The cost of living in Mexico has been rising quickly and it seems that living in Mexico costs more each month. Is Mexico affordable now?

I'm a Mexican female living in Mexico all her life. I've noticed that the cost of living in Mexico has been rising rapidly and at the same time, we needed to move out of our home in Queretaro, Mexico. What were we going to do?
As we looked at our options, we saw we would need to spend more money to have the same standard of living in Queretaro, Mexico. We realized the cost of living was increasing in Queretaro.
Which were our options? Why we moved out of Mexico?
We evaluated different factors to think if we could stay in Queretaro, move to another city in Mexico or move to another country. Here's the breakdown of the video:
1. Our personal situation
2. The things you can't change?
3. What can we control?
Am I being affected by the high cost of living in Mexico?
If you like my work, buy me a coffee (Sometimes I stay awake until very late to finish a video)

Hola Mija! I am an immigrant from Ireland. Living in Baja for the past 10 years, on a path to citizenship (The exam questions are so hard!!!-What does papalote mean in Nahuatl?...!!!!!), anyway, my Yaqui wife bought land years ago and I built a house: 4k for the land, 40k for the house construction. With no mortgage, monthly expenses are very cheap-utilities:

When people say they can live on less traveling than staying at home, I think they are almost always speaking about going to a less expensive country. The Colombian peso has fallen while the Mexican peso has risen against the USD, so you are probably seeing larger price differences between Mexico and Colombia than ever before.
@hoppeanofasgard1365
@hoppeanofasgard1365 Жыл бұрын
A stronger Mexican Peso would mean as a Mexican that in general you can buy more in Colombia, still, non the less, don't exp[ect everything top be cheaper in Colombia than in Mexico, Colombia has stupidly high tariffs that make electronics and some other things way more expensive than they should be, the same can be said for Brazil and Argentina too.

I’ve been watching your channel as I’m a retired Mexican/American. More American, as I’ve lived most of my life in the US. I just returned from 2-weeks in Mexico, a week at the beach in Cancun and a week in Queretaro. Your perspective is very interesting, as your story reflects the life in this post industrial world economy. My working life from 1970 through 2013 was in the tail end of the Industrial Revolution. I learned a trade (no collage), however both my wife & I managed to ride the wave of rising housing values, we also saved approximately 5-10% of our income each year (invested on stocks via the 401k plans here in the US). Today, as senior citizens we see the possibility of becoming political or financial refugees, as we consider a future move to Mexico. Don’t give up on KZfaq. BTW, I spent time in Columbia in the 90’s, nice country, but dangerous when I was there. ❤

Greed is the reason prices are going up, and people are laid off. I am 80, and I moved to Queretaro at 79 in 2021. The dollar is falling, but God will take care. I do get a pension, and I left the USA, because it is deadly and super expensive. Rent, Food etc. is going up, but less than the USA. I do help many none beggars. At 80, I have always invested into good people. God bless everyone.

This is a comment from William: Hola Ruby. There is no one right answer for everyone. Some people are uncomfortable moving about the world and may be intimidated by anything different or foreign. They may even be fearful of the "other" and need the familiar to be comfortable, and owning a house is equated with security. Other people have an innate curiosity about the world and are rewarded by embracing the foreign and different cultures over the horizon. Such people value experiences and memories more than financial security, although they don't have to be mutually exclusive. My choice was to travel extensively in Mexico and the southwest portion of the US until I was about 40. I didn't work to buy a house. I worked to travel while I was young enough to explore Mexico cheaply and not feel inconvenienced by basic accommodations. 70 pesos a week for a hotel room in San Cristobal de Las Casas? More than adequate for my purposes, and the money saved was available to buy huipils, bags and belts from the Indian women weavers. The hotel rooms or B&B apartments the KZfaqrs of today show are palaces compared what I was happy with as a young traveler. Perhaps coming of age during the hippy era helped. I've traveled more than 100,000 kms in Mexico, visited all of the states in Mexico except Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas, visited places rarely if ever seen by tourists, been the guest of wealthy land owners, campesinos and indios in remote mountain settlements, taken thousands of photos and recorded my travels in diaries, and I wouldn't trade my experiences and memories for a handful of houses. I still don't own a house but with a little luck I should outlive my savings. I can no longer travel but I have 30 feet of books on Mexico and the internet is loaded with interesting videos on Mexico. I'm more than happy to share my knowledge and love of Mexico, and the Mexico I knew 40-55 years ago is the subject of history books. That Mexico has mostly disappeared. But not in my mind. Travel while you can. You are smart enough and hard working enough to deal with the future, whenever that comes. There are cheaper places than Queretaro in Mexico, still very nice, and they will be available at a price the average Mexican can afford as long as the expats don't discover them before you do. Plus, you know how to work remotely, so location is less critical than when I was your age. Great video. Have lots of fun in Colombia.

What an amazing and well-lived life path you are on! I've even saved your post It's so beautiful and inspiring. I grew up with wanderlust, have traveled extensively throughout all of America and down the Baja peninsula. I feel peace in places that are media has brainwashed us are dangerous. Of course they want all of the American dollars here in the right? Our money is not ours to hoard and trust me it goes so much farther everywhere else then clenched tightly in our own fist, or stored in bank accounts that can be seized by governments everywhere. IMHO, you guys chose the wrong city to begin with, although Querétaro is a very nice city but it’s going to get more expensive each year. I chose to move to Morelia in December 2020 over Querétaro or San Miguel de Allende, even I could afford it. There are many other places are still undiscovered, and I could notice that Morelia has started to have more expats since I arrived a bit over 2 years ago. I’m glad that I bought a house in Morelia and I feel stable with my life here! No worry about the rental expenses which it has started to rise from one year to the next. My recommendation is to purchase the best house you could afford and travel frequently to other places as you wish. Best of luck! Colombia would not be my first choice!

Came across your video and thought I'd just tell my little story....I took up photography about a year ago (this is after 4 eye surgeries and bad vision for nearly 20 years). People started noticing my work so I decided to pursue it. I had been set on traveling, in my car for at least a time and trying to do what is called "car life." Not because I had too but because I want to change my situation. I am a gig worker in the US and since we have corrupt politicians destroying our way of life up here, the gig economy has become way less lucrative. I don't know if the economy is going to totally collapse or not, all I know is, I want to live my best life before it does if it does. I started making traveling videos on my channel. Right now I only have 76 subs but I love it so I'm going to continue investing in myself. I took a chance and a trip to southern california from phoenix last month and had a really great time, took wonderful photos and will developing my videos soon for that trip....HOWEVER...on the way back, my car's transmission went out so now I've been stuck at home, hoping to find a stay at home job...found one, but it's only commission but it is in the travel industry, hopefully it works out decently....so what you say about making plans but can't control what happens is absolutely true. I'm hoping to do van life next...that's my plan. (p.s...I subbed your channel, I'm interested in learning more about Mexico) :)

I think it's great that you and Dave have chosen to travel. You are both still young and are working online, that makes it so much easier. I love all of your videos and am enjoying being a student in your Thrive in Spanish Async class, I would recommend it to anyone. Hola hermana. Property is always the best long term investment that you can make. It doesn’t need to be developed property, open range or woodlands is great too. Real estate property values are declining in the USA. Purchase undeveloped property in the states of Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, and Utah. Purchase more than 20 acres. In rural areas, less than 20 acres means that you fall under a different set of government regulations. I recommend buying 1,000+ acres of rangeland bordered by BLM land. Sit on it as a long term investment. The value will only increase.

I sold my rental property (house) last year while the market was still hot. And I have now invested most of that money into high dividend stocks.

My rent in MX just went up 10% this month bc of the mx peso, not to mention all the items and services that went up not due to the exchange rates. It's probably time for many nomads to pack up and go elsewhere. I assume you are not talking about 401k or SIEFORE, my stock/crypto portfolio is like 5% of my net, it's like money to play at the casino. it's proven that real estates almost always go up over time, and it's one of the most common ways to transfer wealth from one generation to the next. You don't have to settle down in one place to buy a house. The rentals I collect give me the flexibility to live anywhere and is funding my future retirement

Karencita if you explore the option of going to India and doing the digital nomad thing there with your husband for 6 months and go to some cool places, you MIGHT grow a lot there because Indians love their country so much. They will follow you as long as you make videos there that are good. You might be able to make a decent living off KZfaq if you do the India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, The Philippines and Vietnam circuit. I have been doing the research by following what palces and how many views KZfaqrs like Harry Jaggard, Davud Akhundzada, World Nomac, Banjamin Jenks, Paddy Doyle, Nicole And Mico, Those Happy Years, Rhett And Claire, etc get and it's A LOT! The key is to stay in those areas and just travel around them. When these people have left back to Europe or the Middle East or South America, views drop drastically. When they go back to India, etc, the views shoot back up. Just something to think about for you and your husband. I'm currerntly living in Envigado next to Medellin. If you ever wanna, we can do a Live Stream interview. If not, no se preocupe. Keep Chasing Your Dreams. Never Give Up. Travel the world as long as you guys wanna. There's so much out there to see and so many cool people to meet.

I’ve subscribed and yes, get as many income steams as possible, very unstable world nowadays and you have to be adaptable as you say. And as as someone from the U.K. I can understand what your mother in law is saying about the U.K.; I moved from there back in 2008 but can’t imagine how expensive it has become, keep those videos coming your information is great and admirable.

Sounds like you have thought everything through very well. Housing might be a big expense when you travel. If you are frugal and don't party too much, I would think you could live "on the road" just as cheaply or for less than in Querétaro.

Hi Mija. This tip is just for you. Start watching energy stocks and how thier patterns move with the seasons, hot, cold weather, a storm, or even loud mouth politicians. You can always rest assure when these dip or crash “ it’s time to buy that dip” Energy stocks always go back up

Hola Karencita. The main problem in todays world is that prices increase everywhere but not income. I am from Quebec but I can't afford to live there anymore. I love Latin America but South-East-Asia is less expensive for a good quality of life. You remember your stay in Vietnam? I can live well in Thailand for less than half the price in Quebec. Food is great, people are nice, it is secure and Internet is great. I can even travel to neighbour countries. The only problems are linguage and visas. I am now exploring the Philippines.

100% it is possible to travel and be financially responsible, we have been doing it for 12 years and counting. For example our first full month here in Ecuador our food costs were ~$300 USD. In Canada our average monthly cost for food is $1000 USD. We will save ~$4200 USD in food costs alone in the 6 months we will stay in Ecuador. That will cover our airfare with significant real dollar savings on top. We even saved significant money travelling to/living in the expensive location of Aruba recently. We will say that financial frugality while travelling is more feasible with a slow travel approach because more moves equals more costs, especially when changing countries. Thank you for the video, we hope you enjoy your travels!👍🙄

Hi, came across your channel for the 1st time, subscribed and 👍🏼, I read some of the comments, not sure if you are still making plans for your next destination, if you go to Colombia, I've heard better things about Medellin than Bogota, as you may be aware, there are many nomads on YT, you can check about COL., but another suggestion is PANAMA, I'm dying to go there, many North American Expats there, there are many YT vlogs about it...hope you check it out, and who knows, maybe you'll be streaming from there in the next few months..best of luck.

I own both stocks and rental properties. Both are generally good investments but different. Stocks of good companies held over a long time can generate great returns but come with a lot of market volatility vs. rental properties do not generate as much potential value increase but they can give you steady monthly rent income

Well you arent the only content creators to be either quiting or up and nomading around. So many are doing it now like almost at the same time, wow. Its a brave move and i wish you well. As far as stocks go, I personally wouldnt touch it right now. If i did it would probably be in energy or war supplies ! 7 days in a row on the downward, no funds injected by the fed. Safer bet would be gold and silver, real money. Assets. Keep us updated on your progress, best wishes, travel safe and do it while you have your health (thats what i did). cheers !

🤔 I feel like best decision not to buy any IMmobile stuff but staying MOBILE 😉 especially in these times of uncertainty. What’s inside of you, your experiences, lessons learned will add up during time staying with you wherever you go and can’t be stolen 😂 Following my own experiences: when in doubt it’s a “NO” because whenever the best offer is right in front of you there are no doubts anymore but you know “this is it” and go for it without any hesitation. Recommendation: not looking back and overthinking what you have done! For the time being it is what it is and that’s it. Now enjoy and look ahead 😉 Good luck 🍀

Hi. Maybe learning skills that are really practical, like sowing and more of that. Learn survival skills and all kinds of wild edible plants, mushrooms and other stuff. Things are really gonna get bumpy and stoks and internet related stuff wont mean as much as they do now. Owning a house and some land is always a good thing, but when even those get taken away its great knowing survival skills. I hope things wont get as bad as I am imagining but its always good to prepare for the worst. Try spending more time with your loved ones...time goes so quickly and those moments spent with them are so precious. All the best wishes to everyone.
