1 month ago I purchased a AMD 7900 XTX, that GPU allowed me to play The outer worlds at 4K ultra settings. Out of pure curiosity I lowered the graphics quality from ultra to medium and I honestly could not see a difference. I could only see the difference when I set the graphics to low. And before anyone says my eyesight is bad its not, I recently got my eyes tested when I renewed my drivers license & all the letters were crystal clear.

Ultra is for screenshots, medium and high are for playing.

I agree, in fact medium is for multiplayer, high for single player and ultra for futureproofing.

The beauty of PC gaming is that you have the CHOICE, there are some times where certain settings absolutely affect how good or bad the game looks when going from ultra to high, but there are others where you will LITERALLY see no difference from even low to ultra. For example, volumetric fog/lightning on most games are HEAVY performance drainers when set to high (even on medium) and turning them off does affect how good some scenes can look, but when you drop them to low not only do you get up to 20-30 fps gains but the difference is so unnoticable you'd wonder why would ANYONE waste their pc resources on that setting instead of using it elsewhere. For me personally, a smooth gameplay experience > graphical fidelity, although i do draw the line in making the game look like a 2004 PS2 game, having the options will always be the main reason i went full PC gaming years ago.

I dont play and i dont make benchmark on Ultra. High is in most cases the same quality as ultra. Just set textures to very high/ultra and object quality to very high/ultra. Same graphics and 20% performance difference.

Max has been dead for like 10 years even 8 years ago it didnt show games showing a big difference from high,why people have made vids showing games benchmarking running in max is very odd its not realistic

Even though I have a 4090 I still don't use all ultra settings. Always try to find a balance between performance and visuals

I can see the difference, ultra looks better for me, i have a rx 7900 xtx so ultra is playable for me. With a 5600g, ultra 4k is the only setting that avoids bottlenecking
