@Couldnt_Be_Bothered I think it comes down to 3 facts: Obeka was talked about more than any other build around in a while, at least from my experience. It's an artifact that can go in any deck. It's counterplay is linear and simple, it just causes the upkeeps to skip

@@jimzh7669 it stops things like black market connections, bonehoard dracosaur etc. from generating value. other than that i wouldn't dream of playing this. Certainly not to deal with obeka.

@JadeIsBunny the card has a good effect but I just thought about it. If it can stop a good deck they can just run removal for it. Artifacts are far from being a difficult to remove permanent that most decks can probably run and for 5 the cost to remove it is always positive

So... this is a bit weird to talk about, but I actually put an Eon Hub on my sideboard for when I go off with The One Ring. Not having to pay life for its counters gets super busted, but the 5 mana cost hurts outside of colorless. At least with my own personal experiences. There's usually more upside to playing cards *with* upkeep triggers, but if an opponent is popping off with them, it's nice to shut it down. Glad I got mine when it was under a buck.

But there are mucb better ways to not die to your ring. Play sheoldred, or some ways to bounce your ring like ottawara or actual bounce spells, or draw so much you just get to your next ring, or things like three steps ahead can even copy it and then legend rule the big one away

Usually the deck will be full of upkeep triggers whether you kill obeka or not tho. Spot removal won't help much

@@KenpachiPoker Those upkeep triggers aren't nearly strong enough to end a game, much less warrant a 5 cmc artifact. Sure, everyone may die within 4-5 turns, but that's if they don't end the game way before that happens.

A lot of the spree cards are very satisfying, being overcosted early vs. being able to 'ramp' into bigger effects if you draw it later in the game is a very fun archetype

I hate hate HATE, that people just drop "finance play" or "bought out" like its just something that happens from aether, and not financial speculation analogous to insider trading. These are things that destroys MTG.

Just so its clear, that was just my speculation since I can't figure out another reason for the buyout, but I do agree, it is like insider trading (except its not illegal, since there are not regulations in MTG, so it's more unethical than anything).

Obeka alone still doesn't make sense for Eon Hub to spike. Very niche hate cards rarely get bought out like that over cards that are good WITH the commander. And even so, I'm never paying 5-mana for Do Nothing against every other deck that Obeka players can still easily bounce/destroy. Saying "Obeka" is a knee-jerk response that logically makes no sense. I imagine like Seth speculated, there's either an unspoiled card driving it, or something like a unspoiled new Cumulative Upkeep-like mechanic coming that Eon Hub eliminates the draw back.

Has anyone thought about eon hub in conjuction with the pact cards? Like at your next upkeep you lose the game if you can't do "X". Or bypassing cumulative upkeep or any number of cards that are quite strong but you must sac at upkeep. Maybe that's why it's gone up? And probably insider info on some cars coming out that benefits heavily from this thing in the same way playing the pact cards without downsides

Like when someone's going to play a stupid strong Aessi deck and I don't want to deal with it I'll play Nekusar.

Whoever is saying its an obeka counter what are you even talking about?? Unless you are in a hyper specific matchup (because other than obeka there are only a few widely played upkeep cards, some of which you pry want in your deck), it is literally a 5 mana do nothing artifact. Such a steep price increase is almost certainly a spec call for whatever reason. No one else jamming this casually in decks unless they are literally metagaming their playgroup or hoping that of the hundreds of new legends they run into its exactly obeka lol

@@Badassest initiative doesnt get countered by this, you just play more creatures that give the initiative. Everything else is all addressed by what I already said. Far too hyper specific to be the reason for a buy out. Prismatic bridge has been a top commander for two years, and beyond that theres like maybe one or two other commanders in the top 100 that have meaningful upkeeps that you “must” counter. If I have an obeka deck and see you playing it to counter me ill laugh in your face cause you put one specific hose card for exactly one deck in the entire format lol

There always comes a time where I think "Hey, maybe EDH players have learned how to build decks in a reasonable way, that allows them to effectively deal with problem cards instead of crying and bitching about every other deck in the format as a turn 0 counterspell" ....and then y'all trying to convince people this FIVE MANA easy-to-remove permanent is tech against one single specific commander. Sure, guys. Counterspells, spot removal, board wipes, burn spells and whatever else exist. But sure. At this point, I am convinced some of you sincerely ARE this special when it comes to building decks. And I say that as a casual player myself. Screw cEDH winning on turn 2 nonsense. Gimme hour long beer and pretzels sessions with friends.

Yes! Think the Invasion of Alara/Bramble Familiar combo that was hot in standard recently. Cards that check for a mana value only care about the one on the nameline- so flip-cards and Adventures that are more expensive than the creature it's on can be cheated out that way.

You missed "insider knowledge influencing buyouts" And don't listen to people saying obeka is the cause for eon hub. Obeka is sub par and single card buyouts never happen due to some single new commander. 100% something down the line, maybe even past modern horizon 3, is going to absolutely need that card to be kept in check.

Eon Hub is clearly a counter to Obeka and other Upkeep shenanigans from Doctor Who, etc. Obeka is a busted commander, and a bunch of people are building it. If you're not playing Obeka, it's still fine because Artifact decks have great looting and sacrifice options.
