I have a yellow watchmen goby and tigger pistol shrimp paired up in my 90 gallon reef tank. This is a natural friendship. They are fun to watch. The goby watches the entrance of the barrow while the shrimp digs and offers up food to the goby for protection. The noise is pretty loud. You can hear a snap around the tank.

It is even more impressive. Cavitation is so destructive, it can punch holes into hardened steel. When the bubbles collapse, you can see a tiny flash which can reach up to 18.000 degrees Fahrenheit - sure, just for the fraction of a second, yet still quite hardcore for a shrimp. The phenomenon is also called Shrimpoluminescence because it is so common amongst Pistol Shrimps and Mantis Shrimps.

That's so interesting to see how size can be very misleading in nature! Our crew recently filmed a project proving how tiny krill play such a crucial role in the Antarctica ecosystem!

I've got many happy childhood memories of hanging out on a snapping, crackling, popping reef and playing with various little critters. It was fun to have a pistol shrimp in my hand, lying in a bit of water, and when it would snap its claw it kind of tickled. The mantis shrimp, back home, is called "squilla" by its genus, and is considered good eating.

I’ve kept pistol shrimp and goby pairs in my reef tanks in the past and they are a blast to watch, but the snapping at night does get annoying. They also LOVE to bury corals.

Being an ex submariner in the Royal Navy I worked as a sonar operator, these were the bain of the submariners life. They were so noisy that they would blank SONAR if you went through a shawl. Their snapping claws were so powerful that they change sound into light which is known as sonoluminescenc. They are actually collectively as loud as if everyone on earth fried bacon at the same time. Amazing little creatures but a bugger if you're trying to track down a sub.

Nice intro..it is just funny you didn't wrap it up by pointing out he was speaking from the standpoint of an agriculturalist. In agriculture, the "Fruit" of the crop is referring to the part being harvested for economic use. It has nothing to do with the scientific/culinary distinctions. It is similar to how chefs recognize the edible part of a plant (like with artichokes and coconuts), as the "meat" despite not being animal based protien/muscular tissue. Since Bubba is planning a fishing buisness; what he is actually telling Forest is that the shrimp are the harvestable money crop he intends to pull from the sea. He recognizes the value in harvesting the animal from a buisness perspective over anything else the sea produces, so he calls it the fruit. Considering Forest is from a deep-south, plantation rich home environment and not very good with terms he is unfamiliar with; Bubba's use of this simple but industry specific term makes even more sense. He is helping Forest understand his reasoning for wanting to start a shrimp buisness after the war, so recognizing it as the harvestable crop part of the sea in the most simple terminology he believes Forest would understand as a simple farm boy; is the best strategy. It's sort of a lamen's term for someone in the know. You arn't going to call it billiards or snooker to most people, you call it pool. Granted, people unfamiliar with the game entirely will be confused and wonder why you are using a long stick to go swimming; but to anyone in the know, it is the most common and easily recognizable term to describe the game.
