-Money is a hot topic, and it's easy for disagreements to turn into full-blown fights. In this episode, we dive into the common reasons why we fight about money with our partners, family members, and even friends. We explore how our past experiences, cultural influences, and even the nature of our brains can lead to conflict and how to navigate these situations with grace and understanding.
Key Takeaways:
-We're not taught how to argue about money: Most of us don't have the skills to discuss financial matters without resorting to emotion or negativity.
-Being "On the same page" doesn't mean conflict-free: Healthy relationships include differences of opinion, even about money.
-We often hit below the belt: Media and cultural narratives can influence how we approach conflict, and sometimes we end up attacking our loved ones without realizing it.
-Ultimatums are a form of coercion: Instead of trying to control someone's actions with threats, learn to set clear boundaries and communicate your needs respectfully.
-The "money fight" is often about something deeper: Underlying insecurities about control, trust, and personal values can trigger intense conflict around money.
-Respecting each other's processes is key: Understand that everyone comes from a different place, has different experiences, and different beliefs.
-It's okay to not have all the answers: Embrace the process of communication, negotiation, and compromise.

Thank you for this "rich" conversation! I can relate to Kiersten because I grew up being conflict avoidant as well and had to learn how to communicate my needs while respecting the other person's needs as well. It is definitely a dance and I loved how you used that metaphor in this discussion. My husband and I are taking a trip this week to explore a new area which I thought was just a mini-vacation, but he's been looking at properties and wants to consider a potential investment opportunity. We are doing well financially, both retired and enjoying life. I am willing to see the properties but am clear that no contract will be signed on this trip. We have been able to communicate openly about our expectations and also try to do that with other decisions as well! I hope listeners who struggle with conflict of any kind take the time to listen to this over and over again....Y'all dropped a lot of knowledge and wisdom. Thanks again!

I needed this today. We are in the process of helping aging parents and their financial decisions are questionable. However this conversation has helped me remember they deserve grace they made the best decision they thought to be true. We have more knowledge then them and unfortunately they didn't feel comfortable to get our help and that is okay we will just support from this point moving forward. Thank you for the adjusted perspective. We all need second opinions because it's easy to get stuck in group thinking! Have a great day

I like the topic. I feel too much time is wasted talking about scenarios instead of actually talking about how to do it.
