Poor Charleroi. Hit with high unemployment and social issues, the city has been trying hard over recent years to change its image. I visit the city for 24 hours to witness its building sites, which are transforming the city of the past into a city of the future. #CHARLEROI #BELGIUM

I remember when I first came across moules frites, a local showed me a way of eating them. He said to use a fork to eat the first mussel and then use the now empty shell as tweezers to extract the mussels from the subsequent shells. That way you only ever need to put one shell to your mouth, with the bit you want to eat presented as if on a fork.

That's interesting! Mussels are quite popular over here in Spain, but have never thought of eating them like that. We'll give it a go next time and see how people react 😀😀

Despite the constructions sites, you managed to find some little gems there in Charleroi - the waffle van (of course) the art deco area was superb, I could have spent ages there looking at all the architecture, that little moules café with the huge fishing murals was great too, and the beautiful church interior. I am watching this in 2024, so your chocolate is not out of date!

I was in Charleroi a few weeks ago and the construction in front of the train station was very much still there. If you ever fly to Charleroi (or indeed Brussels) again, take the train to Dinant. It's absolutely stunning. One of the most beautiful little towns I've ever seen.

About ten years or more ago I did a half day trip to Charleroi. The 11:45 Ryanair flight from Manchester to Charleroi (£5) then the bus into Charleroi Sud where I caught a lovely double deck train into Bruxelles Midi (Free, incuded in Eurostar ticket). In Bruxelles I had enough time for a bite to eat and at least 5 beers,. Next was my first trip on a Eurostar, just a couple of hours back to St Pancras (about £35). A walk down the road to Euston for my cheap advanced single back to Manchester arriving around 22:15. Not a bad afternoon out :-))

Scott, a great entertaining video again, thank you. But I just have to comment, I recently watched with interest your video about your visit to 3 Travelodge hotels was it Fort William some other and Glasgow? My wife and I stayed at the Glasgow airport Travelodge back in April 23, we were in a room almost directly opposite your room. I also remember an evening walk into Paisley half an hour or so away. As we got closer to the town centre we both remained speechless as we looked around, we were very pleased that we saw almost no one as we walked along a couple of main streets. Could Paisley also be described as 'she's not pretty - but she has character' or were we treading the wrong main street.

Surrealistic, isn't it ? :) The problem is that when they turned the airfield into an airport, nobody in the country believed in this project, they thought it was just a waste of money. And then they were surprized by the enormous success of the airport (more than 8 million passengers a year). So, they never planned a decent public transport connexion. There's actually a tramway (premetro) line which passes very close to the airport, but they never cared to build a branch to the terminal... Anyway, Charleroi calls itself "metropole", but it's a ghost from the past. It does have a lot of potential however, with a premetro system (line 5 will soon open toward a new hospital), a large railway station, suburban railways, an airport... I hope one day they can stop whining about their misery and start evolving to meet their potential. The works in front of the railway station are finished, by the way.
