I suffer from anxiety and depression, not to mention being born with ADHD. Football is one of my coping strategies, but because its stress free, just me, my feet, and the ball. I can't imagine how hard it is for pros, not only are their livelihood riding on their football, they have to deal with criticism from social media and local fans. I applaud you guys so much for shedding much needed light on this issue.

I'm a 21 year who's been suffering from depression and anxiety since I was 15, but only got help last year as it spiralled to its lowest point when I started off at University. My grades plummeted and finally I admitted to my parents what was going on. They've been as supportive as they can but there are certain things they'll never understand. I think the most important thing about speaking to others about their mental health problems is to not pretend like there's an easy fix or that you know how they can help themselves - NEVER say things like "just stay positive," "be yourself," "enjoy yourself," or "others are in a much worse situation than you." These kinds of phrases de-legitimize the seriousness of mental health problems. There is not an easy fix to a mental health issue, in fact many of them are much harder to battle than physical injuries. When it comes to physical injuries, you know when you're healed. With mental health issues you're never quite sure. Unless you're a therapist, people with mental health disabilities aren't looking for solutions when they approach you with their problems, they're only looking for reassurance that you're there to support them and that they can count on you to be there for them when they need someone to vent to. To Chris and the rest of the EFD team, I salute you for your bravery in tackling these important topics. You guys might feel like normal people but the truth is you have a platform with a significant following, so when you say something (good or bad) it'll reach and affect more people than if I say something. Thank you for educating us on this, hopefully professional and non-professional associations alike will take action to provide more help, not just to their players, but to their managers, medical staff, media team, and everyone else all the way down to the chefs and nutritionists.

Great content. As a performance psychologist for a professional football academy myself all that has been spoke about here is evident in today's game. It is vital that psychologists are ingrained further into every club, with trust and confidentiality with the players the main priority. I also believe that coaching staff and players need to complete mental health first aid courses, enabling them to spot the route causes and refer for help when needed. Great content again guys, glad the conversations are happening!

Football has also caused me a bit of depression. I didn't want to go pro or anything, just have fun, but because everytime I played football with my friends (not in a professional setting, just school matches or training[also as a team we were really awful if I might add, we rarely won any matches]) they would constantly yell at me when I made a mistake. And I know they targeted me because I'm the skinny, shy, unattractive, introverted, soft spoken guy on the pitch plus when someone else made the same mistakes I would they wouldn't get yelled at. It was the same in other situations like in conversations and classwork, only difference is I played football for fun and many times I really enjoyed it, and it made my day, so that's why I kept playing hoping for that feeling again. I also did what I could to get on everyone's good side, I came for summer training, I showed up early for training, I always put 100% on the pitch (even though I wasn't very good) but I still felt incredibly unappreciated. The coach would also play me in really hard positions that I was unfamiliar with, so as you can imagine, I'd mess up a lot in that position, and then proceed to get yelled at some more. If I had the confidence I would've stood up for myself, but that moments gone now. In the end I just stopped playing it because people took it too seriously and I became a scapegoat for their mistakes and even when I played well I rarely got any recognition for it. I still enjoy football but only on TV or FIFA. It's a real shame because I've always enjoyed the sport, and I'll always have a few good memories from it, but my experiences with it have just made me sad and put it off for me, it's just sad because it's a team sport and when I see Liverpool play together and how happy they seem, I feel sad that I never really got that.

Thank you for this video!! When talking about mental health in football i can‘t help but think of Robert Enke the former goalkeeper of my team Hannover 96.. he was our key player and an absolute fan favorite but he struggled massively with his mental health over his career until he unfortunately took his life in 2009. It was a shock for the whole city and it‘s still a topic up to this day and shed a lot of light on the human beings behind the football stars here in germany

Hire a professional psychologist in every single club and a professional youth psycholigist in every single club academy. Like this at least people may havw who to look to for their problems. As for rejected players in their youth, I think they must be given second chance or at least sent on career advising. I myself struggle with bipolar disorder. I know very well what 'mental health problems' means. I know there are people who have even worse struggles than mine. They must be looked into. I recommend processing the song Subdivisions by Canadian rock band Rush. Written in 1983 and released the same year it still is contemporary.

Great video! Here's the tricky part in my opinion. How do you know if you have mental health problems, or are you just sad for a few days, or just bored, or something like that? I have never experienced mental health problems (and I am really glad for that) but for people that really do how safe is the system? What if there wasn't that much wrong with you, but you get told by a therapist that you are doing horribly just because you spoke that you weren't feeling that great for the last month for example. Then you get treated as if you are doing really badly, and as a result start feeling horrible for real this time because you were mistreated. In that instance speaking about your mental health just made it worse. I believe that is also one of the reasons players decide not to share to much. I am also not sure about speaking up always, because there are certainly cases where people use their mental health as an excuse, or as a defense, even though they really don't have real mental health problems at all but just want a pity party, which is disrespectful to people that have real struggles. But then again if only they know themselves that they are all right, does it matter for other people who get inspired if someone is faking it?

I share the same opinion, I think there is a lot of people in the world today who overexaggerate just feeling a bit down and then claim its bipoler or some shit, there is alot of people suffering from mental health but those that exaggerate or even make up their problems are worse than the people pointing this fact out, ive had this argument with people who have nothing wrong yet claim they are the most mentally ill person on the planet and try say im evil and inconsiderate but yaknow attention seekers hate it when you call them out

It's absolutely amazing to see a sports channel doing this. Brilliant work by y'all. However football aside, this is a problem with men in general. We think talking about things and being vulnerable is 'gay', when it's actually something you SHOULD do. Talking about things and admitting about your issues does not make one weak. Here's to hoping this is talked about more and more action is taken towards it.

I think that a great idea would be that a percentage of each players wage goes to a mental health organisation inside the club. When signing a contract 10% of wage goes to the organisation. Players can negotiate of course but 1% minimum... if not no contract. Im sure someone can do the math but 1% of all pro players salarys can make a difference.

This is a good point but this issue is bigger than football. Anybody who is in public eye are generally idolized and we forget that there are humans because of this. I am a psychology student and I most say we all suffer from mental health; and we need to realize that we should be kind to football plays / people in public eye. They miss a penalty or have a bad run of games but is fans putting too much pressure on them is bad for there mental health I.e xhaka

How do you get through to someone who understands that theyre not well but cant seem to be able to be honest about what theyre going through, i wish it was more acceptable for us men to be able to humble ourselves and communicate between mates more freely, talking about how you experience life isnt a fucking weakness its just how being human works. Not pouring your energy into helping yourself means you become tired emotionally aswell as physically its not something you need to try to understand on your own boys, its sometimes too bleak on your own
