I think having an open water attraction, no matter the quality, acts as a nice ambient sound feature as well as offering a nice contrast against all the steel and concrete of the rest of the park, especially Tomorrowland. I think things would feel very flat without the lagoon.

I only rode the subs once in 2019 and I really enjoyed it, but yes, loading and unloading, claustrophobia, tiny stairs make it difficult to get in and out. I wish they could re-design the subs to do easier load/unload. Also telling that when Disney decided to open a 20K Leagues ride at DisneySea, they made it...not underwater at all, just SEEMS like you're underwater.

20 000 Leagues at Tokyo is amazing! It's a REALLY convincing illusion (except the end lacks a scene where you get the feeling of surfacing, the transition isn't quite as convincing as the 'diving' sequence). I think having a ride like that, but keeping the lagoon outside the show building, would work.

As a business owner, I can tell you that in big decisions like these, the bottom line is the bottom line. It’s always ultimately a matter of dollars no matter what anyone else says. The reason the subs are still there is because it’s less expensive than removing them. They could make the lagoon non-functional for the subs, like Disneyland before and also Walt Disney World. Just a waterway to look at, without functioning sub vehicles. But as others have said, the sub lagoon is so integrated into that huge chunk of tomorrowland, involving the monorail track, the Autopia cars, the old People Mover track, that tearing it out would require prolonged closure of Autopia and the monorail. Look how long the Walt Disney World railroad has been down just because it runs across the entrance to the new Tron roller coaster Construction site. In the bigger sense, it means that Disney does not know what they want to do with Tomorrowland. They’re not gonna invest all that time and money into closing the ride, to have to totally redo Autopia, suspend monorail service, Finally deal with the people mover track and rip it out,and not tackle the rest of the land. Because it involves three or more projects in one, we can read between the lines and know that there is no new version of tomorrowland yet that is ready for Disneyland, therefore in the big picture it’s just easier to keep the subs running. And, as other have said, it is a big nostalgia thing as Walt Disney himself had influence and its creation and rode the subs himself. Ripping it out would probably cause outrage even bigger than when we lost Mr. Toads wild ride in Florida.

I really wish Disneyland would add a new e ticket ride to the other side of the park (Adventureland, frontierland) to distract crowds away from Tomorrowland and then completely redo it. I can't see it happening until like the park's 75th anniversary or something though

Chapek inherited Avengers Campus and New Toon Town. Those projects were started under Bob Iger's watch. Remember, Chapek has gone on record as saying, just like Eisner, that people aren't being charged ENOUGH for the parks. THAT, is troubling if you ask me. We'll have to see what happens when the Iger projects run out, but if the plants around WDW Haunted Mansion are any indication, the parks may see a lot of run down and soon. Enough staff on hand or not.

Reminds me of the rather lax maintenance culture that got exposed when Big Thunder had its fatal accident years ago and ever since the locomotives have had a giant gaping hole on the bottom where a set of faux-driver wheels should be. However, watching Disney slowly implode due to its own size and broken pricing structure while its competitors just need to keep staying the course is quite satisfying.

There is an obvious way to improve the subs. BOARDING GROUPS. Get rid of the line completely and install an interactive play queue. @@Larkinfon , agreed on boarding groups and engaging the line, but Disney by its name requires more than knobs and wheels. Recall Spacestation 220's circular "window" lookin up? Imagine the enclosed boarding room looking down on a circular window into the ocean (technically, a circular hole with a tv screen at the bottom, overlayed with water). The boarding room "descends" underwater towards a deep sea submarine station, passing interesting reefs & animals along the way. It could be 1-minutes, it could be 10-minutes. The cost is relatively cheap yet the feeling would be immersive Disney-magic.

Maintenance people hate these types of rides due to the fact that 1) most everything that needs to be fixed is under water, 2) the high levels of chlorine in the water causes rapid paint loss and corrosion of animatronics. So unlike all the other rides, every year they have to drain the lake and overhaul the entire thing. It's the primary reason Nemo's sister ride -20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - was shut down at Disney World in the 90s.

I think they’ll hit it when they get around to doing a complete retheme of Tomorrowland. I think Autopia and Nemo subs will likely go away or be completely rethought. This would give them the opportunity to rework both rides (including doing work on the monorail). I would like to see a purpose built version of the rocket rod. A lot of the issues that ride had was as a result of trying to use the people move infrastructure for something it was never designed to handle. Overall I just think Tomorrowland needs a complete and total reboot and reimagining; not a simple coat of paint. Definitely enjoyed the Solar Punk take you had!

Indeed! It's absolutely unique. Tokyo DisneySea may have a fake version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea that looks really cool and tells its own story, but the original Submarine Voyage at Disneyland operates in the water. It's a one of a kind for Disney and Walt, himself, took so much pride in its creation. Today, Disney would stick a film in a simulator and call it a day. But, back in the 1960s, Walt and his team of Imagineers physically took guests on a "submarine" journey. It's worth the expense of preservation because there is no other like it.

i prefer the classic Submarine Voyage to the Finding Nemo version--it was one of my favorite rides as a kid, along with Jungle Cruise, (the roller coasters were a bit too intense for me at that age) and the current one seems a little too hokey and "topical", so to speak, whereas the original had more of a timeless feel to it. there's also an immersion-breaking bit with the naval mines and anglerfish where the light of the "explosions" lets you see the back of the showroom, especially the corner where the wall turns into the ceiling, while there wasn't a problem with the original. personally, i'd change it "back" to the original version with updated tech, MAYBE keeping some of the screens but not overusing them, but adding some items and scenes from basically every Disney movie that has some underwater scenes, including some Finding Nemo scenes, even "crossing over" with some other attractions such as the graveyard of ships alluding to Pirates of the Caribbean. maybe have the Heart of Tefiti pulsing with light somewhere. even Atlantis: The Lost Empire could work--the scare-factor of the deep ocean scene could be reworked to use the Leviathan instead, for example.

@@R.444- i agree with the Pixar Pier sentiment, especially since that's ultimately just a cosmetic change rather than something "actually" new. i think those should be spread around a bit more. off the top of my head, i could see the cast of _Inside Out_ being worked into a Tomorrowland or Epcot attraction with them as hosts for a tour of the human body or something, or maybe they show up as a brief joke in a hypothetical Ant-Man ride, like the riders have shrunken so far that they end up in someone's thought processes and the emotions and Ant-Man are mutually confused. i could also buy _Incredibles_ being meshed with Avengers campus--it's not like the Disney parks haven't shied away from crossovers before (Mr. Toad selling his mansion to Owl, for example). i've particularly thought recently that maybe the _Nightmare Before Christmas_ takeover of the Haunted Mansion could be balanced a little by splitting the overlay period in two with the first half being themed more around _Coco_ while Jack and company still get the actual timeframe of Christmas

From what I have heard is once they redo Tomorrowland the only things that will survive is Spacemountain, Monorail, and the train station. Since the show building for the subs was built beyond bomb shelter strength they been stumped on how to tackle that portion of the land since a portion of that space that makes up the subs and Autotopia will become part of Fantasyland for a expansion. Funny thing is it was during a peoplemover track inspection to see if they could repair/remove the track along with start to get ideas on what to do with the land that the engineer suggested to level the land and rebuild from scratch instead of trying to repair and repurpous the individual spaces. The Star Wars Launch Bay building foot print is large enough to house a second Spacemountain so there are options of how to keep the number of E ticket attractions in the land when they reopen the land without bringing back the Subs. They could easily keep the lagoon and have fountain and lights inside so to not effect the interconnected waterways in the park while making it like the world of color body of water so guests could walk all the way around it since currently many guests are unable to find the train station due to the bottleneck path by Autotopia, allow better access to the Monorail station without having to mess with the current supports, and since if they level the whole land it will mean they can redesign where Pixie Hollow, Buzz, and Tomorrowland Terrace currently is into something better that fits into the new theme of the land. Now for the timing for the remodle could have been placed on hold until they know the fate for the resort expansion plans since in the plans they have a whole land based around Tron but if they don't get the OK for the expansion they could easily move the plan for the attraction to Tomorrowland since it's still a futuristic theme that would blend nicely with Spacemountain and the Monorail.

I love the subs, in all forms. They are a Disneyland staple. Grateful to have ridden it in the 90’s and now love the Nemo overlay. It’s technology and experience is something truly unique. I also think it’s absolutely captivating to children under 12. As a mommy now, it’s the one ride I can’t wait to take my 2 year old daughter on next year. She just got into Nemo and I think this is a great way to introduce her to sea life. ✨

I probably started riding the subs in 1966 or so, and to a little boy of 3 this was the coolest ride ever. I got my own porthole and AC vent! Is there anything else like it? Personally, getting tired of just another roller coaster. They are all the same. You’ll understand as you get older and search your memories for happy thoughts from your childhood. Simple as that.

My first ride on the subs was in 1963 when I was 3 years old and it was pretty magical to me back then. I miss the the original with the graveyard of ships, polar icecap and volcanic activity in Atlantis. Since it was converted to Finding Nemo it does nothing for me. Disneyland has changed so much that I don't feel the connection on the same level as I did back then. I can enjoy it, but it doesn't have that "magic" or sense of wonder for me anymore.

I went on the submarines kinda recently (right before the shutdown) for the first time since I was little so it had probably been like 20 years, long before the finding Nemo overlay. It’s cute BUT! they could replace it with a living with the sea omnimover sort of thing. Keep the finding Nemo references, make it modern with the screens maybe even motion capture like the secret life of pet ride system, and it just leads to an educational marine area. It can showcase sea exploration technology to make it Tomorrowland themed but those submarines have to go!!!

I could see them doing a continuous loading system going off similar to the Haunted Mansion so it's not such a PITA to load/unload/see. Have the loading area above the the water (obviously) and as you go down it lowers into a "fish bowl" which is your personal sub to see everything.

I love walking by the Matterhorn and seeing the lagoon especially with how it glows at night and I like seeing the view going over it in the Monorail. As a Finding Nemo Sub rider, I remember waiting 1 1/2 hrs in line as a kid when it first opened (probably longer tbh), but once on the ride I loved the submarine ride aspect. The storyline with Nemo was eh, but the diving effects, being in this dimly-lit underwater cabin, and seeing the special effects were really cool (especially at night). As an adult now: The ride is still cool, but less so because of poor air filtration, a tight, compact cabin, and the monotonous feeling of going the same speed the whole time while not knowing how long till the end. I don't think Disney needs to remove the lagoon but I do think they can come up with something better in that spot. Maybe a walkway exploration experience, such as the Artic Adventure in SeaWorld (I know the Lagoon is waaaay smaller but a similar idea would be cool).

When I was growing up the Submarine Voyage was one of my favorite attractions. No trip to Disneyland was complete without a ride in the subs. But it has now been almost two and a half decades since I have ridden. Heck, it's been 17 years since I last visited Disneyland and I have never even set foot inside DCA (despite having worked on new attractions for both parks). It simply hasn't worked out for me to go. So I have yet to experience the Finding Nemo version of the Submarine Voyage in person. Even so, I still have a deep fondness for the attraction and would love to see it revamped with a new science fiction narrative to fit better with the theme of Tomorrowland. Actually, I would like to see Tomorrowland revamped and restored to the 1967 design motif and have the land embrace retrofuturism which would keep it from ever becoming "outdated". The big problem with retheming/renovating the Submarine Voyage is that anything that makes it new again will draw big crowds and the attraction simply can't process big crowds in a timely manner. Despite this unfortunate conundrum I still think it is worth doing. The Subs need to stay for esthetic reasons more than purely entertainment reasons. And no other Disney Park has something comparable. Yes, Tokyo Disney Sea has its 20,000 Leagues attraction, but its dry-for-wet design doesn't hold a candle to really being underwater. Excellent video. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

Thank God you're not an Imagineer or in a position of authority at Disneyland. I don't understand how an alleged Disney fan and admirer of Walt Disney would advocate for the removal of a classic Disneyland attraction, particularly one that Walt was so proud of that he wanted to show it off to a Communist world leader. Thank goodness, Disneyland management has learned from its shortsightedness in the closure of the PeopleMover (another of Walt's classics) and the removal of the Skyway. All three Tomorrowland attractions added so much kinetic energy to that land. I wish I could have personally experienced it in its hay day. And I know that I would not at all be satisfied if the monorail were the only remaining attraction in Tomorrowland to provide kinetics to the landscape. You dismiss the Subs as an outdated technology of the 1960s, but submarines are still relatively inaccessible to the general population, unlike the automobile and the interstate freeway system represented in Autopia. Rather than advocating for the removal of the Subs (and wishing for another clone of the TRON Lightcycle Power Run), why not appreciate the unique (water based) submarine attraction that exists and wish for its "plusing?" Rather than applying a non-Tomorrow based IP that Tony Baxter used as a quick fix to save the attraction, why not consider a whole new backstory unrelated to any cinematic storyline? The Society of Explorers and Adventurers is timeless. The organization dates back to the Renaissance in Fortress Explorations at Tokyo DisneySea. They made their public debut during the height of the British Empire in the Adventurers Club at Pleasure Island. Mary Oceaneer, a late 19th century member of SEA has a presence at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon as well as aboard the Disney Magic cruise ship. Glacier Bay was a proposed SEA arctic outpost for Hong Kong Disneyland. Like Disneyland Paris' Discoveryland and Tokyo DisneySea's Port Discovery, it would have been Steampunk in style to reflect its time period. Why not represent SEA in the future? Why not offer guests the opportunity to join SEA in an expedition to explore the wonders of the oceans? Perhaps the objective of the journey is to take guests to Glacier Bay, only to scuttle those plans after encountering a newly discovered sea creature in the depths of the Artic Sea. (If not Glacier Bay, it could easily be a journey to SeaBase Alpha or an underwater city of the future.) The Subs may have a low throughput and that one area of Tomorrowland may be congested with the queues for the Subs, Autopia and the Monorail all originating next to each other, but that could also be addressed with the removal of Autopia, the truly outdated attraction of Tomorrowland. Autopia should be replaced with something other than automobliles. Autopia occupies some valuable real estate atop the submarine show building, but especially in its load/unload area between the Subs, the Tomorrowland Train Station and the former Carousel of Progress building. Tomorrowland doesn't need a clone of TRON, especially if it has to be scaled down in such that it's as inferior to the original as Magic Kingdom's Pirates is inferior to the Disneyland original. Tomorrowland needs some imagination and adventure and an optimistic view into the future. TRON might be "pretty and new," in terms of attraction, but the realm of TRON is pretty bleak.

I remember riding it when the attraction first opened, and I personally thought it was interesting. I believe I was around 5-6 and I kinda figured out how they made you believe you were actually diving down. I think with our modern technology today, we could make a way cooler marine life kind of ride. Although I hate to say it, the Finding Nemo or Dory idea for this attraction is dead. Finding Dory had no impact and is not really relevant. Like how the Matterhorn has the Abominable Snowman, I think the submarine voyage should look for a creature of fantasy, like the giant squid or something. I think that would catch a lot of peoples attention and it could maybe work.

Honesty this needs to be re-themed back to 20,000 Leagues. The whole appeal of that incarnation of the ride was the narrative and timeless feel that the Finding Nemo iteration doesn’t have. It also felt like there was a better use of theming that made the experience more unique and made it cool to ride in a submarine. I know you’re not technically underwater, but who wouldn’t want to say they rode in a submarine? Anyway I think that the ride should stay but bring back 20,000 Leagues to appease older fans and make for a fun experience for younger fans.

Obviously it was a success and laid the groundwork for the much nicer expansion in Tokyo Disneyland. But there's nothing else like the submarines left. Even the amazing 20,000 leagues at DisneySea isn't really comparable. And yes, it's horrifically inefficient in terms of capacity. The subs are super unique an I remember riding them when I was a little kid in the 70's, it was pure magic. Nothing else in the park has that kind of immersion honestly. With the exception of rise or the monorail, think about the money and investment in those ride vehicles its kind of amazing. I dislike the nemo theming, its not tomorrowland, it puts it in the past or maybe fantasyland. They should retheme them for undersea futurism like they had in epcot, maybe let you get out in an undersea station or something, now that would be a cool retheme and be futuristic. They need to let the parks theming drive the studios not vice versa like with adventureland. It should stir the imagination, not let you just experience a movie again. That gets boring fast, immortal attractions like potc or Haunted Mansion are draws in themselves and inspire movie franchises, that's what should happen with this attraction not try to fit a movie property to it.
