Well, the title slightly upset me on a personal level, but I stuck till the end of the video. And, I am glad the end made me feel better. I have been working as a volunteer for over 14 years. I pretty much had all of the same reasons to quit my volunteer work after just a few weeks. I was living in a high cost region. I had to take a train ride, a tram ride and a boat ride to get to the destination. And, I was (still, am) terrified of boat rides. It took me more than 1.5 to 2 hours each way. The transportation fares and lunch money (for a good meal to replenish energy from labor work) do add up over time. I was basically allowing myself to give up over these issues. After some thinking into the purpose of my being, I decided to stick with it. As time moved on, probably after two years, all of these no longer became my obstacles. Money, no problem; Time, no problem; Rainy days, no problem; Rocky boat rides, hmmmm... Right now, after years of establishment, I am glad people are appreciating my work (our work). My point is, stick with it for a little longer, it may change the way you see volunteering. By the way, this week is National Volunteer Week in the U.S. Happy Volunteering!

I don't even care that this video may be commissioned by the Youth Corps, I think the experience changed Zijie, Nina, and Aurelia a little. Their sharing was very authentic and heartfelt - coming from someone who doesn't volunteer on the regular too I felt that they genuinely learnt and were humbled by the experience, and that is amazing on so many levels. keep doing what you do NOC. Even if I don't eventually become a regular volunteer, I'm sure you'll have changed the perspectives of people who have never, ever seen the social sector before, making them more appreciative of the unsung heroes who do this work. Maybe, just maybe, someday I'll look back and remember this video and feel motivated to volunteer :D

A little late, but I feel that volunteering is an experience that everyone should try at least once in their entire lifetime. In high school, I was part of the school's prefectorial board and it is a tradition that we do an overseas humanitarian trip every year and do local ones as well. I had the opportunity to go on two overseas trips (We are from Kuching, Malaysia) and it is a real eye-opener for us as youths. We visited Ho Chih Mihn City, Vietnam in 2018 and helped out three of their local orphanages but what we didn't know was that the children were not normal, they were affected by the after-effects of the Vietnam war, and to see them still able to be happy and live life, it really warms my heart. The most tear-jerking thing was the second orphanage... the place was very dim and had a musty smell, and it really shocked me when we saw the kids because they were kept in cages... The caretaker explained to us why they were kept that way though, she told us that if they were out they would kind of fight each other and harm themselves so its best they were kept like that. And last year we visited a primary school in the rural areas of Chiangmai, Thailand. The children were really energetic and happy that we were there to teach them about hygiene and help them decorate their school, they even had a performance for us before we left. It is really heartwarming that all these children still live with a smile on their face and be so kind and welcoming toward us as total strangers. These trips definitely opened all our eyes and I really wish I could experience them again (P.S I graduated last year) But I will definitely do more charity work in my own time, it just really makes my entire day and my heart warm when I see others smile :)

After a ten year stint with SVC and NCSS, I gave in to the society norm of looking after yourself and family first. To find a job and earn money and seek pleasures that benefitted oneself. Doing social work really doesn't pay well in Singapore but, it's never about being paid well or being rich when it comes to serving others and helping others in need. Be appreciative, help one another and be kind to one another.

Maybe you can do a feature on what homes need help and where can they sign up and also tell them that no matter how introvert they are, finding the right avenue to do it could be a big step forward. I used to be also training with the Singapore Wheelchair Basketball for a while, not sure on where are they now but there are many places that need help if they want to try. A small step forward, a big leap for a better tomorrow.
