That's it. There is no debate, only the unremitting truth.
Painted mechs look better, and even fight better.
If you're still here after, you can rest assured that future videos will become informative and helpful. No more e-drama videos, I promise.
Next in line is how to operate Megamek, followed by the ways to play the classic battletech game in detail in every step of the turn.
0:00 - It begins
0:51 - Cope #1: this kind of elitism chases away players (wrong)
3:14 - Cope #2: it's too hard to paint 'mechs, I'm not good enough (unfair)
5:58 - Cope #3: that's just too much time and effort (it's really not)
9:09 - Cope #4: it's ableist to tell people to play with painted 'mechs (false)
10:59 - Cope #5: it's not 40k, so there's no need to paint, stop forcing (weak)
14:00 - Cope #6: are you going to paint them for me? Pay me! (usurious)
15:44 - Cope #7: [we are experiencing technical difficulties, pleases stand by]
21:03 - Whence cometh this psychotic stream of consciousness?
21:08 - Look, I'm just... it really gets to me, ok?
21:13 - Don't let it get under your skin. It's just internet drama.
21:18 - Am I wrong though, dad?
21:23 - [sigh] no, you're not wrong. You just might lose some fans with this.

The other thing with Battletech is that unlike Warhammer 40K, you aren't forced to paint huge units of infantry. Painting up a couple lances or stars of Battlemechs to an extremely high standard is very, very doable. I mean blocking in and edge highlighting, not dry-brushing or washing. These just aren't big units, you can afford to really take your time and concentrate on one 'mech at a time and get them to the highest quality you're capable of. It ain't like Warhammer 40K where you've got legions of unpainted infantry laying around that have to be cut out of sprues, cleaned up, glued together, and put on bases. This stuff comes from Catalyst fully assembled on a hex base, and it comes in manageable little 4-5 model packs.

@MadmanMcNabb
@MadmanMcNabb Жыл бұрын
@@horsemumbler1 For weathering and grime, sure, you can use a wash. But if you want a really clean, vibrant look, you avoid washes, base-coat with a dark color, block in the primary tone, then edge-highlight/blend until you've got something that really pops. Washes would muddy that style up too much.

Very based. Coming from other wargames and stuff though I’d kill for some multipart mech things, like imagine a system where you could get your mech chassis with detached weapons that could glue on normally, or swap out using a big ol pack of weapons you could buy separate. I guess it would decrease the skill to create your favorite variants and stuff but I think it would be really cool for the tabletop

Oh, poor simple Hellkite... You didn't get the memo, did you? It's not about the hobby! It's not about playing the game, or painting, or collecting, or discussing lore... It's about *the community!* They just need to criticize the old hobbyists, who... ya know... do the hobby, until their presence is so intolerable, so odious, that everyone else leaves. Then, once they've achieved a vocal enough minority to seem like a majority, they can enact changes that will ruin the game and bury it. Then it's off to the next hobby! Your locust comparison is apt!

11:00 I use Liquitex craft paints. You can get 48 different shades in a set for $33. If you're a real gigachad just get the big tubes of all the primary colors and mix your shades by hand. Get a set of Liquitex inks for washes and a set of Vallejo metalics. That's plenty enough to make your minis look great. Get some high gloss varnish to make your energy weapons and cockpits really pop, and some matte varnish for sealing if you want your paint jobs to last longer.

Let me say this, I don't hate folks who don't paint their mechs or those who do paint them. I prefer to see painted machines, but I myself don't have any. Still working out the demons that I deal with on a daily bases where I feel that if I try to paint them I'll ruin them. So slowly but surely I've been working up the courage to get some paint on plastic, right at the moment I'm using a bunch of old Space Marines from GW that have been sitting around and I don't have any use for them other than to test out some color pallets. Like I said I haven't painted my mechs only due to a nagging fear in the back of my head, and I am working on it. Just the other day I painted up a brown camo marine, and am eager to use my next painting session to try it out on one of my many Warhammers (got 2 from the Battle Box, 1 from Alpha Strike, 2 from don't know were, and the 7s version from the highlanders)….side note I have plans for many of those Hammers (going to be making a C3 and a 6D variant out of 2 of them). As for the mechs that I don't care for the looks of I will try and find some folks to trade with for machines that I do want (hate the exclusive issue, makes it hard to get a couple for lance builds). As for why I'm in the hobby? I love the minis, and mechs are just so darn cool. Wish I could get some 15mm versions though.
@horsemumbler1
@horsemumbler1 Жыл бұрын
You can't ruin a mini with paint. If you want to try a different paint job you can just wipe it off and try something. A basic base coat with a little line darkening and weathering using washes plus a dab of color on the cockpit is all you really need. You can always get more fancy later if you like.

alright, so coming from someone who has not painted any of my mechs yet. Currently am a new player. I left 40k about maybe 2 or 3 years ago. And I had maybe about 1800pts worth of multiple armies. All painted, custom bases, multiple kit bashes, and more. Coming to Battletech I havent painted because A. Art overall has been really bad for me as of late, dont know why but its just been really unenjoyable at some points and barely entertaining for others. To be completely honest Ive been loving the game purely for the mechanics of the game itself, lore, and overall the community. Do I think at the bare minimum you should slap a sticker or marker on the base in order to avoid confusion? yes, theres a difference between no interest in painting and laziness. On the same note, yea, painted mechs look freaking awesome, and unpainted mechs are still well. Mechs. Thats what makes the game great. If someone has unpainted minis, leave em alone, they got their own reasons to not have them painted, focus on your own stuff and have fun. If youre really curious why they got into battletech, maybe ask them? Because surprisingly, painting is 1 part of the hobby.

@@vurtruvious5280 Then don't think of it as art. Warhammer players all seem treat their minis as artwork, and looking at all the detail of those models it's no surprise. You can go really crazy with hours and hours on fine details with those things, and the work really pays off versus fast and easy efforts. Battletech minis are different. You don't really have to do any "art," to make them look quite good, just prime, base coat, and weather with some washes, maybe a little drybrushing, and dab a little color on the cockpits. Glue some sand and a few little rocks to the base and you're done.

I am puzzled at this drama. I really don't care. I have plenty of painted 'mechs, but also an incredibly deep backlog. I've even had my own (stats, then art and sculpting commissioned) designs created in metal miniatures. If there are multiple grey mechs, I can tell them apart by adding a small smudge of marker on a shoulder pad or such for differentiation purposes. It is the same reason why Battletech 3rd and 4th edition came with cardboard standees instead of miniatures. You could play with any markers you liked as long as you discern front and back facing (In regular Battletech anyway) I've been playing since the mid 90s. And the charges of elitism cut both ways. I'm just happy people want to play. There was a dark time, in the early to mid 00s, when the game was on life support. And I along with some others kept it going as best we could. People who were interested in playing could participate however they liked. Sure I still had my painted minis, but proxies would often abound, and sometimes primed or even metal minis would have to make their way onto the board. It didn't matter. So I'm sorry if someone was giving you a hard time. But I'm going to have to ask you to chill about three notches. You can have a peeve and you can rant if you like. But if you're going to get militant about it. I will have to reluctantly oppose your position as a matter of my own principle as an agnostic in this dispute.

this is a lot to unpack! If I understand you correctly... throw some color onto the gray! doesn't need to be anything special or particular. that said, I am entertained by the number of people that emphasize faction specific paint scheme! I have yet to see any military after the mid-1800s, March into battle wearing their dress-uniform. any modern military uses a terrain appropriate camo. unless your unit is within a major population center or your mech/vehicle is participating in a Solaris VII type event - why are you painting your mini's in 'faction specific' color schemes? this is a war game! in order to minimize your forces being identified on the battlefield, your forces should have a camo pattern, not bright vibrant colors found on the factions flag. all that, and edge highlighting is over rated. I'm done with my rant.
@horsemumbler1
@horsemumbler1 Жыл бұрын
Yes. Units that wear ther parade colors into battle are notably few in Battletech. Almost any sort of camouflage can work with almost any unit from almost any faction, and it's always been normal to simply make your own Merc company and make it look however tickles your fancy. Everything's going to be weathered and worn, so you can do wonders just by being a bit messy and slapdash with your paints and plenty liberal with the washes.

It is canon for just about any particular mech to end up in just about any faction's order of battle. Some designs are far more typical of certain houses because of where the old Mech factories happen to be located, but remember that for most of the timeline everybody's mostly fighting g over the same set of Star League leftovers. Here's my advice for someone who is just getting into Battletech: Get one of each Lance pack, or Star pack depending on if you prefer Clan or IS, or get them all if you're loaded or crazy or a 40k refugees who expects to spends bundles of dollars on a new army every year anyway. Now parcel them out according to faction association(many Merc units are aligned with one house in particular, so you can use house availability to determin availability for non house forces as well as regulars): That catapult is going to the Dracs or Capellans. The Capellans have a fair few neat designs all their own in the Cataphract, Vindicator and Raven. They have a stealth varient of the Stinger. Capellans have always been in a tight spot when it cones to mech production and supply, especially Heavies and Assaults, so rely on imports, particularly trades for their advanced Raven designs. Give your Capellans their faction specific mechs, a Crusader, and whatever is left over when you're done filling out your other forces with the vest stuff. They're chronically short on Assaults, except for Atlases, and highlanders which they can refit. They'll take what they can get and be unhappy about it, because fun if forbidden in Cappella. Fun is for enemies of the state. And you are of course a loyal warrior of house Liao, and enemy of all their enemies, so that includes fun. IMHO, if anyone doesn't have painted minis, the best thing to do is let them play your Cappellan Company, or Demi-Company if you don't like them enough to have a funny company. The Jenner and Spider go to the Dracs, as does the Wasp, the Panther, and a Marauder, and a Gryphon if you have two, or don't give your only one to a Lyran unit. The Draconis Combine was gifted with a lot of Mechs by comstar, so there are a lot of downgraded Kurita versions of mechs you can get in the Comstar Level II packs. The Katana, the Sentinel, the Crab, and thug are all great mechs for a DCMS company. The Hatamoto-Chi and is of course as Drac as it gets, so to with the Dragon. They don't have a lot of mediums in the DCMS, preferring swarms of lights backed by powerful Heavy and Assault mechs. They have their own Atlas Varient, and a nice one at that. Those Blackjacks are Davion, baby, as is the Bushwhaker and the Victor, the NightStar too, probably, and definitely the Enforcer and the Centurion, and the Valkyre. They have plenty of Atlasas. Their house varient is a slight side-grade of the typical design. Steiner can fight Davion for the Axeman and Hatchetman, and can keep the Commando and the Zeus. The Banshee is very Lyran as is the Wolfhound. They have a lot of Gryphons, and use a pair to guard the Throne in Tharkad at all times by long tradition. And of course a Steiner unit wouldn't be a Steiner unit without an Atlas. Your Free World's League force will have a Wolverine, Trebuchet, and an Orion in it at least. They like Cicadas. If you give them an Awesome, Marauder, or Warhammer, they probably won't Have the PPCs to replace yours if you lose them, assuming your mech still has them yet. If you're in the FWL and you pilot one of those three you're probably packing Large Lasers instead of PPCs, or will soon. Give each of your companies an Atlas. The Atlas is the most Iconic unit, anyone who can field one does, and it's the game piece you most want to have to option of adding to any force. It's available in a few different packs, including the Direct Fire Lance and Alpha Strike Box, and Hansen's Rougheiders, iirc. Get multiple of the Direct Fire Lance because the Crusader is the most widely used and most common heavy mech in setting, the Orion is ubiquitous, everyone loves an Atlas and should have one in every serious force. And a Wolf's Dragoons Assault Lance with multiple Marauder IIs is fun. The Dragoons have a lot of fun faction appropriate units. Plainsmen Zhukovs and Bandits, their varient of the Archer, Mad IIs and maybe some Gillotines, a Highlander, an Exterminator perhaps, the sort if LosTech the Wolves would assume to fit in among Sphereoids.

Battletech is a system that went nearly fifteen years without a comparative battle value system, and included the battlemech construction rules in the box set from jump, and salvage was built in from the very start, given the value of the machines and limited production in-universe. If something was left on the field capable of being repaired and sent back into combat, the work was going to be done to do so. It's why every unit across every era of the system are using machines that are 2, 3, and 400 years old- often having never received actual upgrades, but just basic servicing and repair. And it's also why many of the most known characters in the lore run hardware that isn't of their nation or expected from their unit, because it's a heirloom, or better yet- it's something they took from somebody else through force. Also explains why the era field manuals (where the aforementioned rolling charts are) aren't locked down as such- because there isn't a single unit anywhere in any era that is 100% to the tables. Ultimately, Battletech has always been structured, both rules and lore wise, to allow players to field the unit compositions they want, in large part because it lets them be creative with how they intend to operate with them in the field, and work into the campaign and role playing aspects as well, if they so choose.

@Kenneth Ellis you are mostly correct. since the age of war 2314-2398, different leaders have always come up with excuses to wage war. there are only brief moments in the timeline that are mostly peaceful. that said, here's some history and availability. pre- 2450: no battlemechs, only conventional forces. moderate size space fleets. starleague (2550-2786): thr golden age vast armies and space fleets. the SLDF prior to the Amaris coup, had over 4000 regiments and 6000 warships.after the Amaris coup, the SLDF had approx 1000 regiments and over 1000 warships. when you take into consideration that forces on both sides left damaged and broken equipment on the battlefields, that's a lot of equipment. thru the 1st and 2nd succession wars: the 5 houses were very indiscriminate with the use of WMDs. by the end of these two wars, most of the house warships were gone, only a handful remained for each navy. the ground military was reduced to about a quarter of pre-war scale. the 3rd succession war: this was more tactical than strategic. very few worlds changed hands. this went on for nearly 150 years. towards the end, a few distinct things were happening (the 3rd succession war ends 3020). the houses used mercenary forces for the majority of combat operations. since the arrival of the Wolf's Dragoons (3005), the houses were in rebuild mode. the availability of the Helm memory core increased productivity of SLDF tech. the 4th succession war (3028-3039): limited space fleets, massive amounts of ground forces. more worlds changed hands during this 11 years than the previous 250 years. uneasy calm (prior to 3049): the houses entered a tech boom. vast improvements and ramped up production. 3049 The Clans: with their arrival, everything changes. all kinds of tech and return of warships. this encourages the house to produce not only more ground forces, but invest in the space fleet as well. Tukyyid: Comstar sent 75 Divisions and left with more than 25 while the clans arrived with 25 galaxies and left with less than 5. most of the damaged and even destroyed wreckage was taken by Comstar. 3055 and beyond: war is in full swing! units are plentiful and space fleets are growing in size, especially with new designs. the only era that has the "Mad Max" dystopia future is the 3rd succession war. all other era's have sufficient military capacity to field large armies.

The only games out there they have rules on painted minis and say you can play with unpainted units is GW. And that is for the tournaments. As for BattleTech you can show up with paper craft mechs, standies, the unit name on a small paper square. And if you have minis painted or not you're fine. Now if you show up with unseen Ral Partha pewter miniatures...unpainted. Also we need to bring back BattleTroops.

If you're not painting the minis, you're not really in the hobby, let's be honest. If you're totally new and you've just got aGoAC and maybe a lance pack or two and have never played before and want to try a match or two and get some advice and inspiriation at your local game store or with a friend before you decide upon and commit to to look of your first force... come right in and be welcome. We'll just say you're the OpFor in a sim or something and have some easy practice games and talk about what kind of lore you like and what era(s) and faction(s) you think look cool and would be fun for you. There's so much to choose from, It will make you head spin. But if you want to keep playing the game, slap on some paint already; it's a sign of respect to the setting and your opponent. Show some pride. Do your part in honoring the narrative and the setting by making the suspension of disbelief that much easier for you both. You wouldn't show up to a group of historical wargamers without your soldiers painted to look the part, and Battletech is a historical wargame, too - it's just set a thousand years in the future. You don't have to be skilled to make your minis look awesome: Even if you just paint them a solid color, or in random sploches, then weather with some washes and add some basic jeweling to the weapons and cockpit... it's gonna look pretty great. The midels are really easy to make look quite nice. They were designed with painting in mind, afterall. Battletech is full of people who will talk your ear off about how not very good they are, yet their minis still look rad. Catylist sculpts are just really easy to make look good. IWM is starting to sell the new sculpts, too Just remember that ln rhe setting, most of these machines are probably getting painted in the field with whatever is available by fellow mechwarriors earning their beer money, using oil drums for paint pots and brooms for brushes. Maybe the Royal Regiments and Guards and the like get nice fancy detailing booths and stuff, and maybe you want to use an airbrush, but there's no need to make it look clean in Battletech. Don't be shy about adding some battle damage with a hot nail or craft knife if you like that look. You can find a canon unit that has pretty much any paint scheem you loke on Cammo Specs, you can cone up with your own paint job for your own personal Merc unit, and basically can't go wrong with a stupid-simple Star League style Olive Drab.

My FASA era mechs are all painted. I got some CGL mechs recently, and I spent time trying to think of a paint scheme that expresses the present me the best. As I sat looking at the bare mechs, I realized that they're already there.

For goodness sake. It is not difficult to paint a mini. Prime in gray, put the colors you want on the mini (we call this blocking in your colors, go with a green everywhere and a gunmetal on the weapons), dark tone/nuln oil shade on the whole mini. Paint the cockpit glass straight red, orange or blue. Done. Varnish in a matte varnish so you don’t have to deal with the paint rubbing off. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It takes an hour. Just do it, loser. Learn the advanced techniques later.
