To simplify, the cycle of each cylinder in an engine is actually two rotations around the crankshaft (suck>squeeze>bang>blow, each for 180 degrees). And, the motion of cylinders in all engines are designed to always be in balance with each other, meaning equal and opposite reactions are paired up. In an inline-4 engine, two cylinders go up while two go down, but the cylinders within each pair are 360 degrees away from each other in their individual cycles (e.g., suck & bang for one pair, squeeze & blow for the other). Another way they’re kept in balance is the outer two cylinders rotate together, and the inner two cylinders rotate together - it’s balanced rotationally and longitudinally. But still, with this engine, there’s still only one cylinder firing every 180 degrees of crankshaft rotation. (Imagine pedaling a bicycle but only pressing each pedal briefly for an instant and only when they’re at the very top of their rotation. Not ideally smooth) A flat-plane crank V8 has another inline-4 attached to the same crankshaft, but the second inline-4 is 90 degrees offset in the cycle relative to the first. That means that a cylinder is now firing every 90 degrees of crankshaft rotation. More bangs of smoothness and power for any given RPM. (Twice as frequent presses on those bicycle pedals to get the pedals around smoothly.) But still, that’s only one bang every quarter turn. A V12 is two inline-6 engines joined at the crank, and it fires a cylinder every 60 degrees of rotation. On each bank, the 1st and 6th cylinders rotate together, then 120 degrees later the 2nd and 5th, then 120 later the 3rd and 4th. On the other bank, it’s the same, offset by 60 degrees. This particular setup is perfectly balanced and feels smooth too. There are secondary forces I haven’t gone into, and a V12 has those balanced as well. 12 times every 720 degrees of crank rotation, a cylinder fires, having to carry the weight of the rest of the rotating assembly only 60 degrees ‘til the next one fires up.

I bout a 2016 Mercedez Benz S550 class off the show room floor. It cost me 120k abouts. It was such a smooth ride and I bet it was as smooth as the RR. No doubt the Mercedes cars have pretty much the same quality as you get in Bentleys, RR and Lambos. Though they are not hand built with the finest leather and are not hand painted, they are very nice and a lot cheaper. Their turbo powered engines in the AMG grades are hand built and they are just more accounts of how good the Germans can build things such as cars. Still at 120k they are not cheap cars. One like I had then is probably 30k more than when I bought mine. I had also previously bought their GLS550 and it was awesome. Now I’m in an Escalade for my wife and there is no comparison but it is a SUV. Heck it isn’t cheap 90k plus for a vehicle. I do like GM American cars though. But I still may get me at least one more Mercedes before I leave this world. They are just fun to drive. I’ll never have a RR just because it’s not practical for me. lol, people forget, RR is not a race car, people often mistake the massive engine displacement for sheer racing power but far from it, designed to reduce vibrations felt when driving. They are the pinnacle of what luxury is, accelerating without even feeling it and let alone, accelerating a car that weights about 4-5k… those engines are immaculate!

I see some people don't like the fact that this engine is so quiet. But it's supposed to be like that, it's not a gurgling, loud V8 or Honda Civik with a rusty exhaust that annoys everyone around. Overall, the V12s have a very balanced sound. And this is what it is.

The 'why' is that every L6 engine is naturally primary and secondary balanced. So 2 x L6 in V configuration (V12) is naturally balanced too. It's not a Rolls Royce thing, it's a (60˚) V12 thing.
@SocietyUnplugged2 жыл бұрын
@Sang Mang nope… 6L is in balance so V12 or w18 is perfectly balanced too.
@Zaggy2212 жыл бұрын
@@SocietyUnplugged I think you mean L6. And yes a straight 6 is balanced and only L4's have a secondary imbalance. But the point is the frequency of the vibrations. And obviously the more cylinders, the higher frequency, so less noticeable vibrations. And a V12 is smoother than a V8.

@Alfred Wedmore I am not disagreeing but just pointing out that what you are saying applies to any V12. There are a lot of V12 in existence, I dunno if they are any smoother than the Rolls-Royce seen in this video, but I am sure they are almost as smooth. You didn't mention the well-designed counterbalance has on an engine, which has a significant impact on engine smoothness. Especially those without the advantage of naturally balanced primary and secondary vibrations, but counterbalances are needed on Inline6 and V12's as well.
@chippyjohn12 жыл бұрын
@Alfred Wedmore They completely balance in I6 and V12, not largely. And no, they do not balance in a V8.
