Full Susanne de Passe interview: / @joshflagg
If Motown was a family then Berry Gordy was the father. Father's are known for making tough and unpopular decisions for the good of the family. When you take a close look at Motown there's no need to doubt that he made the record label an unqualified success. However, many of the artists that left Motown feel that they were not dealt with squarely. In the last episode Holland Dozer Holland, who were absolutely a large part of Motown's first decade of success quit in a flurry of lawsuits. This catastrophic resignation happened just as the Jackson 5 were laying down tracks at Motown;s Detroit headquarters Hitsvlle USA.
The Jackson 5 had trouble with commitments they made to Atlantic records soul music imprint Atco. Berry Gordy also had to contend with Richard Arons, whom it appears that Joe Jackson was attempting to leave out of the Motown deal. Meanwhile Michael. Jermaine, Jackie, Tito, and Marlon were laying down tracks and waiting for Berry Gordy to lay down a path and the go ahead to join the Motown LA era.
The Jackson 5 entered Los Angeles with visions of Disneyland and Malibu. For a few days the Boys enjoyed the sun and fun before they were sequestered away at the famous Hit Factory recording studio. Gordy's displeasure with the choice of tracks the boys recorded at Hitsville meant that he would be personally overseeing the making of their first album. This would put him in the path of an 1 year old wunderkind named Michael Joseph Jackson.

Alright. I have watched the entire video. I wanted to make a proper comment after fully watching it. I have said many times that Michael Jackson was a Motown artist EVEN AFTER he left Motown. There are companies like Motown, like the WWE, like Nintendo that leave a permanent imprint on you. It's like the nWo, the New World Order. When you're nWo, you're nWo...4 Life! When you're Motown, you're Motown...4 Life! The reason why Michael Jackson became the #1 Global Figure much less Artist in World History (only topped by The Bible & Jesus Christ himself-see Chartmasters' breakdown of this insane fact!) is because Michael went through the DOJO. Michael started in the Joe Jackson DOJO & got his initial training. Michael then honed his skills in the 1960s Chitlin' Circuit DOJO touring on the road. Michael then refined his skills further in the Motown DOJO helmed by Berry Gordy. These 3 DOJOS *guaranteed* that Michael, the most dedicated pupil in the Jackson 5, would become the Master. Sho'Nuff! Son Goku started with Master Roshi (Mutenroshi), the turtle hermit. Son Goku then trained with Kami in Kami's Lookout above the clouds. Son Goku eventually trained with King Kai, the North Kaio, in Heaven. Under these Masters in these DOJOS, Son Goku became #1 Under The Sun. He could exist on the Planet of the Kaioshins with the East Supreme Kai. He could even meet Zeno himself, the ultimate ruler of the multiverse. He could radiate past the bonds between worlds & universes because of the training he undertook in the DOJOS. The Michael Jackson & Son Goku connections are endless! Both even have a healthy child-at-heart that makes them better at their craft! The imprint of Joe Jackson's core 'Win At All Costs' ideology mixed with the experience of the Chitlin' Circuit in the Revolutionary 1960s mixed with the practices & ideas of Berry Gordy as well as the artist collective in Motown embedded success into Michael Jackson's veins. He had it all locked in FOR LIFE before he was even 15 years old. Motown was like a college for him & the lessons learned there made him good no matter where he went in his career. Even when the Jacksons & Motown were fighting after the split in 1975, you notice 3 years later in 1978 Michael working with Diana Ross on The Wiz, a Motown Production. Stephanie Mills who Diana Ross brutally replaced was once with Motown too. Suzanne DePasse's 1st project was the Jackson 5 & she saw them all the way through. Even after Suzanne DePasse became a mogul in her own right (Sister, Sister!) she STILL stayed linked to the Jacksons. Suzanne DePasse was in charge of the legendary miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream of 1992. The Gordys & the Jacksons even got linked in marriage/family through Jermaine so connections are permanent. I wouldn't even be surprised to see some latent Motown connections with this upcoming Michael biopic. Michael NEVER stopped being a Motown artist even when he worked at Epic for Sony/CBS. No surprise that the Moonwalk that became his trademark was displayed on Motown 25 through Billie Jean. Berry Gordy probably kicked himself constantly for letting the Jacksons get away from Motown directly but indirectly Motown aided their success. Even the almighty Thriller has Motown's imprint on it. Epic puts out a Michael album & then here comes Motown with some old 1970s throwbacks to reinforce Michaelmania. Berry Gordy's plan for the Jackson 5 wasn't just UNETHICAL GENIUS, it was DIABOLICAL GENIUS. Gordon Keith should always get the credit in the history books (and in payment hopefully one day) but Motown was the best bet for making the Jackson 5 the phenomenon that they are. No one else could do it like they did. Michael learned so much in that Motown DOJO that it stuck with him for the rest of his life. Crazy story this is. That's why so many people are fascinated with the Jackson story. PIONEERS!

I was twelve about to turn 13 years old and in the eighth grade when the Jackson Five released ‘I Want You Back’. It took a while to hear the complete song on the radio from the beginning, and then it was trying to figure out who made it, and where they were from. All that information came from the album after my older brother finally got it in about December 1969. I got to see them perform the song, for the first time, on the Andy Williams Show on Saturday night 01/31/1970. The rest of 1970 was spent trying to catch them on television again, as they got more popular from releasing more hits; like Dick Clark’s ‘American Bandstand’ three weeks later, (missed because of no prior notification of their appearance) where they debuted their next single ABC, and later in the summer on Ed Sullivan again, and the Jim Nabors Show, where they debuted ‘The Love You Save’, and ‘I’ll Be There’, respectively, both CBS shows missed because we couldn’t get CBS channels during the antenna era where stations broadcasting those shows couldn’t be seen if they were too far from your viewing area). Unfortunately, I didn’t see them perform again on television until April 1971 on the Diana Ross Special. By September 71 they were big enough to have their own Saturday morning cartoon and their own television special.

@@TheThrillerEffectthey were new so we had to wait until they got big enough for the media to start reporting on them. That didn’t happen until the song started getting higher on the charts, and more airplay on the radio. Until then we had to rely on unfounded rumors and people just making stuff up, like they were from Chicago, or they are the new group Diana Ross is leaving the Supremes for, or the lead singer is a little girl.

They worked Michael beyond what they should have and ruined his voice. In the younger years they had him singing too high for his range and during his voice change years, he shouldn’t have been singing until after his voice had completely changed. That is why he lost most of his range little by little until he could no longer sustain. They ruined his voice and he often struggled during that time, with his voice sounding strained and even cracking at times. Berry Gordy as much he did for black music, he was also did some jacked up things to those same black artists. He couldn’t get past Joe and he wanted total control of them, that is why he wanted to manage them. Joe knew this and knew what Berry was up to. If he had his way, that group would’ve imploded irreparably. He would’ve did to them what he did to the Supremes.

Ppl made at Joseph for all the wrong things. I know he really made Michael sad, pushed him the hardest...was a lil meaner to MJ but he KNEW his son. He wanted him to be tougher, stronger, quick minded , educated and to follow his lead. Joseph knew how dirty and sheisty ppl could be and protected his children from it. Of course they didn't want no smoke with ol Joe. He was a golden glove boxer and knew how to "make things happen". My mother is the female Joseph Jackson...so is my father. Both Leo's...I have ALOT of Virgo/Pisces in my natal chart like MJ. I totally understood him. My dad could be like Mrs. Katherine, gentle, kind, understanding but he could be scar from lion king when he has to. My mom is the same. Leo's will claw anything moving to protect their children

It is very unethical for the person that is a label head and owner to manage an artist. That’s way too much control!! The company already has a contract (which was iron clad by the way) and a financial stake in the artist, which they will recoup. Now add the fact that the label head and owner is your manager and receiving 10% of your earnings. That means anything you do, even outside of music he has control over and his hands in. Which is why Motown owned the “Jackson 5” name and when they left, they could no longer use their name or use any of their music without permission from Berry Gordy/Motown. It also meant that he could fire or remove a group member, like he did with the Supremes. If Joe hadn’t been there, he would’ve run amuck. The artists already see very little money because of what the label has to recoup, but add your label owner being your manager and he’s now double dipping. He’s getting his return, plus way more that he shouldn’t. He only managed the two most successful groups because he wanted control over them.
