Great & relevant topic! I went through this for years starting abruptly with the health decline of my father and his wife, then my mother, and I'm still caregiving for my disabled sister. I've learned a lot and wish I knew what I know now at the onset. Now I'm 65, hubby is 62 and I am determined my children will not suffer what I did by trial and error. I refuse to be a burden to them when pre-planning can alleviate some of the work involved. In addition to cleaning out clutter, putting financial affairs in order, and making last wishes known, we have open talks about who's gonna wipe our butts (literally) if the need arises, etc. This is life's realities. No time for beating around the mulberry bush. Safe, affordable housing is one of the major issues for sure. There are many others. Thx for the Convo😊

This is absolutely an episode that focused on a topic that is near and dear to my heart as I lived my own experience being a caregiver to my late Mom and presently with my mother-in-law. There are so many layers to navigating life with an elder parent/family member and like many major life moments, there isn't a manual so to speak to refer to. You often feel like you are on your own in this journey...I know I did as I faced this starting when I was 36 yrs old. Caregivers are an unseen and often unpaid labour force in our society and most are not equipped, prepared, or supported well enough to do their best work for so many reasons as you elicited via the AARP report. There is an emotional and financial toll that is often paid by both the elder and caregiver(s) and it is life altering. Thank you both for sharing your experiences and suggestions as this is needed for many who are presently in the throes of this and/or will face this. ❤

My husband and son have ADHD and learning how different their mind works is shocking. I will say having a husband with ADHD has helped me better understand my son's behavior as he's able to give language to our son'actions or in many cases lack thereof. You hit the nail on the head when you said to truly understand the disease you'll get the most valuable information talking to someone with it, not necessarily a doctor. A resource I've found helpful on KZfaq is the channel ADDtitude Magazine, they also have a website and an actual magazine.

Your podcast title caught my eye with the "Affordable Housing for Aging Parents". I can relate to the new build as I moved into a 62+ in April 2022. By the grace of god, I was approved right before I was laid off & have been struggling ever since to obtain that steady/stable income. SS retirement, savings & IRA is getting me by for the time being. Fortunately for me, I can advocate for myself & have computer knowledge/experience. It is sad that this country did not put more energy, advocacy & monies for seniors & senior housing 20-30 yrs ago knowing that the population is living longer. Keep making informative podcasts. Thank you.

I’m going through this now. The perfect situation would be a “little house” in my back yard. They have them in Shreveport Louisiana where I grew up. So my mom could still have her own space. Problem is I have no plans on living on Shreveport ever again. So my brother is considering a duplex in Dallas but it’s just a lot bc I have kids and he doesn’t it would make more sense for her to live by me but I live in Charlotte with a thriving career and she doesn’t want to move here

People never think about this. We talk about dating etc. acting like we gonna be just fine doing things alone but we have no clue how expensive it's going to be living while old not to mention before we get old how much taking care of our parents will take from us. Its easy to say they are on their own they should have thought about this but the fact is that they didnt or they did and medical costs are just too much for them. Things happen.

Yes but it’s not as simple as it may seem. Living with a parent who is accustomed to certain things as entrepreneurs actively raising a child isn’t a seamless process. If she had no choice then of course we would’ve led with that but she had options and luckily found one that worked out perfectly.

I'm interested in this topic as I'm coming to terms with ADHD myself (still haven't gotten a diagnosis). But at a meta level I'm wondering why the ADHD disclosure is such a big deal either to your audience or black viewers. or the black community at large. I wonder if it's the clarity of a diagnosis, fear of therapy/psychiatry, or just some type of gap of awareness of the negative impacts of ADHD.... not sure. Really glad you guys are sharing this now though.

Mental health is stop widely taboo and misunderstood. But one of our goals was to help people better understand why they or their partner just can’t “do the things” they’re expected to do. We’re too quick to judge and/or apply a label to people and hopefully this conversation leads others to realize that perhaps there’s another reason for the disconnect.

It’s tough, so thank you for talking about this topic… let’s not talk about lack of estate planning and just broaching THAT subject with your parent 😩
