Why US democracy is still in danger: the fight to vote

3 жыл бұрынThe new Georgia voting rights law makes it harder to vote, especially for communities that tend to vote for Democrats - and that's what Republicans want. But it's not just Georgia: these restrictive voting laws are being considered in nearly every state in America, from Arizona to Texas to Florida.

These efforts come on the heels of the 2020 presidential election, which Republicans lost by slim margins in several states. Many Republicans claimed they lost because of voter fraud - because people who were ineligible to vote found a way to skirt the rules and cast ballots. Election officials around the nation said there was no widespread fraud, but Republicans are using this argument to push for a wide array of laws that will skew election in their favor.
If enacted, Americans will have to ask a hard question: is the US still a democracy? Alvin Chang and Sam Levine explain this Republican effort to suppress voting rights as part of the Guardian's Fight to Vote series

It's always been a corporatocracy the senate and electoral college were created to restrain democracy and I mean you can't be that surprised when the majority of congress during the 1700's were rich land-owning slavers who only allowed land-owners to vote

That's missing the point; it's not the idea that getting ID is hard, but that it pushes chilling effects on voters and those on the fringes (which lean heavily towards one party) are definitely left out. It's about lopping off just the right numbers of votes to aggregate into large changes.

those are not excluding each other instead they mostly appear in sync The Dutch Republic for example even is a monarchy a republic and a democracy And America in theory is a democracy according to the constitution

@@antonysmyth2464 you have to register on the electoral roll in the uk which you need a specific national insurance number (which is only given to residence) so we do have a form of I'd voting

3:50 - Uh - I live in New Mexico, and we just finished our most successful legislature yet, and I can tell you that it was because R's were NOT in control of either state chamber OR the Governorship. So this map is inaccurate.

@@robertaperazzo6205 It's more difficult because hackers could hack millions of votes, but it would be difficult to rip up that many paper votes. Also, it would be easier to catch people ruining paper ballots.

I think it’s pretty ra¢ist to assume someone can’t get access to a DMV because of the color of their skin...... the only folks I know that have *no* access to DMV are rural people that have no DMV for miles around and no public transportation to get there if they do. This voter ID argument is so tired. Please get better more realistic talking points.

They don't need a drivers licence or passport. They can also show any other form of official documentation. Such as a Voter ID Card which is free to claim in that state.

And I'd say it's far from the most important thing we're behind on...public Healthcare, gun control laws, infastructure, etc. are far more important, in my opinion. It also wouldn't even be a conversation if getting said ID was as simple or affordable as it is in other countries.
