The Non-Canon Expert looks at how Darth Vader initially responded when learning that the Rebel Alliance, which was so easily and wrongfully dismissed by the Empire before the Battle of Yavin, was growing powerful and dangerous, explaining Darth Vader's initial satisfaction when making this conclusion about the Empire's enemy in the years prior to the Original Trilogy and then why the Sith Lord would come to regret this first conclusion years later.
This is a Legends story for Darth Vader with information found in a number of Legends sources, but primarily within the Legends novel "Star Wars: Death Star" and "Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare." I hope that you enjoy it!

The rebellion also could have distracted Sidious/Palpatine long enough for Vader to get his chance to usurp and destroy Palpatine once and for all. All Vader would have need was to wait till the full distraction of Emperor Palpatine and strike him down.

Vader is the one who set in motion the joining of the Rebels in Star Wars Rebels. If you watch, he brought them together to supposedly destroy them but really he organized and brought them all together. If not for Vader the Rebels would not have become so organized. So perhaps it was his secret plan the whole time. Vader took 20 years to attemtp his coup.

Then swoop in and capture (then execute) the Rebel high command as a warning to the galaxy to not do that... Then Starkiller said no u and became a martyr, a symbol of hope, doing the exact opposite of what Vader wanted.

In legends Vader's plan with his apprentice Starkiller was to disguise as a Jedi and "help"organise the leadership to create the rebellion in order to distract the Emperor so Vader can strike when the timing was right. But then it was also revealed that the Emperor knew of this all along and used it to his advantage by finding all his enemies in one location and then send Vader to bring them to him so he could personally execute them. But with Starkiller's sacrifice, the rebel leaders got away, So Vaders initial plan could still work as intended, he just needed a new apprentice, so he cloned Starkiller. The rebellion was Vader's plan all along.

Yes, this. I love how the force unleashed portrayed the emperor and Vader using everything to outcome to their own favor, even in the force unleashed 2 is pretty much implied that Vader being caught by the rebels was a trap so they could know where the Rebellion base was hidden and slaughter them. Everything was calculated by the Emperor and Vader since the very beginning, it was just them playing with everyone.

Shantien The Great in some ways I like it but in other ways I don't because it kind of ruins Bail Organa's and Mon Mothma's roles a bit, you'd imagine they were already planning a big rebellion long before the events of the game, which is something the new Canon does quite well. Maybe if they re-canonise elements of Starkillers story but push it back a decade or so before A New Hope, Starkiller get kidnapped and trained a few months after ROTS at 10 years old instead of aged 3, he becomes a grey Jedi at aged 20 by meeting the likes of Rahm Kota and Ahsoka tano and Starkillers story happens in a similar manner after but instead of him dying he gets away with Juno and Proxy and the others, rather than him being a clone later which didn't make much sense.

I’m pretty sure Mothma and Organa has some kind of planning underway considering how quickly they joined a stranger and immediately knew what to do. Starkiller was more of a catalyst to bring these key players together.

Gaius Wyrden yes you’re correct but he’s still a catalyst whether you’re talking about canon lore or irl storytelling techniques. But I’m really not interested in your hate boner, if you just personally dislike Starkiller that’s fine, I just don’t give a fuck. I enjoyed the game, the story and the characters. You simply won’t change my mind. You’re definitely right about why he’s so op though.

Seeing Leia and Vader in the illustration towards the end made me realize Vader never got to have a father daughter relationship with her, if he ever even learned she was his daughter. He just felt Luke thinking about his sister shortly before his death, but it is unclear if he ever realized who his daughter actually was. Sad when you think about it. I wonder how Vader felt when he became aware of the existence of a daughter of his during his final moments, that must've taken him aback quite a bit, which could also explain how Luke was able to overcome him. Although he did learn Leia was his daughter when he became a Force ghost in Legends and even had a meeting with her as Anakin, but she rebuked him for his actions as Vader and never forgave him. That would be understandable however considering he tortured her personally in Ep 4 when he questioned her, and went on to torture her boyfriend in Ep 5. Star Wars is messed up.

Thank you DW! That's a great question, and I wish I could provide a detailed answer with evidence. I am trying to remember how the scene played out in the RotS novelization. They were definitely panicked with the sudden move to Mustafar, and questioned whether Grievous could carry out the war at that point (which interestingly enough Grievous questioned himself to Sidious if I remember it right). But a great question that I should go back and look up.

Of course Vader would be glad. In addition for something to do, it's also a distraction from the incompetence that many of his men had. Too bad it wasn't that successful of a distraction, as Captain Nida and several others found out the hard way.

You'd get bored too if you had nobody to give you a good challenge. Why do you think so many villains let heroes get away with so many things? Because it's about the only excitement in their lives at that point. For Vader, it's either do mundane stuff, thinking about regret of his past life...or let a rebellion rise up and give Vader a reason to show why he was the Dark Lord of the Sith.

I'm not a Star Wars guy. I've only ever watched the original trilogy. And I haven't read the books. But I love this and other Star Wars channels! The stories and characterizations echo geopolitical history, philosophical concepts, and sociology---in an entertaining way. In this episode, we see the need of an establishment, as represented by Vader, to have an enemy to justify and reinforce a position of power.

There is one thing that disturb me. You said the moment in question(the one in your title) happened in 3 BBY. But the Rebel Alliance was formed in 2 BBY just after the death of Starkiller. So there is a contradiction. But the novel Death Star appear in 2007 and the Force Unleashed appear in 2008 so maybe they didn't really thought about it in the Force Unleashed's scenario. What do you think about it ?

Yes and if speculation is correct Anakin was powerful enough to nudge Padme to agree with him without consciously doing it Leia may have been able to do the same or Bail could have told them that Leia was Anakin and Padme daughter without revealing Vader’s identity
