@@looeegee yeah I still have gripes with the GameCube controller. I have one and it’s the top purple button/z doesn’t go down far enough and small and feels like you didn’t press it down at all (that’s what she said) but that’s it. Besides the yellow joystick doesn’t have one of those thumb rests and the d-pad is to stiff. But that’s probably just me and my opinion should effect your experience, cause we all have different experiences cause we can’t all be the same however I will say that there are much worse controller, and I didn’t grow up with the GameCube so that’s probably a reason I don’t like it as much. I grew up with Wii,dsi and 3DS.

Changing the button layout of the GameCube controller doesn't make it a GameCube controller anymore. That's what makes the controllers so special; at least to me.

Ye plus the triggers changing the triggers also ruins it except the addition of another shoulder button to balance it out even if it does the same as the other z

Exactly. As others have said, adding a left Z button would be nice, plus I’d personally like to see an improvement to the right stick (just make it identical to the left stick), but those two improvements would make it perfect for me without sacrificing what’s great about the controller

@@spencersegler I have one myself unfortunately they changed the triggers to not be analog triggers I got it for smash and sunshine but since no analog triggers sunshine doesent have its proper classic control scheme like it would if you used a original one with a adapter works fine for sunshine

It seems the only things this has in common with a GC controller are the colour scheme and octogonal stick holes. Its less a revised version and more just “inspired by.”

Imo, Exlene makes the absolute best 3rd party Gamecube controller. It's great for Smash and a TON of other Switch games

I do like how the x and y buttons are closer together so you can short hop with just one thumb in between both buttons, rather than using the whole side of your thumb.

Honestly I wish Smash Ultimate just had a dedicated short hop button, so you could do something like regular jump on Y, short hop on X. It's not like they're hard to do, they could at least make it more comfortable.

That new one looks pretty nice. As someone that grew up with the GC controller but decided to adopt the new Pro Controller, I’ve really come to love it. It’s so sleek and perfect, the only downside was getting rid of old muscle memory I built up from years of Smash, but after that it’s been smooth sailings for me.

I bought this controller a couple months ago and have a pretty different take on it that maybe qualifies as “niche”. I was on a pro controller and liked the button layout more than the gc one since I play Link and do a lot of bomb stuff (played on gc before that but always found it clunky tbh). So obviously I use it for smash and got it bc of the SH macro, which I think is great for consistency. Something underrated though, is the button travel distance, which let’s you do some interesting flick movements, think rang>fh fair or dthrow>fh nair>nair trap. Bc of how shallow the buttons are, it feels pretty nice to just swipe for some of those inputs. It takes getting used to but I think it’s worthwhile depending on use case! Also the octagonal gates on a pro-style shape is a must, I also swapped out the face plate on my regular procontroller for that reason.

So I came back to re-watch this... and for those of you who don't know, Retro Fighters is basically doing a full-on better version of this with the BattlerGC, as well as a version meant for 2D games in the BladeGC. Much better button layout imo, basically using the original GameCube button layout with some additions for modern console / PC compatibility. Only problem is that it won't be releasing until late summer 2022 according to their website. I am super hyped though because I pre-ordered it after not being able to find an adapter for my GameCube controllers to use on Switch or PC for months, and it looks like a really good controller and doesn't have the macro button this one does.

In my opinion, Retro Fighters should have made an Xbox 360-style PS2 controller, even if they have to re-purpose the Duelist. The Defender and BladeGC are good options for playing 2D games, side scrollers, Tony Hawk games and Katamari (Switch only) on Switch and GameCube respectively, but an Xbox 360-style PS2 controller is badly needed, especially when they have some shooters like GITS: Stand Alone Complex, Quake III Revolution, Killzone and Unreal Tournament.

What a GameCube controller redesign needs: addition of a ZL button (or would that just be an L button?), a select/minus button to go with the start/plus button it already has, clickable thumb and c-sticks, a better d-pad for 2D games, and for the Switch specifically, a home and snapshot button. What a GameCube redesign does not need: changing the thumbstick/c-stick positions, and ESPECIALLY, the face button positions and sizes. Those face buttons are what makes a GC controller so good for Smash in the first place.

I’d say the face buttons would depend on if the redesign was tailored to just Smash, or for using it for any game. If it’s just for Smash, sure, keep the original buttons, but I’ve personally dabbled with trying various other Gamecube games with controllers that have the ‘diamond’ layout, and... it’s more consistent than you would think.

Yeah, but it's only GameCube. It's a neat thing, and if its quality matches what I saw in tearing down the Duelist, then it's great quality. For wireless GameCube play, WaveBird is where it's at. Hopefully they do the Battler and Blade as Bluetooth controllers.

I actually like this controller. It's nice though to hear some contrast to my initial thoughts. I've been able to compare this to a stock pro controller, a Power A wireless gamecube controllers, and I even modded another pro controller much like you did (adding buttons of varying height to emulate the gamecube layout). Of all these controllers, the Duelist hits the mark. Yes, I'm that niche audience (budding Palutena main without enough enough practice). And it is very satisfying being able to pull off short hops on command. I first learned about it over on Kevin Kenson's channel 2 weeks ago and back then the Duelist was nothing more than a "cancelled" kickstarter project that somehow got in the hands of some online retailers. It's good to see Retro Fighters actually selling the Duelist on their store. But still, I do kinda wish RetroFighters filled us in on the progress of the Duelist instead of going dark For 15 months...

I love my wireless PowerA white Princess Zelda Switch controller. It doesn’t have rumble or amiibo functionality, but it has TWO programmable buttons, and a slick metallic blue d-pad that is the right amount of firm and clicky.

I think the PDP Fight Pad Pro is probably the best retail evolution/iteration of GameCube controllers. I've been using that thing constantly for Smash.

i think the best "redesign" of the gamecube controller is the "WiiVision" made by Shark Mods, it basically puts the X button on the left because of space reasons. I would buy one of this kind if existed.

They're actually working on an improved Gamecube Controller called the BladeGC, where the thumb sticks are the same size and the button placements are in the right spots.

here's a fun fact: in the metroid prime games, you fire a super missile by holding a and pressing y. this is a button combination that is virtually impossible to do comfortably on every controller *except* for ones with the original gamecube layout. this controller in particular looks like that move is basically impossible.

This would've been better if the buttons were rotated clockwise so that A was in the middle, like on the OG GC controller. It has some good ideas like gated joysticks and resized A B buttons but the unaltered procon layout makes it a hard pass.

The closest to it is the Blade GCN, though they still need to provide a second variant that swaps the d-pad and left analogue stick.

Does Nintendo have a patent on the GC button layout, like they had a patent on the D-pad for how long? Because that's the only reason I can think of why some company would not use the exact same button layout that everyone has been used to for all their GC games for the last 20 years.

Don’t think so. There are other 3rd party ‘Gamecube style’ controllers that still use the exact buttons of an official GC controller. Including Retro Fighters’ own upcoming BladeGC controller. My guess behind the layout on this design is still emphasising ‘A’ as the most important button but elevating the importance of the other buttons too. In Super Mario Strikers for example, you could fake/cancel a shot, but you had to press Y whilst holding B. It was a really awkward stretch on the traditional GC face button layout, but seems like it would be much more intuitive with the Duelist layout.

Retrofighters has a new one called BladeGC. It looks similar to an SN30pro+/PlayStation controller with GameCube face buttons.

I wouldn't mind a GameCube controller scaled up a little bit. It fit in my hands better when I was younger.

Yep! This comment section is prove that we need a proper GameCube controller replica with better handles. Duelist is so close! Fools for changing the face buttons.

It needed a bigger Dpad an Power-A already solved that. Their GC controller on NS is my go to for any 3D game. But you can’t map the buttons. Does this allow to map using the switch settings?
