Thanks for posting!

This is a very profound concept/lesson, and I like how you presented it. I think you have arrived at a series, where you are on the practice pad walking about, on the drum set for part of it, then back to where you started. The message of "Simple, yet deep" can be the same for each of the simple techniques, yet driven home over and over with each video. I like the voice-over. Overall I can say that this spoke to me probably like many others that watch your channels. Maybe make a companion "Applied" version of the video which is just on the kit and goes in detail about the patterns around the drums yet references the "Simple, Yet Deep" video as they work together. Not that you need me for any video ideas as you already have them, but I think you could turn this into a series, presented in a similar way.
