Why use Palm OS devices in 2020

Here I discuss why I continue to use Palm OS devices in the year 2020, focusing on two relatively new Palm OS 5 devices (the Palm T|X and Treo 700p). These still have decent internet connectivity as well as a plethora of internet, productivity, PIM, programming, gaming, and emulation apps available. I also discuss some differences with the Palm OS 1-4 68k devices, but I forgot to note that for the most part these have true serial connections while many Palm OS 5 devices are purely USB, which has implications for use as serial consoles.

Around 2009, I found a secret T5. It was a pre-production model that was owned by a Palm employee. The model number on the front was T3, and a serial number was stamped on the front and back. It also had a "Property of Palm" on the back. There were notes about Treo development, and reminders about a hardware meeting every Thursday.

There has never been a better calendar, contacts, and tasks than the Palm had. Not just the entry, but re-arranging the schedule, and the compact clear views.

I have a Treo 650. Always wanted a Palm TX which had WIFI built in, one of very few which offered that capability. My favorite Palm was the Zire 72 silver, I used it for everything until my dad accidentally put my shorts in the wash with it inside. My Zire M150 cracked down the middle of the screen when it was in my side pocket and I sat on it. I still have the Treo 650, never had Sprint and used it just as a PDA. The games on Palm were/are fantastic. Microbe Music Studio was a fantastic little music program that, along with the Game Boy Camera music sequencer, got me into music production. Now I use FL Studio and have my own home studio working on an album. Good times!

Just found my Tungsten/EZ in my storage unit I am cleaning out. First thing I did was order a new charge/data cable off Amazon. Can’t wait to power this thing up tomorrow. Loved this device back in the day.

Palm devices flew past me just because I was too young for them at the time. Years have passed. Now a Palm V (not even a Vx) is my favourite ebook reader. Seriously, clear screen, well legible fonts, weeks of battery life on a single charge, NO INTERNET - what else to want for my book time?

@@redacted5035 modern smartphone will hold a charge for about a day with very light use, thats nothing compared to devices like Palm. Also handwriting recognition in most smartphones kind of suck, and styluses arent as good as on palm

been getting into my T3 tungsten. i was wondering if something like a custom keyboard would help with using some apps, such as a keyboard controlled by a rasp pi, where each key could trigger a macro on the palm? im wondering about modding a palm with a bigger battery too

Hi, you probably have a file management app like filez or resco that I can use. I can't seem to hotsync with the internet to download those apps to my palm. Perhaps I could send you an old 32mb SD card and you could copy those essential apps onto it and send it back to me. That would be much appreciated.

i still have my targus blue tooth stow-a-way keyboard, that thing is still awesome, but its been collecting dust for about 15 years lol, but that may change soon

Some of these devices use lipo batteries, and if you are lucky you can replace de old battery with a new one of slightly increased capacity. My Clie Peg NX70V comes originally with a 1000mah battery, but you can fit a 1300mah one that is slightly bigger but with 30% more of capacity. Also if you get a sony that has a slot for MemoryStick, you can find nowadays MemoryStick adaptors that allow you to insert an SD card.

@@walnuthills11 Yeah I started with the Treo 600, then the 650, and later supported the 750 series that ran on WinCE. I remember liking the Palm OS Treos more than the WinCE versions; despite their more primitive hardware, Palm OS was so well optimized that the 600\650 ran much faster than the 750's that came later, which had better hardware but were sluggish on WinCE. The 750's did sync better with Outlook, though, whereas on the Palm Treos you had to constantly fiddle with that "Palm Desktop" software, always struggling to keep my doctors' Outlook calendars syncing reliably. But when it worked, those little Treos were great. I worked at a hospital and we later moved to Blackberries exclusively, then ditched them for iPhones and got rid of our BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server). But I'll always have a soft spot for the old Treos...

HI I HAVE A BIG QUESTION. About the palm tungsten E. How do you transfer files via Bluetooth from ur computer to ur pda?

I think there is only BT on the Tungsten E2, not the E. But anyway, I transfer via FTP using Resco Explorer or just the BT "Send File" tool on my PC.

I had a few of these back in the time. My last one got stolen. It was one of the colour ones and had some cool little games on it I'd play in my spare time. Of course this was before smart phones.

an EXE file you need to install on your computer, it will contain the installer that you can hotsync to your palm, docs to go is on palmdb

Possibly! I would have to read up. I don't think any Palms had built-in GPS though.

Addit was like a 3rd party proto-appstore, was actually quite nice at the time The compatibility layer that allows OS4 and under applications to run was very good and usually only older apps that directly access hardware wouldn't work but if they used the normal Palm APIs it would 99% of the time work Also don't forget the usefulness in it being offline for stuff like PWs, crypto wallets and anything else you might want private and the PIM is still pretty top notch and there's some apps that are just useful and still work and aren't available for either Android or iOS

Form me, the palm treo phones was the best of the best. Now have an Iphone, but if the treo phones came back in the future I would switch to them without thinking about it

I still have Treo 750v and because of Windows Mobile, it is still sorta usable. You can still make calls and send SMS no problem, I have like 4 spare batteries so battery life is no problem and I used it couple years back as my "working outside" phone.

Nice! I love my Treo 700p battery life as well. I have the extended battery. Sadly it doesn't work with cell service here any more.

I used to use the Treo phones and I loved them. I was also a Palm WebOS user. I think that was better than iOS in many ways and I am still angry with HP for burying it after spending 3 billion dollars to acquire it. :-/

@@KD5NJR Yeah, there are so many great platforms that would be amazing today if they were simply allowed to evolve. The PalmOS phones and even the Apple Newton MessagePad. Imagine what they would be now.

i recently bought a sony nr70v palm os device, but the ebay seller shafted me and never sent it. so i am off to get another. i had one back in the day but dont remember what happened to it. i normally keep all the cool tech gear. i am wondering how well it will sync with win 10. I work in IT, and have grown tired of the big tech shanegens and just want to start building back some of my older options so i can stop being so reliant on these shysters. plus it think it would be fun to play around with it all again. i was big into tech before i even could drive a car back in the late 80s, and really deep dived on palm os from about 2000 until i dived into pocket pc also in the early 2000's, which i still have all of those deivices. about i have thousands of palm apps, games etc etc and cant wait to get that stuff going again.

3:58 That toggles the on-screen Graffiti on/off. Off, you can only input characters through the Graffiti area on the bottom. In your video at that time index, it's replaced with on-screen keyboard (which can be swapped out for the Graffiti input area). With it on, the whole screen (for the most part) can accept Graffiti input. FUN FACT: Sony dropped the CLIE line so they could focus their efforts on developing the PSP!

@@walnuthills11 I think they saw "the writing was on the wall". FWIW, the PSP did OK, which is sort of a bummer (and this is coming from someone who prefers Nintendo!)

What do you feel is the better PDA for planning, a palm (the TX being the latest, I think?) or an ipaq? Sync should be possible with Linux. I know for palm there is jpilot

I think the Palm. Much more software available and easier sync via Jpilot as you said. I use Jpilot on my Linux laptops and it works great!

When i think of palm i think about the older ones from the 90s i have some bad memories of them they are very primitive and i was not impressed but i forgot they where still around in the 2000s this looks a lot better i should have had them back then.

All pocket sized, portable computers were primitive back in the '90s. By design, these 'organisers' were small, fast, reliable and the batteries lasted ages. Palm OS was very efficient and there was a huge software library. The 'Pocket PC' and Windows CE devices may have had faster processors, but the the OS was clunky, slow and ate through batteries at an alarming rate. So much so, that despite being one of the biggest/richest companies in the world, MS gave up on the OS after version 6.

@@another3997 Windows Mobile IIRC (not to be confused with "Windows Phone", which was defunct around mid 2010s) had the issue where they tried to shoehorn an entire desktop OS into a screen that needed to be 4x bigger than what it was. I also hear that tapping on the 'x' doesn't close a window. It minimizes it, which is confusing because you'd at least expect that same workflow being familiar with desktop Windows.

You're not supposed to pronounce OS as one word it's an abbreviation for Operating System therefore it's pronounced as 2 separate letters.

Yeah, sorry, please redub the audio, it's really distracting to hear "Palmos" over and over. A suggestion, you might want to introduce them as "Palm OS" devices, but then refer to them as "the devices" (gesture as needed) or call them by their models as needed, for example "The TX" or "The 700p". After all, we already know what family the devices belong to or we wouldn't be watching the video.

Palm STILL beats all alternatives for what I consider base apps - calendar, contacts and todo. I can't get over how backward 'modern' devices are with data input. Don't get me started on the 'scrolly-wheel' model for times and dates on iOS, I still can't believe that was ever a thing and is still in use. So Sloooooowwwww (and frustrating). The fact iOS didn't come with a built-in todo list until v5 and then, it was bare-bones awful is a great example of how the development wasn't about productivity but gimmickery. Palm was faster at the basics - MUCH faster (and with not even close to the same processor speed)

Palm was definitely more slick than WinMo back in the day...but Windows Mobile has a native Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 port. Does Palm OS? Does it even matter in 2020 when you could emulate the DC version on a literal refrigerator or better yet play the definitive PC port with everything maxed out on the cheapest netbook or a fifteen year old tower you fished out of the trash.

I used to love the Palm Tungsten I believe it was called. So much good potential. The only thing that SUCKED was that their OS was inefficient especially with memory and there was only this one asshole independent developer ( I think Dmitry was his name) was the only one to come out with a fix and he was a fucking outrageous asshole. Dude was a sociopath. And of course, it falls to this asshole to have come up with a short term solution with his apps. I had finally had enough that I went to Windows OS. Worlds better.
