I’m so sorry, Becky. I’ve been homeschooling for 20 years and I’ve heard soooooo many terrible co-op stories, my own and several friends from everywhere (not just my state). Women can be so very hateful, and when they get into their cliques with equally harsh women, watch out. The very saddest thing of all is that most of the time they call themselves Christians, and that is really damaging to the impressionable kids who are watching all of it. It’s hard enough for us to get through it, but it is devastating when our kids think that this is how Christians behave.

We homeschool and I don't ever plan to co-op. I can handle things myself and my kids still play with other kids at the library, park, and local kids museum. Many kids they play with are homeschooled too. We like to chat at these events but I'd never want to like teach with them. I'll do my own thing. This lady also seems like she can handle things for herself ❤️.

Thanks for sharing! We have tried 3 different co-ops through the past 10 years, one enrichment one 2 two academic ones. I thought we “had” to belong to a co-op because it’s “the right thing to do.” Meanwhile, my kids were unhappy and I wasn’t enjoying it either. I have come to the realization that we are not a co-op family and it is OK 😁. The straw that broke our family’s camel back was how much my 10 year old daughter loved art so I signed her up for an art class. That particular teacher was awful. My daughter came out of class crying and I just lost it. Long story short, I had spoken with that teacher and she told me that my daughter only wanted to be in class to socialize and maybe her expectations were too high for my daughter. I was blown away. My daughter does not enjoy art anymore and her creativity was destroyed. She doesn’t like to watercolor or draw or anything anymore. I was so hurt for her. Leadership didn’t handle it very well because, in my opinion, this art teacher was so good as an art teacher (she really is quite talented) and they didn’t want to upset her. AND this was a Christian co-op. It was an expensive co-op as well. As a family, we decided that it’s just not our thing and it’s ok 😬. At the end we all must do what is best for our own family and regardless of what we choose, we are right ☺️

So glad you feel confident with your decision and that your kids have a mama who will help them explore the world anyway! You’re so right, it’s not a necessary aspect of homeschool. There are so many creative ways to enrich their learning. 💜

I'm from an area with a lot of coop options. I've tried 2. At 1 I just didn't click with the mom's and my kids didn't click with their kids. Then I tried the second one and the mom's we're so nice and their kids were sweet, freindly, n inviting. We quit the 1st & stayed with the 2nd, & weve loved it. The way they are both set up & their purposes are completely different, therefore leadership is too. Leadership attitude trickles down to the other women SO leadership is key. The ones at mine aren't perfect yet their hearts are genuine and care about others so it really sets the tone. It's not the biggest around, nor provides the BEST of everything, but the friendships n kindness we've found is priceless. I always pray other moms find the same 🙂

We had a co-op we loved!! It was a drop off - zero parent involvement for the most part. It was a Christ-centered co-op and I knew the teachers so I can say this - I didn't care what the subject was. I would let him pick his classes for the next year. It was 5 hours of respite for me and he loved it. It was fun classes like cake decorating, geography, PE, woodshop, lego design, Magic Tree House, etc. I didn't even count it as a day towards our school though I could have. They offered "real" classes as well such as science, 5 in a row, reading, literature, history, etc. however, my son always chose the fun classes. We have a great curriculum at home that covered the main topics. This was social and fun times for my son. This semester we sat out due to financial issues, and he might be aging out of the "fun" things at 12. Honestly, I don't think I would do a co-op that was parent led. If I am teaching, I'm fine with just teaching my own. We are active at church, sports, trail life, etc for the social aspect of life.

My oldest is an extrovert and loves it. I have really enjoyed this last half of the semester being cancelled. We have our Fridays back. But I'm still on the fence. We have been a part of our homeschool co-op for three years and it has been a wonderful experience for our family! It gets us out of the house every week for an afternoon, which is great for all of us! It gives the kids an opportunity to learn from someone other than myself. They have classes that we simply could not do at home like gym class, dance class, recorder class, flag football, drama class, etc. besides the academic options. The kids are learning how to make friends and deal with all different kinds of personalities. They offer monthy field trips, Mom's Night Out, dances and more. I've never had an issue with the leadership. We love, love, love it so much!

You might want to look at Meet Up. I found an amazing group there. We do one educational thing on Wednesday (museum, play, factory tour, art class, book club, etc...) and one social thing on Friday (normally a park or a trampoline place if the weather is bad). Everything is optional. We only pay for things that cost money. We get the school rate for most things. One example is a Christmas play that normally cost $150, we got for under $20. The group its self is free. It doesn't affect curriculum choices because everything we do in the group, I consider extra. I meet some amazing, supportive moms there. My daughter also has great, supportive friends. She isn't missing out on the fun things about school. She still gets a Valentine party for example.

@@theunlikelyhomeschooler7352 Agreed. I did a co-op starting when my oldest was 4 and continued until she was 5. It was too much. There are great things to learn at this age that don't require a lot of structure. It's a tremendously fun age, and you should use this time to bond and encourage your personal teaching relationship with your kindergartner. Teaching the joy of learning is so valuable. This is a very ripe age for that.

Thank you for addressing this issue! This video was very helpful to me this morning ;-) I was actually thinking about joining a co-op this year since my youngest will be in K and my oldest 2nd grade and I would have liked them to be together. But, COVID-19 happened, which has forced my husband is applying to other jobs, and a forceable move might be happening this summer. So, I already knew a co-op was probably out of the question! But, hearing from other homeschool moms, they always end up leaving and it’s the cycle of back and forth or joining others. So, I don’t know. To me, it seems to be better to invest in classes (experiences) outside the home or join other kids through church, library, classes, etc..than be bound to a co-op for an entire year!🤷‍♀️ So, I fee you made the best decision!

@saral7370
@saral7370 4 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry to hear that about your co-op! Our co-op isn't like that and ours is also Christian based. Most of the parents are amazing! Our board members take it seriously and all 6 of them are sweet and so smart especially through this ordeal! It's a well oiled machine. This is our 4th year at this co-op, our daughter is 9 now so we've only been to this one. Our co-op has been around for a really long time. There's a parent who was my daughter's teacher last year and she went to the same co-op when she was little! We did have a bad experience this year when one of her teacher's really didn't do what she needed to do to teach, it was Botany class. She was tardy and really didn't teach much in class. I was doing all the teaching at home so in January we dropped that class and had to start going to study hall because we still had a class after that to go to. I was then considered a "rover" and they would put me wherever they needed me. They don't make you pay for tuition after you stop, you just don't get reimbursed for what you've already paid. The other bad experience we've had is bad behavior from other kids and lack of discipline. Right now I'm still able to facilitate (Teacher's assistant) all of my daughter's classes due to some health issues she has so I can really see how the teachers are. We just filled out our registration for next year this month. One of the classes is American Girl doll history, my daughter is stoked about that one. But not much being offered next year but I think there's still going to be a full day for us. There are a couple I'm not sure about but signed up anyways to check them out. This year we've really gotten to know some families who are so amazing. There are 5 periods total for the one day a week but you don't have to go to all of them. I really like how they don't push the Christianity at ours even though they are Christian based. I know of a couple of other ones where they have messages every week you have to attend. Even if you aren't Christian you're still welcome, but if you want to teach classes you do have to be a member of a church. Sorry I wrote a book! 😉

This year we finally found a Catholic co-op in our area. I was so excited and my kids hit it off with the other children in the group. I also enjoy talking with the moms and teaching a class myself. We were so disappointed when it ended because of this virus. Now they're talking about scheduling classes for the fall, which we have to sign up for now. I too am concerned that the virus will come back in the fall. We have to prep all of our classes ahead of time, which is a lot of work on my end. I'm concerned if I plan all those classes and it gets canceled again or someone in our family get sick with a virus, it will all be a waste of time. We are all really stuck in a hard spot.

We live in a rural area with extremely limited Co Op options. Like 2. When our kids were little, a few moms got together and started our own co op. No money required, full parent participation. Lots of play and tight mommy friendships. It dissolved when 2 families moved. Then, we found a more structured Co Op. Little financial investment, full participation required, enrichment classes only. Loved this group for 5 years. We will miss them terribly next year. We recently registered with a new even more structured Co Op with classes that will count for our curriculum, homework, etc. Now that my kids are older, I'm looking for more structure, curriculum replacements and more opportunity. (This Co Op is much larger) For the last 7 years, Co Op has been a day in the week that we ALL look forward to. If that wasn't the case, I can't imagine sacrificing my time, money and energy when this option is up to me. For all homeschool mamas...this is a season. This may be a season for Co Op or it may not. This may be a season for a different Co Op. Change is hard. I can't comment on having an issue with leadership because I haven't personally run into that. Trust your instinct mamas, you are usually right. ;) No group is perfect, but when you know...you know. Prayers and peaceful decisions for all homeschool mamas.

I've been homeschooling for 26 years. We have never had many options in our area. Co-ops come and go. The first one we tried to join would not allow us to participate (after we joined) because I babysat a 2yo child. I, of course, was willing to pay his fees, and I offered to do childcare at each co-op meeting. There was a strict rule against children not in your family. I totally understood that, so we didn't go to the once a month classes, but we also could not get a refund. There were evening activities such as drama, music lessons, and field trips, which I thought we could utilize. It was allowed, but sign ups were at the co-op meetings where we were not allowed. By the time we received our newsletter every single slot for all those activities were filled. We were told we were welcome to join the beginning of the year family picnic and the end of the year family picnic. We tried one more co-op years later, but it fizzled out before it began. I stopped trying long ago. I just work hard to keep my daughter, only one left at home now, active with community activities, with friends, and through church.

That's awful! I'm sorry you had to deal with that! You're right though, there are so many social activities that kids can do that don't require a co-op.

I'm thinking about starting my own co-op. I would never even say I was a "leader". That implies that the people who come to the co-op are followers. It's ridiculous how one word can pivot the mentality of the group. My best experience was in San Jose California. It is secular and run by a Christian CEO who uses other churches for the classes. There was break dancing, tai kwon do, legos, video production, chess, music and games with math. It was insane great. The next year we moved and went to an all Christian one. The authoritarian structure and the rules upon rules upon rules really set the environment for uppity women to display how snobby they can be. It is sad.

I really never pay any attention to enroll my kid in a co-op , he socialize very well. I just think that no matter if is a christian co-op there’s always something that I might not agree with, plus it does kind of make me feel as if he will be again in public school,just because of the fact that there’s somebody else teaching him and that sometimes you sign because you see something you might like they are teaching but the way they are instructing the kids is not the way you think should be. Not sure if I am explaining my self well. But all this time I have being homeschooling I have never put my kid into a co-op. I think for a single mom like me is kind of difficult to pay for so much fees. I can see a benefit from it if is a class I have difficulty to teach, but besides that I don’t think I would enroll in a co-op . Don’t know what will happen a couple of years from now If I will change my mind and try. I really enjoy the information, and see somebody else’s opinion about it . Thanks for sharing .🤗

We hardly have any options where we are much less one that would work with young children as you are required to be involved every week including teaching a class or a semester. I had a 1 and 4 year old, now 2 and 5 year old and couldn’t do the parental involvement portion that was required with two non-coop students. (Teaching or assistant teaching). Very unfriendly to Mom’s of littles without babysitters at home.

Ugh! I hate that! I have an 11yo and a 1 and 3yo, so I have had the same problem. I feel so bad for my oldest because we've had to give up several classes, not just co-op, for the same reason. It's like people forget that you can have big kids AND toddlers at the same time.

We tried a co-op, I know refer to it as a "no thanks". Too much drama and judgement. Much rather just do the homeschool get together group, plus it is way cheaper. I bet there are many great co-ops out there, but it's just not for us. Great video Becky, keep them coming!

I'm currently in a co-op that I'm neutral about. There's definitely micro managing going on and typical "too many chiefs" mentality. But I'm actually looking into creating my own co-op, but keeping it super small! This way you get the best of both worlds and it doesn't cost a fortune!

I had briefly thought about looking into a co-op, not for subject matter, but for new people to meet. Our church right now (before pandemic) has a really small youth group. All the kids basically get along, but everyone else is involved in stuff, so there's no opportunity for "getting together". We have a lot of friends in our neighborhood, but my kids don't know anyone else that they can just get together with that is a homeschooled kid. Without having to drive too much there are two in our area. One I've heard is high school drama (so we're not interested in that) and the other is more scholastic and it's somehow run by this educational group. I've heard the running of it is great, but it's not really what I am looking for. I really just would like to have my kids know some like-minded kids that live relatively close by. We have good kids in our neighborhood, for which I am thankful, so I should just be thankful.

It definitely takes work to find the right group for our kids to hang out with, doesn't? Yes, it's a blessing to have neighborhood kids because in our neighborhood, there aren't really any kids. I think what I'll miss the most about co-op is my youngest having opportunities to do little plays and things with her classmates. I got to enjoy my oldest doing those when she was in public school and without a co-op, I won't really have those anymore with my youngest.

Do you have a local play house in your area? We have one and they put on three or four plays a year. We've never been, but I have heard that people that do go think they're pretty good.

This was very interesting to listen to. So I am an unexpected home schooler due to the current state of the world. Right now my kids are getting set assignments via google classroom and you tube. Mine are in grades K,2 and 6. I am looking to make the switch to home schooling for next school year because I am not willing to send my kids back into a situation that is so uncertain. Can you give me any places to start to figure this all out? I have watched a few videos now but I feel overwhelmed trying to figure out what I am supposed to teach them. We live in the Northeast and are fully sheltering in place and will continue to do so after the state reopens. Any direction would be so helpful. Thank you so much and stay safe and healthy!

I know how overwhelming it can be to start homeschooling! The first thing to do, if you haven't already, is find out how to pull them out of public school and what is required of homeschoolers. Some states require that you submit work samples to them, attendance, testing, etc. Once you know what your state requires, it's easier to start planning curriculum. I highly recommend the book "Home Learning Year-by-Year." It has been a life-saver for me over the years.

A Place to Nest I thought that might be the case - that you had reason to believe it would be better than the first time. That’s too bad that years later, problems were still there. We’ve homeschooled over 13 years now and have mostly stayed away from co-ops, and we’ve done just fine. I’ve unfortunately just heard too many stories like yours.

I probably will never sign up for a co-op. I’m pretty sure I’d get annoyed and would feel obligated to complete a semester. What I want is something I can drop off for. Thankfully in our city we have a homeschool language arts enrichment program that I signed my oldest up for. It’s like private school but better for Language arts and exclusively for homeschoolers. Classes are during the day 😅 Id rather pay for drop off enrichment classes than volunteer at a co-op. 😂

Yes, if you don't complete the year they get mad because they base tuition off the people that have said they will attend for a full year. In our area, there are very few co-ops that don't have a fee AND parent involvement. I'm glad you have a program where you can drop off and not be obligated to stay and help. : )
