Andie MacDowell might've had the strangest typecasting of all time. If you're having a hard time placing her, queue up any romantic movie from the '90s that featured a mystical male protagonist, and she's likely the co-star.

Spending the 90s lying to Andie MacDowell allowed us to see how horrible we were and ultimately let us become better people today. *Andie MacDowell was duped for our sins.*

@daniel johnson And Ramis wasn't involved at all. Even if he was involved, it's at best revisionist and adds a bunch of shit that wasn't in the film, having come out 23 years later. This entire discussion revolves around the movie, and it's not even remotely implied that Phil is bisexual. The story was complete with the end of the movie, and the musical is an adaptation, not a continuation. Nothing against the musical, other than my general distaste for musicals, but this video is about the movie. It's not like he's a historical figure we're learning more about, he's a fictional character, and his arc was completed in 1993.

I thought it was a visual gag. 'When life gives you lemons...' they both show the diffirent way's to go with life/eat the lemon. The first just straight-up eats it and the next cut's it in halve and pours salt on it (reminded me of a shot tequilla). The Andie Macdowall character even points out 'That's how *you* eat a lemon'. Michael or the Archangel denies the whole lemon, and says you don't need the lemon; 'All you need is love'. It's not what life gives you, it's what you do with it. However, and I find this personally hilarious, Michael is the only one who made 'lemonade'. By sqeezing the lemon in water and adding sugar he made lemonade. So 'When life gives you lemons, make lemonade'.

Doesn't fit the narrative. Did you think anything Cracked does is based on actual unbiased observations? OPCD is hella entertaining, at least.
@EvanCurrie
@EvanCurrie 6 жыл бұрын
it isn't necessary to include the few outliers that don't fit the narrative because the premise doesn't require that all incidents of her movies fit the statement, just that a 'disturbing' number of them do. It isn't the presentation of a scientific theory, where all available evidence has to fit. It's just a statement of "Wow, this happened a lot, didn't it?"

One more thing: one of the things I really like that the musical improves over the movie is that it does not romanticize Phil's initial pursuit of Rita at all or pretend that he's genuinely in love with her at that point and shows it to be as gross and creepy as it really is and our sympathies lie fully with Rita. And when he does start to really care about her and appreciate the way she sees the world, he pretty much leaves her alone from that point on and doesn't push for anything. By the end, he's only interested in making her and other people happy and not for any personal gain. And when they do get together, Rita is entirely the one to initiate it. And Phil isn't making grandiose declarations of love or ice sculptures of her face, he's just enjoying this moment with her without trying to control it.
@4dultw1thj0b
@4dultw1thj0b 6 жыл бұрын
Granted, there is still the problem of her not knowing the real him or about his inexcusable behavior towards her from before, but I think he respects her enough at that point to tell her the truth about how he came to be the person he is. I don't know how well that conversation would go for him, but at any rate he's done having it be all about him and wouldn't want to feel like he's taking advantage of her and building a relationship on a lie.

Absolutely do a Groundhog Day episode! On that note, I want to add that Phil Connors most definitely didn't rape anyone. That Rita is a barrier he can't cross and that can't be manipulated is the motivation for him to actually become a better person. If you think too much about it, that's not great either, but it's a lot better than rape.

Daniel O'Brien, that was a great video! So many small brilliant bits. "This...purple...episode(?) explores...". From the classification of Andie MacDowell's specific brand of type-casting, to your insights into the necessary assumptions required to believe and feel good about what happens to her characters in the resolution of those movies, it was all on point and very smart. The logic was excellent, and I really appreciated the clarification about playing by the internal rules of the movie in order to advocate for true love winning the day. Also the food tangent while addressing her character-arch in Michael was also a really funny touch. What does this mean "Gun to my head, nothing. Two guns to my head, everything." Really nice. Finally with, Magic Mike and her role in that movie as an "outlier the on the bell curve" was just good due diligence when talking about her career as an actress, and then you managed to creating a plausible resolution for said career-arch, also very nice. The Monday bit at the end, perfect. With the density of this video, that dynamic of being aware of the medium. Thanks for all your work, I have always enjoy your videos. I do also enjoy OCPD, even though it is a shift of format. Have a great week Daniel!

When I first this video's title, I thought finally! Someone's going to make a video about how annoying it was that every half-assed critic in the 90s thought Andie MacDowell couldn't act and would tell anyone who would listen at every opportunity. I spent a good chunk of that decade being frustrated by the inability of seemingly the entire world to realise how freaking adorable and adequately talented she was. This video was only slightly disappointing.

Phil may have been a shitty and manipulative and entitled dude, but I definitely think he still had a conscience and would not have sunk that low. It takes more than just lust to do something like that and I think, as self-centered as Phil is, he doesn't actively wish to hurt people. And someone hitting their breaking point and becoming a danger to themself doesn't make them inherently more likely to be a danger to others.

I mean, there are certainly people who are capable of doing horrible things as long they know they won't face consequences for them, but while Phil does spend a lot of time screwing around and being an asshole, I don't think that's the kind of person he is at his core.

I don't think the point is supposed to be that _anyone_ would do it. It's that that character specifically would, given that he's totally willing to use his powers to manipulate women into sex.

Saying he probably raped her was an unfair attack on his character and clearly not a part of the movie's cannon. Sure he did some very sleazy and very selfish things but he is clearly seen being slapped and/or walking out when his advances are rebuked. I insist on an apology as rape is one of if not the worst things you can do to someone hence accusing someone of such is pretty friggen low IMO

Just because a man can commit rape without facing legal consequences does not mean the man does commit the rape. NOT ALL MEN ARE RAPISTS. Unless what Mr. O'Brien is suggesting is that he would rape Andy-whatshername under these circumstances, which I now believe must be true.

You're correct, not all men are rapists, but in the movie Bill Murray's character does A LOT of illegal things including murder and his ultimate goal is to have Andie MacDowell sleep with him (and be in love with him.. I guess), so given that he's willing to do those awful things is it that big of a jump?... especially, given the circumstances, that whatever he does each day is forgotten the next.

Sam Walker Yeah, I'm having trouble remembering where he directly murdered someone. I know he had some suicide attempts as well as he stole money, but that's still a far ways away from the horrible act of rape.

There is an Intelligence Squared debate on the topic of something like "Does Science Disprove Religion." During the audience question portion, Andie MacDowell is apparently there and asks the science side a question something to the effect of "How you can not believe in God because roses exist and are beautiful?"

Did... Did you just equate depression driven suicide and groundhog theft to rape? That isn't cool.
@martinfrost4292
@martinfrost4292 6 жыл бұрын
Also, to be clear: yes, Phil was a sleaze bag throughout a lot of the movie and having sex with people under false pretences as analogous to rape is a valid conversation. However 'I almost definitely sexually assaulted her at some point, right? You'd assume so if I killed myself multiple times, and stole a groundhog, and [hyperbole about knowingly letting people die that didn't happen]' isn't it.
@aeronmartin5637
@aeronmartin5637 6 жыл бұрын
No, he's saying that given his mental state was so extreme that he actively murdered people, assaulted people, caused multiple deaths directly or indirectly and actively allowed deaths that could have been prevented, then it would not be particularly out of character (at that point) to commit sexual assault. The depression-driven-suicide was mentioned to remind people just how badly damaged his psyche was at that point in the timeline/movie. (The hyperbole bit is a different issue, I agree with you on that one. I don't think that sexual assault definitely happened, he's reaching there.)
@martinfrost4292
@martinfrost4292 6 жыл бұрын
I can't think of an instance where he actively allowed deaths, there is the old man who he initially ignores as an example of everyday hubris and mans inhumanity to man, later tries to save but eventually realises he cannot in a realisation that he is not omnipotent (which I can't help seeing as a deference to the religious audience share), other than that nothing. He definitely didn't murder anyone. But mainly I'll admit I'm troubled because there is still a subsumed association between mental health issues and the worst of human behaviour here which is out of character for Cracked, Daniel usually does better.

Disagree by default of conjecture based on type-casting. I've not seen her do anything but play the same character. Which is arguably telling in a lot of cases (like Reese Witherspoon, Zooey Deschanel, etc.), but she was never terrible.

unstoppableExodia-Because she met a requirement of rom-com movies where the female lead has to be good looking, but not extremely hot as to threaten the female viewers of the movie. Think of every even moderately successful (from a money making perspective) rom-com and who the lead female character was played by. They are all good looking but not extremely hot. Women instinctively hate extremely hot women because the hot woman will snatch up the best men. The good-looking woman lead in a rom-com is a surrogate for the females watching the movie, so they have to identify with the lead and think "If she can get the super-hunk guy, why can't I?" Andie MacDowell is in the sweet spot of being good looking without alienating the female target audience. This is also why men can't stand rom-coms. They think the guy is settling.
