Why wasn't Thailand Colonized?
As the powers of Europe began to grow and expand throughout the world’s history, colonialism became the forefront of this expansion. Over time, almost every non-European nation became a colony of one European nation or another at some point. Only a few countries managed to escape becoming overpowered by the Europeans, which makes us wonder, how did they do it? For a nation like Thailand, which was surrounded by British, French, and Dutch territories, there seemed to be no hope of avoiding colonialism. And yet, somehow, not the British, nor the French, or even the Dutch, ever colonized Thailand - and neither did any other European power. So if Thailand was never subject to colonialism, how did it manage to pull that off?...

It's also insane that Thailand is in the top ten tourism destinations in the world and yet also has had more military coups since 1950 than any other nation. How have they been able to keep enough stability for a robust tourism sector while having so much political instability?

Let them fight. As for us, we live our lives. Crazy politicians quarreling, What does it have to do with normal people? As long as no bullets or bombs landed on pedestrians's heads. Whoever wants to fight with whoever? Fu.k it. And most Thai people's lives have not changed. Everyone still needs to eat. So we continue to work and earn money. And tourism generates a lot of income for the country. Thai people are easy to smile and have a service mind.

@@user-tv4ih2kq6r I see the miscommunication. OP didn't mean 'join them' as in 'get conquered by them' but as in 'copy their techniques'. + funnily enough, if you look at the results, colonization is an innovation program, since anyone who was colonized or colonization or had to deal with it was ingrained with a desire to modernize to defend themselves. So it's like an indirect & unintentional modernization program
@user-tv4ih2kq6r
@user-tv4ih2kq6r 2 жыл бұрын
@@freddy4603 well... the purpose of those innovations wasnt for the people of their colonies; it was to strengthen their colonial territories to maintain their grasp of power. It just so happen that these things were inherited to their colonies when they got their independence. Addition as well that its learned common practice, so aligning their political system and such will now be more suitable because it is formed already in that way. The idea is the colonies have to adapt to these changes, not their colonizers granting them some magical wishes. So it wasnt all due to "colonization" rather the people who needs to adapt and survive in due of "colonization", that birthed to these innovations. Nonetheless; my point is they "joined them" because they need to adapt, if they dont-theyll lose their sovereignity. They "join" adopt to offer negotation and submit to survive, not to be a some sort of business partner. Colonizers doesnt stop colonizing, because youre acting like them. Colonizers will only think twice, if you can offer something interesting than your land-as luckily they still have the opportunity to do that.

There is a difference between withstanding and avoiding colonization. They could never withstood an full scale invasion if the European powers really wanted to. Especially being surrounded by 2 to 3 European superpowers that could hit them from all sides and they have no allies as their neighbors all hate them so one will come to their aid. The European already got all the neighboring countries do they really need to take over every single damn country in the world. They avoiding it but making major concessions to the Brits the French. Like giving Laos to the French. That tis almost like losing before even fighting. If you were really a bad ass you will tell them to go home packing and how dare they even make threats to you. Yo don't negotiate and make deals with enemies who shouldn't even be there in the first place. The Thai people and country likes to brag they were never taken over. They don't tell you how they have to bend over and ass kissing to avoid being taken over. Same thing with the Japanese during WW2 to avoid being taken over by the Japanese. Guess you can say they were smart to avoid suffering a great loss of life and destruction from wars. They got lucky there were a buffer between two superpowers. If that wasn't the case they would have surely been taken over for sure. If the White man says I can said my ships anywhere I want in your waters and there a damn thing you can do about it then you are their b whether or not you admit it. Avoid a war be becoming more like your enemy and joining them. The Siamese became more European. The European didn't become more Siamese. They have already won when you have to be come more like them. Not saying it was a bad thing as it modernized Thailand however it should be a choice not by necessity. I will give it to them at least the leadership knew it couldn't[ withstand the European powers so they did the most prudent thing and that is to avoid a massacre. They try to be on the good grace of the European superpowers they did what they thought was best for them at the time.

Thank you for making a video about Thai history. By the way, there are many points that you should add in the video. 1. The Modernization process of Siam began duing the reign of King Rama IV or King Mongkut, King Chulalongkorn's father. During his monkhood, he learned English and many Western Knowledge from American missionary, so he learned that the world geopolitics was changed and Siam had to adapt to survive. After he became King, he began the modernization in Siam by many ways, such as adapting some Western styles, hiring foreigners to teach his children, including King Chulalongkorn, English and other modern knowledge, and sending students to study aboard. The process was continued by King Chulalongkorn. 2. Another factor was the Russo - Siamese alliance. King Chulalongkorn and Tsar Nicholas II were close friend and their alliance was another factor to make Siam survived. 3. In the Reign of King Rama IV, Siam signed the Bowring Treaty with the British. This treaty took Siam to the modern global trade and economy. The name of the Treaty was taken from Sir John Bowring, the Governor of Hong Kong who was the British representative in the signing of the Treaty.

If the British or French wanted to invade to this country, they will have the conflict with their neighbors countries in Europe.

You mean, Thailand is what used to be territory of the Khmer(Cambodia) empire. Modern day Thai were once mostly Khmer. This is why Thai language are almost identical to Khmer. When Siam invaded Khmer, the people and territory became part of Siam. Ancient temples in Thailand were built by Khmer, not by Siam. Cambodian can read the writing on their temples. Can Thai read the writing on their temple? I doubt it. To make my common short, Thailand and Cambodia should be brothers of peace and love, not sworn enemies as it has proven throughout history. Cambodia is struggling to fight 2 foes of the east(Vietnam) and west(Thailand) who always wait for an opportunity to take more territory from Cambodia. South Vietnam was also part of Khmer(Cambodia) territory until 1949 when the French signed away that territory to Vietnam. Vietnam ambition is to take the remaining land of Cambodia through various deceptive political manuveur means, if it can't take by military forces. Vietnam has already conquered Laos, covertly. If and when Cambodia become part of Vietnam, Thailand is not safe from Vietnam's ambition. So Thailand, you will meet your match when that time come. Cambodia won't be the nation you will be fighting, it's Vietnam that you'll be fight with. As for now, it would be wise for Thailand and Cambodia to be very close tie economically and militarily for ones national interest.

It’s ironic that the movie 'The King and I' was banned in Thailand, not because of the story, but because it failed to show how progressive the country was. This was illustrated in a scene where the King was using chop-sticks to eat his meal. He was appalled that people should think that he was so backwards that he didn’t use a knife, fork and spoon. This aspect was totally lost in this film.

The final map in the end of the video isn’t correct. Siam loses more territories, one is the east (Seam reap, Battambang and Sisophon in Cambodia nowadays.) to French Indo-China and the another in the south (Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu in Malaysia) to British Malaya. Actually, the territories those Siam losses isn’t the part of the Siam Kingdom. They are just the colonies of Siam and they also have their own king or leader. And in this situation, Siam forced Chiangmai and Pattanee to get the annexation to become part of The Kingdom of Siam and transform to Kingdom of Thailand as you see as in the current map.

Yes, King Rama 9 (King Bhumibol) was the Grandson of King Chulalongkorn but I think one of the most important thing it was about education. He decided to send many of his children to study in Europe such as UK, France, Germany or Russia and also USA to let his children learn about what do the european like or think or even the mentality or I can say that to learn the strengths & weaknesses of those countries and in the same time to bulid up the relationship with them because since many of Thai princes were studied in their countries and many of them used to enter into European Military Services. So that's why we have never been colonized by the European since our Princes educated from European countries.

Something huge not mentioned in the video: Southeast Asian wars were often fought to gain people, not land. Kingdoms often had more farm land than farm workers, so wars were waged in which conquered people would be brought back to work the land, and the newly conquered land abandoned. So when France demanded Laos be given to Indochina, the French (westerners who thought in terms of territory) didn't realize or care that Siam (who thought in term of population) moved as many Lao people as they could onto Siamese territory. That's the primary reason why today there are approximately 3.5 million Lao people in Laos, but over 22 million Lao people in Thailand, where they are known as Isaan people.

Read the fine print on the test and you’ll almost certainly find something like “for entertainment purposes” stated. "Ethnic blood” doesn’t exist. Nor do (insert country) spesific DNA. Set a side isolated and somewhat inbreeded small populations there is no such thing as a pure ethnic or geographical group either.

One of the Siamese princes was a very well-known character on the European car racing scene, Prince Birabongse, known as "Bira". Part of the royal family of Siam, he was educated at Eton, and lived until 1985. He drove in European Formula 1 races before WW2. You could say that Siam was part of the European imperial powers such was their influence in Europe !

Prince Bira raced both at Brooklands and at Goodwood: I remember, I saw him and he was very popular. What happened to him, where did he retire to? As for his Country, not so good: an ally of that beast among hostile nations of WW2 :Japan: but for some strange reason she got off lightly at the end of the WW2 conflict. Losing against France on some border differences, the Nippons came along as « tourists » in French Indo-China, then made the French reverse the signed surrender agreements between Siam and France. Admittedly France was in no great situation to argue, but it was under Vichy control and allied to Germany and eventually through Germany to Japan, but they were unwitting « innocents » and in the Nippon racist mind-set just Europeans deserving to be humiliated. Horrible story, Vichy should have known better but were quite stupid sending off a naval task force to « defend French South Sea Islands against Australia (!) whose RAN met them and told them to piss off back whence they came to look after their own people against the Nippons….But the Japs just did their terrible worst…and no-one could help them.

When pronouncing most transliterated Thai words, pronounce them with a UK accent to make them sound closer to the way they sound in Thai. This is true because the transliteration was mainly done by the Brits. If you see a name ending in korn or porn they are pronounced kawn and pawn as a Brit would say them. Words transliterated with an ending r like lard nar is pronounced lawd naw (laht nah) the r’s in this case aren’t pronounced but make the preceding vowel sound longer.

I do respect them for maintaining their independence, however I still find it hard to forgive them for conquering and annexing Pattani, a sovereign Malay kingdom that in an alternate reality would have joined the nation of Malaysia in independence. Even today many Malay Pattani reminisce and are still nostalgic about their independence from Thailand. In fact if it wasn't for the British my father who came from the state of Perlis in Malaysia would still be a Thai citizen today, since Thailand used to conquer over all the northern Malay states in Malaysia today. So yeah good for Thailand that they maintained independence, but don't think they are just some innocent state in South East Asia. They can be just as imperialistic as the Europeans.

This maybe one of the reasons, Tsesarevich Nicholas II heir apparent had visited Siam in 1891 and later on King Chulalongkorn himself paid a visit to Russia in 1897. King Chulalongkorn’s visit prompted sincere and widespread interest in Siam and Siamese affairs among the Russian public. Newspapers extensively covered the visit, issuing publications about Siam and the Siamese king. For example, Vedomosti (News) of St Petersburg, a leading Russian newspaper wrote in an editorial: “In his person we are greeting not only one of the greatest men of our time, [...] but also a true friend of Russia. The power of this friendship lies in mutual respect, in the feelings of straightforwardness and simplicity common to both peoples (...). Our friendship towards Siam is honest and not hypocritical, which His Majesty the King of Siam can confidently rely upon”.4

In a similar way the Goa a small territory in India was a Portuguese colony..My grandparents always said that the Portuguese were not bad like the British in the rest of the country.. British left india in 1947, but Portuguese left only in the 60s when indian goverment made a strategic surprise attack when all the Portuguese ships were required to be else where in the world at the time...and later there were Portuguese airplanes flying over the territory dropping notes, which was a gesture of apology for not being there to defend the people..even today the Portuguese recognise Goan born people as Portuguese citizens and if they want they can acquire a Portuguese citizenship...But the queen sipped on all the tea she took from us and china and other countries in the region and did nothing for our benefit..it was purely for her own greed.

I lived near Chonburi for about 6 months, just SE of Bangkok. Thais are incredible, hard working people who are proud of the fact that they were never colonized. They continue to develop and while they still have a lot of poverty related issues, they really have done a good job of making incomes more fair though they still have a ways to go. As do we all.

poverty of the Thai people really You need to look deeper into that detail. Thais they may not have more money. But are they happy? ... In Thailand, we are not a country with a lot of money. But Thai people in the other provinces are happy in their own way. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to stay in that city. If the people of the city were poor and staring at committing crimes Thailand has not much money due to the bad economic situation all over the world. But we wouldn't be as heavy as Kensington Street in Philadelphia.

@@ggsting8708 well, I saw a lot of desperation in the people there. Women throw themselves at Westerners not because they like us necessarily but because they are trying to escape crushing poverty (especially in Isan) and they see no other way out. While I was there for 5 months I had 12 women try to initiate a relationship with me and I did not take any of them up on it. They all wanted money. They didn't know what love is because this is living like a leech, not love. Desperation causes this. I never saw this in Europe (I lived in Sweden for 8 years and have been all over Europe, I speak 4 languages) or in the Americas. One can see this a bit in Mexico but not nearly as much as in Thailand. The reason? Poverty. The reasons that the Thai women gave me: Thai men cheat too much and do not work, taking money from the women. Thai women often would tell me that they assume that I will treat them well because I am not a Thai man. This is poverty, my friend. I wish you well.
