My dad used to run a printing business in Bangalore. When I was 17, we didn't have the money for engineering college seat. I thought of dropping out and start work at the printing shop on a full time basis. Just a week before CET seat selection, a rich guy came with a massive order to print his daughter's wedding invitation. The entire order gave us a profit of Rs 9000, which was exactly the amount needed for an engineering seat back then. I would say, Before the 2000s, weddings ran the economic engine of the country.

Back then people didn't have much of a choice. Either take up govt jobs or open a small business. Except for marriages, Indians are very thrifty. They spend a lot of money on their sons or daughters marriage. We got a small pie (printing), then there is pendal people, decorators, house keeping staff, florists, priests, catering.. And the list goes on and on.

Yes, but no one told them to hold a grand weddings beyond their means. I now live in australia and people here take big loans for things they don't need to impress people they don't like. It is a universal problem. In India it is wedding, and in Australia it is boats and 4x4

The no 1 threat for wedding industry is genZ and their ever evolving trends and behaviour. GenZs are proving to be more reasonable and logical in some aspects of our life and can bring about massive changes in the amount of money spent during weddings.

point to note is that not everyone in gen z is like this, only the top portion(10%-20%) with access to resources, like quality education, the rest are doing worse by being trapped in status war and doing more showoff or impulse buying finally getting debt trapped. So its not going to be all good by itself unless we all support each other.

most of the money spent by these big fat weddings (except paying for Rihanna) stays in the country and in the local economy where poor's benefits the most whereas you will be spending mostly on international hotels, and international destination. Although this is not good example of investment in local economy but this is the reality.

Wedding are once in a lifetime experience. And if someone want to make it memorable then it's their choice. I appreciate it. Edit: People who fall in debt after weddings don't really want to celebrate it big but are actually pressurized by the society. Obviously there is need to eradicate this problem so that no one is pressurized in spending more or less. What's important is freedom.

Yeah its their choice to be financially unstable, if they can afford then its good but the problem is most of the weddings in India are funded by debts and in rural areas those debts come from unauthorized sources which make them fall in a debt trap so tell me is it that important to so off your wedding or just be a financially literate person and spend only if you Can afford it

Personally speaking, there is nothing wrong with big fat weddings. There are many caterers, designers, jewelers, decorators etc who get a job through such weddings. If you have the money for a BIG FAT wedding, go for it. The problem starts when an average middle class girl wants an Ambani style wedding and they force their parents to take a loan and organise such a wedding. Stick to your budget. Just because some people don't have the money to do a big fat wedding, does not mean you have to be jealous or frustrated looking at somebody else's Big Fat Wedding. Some people seriously need to Grow Up.

**and vice versa Sometimes it's other way round.. _The problem starts when an average middle class parents wants Ambani style wedding and then force their children indulge on and organise such weddings.._ I know my Dad doesn't have enough money to have Grand wedding.. he will be taking loan for sure.. then spend next 4-5 yrs to repay them.. personally I don't enjoy gatherings and Camera attention.. Amount spend on showing off your (Fake) Wealth ≠ How Happy I will be in my married life .. I will get nothing.. all will be gone.. I want to get married in a temple.. simple.. and beautiful... When Catholics marry at church.. Sikhs marry in Gurudwara.. why can't we marry in Temple.. I m searching for a Groom who will be on the same tangent as of me.. 😊 --- Avg Middle class Girl..

I think RENTING is a hot topic now, be it House, Cars or Clothes... So does it make sense to build a cloth's brand (like manyavwar) or build a cloth renting brand by sourcing clothes from manyavwar (and renting a single cloth to say 5-6 people at 20-25% of the MRP) Would love to hear your POV

Indian wedding on an have 2000 minimum people coming to attend the wedding function. so, they basically recover most of the wedding expenses in the form of gifts. Also, at the end of the day it's an unification of two families. two big families. lots of people are employed by Indian wedding industry

As per my experience it would be 300 on avg(at least in cities) and not 2000(unless in rural areas). Also not even a portion of the cost is recovered in marriage as only close relatives give gifts and in return you have to give gifts in their wedding or "It WOULDN'T LOOK GOOD". Just think about the cost for a week long functions with accommodations for guests. Unification of two families will happen regardless of doing these big weddings like what happens in case of court or temple marriages. And using 20% of life saving just for the sake of employing people once is not a good justification. Spend only what is necessary and don't be trapped in showoff.

@@shubhamtariyal439 yes agreed. Spending money on luxury car or big smartphones are also luxury. People must consider those. Atleast wedding money is spent within India mostly. So basically money remains in Indian economy. Buying luxury cars and smartphones you end up supporting foreign countries

@@ganeshr4371 I really don't understand the mentality, when it comes to marriage you all think of indian economy, but why not other times? Is marriage the only way to contribute? Also freebies does more damage to economy, even then support it, but people shouldn't by foreign products😢

Small Indian startups should utilise and make costs low for marriages and make every penny count for the ppl who spend. Of course we will spend more. But it should always stay in budget.

Sometimes you are even valued for the expensive gifts that are sent to the groom's family from the bride's family(it may be plates ,spoons ,gold jewellery and property etc)and even how many varieties of dishes were prepared for the wedding and we can't say anything because in the end they say it's not the gifts it's about self respect of the family

I still don't get it why someone would spend so much on just a wedding. I mean, for ultra rich people, I understand. But even middle class people are also spending so much on just a ceremony !!!

Sad that instead of spending this money on something meaningful to improve the state of the country we want to cater to rich people doing hollow show off. India is full of talent, with great potential to spend money on science, discoveries and tech.
