@@waltysalamander upvoted. love, love, love the la sals and their proximity to Moab and everything else in the area, AND the lack of people that actually explore them. BUT, Utah has MANY crown jewels. The Wasatch for proximity to SLC and ability to find solitude just minutes from the most popular roads and trails here (I live on the Wasatch front along with most of Ut's population). Ski resort traffic notwithstanding, the Wasatch's still are not overcrowded outside of the ski areas and the most popular trails. Same for Uintas, but just a little further away and NO motorized vehicles. But Utah crown jewels also include many mentioned in the video: the Tushars, Deep Creeks, Henries, Abajos, Bear Rivers, and don't forget the plateaus: Markagunt, Fish Lake, Wasatch, and Boulder Mountain. And can we count the Snake Creeks & Rubies too? (in Nevada, but as close if not closer to the Wasatch front than to LV/Reno) Not to mention UT's world famous (but unfortunately overcrowded) national parks. I'd put in a vote for Lake Powell / GSENM as Utah's crown jewel too. That area is definitely a treasure - for anyone who's never explored it, you're missing out. Crowns can have many jewels, and UT certainly does; the La Sals being a prominent jewel but far from the only one.

You need to do a video like this about why it’s so hard to develop more ski resorts in Washington State. The Overcrowding is becoming a problem with pretty much no solution other than hiking up prices and reservation systems. This topic should be explore in many other places. Good work!

Highly recommend. Alta/snowbird is absolutely top tier. Make sure you prepare your legs for a month+ before going tho so you can truly enjoy it. They get some mega deep powder days and it would be a shame for your legs to get cooked after only a few runs. Lastly, if you end up going to Alta take an Alta bomb for me down in the lodge and most importantly have the time of your life!

This is a great and interesting video, but I do think Brian Head and Beaver Mountain, at least, are worthy of consideration for ski trips, even if they don't fit the classic definition of a "destination resort". As for Brian Head, you could easily ski a day or two there, and go golfing in St. George or visit some of Utah's National Parks in the winter, when the crowds are less and the scenery is different due to snow. The red rocks of Brian Head make for a really beautiful aesthetic experience! In northern Utah, Beaver Mountain, where I have a season pass, is a really fun resort. The downside is it doesn't have any truly steep terrain and the lifts are slow. But on the plus side, you are likely to find lots of stashes of powder for days after storms. The vibe is great. Lines are minimal, except for Saturdays and holidays. Last season I met a few people with Indy passes who were visiting from out East, and they seemed to love it and thought it was a very affordable destination given their two free days and the relatively low costs of hotels in Logan. So, in sum, it's possible that these resorts could provide for good value for a ski trip, depending on what exactly you are looking to get (an emphasis on steep or extreme terrain, in which case the Wasatch areas are indeed better, or overall value for intermediate or moderately advanced skiers...etc). One final thought, I think Utah could easily have many other ski resorts if the population base ever expands, or other smaller cities continue to gain in population (whether in Cache Valley, Utah County, Cedar City, St. George...etc). Hopefully more resorts will come online as that happens.

FYI Lake effect only accounts for around 5% of snow annually in the Wasatch and salt has nothing to do with how light the snow is. It is because of the orientation of the mountain range.
@omarmuhyar2005
@omarmuhyar2005 4 ай бұрын
You've repeated a lie that the Great Salt Lake makes the snow lighter. It does not. Our location in the Great Basin, yet closer than Colorado to the coast, makes it about 8% water content snow, on average. It's basically dense enough to provide good coverage but light enough to be fantastic to ski/snowboard on for floatation. Additionally, the lake doesn't enhance that much of our snowfall. Maybe 10%, on average. One other thing: The Wasatch's steep gradient and topography creates optimal orographic lift and its proximity to Pacific storms and NorthWest flows are really what juices our storms compared to other ranges that don't capture as much moisture. Very similar layout to Steamboat and Buffalo pass in Colorado.

Yup. Park City Mountain/The Canyons. The next closest would be the resorts up the two "cottonwood" canyons (Snowbird, Brighton & Solitude) . Those require you to drive into the Salt Lake Valley to access. If you don't have an Epic pass for Park City, buy an Epic "Day" pass $110 before they stop selling them in Dec.
