Why Wasn't the Gospel of Thomas Put Into the Bible?

What's up with the Gospel of Thomas? Why is it so popular, and why wasn't it put into the Bible? Was there some sort of conspiracy to suppress the truth?...
Or is there something else to it?

Of course, with the Book of Enoch, at least the version from Ethiopia, there's the quote from it in the Epistle of Jude. That doesn't give the whole book acceptance, but it must be taken into account. Also some Jewish scholars agree with the theme of fallen angels, giants, etc causing the Great Flood in Genesis 6. Eusebius condemns the Gospel of Thomas, but Clement of Rome seems to quote it, especially Log 22, in his Second Epistle (chap 14). The Gospel of Thomas does, however, suffer "guilt by association" the things like the Gospel of Truth and the rest of the Nag Hammadi texts.

One very simple reason. The Orthodox Church has been selling this idea of "eternal life" despite the fact that even in Gospel of John, it is clearly stated that you "have" zoe aionios if you have faith. Zoe aionios is NOT eternal life, but a lifetime of true iiving. This is exactly what the Gospel of Thomas has been telling people. Our Father's kingdom is both inside and outside of you. Yet people don't see it.

Marvin W. Meyer has a book called the secret Teachings of Jesus, Four Gnostic Gospels. He has translated The Secret book of James, The Gospel of Thomas, The Book of Thomas, and the Secret book of John. Another good author about Gnosticism is Elaine Pagels who wrote on the Gospel of Judas.

Great analysis Melissa! I keep hearing many people always talking about the book of Enoch. Have you done a video analysis of it yet? If not, I'd love to see one. One of my used-to-be-favorite KZfaq channels talked about the book of Enoch ALL THE TIME. But I've heard it refuted as heresy with an analysis of the major flaws by several sources. On a different note, it's interesting that people are always so hardcore on the pursuit of knowledge. Ever since "The Garden" the devil has been tricking us humans. He's like oh, there's MORE that you need to know..... And many times we are lured away from our Heavenly Father because of that pursuit of knowledge. I know I was, I was getting way off track but that was when I was lukewarm and didn't know the bible. But Jesus brought me back onto the right path and out of that lukewarmness, which I had no idea that I was in the first place. But I'm so grateful for the Lord's goodness and mercy.😃❤

My Brother in a new age guy and I am no fan at all. When I was young my mother exposed me to many religions and allowed me to make my own mind up on them. My conclusion was that for the most part they are all the same (apart from Islamic one that has many contradictions and rewards bad actions and even says its ok to lie to non believers) so I cant stand that one. The others I sum up be good to yourself and others many even have the same savior who dies on a cross and comes back to life 3 days later (Horus of the Egyption gods to name one) I have never understood a god that would need me to to attend a service its a bit like a youtuber begging for likes. I live my day with one main rule be better than the day before with love for all things, and to help others when i can. This has always led to never have to stress when things went wrong like car breaks down but its right outside of a mechanic who not only fixed it he did it for free or place i was renting sold only to have a better and cheaper option open up. why cant this just be enough? you wrote "it's interesting that people are always so hardcore on the pursuit of knowledge" yet why is it ok to be so hardcore on the pursuit of faith. is there not in many faiths a dont judge others? I ask because I want to understand. but in my search to understand am i not then seeking knowledge? I realize you post is 2 years old and you may never even notice my reply and it will be what it will be. Though even though i have never met you or know you I truly wish your life to be a wonderful one and will love you and the other s that have posted here all the same.

This was great Melissa! I feel like sharing this with a couple of friends who keep throwing this classic rebuke of the Bible at me at even the SUGGESTION that I'm considering that the Bible/the Jesus of the Bible/and God, could be THE truth. The more I learn about the Bible the more I see how little we non believers (though I don't actually put myself into < this category anymore, I am not a Christian, yet,) actually know and yet feel we can give an 'educated,' opinion on because we've rode the wave of hearing some stuff and regurgitating it like it's truth. (I shake my head how I even partook in that now. It's so..well..dumb, really?! :/ ) Liked the crab meat analogy (lol) And TBH, whomever wrote the 'Gospel of Thomas,' sounds they were trippin ballz!

One nice thing about the 1st Book of Enoch is that it is quoted in scripture in Jude, as well as given as context in several parts of the canonized text (However, I would steer clear of Books 2 and 3 as they are Kabbalah/Jewish Mysticism writings(doctrines of demons) likely brought in to "muddy the waters" and ensure Believers avoid reading an extrabiblical text of merit suck as the book of Enoch. Very unfortunate.) I was raised being taught that any text outside of the canonized scripture was "the devil" and as such it took me a a lot of prayer, research, reading of scripture and waiting on the Lord to confirm the book of Enoch. Fragments of the book were found in the dead sea scrolls yes, but probably what affirmed it all for me was a Holy Spirit inspired writer quoted directly from Enoch and the HS does not make mistakes.
@kittymccaffery
@kittymccaffery 5 жыл бұрын
White Filly a lot of Christians argue that Jude quoted the book of Enoch too. There is nothing in the sacred text that identifies the actual origin of Jude’s quotation. Enoch’s original message was from God. It is entirely possible that the prophet Enoch may have been quoted directly by Jude, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit-since the prophecy is not contained in the Old Testament. This is not without precedent in Scripture. Paul once quoted the Lord Jesus, though the quotation he employed is nowhere recorded in the Gospel narratives; cf. Acts 20:35.) “No one can prove, therefore, that Jude’s text was taken from the “Book of Enoch.” Further, it is likely that the quotation in the Book of Enoch reflects the echo of an ancient tradition that has its roots in the events of the Patriarchal period and that the inspiration of Jude, and the tradition of the Book of Enoch, merely merge at this juncture. Even if Jude had quoted from the Book of Enoch that would not establish the inspiration of the latter work. Paul quoted from several Greek writers, e.g., Aratus (Acts 17:28), Menander (1 Cor. 15:33), and Epimenides (Tit. 1:12), yet no one contends that the apostle’s use of these quotes endowed the original classical works with the aura of divine inspiration. Furthermore, the ad hominem use of a quotation from an uninspired source does not negate the inspiration of the one who uses it - if there is evidence otherwise that establishes the sacred character of the message he is presenting. The argument just cited relative to Paul’s citations from the classics equally establishes this truth.” I’d share link but it would probably go to spam.

@@kittymccaffery thank you. Can I ask where you learned this. I really love this explanation and it solidifies my initial feelings(I know we do not ever trust those and must test them and ensure they are biblically based) I may have heard a sermon many years ago or read something in the bible that referred to Gods word living forever etc. Anyways it always rubbed my understanding of that the wrong way. I was always in the mindset that My God is able to preserve His word and that it is forever and never fades away. I guess I always saw it that if these extra biblical books are scripture too that would mean God is a liar and is unable to preserve his word for us.

There was another writing,called: the DIDACHE (didd-uh-KAY). It was supposedly the Teachings of the 12 Apostles, but I don't think anyone knows who wrote it. It wasn't included. Maybe it shouldn't have been and it was right to leave it out. But what was the reason? I have also heard of things such as: The Secret Gospel of Mark, the Gospel of Peter, the Shepherd of Hermas and...wasn't there an "Epistle of Barnabus?" There may have been good reason for not including these. What were they? When or how late were these things written? The problem with most of these books that weren't included is: they were simply written too late after the Apostles died. If Jesus died in 33AD then what books or epistles were considered inspired in 58AD? That would have been 25 yrs. after Jesus's death. But alot of the "missing stuff" people talk about was written quite a bit later. and many of the other writings have odd or different doctrines. All of that said, I have a question: In JOHN's Gospel, the 1st chapter, doesn't it talk about the LOGOS? or isn't the word translated AS "word" sometimes also translated Logos? or, it comes from the word Logos? Someone help me out here. But my question is: Does anyone know if the LOGOS is a Gnostic word? I don't know.

I would have to disagree with one point. In the second letter to the Corinthians from the Romans (some scholars attribute this letter to Clement but aren't sure) he references this set of texts quite a few time in his attempt to appeal to this church to keep in step with living in holiness. So with that being said, it was well known to the writer and also had to have been familiar to the church receiving the letter.

Thank you for making this video. Good job summarizing everything. It was funny when you got out of the chair and walked off camera. The people that are attracted to "The Gospel of Thomas" can be summed up in John 3:19-21. They are attracted to darkness! John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

Shalom sister thank you, I really appreciate your opinion, but why in the church rarely discusses like this, does this seem unimportant?? God bless..

I grew up a Christian, and I basically knew all the stories in the Bible by the time I was about 9 to 10 years old. I respect everybody’s opinions regarding their own beliefs systems however, after much research, and I’m talking almost 10 years now of research, I have learned that the Bible was comprised by the King for no other reason other than control. It’s well documented that the king comprised specific books in the Bible to feed his narrative for fear and control. That’s not to say these books aren’t true I’m just merely pointing out that the king chose specific books in order to be able to control the masses and produce fear, I also have an issue with the person who authored the book and by book I mean the Bible, King James wrote the Bible however, prior to writing the Bible. He also wrote a book on demonology and witchcraft , YES! You heard me correctly the same person that wrote the Bible is the same person who wrote a book, detailing his belief in witches and witchcraft, and all that it entails. I’m not saying that it makes him a bad person, but I have a hard time trusting a person who holds a double standard. How can you believe in witchcraft but also believe in Jesus Christ. I’m not saying the gospel of Thomas is true, or that it should be regarded as one of the gospels, but I also think that the Bible has been comprised for specific reasons and its goal was to gain control over the masses, and people have use it for fear and control for decades. Plus, it’s a widely known fact that you shouldn’t trust anything that the government pushes why? Because you should always question your government, because all they do is LIE. Now, I’m not saying that Jesus Christ is not real! I fully believe in a higher power, divine, God, whatever you wanna call it. However, I think that plenty of people have plenty of reasons to twist certain books to fit their narrative, and that the Bible should be used as a history book instead of a book for divine worship. The Whole Christian Community has pushed the narrative that in order to be a good Christian, you have to attend church whenever possible. Read your Bible and well you all can pretty much guess what I’m gonna say now, I’m not knocking that way of life but I do not believe that you need a church in order to worship your God once again, the church was developed to control the masses. A lot, and I stress a lot not all pastors, priests, etc are some of the most crooked people I know. In fact, within the church lies so many pedophiles, who use the trust that they are given as leaders in their community to do despicable things to children. With that being said, in terms of Christianity, I feel like the devil infiltrated it long ago, and twisted it to his own desires.

I read it too, and I agree very much with what you say. I can clearly see why it never was part of the Bible. Absolutely no context.

Oh my gosh I'm so glad you talked on this just had a theological debate with a gnostic and everything screamed new age blasphemy. I then began researching and it is opposed to scripture plus in the end Jesus is sent to save, this doesn't change. Second any testimony of a person who has experience d near death (myself included suicide survivor) or experienced life change is always testified by Jesus Christ saving them and their love and passion for the bible that came afterwards.

I enjoy reading writings from the time of the early church. And yes, I have read the gospel of Thomas. The gospel itself is very strong argument against it belonging to the canon. It just does not fit!

Wow, wow. Thank you for this video, I had no idea that is book existed. It sounds so very weird and like it wasn't really from someone who knew Jesus, it sounds like it was written by someone much later in life that had some agenda or was just messing around. It's very weird. And yes, some of that made me feel a little like you did..im probably used to hearing weird stuff like that (not that I agree with the weird not good stuff)..I definitely understand and agree on what you said about it and feel the same way as you do.

Have you ever thought of trying LED lighting? Not only does it last forever, but it'll save on your electricity bill. People will say that it's expensive, but it pays for itself, so in the long run it's cheaper than regular lighting.

Some of the attributes of the Gospel of Thomas does have kind of parallels with Koans in Zen practice, and someone with a study of zen ‘might’ see these parallels and assume these are loans from Jesus, but a lot of them are so obscure and have either been incorrectly translated - after all, a translator would try to make sense rather than keep a deliberately nonsensical statement. So there’s that. If these were koans, they would be deliberately nonsensical and unless you knew that, a translator would make a sane transliteration which would kill the sense of the koan.
