VAR, video assistant referee, has been a huge topic of discussion in World Cup 2018 in Russia. In this video Jaymike and Joltter talk about VAR and debate the pros and cons of implementing VAR into professional football. VAR, video assistant referee, has been brought into football to help referees make right decisions on the pitch but so far a lot of people have not been satisfied about how VAR has been implemented to the game. In this video we tell you what VAR, video assistant referee, is all about aswell as go through some of the potential scenarios that VAR might evolve into in the sport of football. What do you think about VAR and do you think it will make football a better sport - or is it a piece of technology that shouldn't be brought into football? Let us know your thoughts about VAR in the comments below!

I think var is good , because the last years referees did many mistakes that deside the game .But referees have to stop using it every single time . For penalty situations i think refs need this ,because 90% of players dive for a penalty.

I think VAR in football should be more like VAR in Ishockey... The coach gets to decide ONE time in a game if he wants the referee to look at the footage. That way it keeps the game rolling but also can help the referee to make a fair decison. My opinion :D

VB MUTT the ball was out of play and kompany retracted the tacke. Also, if the referee sees it directly, he tells the var officials he's seen it and unless it's a clear error, there is no need to show him again

To say there is no drama or passion in the game because of VAR, sounds kind of silly to me...and to be fair to FIFA, VAR has gotten better in the knockout stages. Also, many players are not used to VAR yet, so now they know they cannot get away with certain things because they know VAR will be used. And as Jay Mike said, VAR will improve as time goes by. This past season VAR was used in the Bundesliga, and I personally think they did a reasonably good job using this new technology.

In my opinion referee errors shouldn’t be part of any sport or competition, because its not fair against a team. If something happens it needs to be seen. Thats for VAR. In the other hand the referees became really insecure because of that, they are like: “it doesn’t matter if im right or not, 5 other guys are making my job with the ability to watch it again so whatever” and that pisses me of to be honest! But I respect both of your opinions and the video is great as always, keep up unisport ✌🏼

As an NFL fan, I can say that this was the same issue when NFL added Instant Replay. However, we all got used to it and it didn’t change the game all that much. Furthermore, while it overturned a lot of bad calls because they can see things slower and closer than initially, it definitely will not take out the human error and debate over particularly controversial calls. I will say, the way it slows down football will be different. American football is used to a lot of stops and starts throughout the game, so a brief break in the action doesn’t dramatically impact the flow of the game. However, a major part of football is the non-stop motion of the game and VAR does negatively impact that game flow.

I think var should only be used in certain situations and there should be no people in the background calling the referees because they could make a bad decision. For example in the penalty box the referee can CHOOSE to go to var.

There is another big point against VAR that Joltter didn't mention: The atmosphere in the stadium with the fans paying their money and the players on the pitch are not really free in their emotions, because they always look at the ref after a goal Was scored, who then checks wether it was offside and that stuff on his headphone and after all of that everyone can finally cheer a second time, but it is not the same explosion of emotions that you got without VAR.

Hey unisport! I am sadiq and I live in India.I am a big fan of football and yours, you had asked that we have to leave our thoughts in the comments so here's what I think:VAR the video assistant refree should only be used at extreme moments and by this I mean that whenever there is a controversy between the ref and the players regarding a foul, handball or a goal etc. That is not too clear for the ref to understand or in any case of misunderstanding

All in all, VAR isn't all that time consuming, especially when compared to other sports video reviews like American football. It's especially helpful with refereeing when it comes to awarding penalties, but it has definitely led to a bit too much leniency when it comes to offsides calls or penalty calls because of sort of "reliance" on the system. But it has stopped Neymar from flopping (at least in the quarters) which was amazing

Here’s my 2 cents: While VAR in theory is a good idea, it hasn’t proved to be any more reliable than the on field ref’s decisions. However, I’m all for change in the game! I feel like there are better ways to change the game to be more entertaining and fair. Here is what I would do... 1. Keep VAR. BUT only allow the captains of each team to contest a decision using the video ref 2 times in the whole game. That way the captains will have to be wise about asking for VAR and it can only interfere in a match a max of 4 times. 2. I think a bigger, better way to make the game more entertaining and faced paced, and also make the game fair, would be to stop the clock every time the ball goes out of play or when there is a stoppage of any kind. They might have to reduce the 90 mins to 70 to compensate but it would stop the boring time wasting tactics deployed by teams that are ahead so often. (Diving and over exaggerating, kicking the ball away, tying their bloody shoe laces 😏) 3. There should also be a sin-bin sort of thing. When a player dives or does a deliberate foul of any sort, they can be sent off to the sin-bin for 10 mins and the team will be down a player as a result. I think change is good, but they have rushed into using technology to try to fix problems in the game rather than introducing new smart thinking rules. These ideas aren’t even really my own as they are just taken from basketball and other sports

I like VAR because it brings more importance to how the players actually perform on the field. Games are won or lost by poor reffing decisions. It helps isolate who the better team is, not just who got favorable reffing decisions.

What I hate the most about VAR is that the review isn't shown to the ref until he asks for it. For example, in the France-Argentina game, there was obviously a handball in the penalty area, but the review wasn't even shown because the ref didn't ask for it. It should be shown even if he didn't ASK for it, because sometimes he misses the handball or foul.

The fact of the matter is the game is faster than ever before and referees cannot catch mistakes but they can provide assurance to the players and fans that the game was fair for example in 2014 robben dived against Mexico for a penalty and won the game from it. The way that var would've completely changed the outcome of that game, is the future of football - this way there is less controversy I'm games so you can at least enjoy the game for what it is and stop arguing with your friends if that "should've" been a penalty

VAR is a useful tool, but it must be regulated correctly. For instance, in American Football we have video review similar to that of VAR: the play happens and during certain big moments another referree sitting in the video box (not on the field) makes the determination the play needs to be reviewed. However, if let's say a touchdown occurs, and they review the play and see that the player did in fact score BUT his teammate committed a penalty the play still goes on and no penalty is given. Because the penalty was not called live, in action on the field, it cannot be retroactively enforced. This would be useful in the cases where the ref makes a judgement call and says "no penalty, no PK". If they don't call it on the field, they cannot call it later on.

I agree with Joltter. Remember the Nike ad for the last World Cup, the Last Game? If football continues this way, then what happened in that vid will likely happen on this world and I agree with Joltter, I don’t want to see the game I love become trashed with perfection and no risk. Risk everything. That was the Nike slogan for the last World Cup

I think VAR should only be used in special cases. 1. giving a penalty 2. when a player is injured 3. to punish players for diving or unsportsmanlike hard tackles, but not directly; just the next time the game is stopped (goal kick, foul etc.), to not interrupt the flow of the game. IMO it shouldn’t be used for offside, cause the rules say, that in doubt the refs should rule for the attacker, and if a human eye can‘t see it then that‘s clearly a doubt for me.

To sum up: VAR as an idea is a good tool to fix tournament changing calls or non calls. However it hasn’t been implemented very well. If it becomes seamless and efficient and only used when needed, then I’m for it. Almost every other sport has some kind of video replay, and they still have great attendance. Why not this one?

The group stage was overall not as fun to watch as previous world cup group stages bc it felt like every other goal scored was off a penalty, which in my opinion, is the most boring way to score in a football match (unless it's a penalty shootout bc those are nerve racking as hell). VAR only really comes into play when there is a call made around the box anyways. For instance, in the Senegal vs Colombia match, the penalty that was taken back by the ref was crap bc that would have been a foul anywhere else on the field, but bc it was inside the box it was called back for review and the ref changed his mind, which slowed down the game and took away all the passion and emotions felt by fans that they had from the original call. If VAR was used everywhere on the field as much as it was around the box there would be a 2min break after nearly every single call the ref makes and that would be unbearable to watch. However, I don't think VAR is going away anytime soon despite myself and many others who are against it, so I'm just hoping that the world cup final match, or any other championship match, is not won or lost off of a VAR penalty. VAR is still a new thing though, so hopefully they can work on fine tuning it in the future, but as of now I'm totally against it bc of all the passion it takes away from the fans and how it slows down the pace of the game.

Var is a great idea but it must be delivered better. It seemed sloppy and could have been used better

You guys will love VAR against Barca and Madrid in UCL. It’s being misused at the WC but UCL it’s where it’ll peek

Whenever your team loses because of bad decisions then that’s when you’d want VAR and I think that without it there would probably be only one team winning and winning all the time meaning your team would never get a chance to win in a long time. It’s there for the better of everyone including fans.

VAR is a 50/50 to being a good option and being a bad option. I know everyone hates when we have to get back to the same foul every few seconds but u know it is the future. I believe it's good but it has some down sides. I agree with u guys on the change, we grew up watching or playing football naturally without these equipment but u guys gotta adapt to the new technology because this is the future. Love u guys and stay blessed.

I guess VAR in football should be done like how it's done in cricket where a team can have one or two unsuccessful review only the captian can take a review for his team this will definitely help and there will be less use of VAR

3:20 that should NOT be part of football. even with VAR, there still will be errors, dramas etc, just less. I still remember when Henry scored a goal against Ireland (I think), after the ball touched his hand twice. France goes through, and Ireland goes home, that was bs. we don't need that in football.

Man the VAR is good, if we had the VAR in 2014 Robben’s penalty against Mexico would be canceled and Mexico would made history and knowing that Robben cheated and my country didn’t qualified to the next round is heartbreaking

It should be like a team can get only 1 chance to use VAR in a game, maybe one more in added 30 minutes in the RO16, QFs semis and final

As good as the idea is, they miss too many calls and they review too many calls that shouldn’t be reviewed. For instance, the supposed foul that led to Colombia’s goal against Japan should’ve (but wasn’t) been reviewed as Falcao had actually quite clearly dived to win the free kick. But then in other situations, the ref decides to review and hand Iran a penalty for Cedric’s unintentional hand ball. VAR is too flawed, unless they’re gonna make the right calls and the right match changing decisions, it should be left out of football.
