I have watched Japanese news panel discussions on the automotive transition. It seems to be common knowledge there that hybrid engineering is extremely challenging and that other companies simply cannot replicate Toyota's performance. This is despite the patents being in public domain. And the relatively poor quality of German vs Toyota hybrids is a big reason that Europe chose to eliminate hybrids from the EV revolution. Just reporting what I watched.

@@heistbrian5486 It very easy to understand that it's a lot better to just have an eletric motor than having an eletric motor and a gas motor. The cost of production, the cost of maintenance, the added weight of a hybrid has no chance competing with an EV car. This isn't even a discussion.

This assessment may be wrong. Toyota recognizes that long charge times, an inadequate electrical grid, and changing battery technology makes early entry into this market segment risky. They are playing their cards close to their chest to see where trends go. Don’t fool yourself that they are not experimenting and can jump onto any bandwagon within months. I know Toyota has research into solid state battery technology. I got news for people; nuclear power plants are the only energy dense solution to replace coal and advance our power grid for electrical vehicles. Solar and wind is a joke. We also need government to mandate standards for EV plugging stations and subsidize (rather than subsidize oil) a new infrastructure of charging stations. Consumers will not enter a market where they think their $50k purchase is obsolete or non standard. Lastly, gas prices rising will need to occur so that behaviors change; people will need to rethink mass transit, long distance travel and recreational driving.

solar is actually more practical than you think when used in giant deserts. look up the huge solar farm in Morocco.
@DesertPackrat
@DesertPackrat 2 жыл бұрын
@@alexm566 I live in a desert and solar is not cost efficient for us because of the expense of the equipment, the inefficiency of the panels which also decrease over time, and the capacitance challenge for electrical on-demand. Combine that with loss of government tax incentives and power companies that flip the rules of energy buy back or on grid requirements and it makes it chaotic for homeowners to choose. 20 home cooperatives that share the expense of battery storage and are off grid may be viable. I still think solar has too many challenges. Alternately I am beginning to study more about thermal electric. I always thought this was limited because it demanded fault lines and underground water sources, but I now believe that as other energy costs rise it many allow for expanded thermoelectric plants to be built in unconventional areas. I don’t think it is a full replacement, but it could augment nuclear in areas where populations and land are sensitive to nearby nuclear plants.

@@DesertPackrat Small solar panels aren't very efficient at all, but what I am referring to are giant ones like the big sahara solar farm in Morocco that doesn't even use solar panels but rather relies on mirrors and molten salt. those are too big to be installed on individual homes but they're very efficient and can power entire countries even when the sun is out at night because molten salt acts like a giant battery. do yourself a favor and look it up.

I got news for you. Tesla is sold out this year. Guess why that is if people love plugin hybrids so much. Actually the only reason to produce plugin hybrids is that you can sell maintenance free technology and still make a profit from service and maintenance that wouldn't be needed if there was on ice engine. The only reason for a customer to buy a plugin hybrid is he must be dead fucking stupid and have too much money he doesn't know what to do with and so he decides to donate it to the dealer and manufacturer in form of parts and service.

They use China manufactures to build EV. FOR TESLA YOUR DATA MAYBE OLD. THEY ARE PROJECTED TO CIRCA 2m cars this year. And are growing production at 80% year. Will they hit 20m 2030? Be tough but pretty confident they’ll hit toyotas production of circa 10m by about 2028. Toyota cannot (no one can) flex that quickly to produce EVs. They are on course to lose massive market share to Tesla and the Chinese. Eu bans hybrids 2035, Uk by 2030. No one in China will drive anything bu EVs by end of decade. That’s the trajectory.

Toyota has common sense. We should learn from them. Anyone can go back and forth a billion times and argue over the goal. It's not going to happen overnight, probably not in our lifetime, but it will. Forcing the goal will have negative effects on the cause. I'm all for renewable energy, but from where I sit, it's only going to be devastating to the planet to rush into so quickly. If it happens three years from now, the grid wouldn't be able to handle it. Furthermore, all the power to support it would most likely come from fossil fuels. Sit back and think about it. It's a catch 22. Making batteries has negative effects on the environment as well, disposal, recycling etc. We can see anywhere on the web, look what's happening just to plastic, nobody wants to recycle it anymore. Now take all the hazardous materials involved with battery recycling. Countries start just dumping that into rivers and canals? What's the impact of that?

For many, a plug-in hybrid is actually a greener solution, because it offers sufficient EV range for day-to-day usage without having to lug around an unnecessarily huge battery that's under-utilized 90% of the time but required lots of rare earth to produce. The most concerning part is that, with EV, people will have less freedom, not in the sense of charging, but I am talking about electricity grid being a highly centralized infrastructure. The authority could pretty much halt the whole nation simply by limiting the supply of electricity and everyone will be stuck. That's what a big government would love to see.

What these EV groupies don’t realize is that legacy car companies have no need to make electric cars. They make money servicing gasoline engines, and there are more parts to replace on gasoline engines and hybrid cars. Also, it is far more complicated to make a gasoline or hybrid car with the engine, transmission, exhaust, radiator, engine computer, driveshaft, differential and gas tank, than to make an electric car with a battery and a motor. So switching over is no big deal. And Toyota has global distribution and service centers already in place. Most of Toyota’s customers are not going to buy a $70-$140,000 Tesla anyway. Toyota is not behind, they are not in that market, which is still a very expensive market. And Toyota is working on Hydrogen Cars. Is Musk paying for this video?

Imo, industry ecosystem as mentioned in 4:30 is one of the biggest reason. Toyota parts come from suppliers within it's group. Then, imagine the damage of shrinking 2000 parts to 20 parts. With a very interweaving business model of Keiretsu, shifting to full EV is like shooting own feet ... with a shotgun. But staying with ICE is also not an option in the long term.

Toyota loves hybrids, because it's a better fit for most of the markets they are in, outside North America and Europe. They also know that until EVs are TRULY affordable by the masses and charging times are a consistent 10 minutes or less, there is a huge market that will continue to rely on ICE vehicles. This buys time for Toyota, and all the other Japanese manufacturers, to develop EVs that most consumers will embrace. In a time when North American and European manufacturers are focusing on the production of high end ICE vehicles, because the margins are better, Japan, Korea and China are in a good position to fill the gap. They are experts at building cheap, reliable and economical ICE vehicles. That future grid you talk about is not going to happen over night. Brushing off Toyota's concerns over availability of electricity, not only in Japan, but many many other countries, is a mistake. All-too-often, people tend to think local, not global.

Toyota president thinks like an engineer. Too bad, consumers think like a fool. They will use the "green" excuse to buy a new EV, without realizing that an EV (especially large EV like SUV and trucks) is much worse to the environment, especially in those places where electricity is generated by coals.

@@daydreamer8373 You sound like a broken record repeating the same thing over and over. The future is electric? Really? I'm 62 years old and the first train I traveled on at age 2 or 3 in the 1960s was electric. So how is the future electric? Electricity is nothing new or futuristic. And electric cars were invented in the 19th century and early in the 19th century at that. Some sort of lithium battery has been with us for decades now. Packaging has improved and we've gotten to the point where we have decent performance and range out of cars. One car brand has a high valuation due to projected growth but at this time, most of the cars in the world are some type of ICE car. At this time, a lot of countries are trying to figure out how to get their electrical grids up to deal with demands if a growing EV market. Battery manufacturers can't meet demands. The whole industry isn't clean and some are trying to clean it up. There are challenges and standards that haven't even been established yet. You don't have a crystal ball and none of the people that sound exactly like you have one as well. In growth, things may or may not happen as we perceive them to go based on projections of the day. I think it's better to think in scenarios of what may work out and what may not and what can and possibly will slow down EV adoption rather than this will happen as though you actually know. Right now, Toyota is being pragmatic, trying to time the market, and has the resources to make the necessary adjustments they'll need to make. I'm curious how their first EVs will be received. They clearly modeled the bz4X after the RAV4, one of the most popular, bestselling cars on the planet, so let's see how an electric vehicle similar to it sells. Then they'll go from there.

Toyota wasted too much time and money on hydrogen cars. The Mirai had to be practically given away by Toyota with the insane incentives. Toyota should have focused more on battery electrification earlier on. The Toyota Prius is just not keeping up with the times. It's too slow (0-60 10 seconds, 120 hp) and the MPG figures aren't that impressive anymore in 2022. Even their own Camry Hybrid LE gets about the same MPG while it has around 200 hp. The 25 miles range EV range for the Prius Prime would be impressive if it's 2010 right now. On the other hand, Toyota can't seem to make enough RAV4 Prime CUVs. Why do people buy it? It's because it's a crossover with 40 miles EV range and 300 hp AWD. I think Toyota should make a Camry Prime and Sienna Prime with the same powertrain. How would a 50 mile EV range Camry or 35 mile EV range Sienna sound? Toyota is riding on their reputation of high reliability and attainable cost. Tesla cars are still too expensive for most people. Heck, their prices keep going up all the time. We are moving further and further away from that $35K model 3 Elon had promised years ago. Now it's $47K for just a SR!!! The prices are trending up. How am I supposed to believe that EVs will the affordable in the near future? It won't matter how long Tesla's powertrain can last if the batteries dies. The car is effectively worthless by then. Also, how are we all going to charge our cars without killing the grid? I doubt we can power our own neighborhood even if every house has solar panels. Can you power your house with those rooftop panels alone? Well, maybe if you are rich and you have a big solar array on your big lot and battery storage. So, most people will still need the grid. The problem is that the grid can barely cope already. Utility companies are always asking customers to cut back on power consumption on hot days due to all the ACs running only periodically as they are cycling to maintain set temperature. Now imagine if everyone wanted to charge their cars at home after work when they sleep and the cars are drawing power continuously for hours. Oh and let's not forget those solar panels aren't going work at night either. Also, even during summer peak usage season not every place serviced by the grid's network is going to be hot at the same time. So if the grid operators can't even deal with air conditioning loads with the help of solar power, how are they going to deal with high demand at night without the help of all those rooftop solar? I suppose I can charge my car at home during the day while I'm at work. For those that don't live in a home, they can charge their EVs at public charging stations for a few hours after sunrise when the solar panels come online before going to work.

The draw back however is the low range in EV mode and after a certain speed it just switches on the petrol even if you're fully charged. I think Toyota can really fill the gap in the market for those who want the best of both world by just increasing the battery capacity, more efficient motors and an upgrade option. Currently the older Prius models can't take advantage of the better batteries as they only can use the original battery designs.

For an EV, you have to mine to get the battery material which is the size of the whole car. So for the lifetime of the car, essentially all that does is neutralize the environment from the pollution made from the mining. With hybrids, the battery could easily be made with recycled materials since it's way smaller. That's my viewpoint anyways

I think Toyota is playing it smart. Why force someone to buy what you want them to buy. Toyota is giving them a choice, everyone can’t afford a 50k ev

Toyota are going to lose massive market share in the move to electric. They are way too late to the game to compete, with Tesla or the Chinese.

Imagine a country trying desperately to hold onto its legacy jobs (for petrol engine parts) rather than embracing the future (EVs). This short of economic myopia will be disastrous in the long run.

it'll be 2050 and ill still be cold starting my straight piped V8 at 5am, I don't give a shit about the latest and greatest. Chasing that shit just leads to debt and depression.

@@mitch9521 I'm happy for you. You enjoy your classic V8 pushrod. Toyota is making 4 cylinder fridges on wheels, at that level of enthusiasm, it's cheaper (in the long run) to go electric.

Japan runs on fossil fuels. They have not yet figured out that there is a Climate Crisis. It is time that Japan switch to wind and solar energy and all electric vehicles. Where are the environmentalists in Japan. Until recently Japan was financing coal power plants Asia. This is just crazy.

Everybody compares tesla to apple and the rest to Nokia but they fail to recognize Samsung, Toyota will be the Samsung in that story.

Cindy you don't understand the underlying Engineering realities here.. For those of us who really know, the complex trade offs between HEVs, PHEVs and BEVs means no one of these options is really the best one. It's not a Kodak or Nokia type scenario.

The problem is, some EV advocates have taken to a narrative. Tesla is Apple and Toyota is Nokia. Tesla is hardly Apple. Those are two different types of companies and although they both had/have bigger than life, cult-leader like CEOs, Apple was always design and aesthetics and appealing to the non-techy people. The ecosystems, yes, that's where they're somewhat similar. But a desktop/PDA/mp3 playing company (at the time) that goes to a tablet phone with a full touch screen isn't the same as a car. So, I don't buy into these parallels. There's all this talk about S-curves and disruptions but it doesn't take a lot of electricity or batteries to make consumer appliances vs. automobiles. Changing an infrastructure and going through mistakes will take longer. It's a direct parallel. I pro-EV but some EV enthusiasts need to see all sides of the auto industry status and not just get stuck into their narrative.
