You neglected to mention the biggest advantage, Pixels Per Duck. If reach is a factor, as it often is with wildlife and birds, the R7 offers 32MP on a crop sensor, whereas the R6 is only 20.1MP and, in the equivalent crop mode, only offers around 7.8MP. The R7 thus gives you four times as many Pixels Per Duck :)

The R7 SHOULD be the logical camera to go to when shooting wildlife, but my experience so far suggest that is not that simple. The benefits of having a crop sensor camera are two-fold: 1. The smaller sensor produces a smaller field of capture, resulting in an image that when blown up to a size equal to that of a FF unit appears to be magnified as the subject fills more of the frame compared to a FF unit with the same lens. This has disadvantages when using wide-angle lenses, but benefits in terms of what appears to be a magnification effect with telephoto lenses. 2. Pixel density with a crop sensor body. Up to a certain point, a crop sensor may render more pixel per sq. mm, compared to an equal FF unit which may give benefits. The king of Canon APS-C bodies was the venerable 7DII, and one would expect that the R7 would be a successor to that unit. It's not. It's a replacement for the 90D, which is designed for a different market. So, not a pro-level body but one aimed at more at enthusiasts or consumers. The R7 does inherit the brilliant focusing system of the R3, which is outstanding. However, there are things that I find less encouraging. As you mentioned the shutter - 30 FPS on electronic sounds impressive - but it has MASSIVE shutter lag at that rate, which will render SERIOUS issues with distortion for wildlife and sports enthusiasts. Pity, since the electronic shutter is silent: unlike the mechanical shutter that does not show that effect, but sounds like a tinker's cart. However, unlike the electronic shutter, at least it doesn't fill the buffer in about 1.2 secs of RAW shooting! Other issues for consideration. It is not fully weather-sealed (for some folks that is an issue as we can't all pack up and go home when the weather turns to custard), it has no battery grip and that's a shame as the grip not only provides instant access to the extra battery capacity, but provides controls for portrait-mode shooting, and helps balance the super light body when using heavier telephoto lenses - bringing the camera C of G back towards the body. I shoot with R5 and R6 units, and I was sincerely looking forward to the R7 as a replacement for my 7DII unit, but I shall have to wait for another model. This IS a good entry-mid level camera for those looking for an economical entry into Canon's MILC range, but it's mis-named - perhaps they should have called it the R70...

Thank you Rob for this video. I was lucky enough to get my hand on an R7 the day they were out in Canada. I already own an R6 and my R7 will be used alongside my R6 for clients shoots as well as being a good backup camera. So far I did some tests in low light and high ISO to validate the presence and the amount of noise. From 800 ISO and up, there is more noise than on the R6, which is quite understandable. At least I know the R6 can handle those low light situations if need be. For the R7, Topaz DeNoise AI does a good job on RAW files when there is too much noise.

Hi Rob, thanks for your excellent videos! I look forward to your impressions when you will have had the chance to test the R7! I received mine a few days ago and so far it seems perfect for my intended use as a second camera to complement my R5 and have the 1.6X crop for wildlife . The autofocus is fast and accurate and the IQ is excellent. The noise on correctly exposed files seems to be only a bit more than with the R5 (noisier than the R6). Full Raw files are 35-40 Mb and in H+ if you just keep your finger on the shutter you will soon fill the buffer. Shooting with intermittent short bursts at 15fps (still faster than my old 1DX!) works fine for me. Using the fastest writing V90 cards helps. You can set the camera to make a sound when shooting in electronic. This gives better control and avoids taking loads of unwanted shots. (saving some buffer). Overall I think it is great value for money...

Hi Rob, watched this video before I went out to do some sports photography. I live in South Australia so the main winter sport is Australian Rules Football the game has 4 quarters of any where between 25 and 30 minutes each (extra time is added for stoppages) the size of the ground is about the size of a large cricket oval eg MCG or Adelaide Oval. There 36 players (18 per side) plus umpires on the field. I used my Canon R6 with a sigma 150 to 500 lense. You mentioned about the battery life. I thought I would share my experience my personal preference is to shoot both Jpeg and Raw. I had no issues with buffering or over heating ( I did a lot of burst shooting. In total I shot 1172 Jpegs and 1172 Raw images and the battery did not require changing Thanks for your channel Glyn - now to short through 1172 photos

I've been using the r7 for the last week and i can say that the buffer can be hit pretty quick when set for 30 fps. I have been either shooting short bursts or just using the 15 fps for the majority. The autofocus is on point. I even have the case study on auto and it is fast and sticky to the subjects (birds). It is worth it. The ability to use my rf lenses with the crop is awesome. The internal crop costs me megapixels on my r6/r5 and the r7 does not. I love it for birding.

I use my R6 with my 600mm II lens and I love it. Even with the TC it does a good job. Would you say the AF is similar? Let’s say I stick with mechanical shutter. You think it’s just as good as the R6? I thought about moving my R6 to my landscape portrait work but don’t want to bother if it’s hindered. Thanks!
@seantheo
@seantheo 2 жыл бұрын
@@gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife they are similar enough. I think that the r7 seems to stay with the subjects easier. I'm not sure what is different other than it inherited it's system from the r3. It has subject detect which just shows what the camera is thinking you want to lock onto which is helpful with multiple birds.... all that being said the low light ability of the r6 is way better. I use my r6 for any freelance work I've done because if this. If I had a 600mm f4 I would choose that with teleconverters over the r7 because if the noisy lowlight performance.... basically the autofocus is slightly improved but the handicap is that with higher iso we may be losing details that we want for birding if it isn't a bright day.
@gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife
@gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife 2 жыл бұрын
@@seantheo thanks, that helps a lot. One thing I will say is the R6 with my 600mm is very strange. For instance, it can sometimes struggle to focus on slow moving shorebirds walking with the 2x tc while I was shocked when I was handholding my 600 with the 2x, it focused very well on the flying skimmers. I think the issue was the shorebirds were against the gray sand on the ground, whereas the skimmers were black and white with the shore and sky behind them. I noticed this also when I photographed black and white dogs, for some reason those colors are easy to lock on. So many combinations is hard to judge an AF system I realize. I did also pick up a 100-500L and I definitely feel the direct RF connection is better AF on the R6. And of course that makes sense. In the future I will probably sell my big 600mm and get the 800mm f5.6. But other than the light weight, it’s not magnificently better, as the 600mm II image quality is unmatched really. I didn’t know the R3 had the same AF as the R7. I guess as long as the battery power is enough to not cause issues. I would like to see if you use a battery grip with the R7 if it helps AF. It might!

@@gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife yeah I have the 100-500mm and it is amazing! It is always my go too. Yeah it "inherited" the r3 auto focus... so it doesn't have all of it but enough to be really helpful. You can adjust zone sizes too! I can see it being extremely helpful.... I usually go with the 1.4x cause I have noticed it doesn't slow the af down as much as the 2x... one thing that is awesome about the r7 is that the 600 & 800 f11 lenses have a bigger af area with the crop sensor which will make BIF so much easier to track than on the full frame. I'll be sticking to that combo with those lenses as long as the lighting is good and I am still saving for the 400 f2.8 or 600 f4... do you think that the rf400 2.8 will be good with the teleconverters or saving longer for the rf600 someday? I figured that the 400 would be the same apertures w/ teleconverters as the 600 & 800 rf lenses. Maybe af will be a tad slower but it would work out the same reach.

I am just a hobbyist and have a GH5. Its been a great camera and enjoyed collecting lenses and gear. I've become one with the GH5 manual focus but always hear how great the canon gear is. I wanted to wait for a camera that could do 4K (without overheating) but also have a larger sensor for a step up in photographs. In my collection is a sigma 18-35 that was used with the GH5 on a speed booster and since that lens was natively for aps-c I decided the R7 having that style sensor meant I at least had an extra lens that could move forward with me (with the adapter). The price point of the camera body made jumping platforms a little easier to dip a toe in the water. I've only had the R7 for a few days but I have done comparisons and found that the photos were slightly better than my gh5 once you pixel peep and the autofocus is pretty amazing. The GH5 in my opinion has the better menu system but I'm sure after I have had more time with the canon system it will be less frustrating. So in summary I was looking to take my micro 4/3 experience and complete it with better autofocus and maybe a little better low light without breaking the bank. Many of the reviews are comparing the R7 to higher end cameras but seems many do not address those who are 'upgrading' from 4/3.

I have and R6 and I ordered an R7. Two different cameras for different situations. The R7 is a great RF lens extender and you don’t lose a stop. The R7 has a better focusing system for subjects like birds in flight. It also shoots 30 frames per second. The R7 has extended debt of field which is a plus for shooting macro. When the light gets low the R6 can take over and do a great job. Also the R6 is a jack of trades. A great all around performer.

I currently use two R6 bodies. I’m considering trading/selling one to replace with R7. For me I can make use of the extra reach and megapixels with the RF100-500. And I have had situations where the 30 minute record limit effects my ability to capture events. (I did work around it using a 2 camera setup). I’m also curious about the 6k down sample of the R7. And as an R6 user I have suffered a bit of overheating. Never a full shutdown but it has made me nervous and actually prompted me to get a second body.

I am using my R7 for birds. I’ve been using the R6 for 15 or 16 months. I think if I had to choose one it would be the R7. It’s difficult to add reach without going to a much larger and more expensive lens. My RF 100-500mm is 800mm equivalent. I use my R6 with the grip and the since getting the R7 I have appreciated the lighter setup. I recorded a video a few nights ago in our kitchen. A 4K Fine video at 24fps ran for 2hrs 14minutes. Here in central Texas my R6 recently overheated while out shooting birds. I wasn’t shooting video but it was over 100 degrees Fahrenheit here and I was in the sun much of the time. It didn’t stop shooting photos but it flashed the red overheating warning constantly. I have been using the R7 for a week in similar heat with no issues. Rolling shutter is an issue. I have not had any problem with the noise. I use noise reduction in my normal workflow so it isn’t an issue. Having much many more megapixels on the birds is really a big positive. I would have preferred a better sensor, EVF, and buffer but none of those things are deal breakers. I am not a professional and 90% of my shooting is birds so I may sell the R6 on to the next person. If I were a wedding photographer I would keep it.

I've been using the R6 and love it for its eye-autofocus and its low light performance. The 20 mp sensor, however, is really not great for bird photography where you need to crop quite a bit. I did some math and it seems that the R7 will put 4x the number of pixels on an object (like a bird) than with the R6, assuming the same lens. This should help with quality of cropped images. I've also read that the F11 lenses have a wider autofocus zone in the R7 than in the R6. I'm seriously looking at the R7 for birding.

i was about to say the same, with wildlife the R7 is about dumping your biggest lens on it and getting the most pixels on target, only down side to that at the moment is the 150-600mm sigma ihas pulsing issues on auto focus so until sigm work out a fix for that its a no atm on the R7 Daude Paton has tested this combo on his channel and mentions the af servo pulsing along with sigma saying that yes the lens is not comparable with the RF servo, and i thik that is on the R6 and R5 as well but i not totally sure there

So my question is, I have an R5 and 5DIV. Looking to sell my 5DIV and picking up an R6 or R7. I've realized after shooting with the R5, with the EVF, I can see the subject so much better. I do good bit of work in auditoriums, where lighting is low, except for the stage which is super bright. Like the benefits of each, R6 would be another FF, however the R7 has some benefits too. I'm not too worried about the noise of the R7, DeepPrime is out and supports the R7. I've downloaded the Polin and Wegner files and processed, the R7 files are much improved with DXO DP.

I bought the R7, I bought it for it's 15 fps mechanical shutter. 30 fps has a bit of rolling shutter issue as can be expected with electronic shutters and fast moving subjects. Overheating is not going to be a problem for me, in my opinion it's one of those issues used to create controversy.

I just got the R7 to compliment my R6. And I found tha Af on the R7 to be better than my R6. I went out with the R6+R 100-400 f5.6-8 the af kept jumping around and I had to use flexible spot to capture the subject. Then I took the R7 when I got it also with the Rf 100-400 f5.6-8 and I could use wide area af and it would find the subject eith no issues. Plus the 32mp come handy when you have to crop a little without losing to much quality.

The 7D2 wasn’t enough of an upgrade for me, the 90D AF wasn’t for my needs either so early this year I caved in and got an R6. i went exaclty in that route, i have the older version of the 500 f4 and is a shame that fps dont go to spec, on the other hand, focus accuracy totally compensates for the lackluster 10fps, at the end of the day i have much more keepers. The 90D is basically collecting dust, never liked the autofocus system nor the results at high ISO, it can make a nice video camera beeing on par with the R6 as far as specs go

I'm currently using the R7 alongside the R6 and if I had to choose between them, as a wildlife photographer, I would choose the R6. I got the R7 to complement the R6 and use it where it has the advantage, but the R6 has many advantages over it. Low light, there's no competition although those files you downloaded made the R7 seem much worse than it is. 30fps has limited use if you can only shoot for a few seconds and I've quickly found I prefer 15fps anyway. Rolling shutter is much better on the R6. The main reason for getting the R7 for me as a wildlife photographer, was the crop sensor reach. I've yet to really get to grips on the focusing system on the R7 to see if it's as good or better than the R6, but the R6 is already fantastic.

I pre ordered it on the 25th May still no deliveries at my dealer Watford SRS. It's spec is good for wildlife/birders who want a lot more pixels in the crop. About the same or a little bit more pixel density than a M4/3 camera so if the light is bad there gonna be noise I think for me 1600 ISO I'm critical about my 7DmkII this will be even worse. If you're in the UK those cheap Canon F11 lenses plus this camera won't be a great idea only in the few weeks of summer we get. I wouldn't have minded paying a bit more for a better EVF and a stacked sensor like the Fuji and Olympus have just recently. If I didn't have Canon lenses I think I might have gone for a OM-1. Canon are very slow at sensor development unlike Sony who supply everyone else.

The R7 is about dumping your biggest lens on it and getting the most pixels on target, only down side to that at the moment is the 150-600mm sigma i has pulsing issues on auto focus so until sigma work out a fix for that its a no atm on the R7 Daude Paton has tested this combo on his channel and mentions the af servo pulsing along with sigma saying that yes the lens is not comparable with the RF servo, and i thik that is on the R6 and R5 as well but i not totally sure there. also for me the R7 seems like its a tester crop to see how people like it, there are things not present on the R7 that should have been like the BSI sensor and quad pixel af

Why would I buy an R7 instead of an R6? - It's $1000 cheaper. - R7 is APS-C, ideal for telephoto work. - R7 has faster frame rates for action. - R7 has slightly better AF. - R7 is 32.5MP vs R6's 20MP. - R7 gets nearly 2X shots per charge. Why would I buy an R6 instead of R7? - R6 is full frame, better wide angle. - R6 has better EVF. - R6 has higher usable ISO. - R6 is better in low light. - R6 can be fitted with battery grip. Concerns about one or the other or both: - The electronic shutter on both are susceptible to rolling shutter issues. Chelsea and Tony Northrup felt the R7's 30 fps e-shutter was unusable for birds in flight. This will also limit it's usefulness for sports. - Further, the "pre-shot" feature that captures 15 frames BEFORE you pressed the shutter, which would be most useful for fast action, reportedly only works with the e-shutter. - Can't say about the R6, but apparently the R7's buffer fills awfully quickly and can be slow to clear. Shooting RAW you would get just a couple seconds with the mechanical shutter and about 1 sec with the e-shutter. The Northrups demonstrated this (not my favorite reviewers, but we take what we can get at this point). - Another KZfaqr I corresponded with got 3000 shots out of his R7 battery over a 4 or 5 hour shoot. His daughter got over 4000 on a 2nd camera. They were "birding", mostly perched, some BIF. I imagine they were both doing a lot of bursts at max speed to rack up so many shots so fast (as most of us would do first time out with such a camera😎) - Durability? Canon hasn't told us how many shutter actuations we can expect with R7. They say it's comparable to build of 90D in other ways, and that camera is rated to do 120,000 clicks. The 7D Mark II is rated to do 200,000. Best guess, R7 is somewhere in that range. But shooting a lot at 15 fps (or 30 fps), the "mileage" will rack up pretty fast! EDIT: In the days since I posted the above response I've seen more reviews and corresponded with a couple R7 users who report little problem with the R7 and rolling shutter shooting birds and wildlife. There can be rolling shutter distortions, but they often are obscured in the natural world. People viewing the image won't notice the distortions. I suspect it would be more of an issue shooting sports, where the effects will probably be more obvious with out of shape balls, bent bats, leaning goal posts, etc. Also have heard someone questioned Canon about durability ratings and were told that the company felt shutter count was no longer useful with mirrorless since there are far fewer moving parts and electronic shutter would add to the count even though the mechanical shutter was inactive. I suspect increased video use would also be a factor, since a video can mean far more active time for the components, even though it only counts as a single actuation. One heavy user of R-series for birding has commented that the R7's AF system struggles in low light conditions more than his other R-series (two R5 and an R3). He reverts to the full frame cameras very early or late in the day or when shooting in gloomy forests.

That raw burst mode is not as good as you might think. There is a similar raw burst mode on the M6 Mk II which works the same way, but gives a 1.3x crop, resulting in 18MP raw files. The problem is that it seems to be more of a video mode! You shoot a burst and get one file with a timeline, just like a video. You cannot command it to extract all frames to raw files, you have to literally one-by-one extract raw files and it's tedious as all hell. There are multiple mouse clicks per image extraction. I tried it a few times and stopped using it.

The other main difference is the extra reach you get when changing the same lens from the R6 to the R7. Running the R6 and R7 as a pair makes a lot of sense to me because any one lens with both gets you a greater focal range. The R7 with a RF 70-200 fitted gets you out to 200 x 1.6 = 320mm. Use the older EF mount 70-200 with an adapter then you can add a 2X converter and that'll get you reach of 640mm at f5.6 Plus I'd probably use the R6 for low light stuff and the R7 for fast shutter daylight sports.

The R7 does not replace the R6 at all when it comes to IQ. You can tell immediately the difference between the two when looking at photos they take. It's like night and day. Which is why one cost a grand more. I really like the IQ of the R6 but love the features and price of the R7. Also there's the 30 minute recording limit that they took away. They should make a firmware update for the R6 and R5 which takes this limit away. I currently have the 1DXii and 6D and have been looking to replace or add to them for a long time. I'm still waiting.

@ArcanePath360
@ArcanePath360 Жыл бұрын
@@steven871 TBH it all depends what you are shooting. If wildlife and you are cropping your final image, then the R7 IQ is actually better, because of the higher pixel count. The R6 would need to be 80 megapixel to keep up with it, if cropping on that. It all depends what lens you are sticking on them too. They really are different beasts for different styles of photography so perhaps a comparison isn't fair. You have to choose one based on what you need it for

The pixel density of the R7 is very high. If the pixel density of the R7 is extrapolated to full frame you have an 83.2 mpx sensor (which is what I think the R1 will be close to). There are a lot of pro’s to shooting the R7 for distant wildlife and birds. However, if you don’t need the reach and are shooting a focal length below 400ish mm on the R7, the R5 has more res and bokeh. The crop factor is nice but in my opinion the R7 is really only worth it if you are adapting a 600mm or longer ff lens and need more reach than ff can provide.

My uses are mostly sports, too. Check out Chelsea and Tony Northrup's YT review... there appear to be serious rolling shutter issues when using the e-shutter. As handy as that might be for fast action, it reportedly only works with the e-shutter. The Northrups also mention some concerning things about the buffer. For me the ergonomics differ too much from the R6. I have bitten the bullet and purchased a second R6 body. Even though I have gone out on a limb to buy a second R6, I do fully appreciate and sympathise with all of those people (myself included) who have a pretty strict budget. Personally I would love to have two R3 bodies but that is way out of my budget. As a wildlife and sport shooter who is coming up to retirement I am currently looking to gather together all the kit I need to see me through retirement. I have 7dmk2 too. I had in hands both R6 and R7. Both didn't impressed me by image quality. R6 have better IQ but it's only 20 mpx so you can't crop much. R7 noise is even bigger than in 7dmk2, and you have no "FF look" (compression of backround, bokeh etc). So I'm still waiting, maybe there will be R6 mk2 with bigger FF sensor (30 mpx?). Also it depends what lenses and on what stadium you use. For smaller fields and lower leagues you don't need very long focal lenght because you're mostly closer to the players. On bigger stadiums there are banners, and fields are bigger (wider mostly) so you're not so close to the action. I've 70-200mm 2.8 and on bigger stadiums even on crop it's a bit short, so R6 would be weak choice without 300-400mm lens. On smaller fields or even indoors even with R6 it should do the job ;)

The entire scene was warping and he showed it real time via Atomos recorder. Secondly, the AF is not as good on the R7 as the R5/R6. Every comparison I've watched, the R7 missed more shots (lost focus). The fan boys will jump in saying it inherited the R3 AF system, but in real world usage it's not even close, in terms of performance to the R3 and lags behind the R6/R5.

True with most people. Everyone is an expert pro photographer so they make comments on what they think about something even though they have no idea what is going on.
