Salmon are one of the most recognisable and iconic fish species in the world. Their epic life journey takes them from their birthplace high up in the rivers all the way to the ocean and back again to spawn and eventually die. In the process they support a multitude of other wildlife and ecosystems making them an all important keystone species. In this video we explore the threats that salmon face as well as three projects we have setup to help fight them.

@@davidlittle7182 Toxic food. Dioxins from the Baltic in the pellet feed. Do not feed your pet any kind of Salmon food. The Salmon used in pet foods are unfit for human consumption due to dioxin levels.

The Salmon are disappearing due to radioactive contamination of the food chain from the nuclear waste dumping in the seventies and eighties in the Irish sea. The barrel dumping stopped (back when Greenpeace were effective) but only because Sellafield bent the rules and now dump through a pipeline as this is "land based disposal". This is ongoing. Salmon spend most of their life at sea. An excellent examination of this is the documentary called "Radioactive waste: Dumped and Forgotten" here on youtube. Prof Chris Busby was eventually raided by the Police and had all his computers seized. I don't think that documentary was ever broadcast in the UK. Probably to protect the nuclear industry from liability and sanction.

Are dams in Scotland equipped with fish ladders? I understand that they can help. It may be time to evaluate the existing dams to determine if they are still needed and find alternative solutions for power generation for the most egregious offenders. Quite a few dams built in the early 20th century have been removed in the US and thus helped repair ancient salmon and other migrating fish runs on both coasts. Scotland is quite obviously in great need of a massive tree planting campaign particularly along water courses.

You can also create river offshoots which allow the salmon to go through a small fraction of diverted river. It's probably worse than the ideal, and makes them more susceptible to predators and more likely to get lost, but better than nothing for sure :)

There is a Salmon ladder at Pitlochry, on the river Tay but I’ve not visited many of the dams so I’m not sure. The Pitlochry ladder is a popular attraction though with a viewing window and Salmon counter.

most dams ive visited in scotland have fish ladders yes i was very surprised when i saw this dam dosent. ive only visited a few dams no where near the amount of dams acctually in scotland so the majority of dams might not have them, but of the dams ive visited myself i would 80% do yes.

It is the marine phase of the Salmons life cycle that is the problem. Nuclear waste dumping in the Irish sea being the main cause of the loss of Salmon.

The Atlantic Salmon can spawn several times. Note I say can, because most of them do not survive, but some do. It is the Pacific Salmon that dies after spawning

Excellent initiative, thanks for fighting the good fight. A couple of wee notes… It would be pretty challenging to monitor the sea lice in the river. Sea lice fall off their host within a maximum of 48hrs in fresh water. Also quite a lot is known about the migration route. It’s buoyed out in the North Sea. Have a look at the Missing Salmon Project. Keep up the good work !

The Spey used to be so full of salmon in the summer you couldn't see the riverbed. Was known as one if the best salmon fishing rivers in Europe. Now its empty. The main reasons there's no salmon, are the fleet of Russian boats in the North Atlantic that hoovered up all the black market fish for decades, secondly, the ban on culling seal populations.

The Sausage Principle states "If you love something, never find out how it's made" This very much applies to farmed salmon. My Father-in-Law hasn't touched the stuff since he worked on a fish-farm over 30 years ago. I cherish my ignorance, because it's tasty

Good on you for your efforts. Here on the Wye and its Welsh tributaries they have declined tragically. The 'Wye Usk Foundation' are doing great work to reverse this. Check them out - they're a veteran foundation. They might have some tips. Peace. Mark

Step one: Reintroduce wolves. There's no point in planting trees that will be eaten by deer.

That's probably not a reality over there. Probably the best these guys can hope for is some really heavily managed riparian areas, but that's probably enough to get them back into a fisheries management situation that's markedly better than where they're currently at. It's really important that these guys maintain the genetic integrity of that population and I think rebuilding these spawning watersheds is a crucial first step.

@@420JackG The problem is that the natural hydrology of the river systems is dependent upon tree cover, which no longer exists, since the destruction of the Caledonian forest, and all attempts at re-establishing that forest are thwarted by deer browsing... Wolves may be the answer to the deer problem.

The salmon run is one of the most beautiful things in the world, is it true that once the salmons that run up the rivers of Europe, also created loads of extra nutrients for the primeval forests? As what happens in Alaska and the American East Coast?

Read in NatGeo about a guy who wanted to map every Redwood from N Mexico to Canada and how far back from the sea they ran . While doing it it occurred to him that the trees higher up were as substantial almost as the ones down in the valleys which should have had the edge . As he followed the spawning fish climb the river sometimes the rains could stop a few days that would halt the flow and leave pools where the salmon would be stuck for a while . They would die in there if left too long and bears and other animals got an easy feed , and take it back to their young often berthed below the great roots of the Redwoods . The fish detritus and cubs shit meant the trees right up top were as well fed as the lowest .

@@draphotube4315 He also found out that the bears hate water in their ears , so they'll use their hind legs to kick up the dead fish from the bottom . So he got into the pool with them and got some great pics from about 3 yards away . Everything needs to thrive for this world to work properly , it's called the food chain for a very good reason .

Hi, What do you think about the idea of removing the dams from the streams and creeks etcetra. Reestablishing fish populations, opening up spawning grounds, has been a notable factor enabling dam removal on many rivers in the United States

i think you got one thing wrong. i work with salmon and seatrout. Smolt is only a very short transition just between river and sea. When it reach the sea and color turn blank a few days and its no longer a smolt. Growing ind the sea its not a smolt, only a few days. Its like a getting the first period just an ability that evolves. Actually a very interesting ability to prevent osmosis from drying up the freshwater fish, it makes a process where its organs filter out the salts, like when a whale blows "water" its actually most salt....

Well that's because it wasn't made with them in mind. There are solutions like fish ladders that can allow for the travel of fish or creating new river systems. It just wasn't something that was taken into account

In the US, many landowners are working with consultants who select improved native edible tree crops and berry crops to plant alongside riverways. These are gleefully called "riparian buffets" vs. your typical non-edible riparian buffers.

I wonder if you're planing to build little side flumes that need very little water. The salmon can travel along a gentle slope from below the dam to above it, and it's simple concrete but naturalized. And in reverse for the parr. :) I know you know salmon only need inches, no more than a decimeter, of running water to travel difficult passages. Its not enough water to affect the dam either.

Currently only one project as we have a European team. We collaborate with an organisation in California on Sea Otter research. We might look to expand in North America in the future with a full time person in the US or Canada. I know many people who were employed on the farms in the west coast of Scotland . You could take home 3 fish per week for your self . None of the locals ever took them , only the foreigners come to work there did . I only once tried a grade A wild salmon in its prime , poached from the Leven after 6 weeks , nearly every night , by a mate . He caught one fish and it was on his last night of trying , 1.2 meters long , I forget the weight . But I got two slices . Never had it since of that quality , it was memorable .

@@rcr76 it is every estuary in the UK and I suspect that it is a plan to attract great white sharks and other apex preditors to these shores ,... an oceanagraphic study boat will be monitoring British waters this year

@@johnstockburn6396 not sure it’s a plan to attract them .i suspect they are already here from time to time certainly orcas are .I know the amount of seals in Ne Scotland is very large and shooting of them is controversial as people only see the seal and not the returning salmon -sea trout .Also loads of dolphin and porpoise and at the same time next to no salmon netting .i know they are putting deer feet into the rivers far upstream to replace nutrients from spawned fish .islander outdoors does some great videos about uk sharks .think he’s on Isle of Man

People love or hate the idea of the European Bison reintroduction now imagine if we placed Bears back in Scotland, think that would be a lot more controversial, hence why people shouldn't worry about "giant beasts" bison are super chill, bears would be something to REALLY worry about

At around 4:30 in the video there is a mention that a significant thread comes from deforrestation and climate change. The effect of deforrestation is explained in the video as the trees near the river cool the river but the climate change effect was left without explanation. So I'm asking here, what is the significant thread to Scottish salmon from climate change?

That woman was so desperately trying to tie it to climate change when it was obviously deforestation. Even going as far to only admit they needed more trees for their carbon, not the reason for the entire video.
