I am genuinely interested to buy this lens for my ESO M50 with the speedbooster, i just want to know if it will be sharp when taking portraits weddings (when i upgrade my camera body of course) and doing car photography. Will highly appreciate it if you can advise me. Loved your video! and thank you

I mean, it’s Canon L-series glass. I think it’s very sharp - you can check my Instagram (@matthewtobrien) and see all the photos I’ve taken with it (I note the lens I use in each of my photos). The only thing to watch out for - because you can only get them used - is that the one you get is in great condition. Check for dents/dings before buying. If you get it and take a few pics and feel like it’s not sharp enough you can always request a refund.

Yup, solid lens. One thing I’ve found since getting it is the focus motors can be picked up by nearby mics so watch out for that if you do any shooting or livestreaming in quiet environments. Thanks for watching my vid!

Just learned that there is a BUDGET FRIENDLY Canon L-series wide angle at f/2.8. Found one in Finland, bought it instantly. After buying I stumbled across this video while doing research and this confirmed me that I made the right choice buying it! Thank you! Now I’m off to sell my 17-40mm f/4, but before I go I want to let you know that you got a new subscriber! Thanks!

This is great, Timo! The only thing I'd add to my review of this lens is that the focus motors are quite loud when in auto-focus mode. Most of the time with video this isn't an issue, but when I'm doing my livestreams for my channel I have to keep the lens in manual mode because the focus motors are really loud for my audience. And the lack of Image Stabilization can be tough at times when paired with the EOS R. You can really see it when trying to film anything handheld. Still, I'm glad I have it and for less than $450? Much better for me right now than the very, very expensive RF 15-35mm f/2.8 with IS.
@timovehkaoja
@timovehkaoja Жыл бұрын
@@matthewTobrien I will mostly use it for the talking head scenes in which I now use the 17-40mm f/4, so the lack of IS isn’t a problem. And i have an overhead mic, so the autofocus loudness wont be a problem either. Got mine for $300, so it was a real BARGAIN. 🤙🏻

Haven’t purchased a used lens yet. But also haven’t removed the sigma 18-35 yet. I keep thinking I’m gonna change the lens. I’ve tried a fisheye and cropped in. Arms looked freaky long. Got the sigma 10-20. But, like you said, wasn’t getting enough separation. So yeah, the blackmagic fans love to troll and meme the sigma art 18-35, but you just can’t beat the f1.8. Great look. It makes you feel at home.
@matthewTobrien

Yeah, the Sigma 18-35 is terrific and crazy fast at f/2.8. Two friends here in Omaha have it and love it. Only complaint may be that the housing is a little less durable, but other than that it's rock solid. We're actually using it on a little documentary project we're working on right now, and the footage looks goooooood. Thanks for watching, Brian!

I love the C100 MkII! My main cam used to be the C100 MkII with my b-cam as the C100 MkI (with the auto-focus add-on). Although I put the money from the sale of the C100s toward the purchase of my C300 MkII, I really miss the C100 MkII and wish I still had it so I could use it in an eventual live-streaming setup. Even though it was only 1080p 8-bit 4-2-0, there was something kinda magical about the image it made.... The 17-40 has served me well for the last 4 years, but it was time for an inexpensive upgrade. It works well for me when shooting. Biggest issue with it is the loudness if the focus motors. Second biggest issue with the lens is the fact that it doesn’t have image stabilization built in. I can’t remember if the M50 has IBIS but if you’re shooting with a tripod no need to worry.

Hmmm... honestly I prefer the more subtle blur on the f/4. It looks unnatural to my eyes to have so much subject separation in a home studio for a vlog. The whole point of a vlog IMO is to give a sense of place.
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for saying so, Range. I don't disagree at all with the need for a sense of place. Perhaps that's a good idea when actually up on my feet doing more traditional vlogging. I think, though, when I do my sit-down stuff with all the lighting and the teleprompter .... there's just something about that soft background that feels better to me. Maybe it's just to hide the fact that I don't have my studio interior designed the way I want it to be - especially the back room with the storage shelves, etc. Thanks for watching!

Sorry to be a spoiler, but the background looked more distracting with the 17-35 2.8. 😅 Given all other setting were same, I'm assuming, the lights in the background became brighter an caused that. BTW, thanks for informing us about that lens. I found that on ebay in the same way you did.

Let me know what you think of it! One thing I didn't realize while making the videos is how audible the focus motors can be - I use this lens for my livestreams but had to stop using it in AF mode because my shotgun mic mounted just below the camera was picking up the focus motors and distracting my audience. When I'm vlogging it's not an issue, and when I'm making in-studio vids where the mic is boomed up and away from the camera it's not an issue.

@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien Жыл бұрын
I mean, I personally like the versatility of a zoom lens but the f/4 sometimes makes it a struggle. If I had my way I’d have the 17-40 f/4 with a 24mm prime. It really depends on what you’re doing - if your videos are mostly you taking to camera with camera on a tripod and you don’t vlog a lot needing to change focal length for a-roll and b-roll, go with the 35mm. If you’re vlogging a ton and need the versatility of a zoom, go that route.
