A new workplace survey by Engine Insights for Smartsheet reveals that working from home as a result of COVID-19 is difficult for all workers, but none more than Generation-Z and Millennials. In fact, despite being digital natives, fully 95% of Gen-Z workers and 93% of Millennial workers admit they’re having a tough time with the transition to working remotely.
Three-fourths of the U.S. workforce feels less connected than they did before the COVID-19 pandemic, reports Smartsheet, with notably higher numbers for Gen-Z (82%) and Millennials (81%). Moreover, since they started working from home, 60% of American workers feel less informed about what’s going on within their company. But, here again, younger workers reflect higher numbers, with 74% of Gen-Zers and 66% of Millennials, compared to just 53% and 50% of Gen-Xers and Boomers, respectively.

No more commute. I can use that time to properly eat breakfast and work longer. This is truly a win-win for most. If I was a middle manager who's job it is to create busy work/give meaningless tasks, I'd be terrified in these times.

That part! I’m Gen X, but over a year into this, the old guard (my age & up) are still refusing to do anything virtually. They want everyone back in the office & under their watchful eye so bad they can taste it. We’d JUST rolled out Office365, Teams, all kinds of collaboration tools. Everyone over 45 and in charge of people: “NOPE! Don’t wanna learn it! Want to go back to woooork! Whaaaah!” When you don’t REALLY have anything to do but micromanage others, you either way overdo it on metrics, or you want to get back to “management by walking around & hanging over people’s desks all day.”

That’s what you think, your still living under the notion that work finishes at 5 pm or 2:30 pm so I can pick up the kids from school. Wonderful you have this flexibility now the employees who work from home when they go to the office cannot even motivate themselves to do a full 8 hours. They’re struggling to even do 6 hours and one day a week. That should mean your not working from home & the employer expects answers and responses any time of the day or week. So you want to work from the office you get the luxury of turning your computer off at 5 pm. Enjoy the weekend. The worker who wants to sit in there pyjamas in bed responding to an email will be expected to be on call 100% of the time. If your not simple locked out & your job is off shored to Africa or India. Congratulations to your idea of working from home. The idea of working from home is going to be reserved for upper level management. They’re going to enjoy the true fruits of this.

Gen Y and Gen Z are also social natives who flourish in the company of others. More so than Gen Y, who are also digital natives, Gen Y and Gen Z crave social contact and are more likely to feel stifled or "cooped up" when working alone. Working from coffee shops and co-working spaces are natural behavioral patterns for X's and Z's.

There are no cons to working from home, it wasn't tough for me to transition to this at all, I absolutely love it! When I had to commute to a shitty job in a call center I did everything I could to avoid being there, and had a smaller paycheck due to lost time. Now I have a great job and no commute, and I haven't called out sick even once in the 7 months I've been doing this.

Isn’t it awesome? Now perhaps it is because I don’t have kids running around or constant interruptions, but working from home for at least 2 or 3 days a week for this past year has been great. No more excuses from the employer on why they couldn’t POSSIBLY let people work from home. But now, as the pandemic winds down (at least they think/say it is), the push to get everyone back into their open-air cells, aka cubicles, is ramping up. And the real shame is that they’ve convinced a lot of people that they’re incapable of providing their own structure and discipline in their work lives, and MUST have “leadership” to guide them. Sorry, I don’t buy it. If you’re a technical professional, you absolutely don’t need guidance from a supervisor every day. They just need to justify their own existence.

Who are these people that FORBES and CNBC interview!? What I am gathering is this indirect assumption that new "WFHers" are struggling with this change. Set goals. Meet them. As long as the job gets done and met by the deadline...then what is the problem? There is Microsoft Teams, SLACK, Google Meet etc... the resources are there if the company provides the right software and task management systems to succeed.

This information applies whether you are sitting in the actual office or working from home. I'm working from home now temporarily and honestly my boss didn't communicate with me while in the actual office. She's more of the mindset to talk like it's after 5 o'clock and not 9 am so if it's not about golf or darts it's not a valuable conversation topic to her. Now at home, I still don't speak to her, only email my hours daily where she is forced, due to her boss, to see each employees actual work contribution. I know once we return to the office this will fade and the glory of darts and golf will begin again. If you have a disinterested boss, you could share an office with that person and still not know what is going on in the office.

I definitely prefer working from home. I get to start and finish work earlier if I have a lot on without losing time to commuting, so my output is greater than ever which helps reduce my work-induced stress. I also can choose who I communicate with often at work which also reduces stress as I dont like office small talk. My quality of life has improved which I'm sure is ultimately better for business.

Notice how the number 1 complaint for in office work is COMMUTE!! The work day is far too long with commuting added on to it, if the work day was only 5 or even 6 hours instead of 9 hours (disgusting) then I'd actually prefer to work in the office (also if I had my own desk/cubicle, not a crappy 'hot desk'!!)

Discipline for productivity? I figured that as long as I maintain my output and results, nothing else should really matter. I really don’t need to be in an office for 8 hours to get my work done, I can actually do it in half the time. Now that we’re working from home u BETTER BELIEVE I’m taking full advantage of that. 🤣🤣

Yea but your being paid to do a full day not half day… most demanding jobs will give you more work.. I wouldn’t wanna work in a job knowing a mc Donald’s worker works harder than me. People pass that off as being productive but in reality your not being given enough work and a business could just get rid of your colleague, save money, and give you his work. Sorry but it’s not Soviet Russia and graduates are a dime a dozen.

The solution is simple ask the online game industry how to do it. Just put cctv and speakers in site or headsets to workers while the branch manager monitor and quality control monitor them from far away. Its nonsense to use video conferencing just use normal chat, broadcast, world chat and private message like how almost every online game has. Workers dont need to look at managers, while managers only need to see them working not their face. Working at home needs a certain mindset and discipline in lifestyle.
