If you need a summary of how un-fit and how much I've always hated exercise: I can't even ride a bike. I always HATED having to move one more step than I strictly need to, I never saw the point or pleasure in voluntarily running on the spot when I could much rather spend that time reading, watching or painting something. And so, it's no surprise that the accumulated uselessness and hatred for working out lead to years of trying to be healthier but always just quitting the gym. For the first time in my life, I've managed to be consistent and actually enjoy exercise with the help and guidance of my personal trainer, so whether or not you can get one too, here's everything mine taught me and all the ways she changed my attitude and behaviours towards exercise.
0:00 Intro, how Elizabeth can't ride a bike
4:53 Part 1: what is a good reason to exercise and why it even matters
8:42 Part 2: how to set inspiring exercise and fitness goals
10:22 Part 3: the key ingredients for an enjoyable exercise session
16:30 Part 4: how to be consistent without being bored and falling off
19:40 Part 5: gym advice for anxious introverts

My father once said to me, after I complimented him on a particular feat of endurance him and his friend went through as young men, "You know, it would be a real shame if you had to rely on your body and it let you down" - I loved my father, and those words motivate me every day to push myself. Maybe that could work for you?

I quit lifting to climb and it changed my exercise from a chore to a passion. I focus on climbing harder routes rather than looking in the mirror and deciding what I need to improve. Getting muscular is a happy accident. My social circles revolve around climbing, so I end up at the gym because I want to see my friends. It's that same sort of accountability she talks about but lead by a carrot as opposed to a stick (friends being disappointed in you for not going).

Not just climbing, but any physical sport, hobby or activity really. I love climbing, but also find myself fire spinning and dancercising a lot the last few years and I've always found it so much easier to stick to than regular exercise because it's something I genuinely _want_ to do, not just something I feel like I _need_ to do.

The two biggest things that have made me finally work out consistently have been the following. First, pick non-negotiable workout days. Rain or shine, high or low energy, Wednesday(as an example) will be a workout day, so even if I'm exhausted or hate the idea of it, I'll do a pale, weak version of the workout that day but I'll get it done. More often than not the workout ends up being a pretty decent one irregardless because once you get started you get into it. The second thing I've done is found a reliable time where people or commitments are unlikely to get in the way and inhibit be from getting my workout in. For me that has been waking up at 6am. Everyone is asleep, I have a light breakfast while watching the sunrise and spoil myself with that special alone time, then, feeling recharged from that, I do my workout from 7am to 8am. This way it's done before any business calls come in or any stores are open where I'd need to run errands or anything. I used to be a late riser, but this routine has made me change that as I really cherish my quiet, alone sunrises and the feeling of accomplishment from having worked out before most people are even up and running. It starts my day off on a good note no matter how south it goes from there 😅 Hope that helps ❤

I paused the video to list my own whys and weirdly enough mine were also 1. To be a healthy active mom one day 2. To be like my cousins who are people I admire and respect more than anyone and who exercise and take care of their bodies as a major part of their lifestyle. And 3. To spend more time in my physical body and outside of the mental headcloud where I keep getting lost in. Love this video so far and hearing you list such similar reasons made me a bit emotional because I never really take my own motivations seriously. I always feel dumb for not just doing it.

Hi! I don't know if this helps, but there is a big difference between being a lazy person, someone that just doesn't care and chooses to not do stuff because is too much of a burden and someone that passionately wishes they could be able to do something and tries but can't. People with ADHD or anxiety, for example, struggles with keeping up with a schedule and building habits. Is like they wanna do it but their mind is not helping. A lot of other circumstances influences this (trauma, environment, relationships, etc.) Everyone needs to do things at their own pace and find the ways that work the best for them, is always different! She is not lazy (I wish she didn't use that word) and if you are here trying to find ways to do your thing, you aren't either (:

I don’t like to join the gym that full of people cause I’ll feel socially anxious, so I chose a smaller gym and found a coach helping me for setting a plan. I’d say in the beginning, if there’s someone who is professional and supportive, this will help a lot. Besides, weight training makes me feel stronger, and I started to feel I have the power to change something. I’m still working on progress! HEYA adrienne, and yayy there's more of us who can't ride bikes! and same, I'm still embarrassed about it (but I think this summer I'm going to actually try, but I'm SOOO scared I'll break something, they seem way too fast to be reasonable, I wonder if we've past the point where we were too young to be scared?) and honestly, it's like going on a walk or out of the house when depressed - makes you feel better but might as well not change a thing bc the barrier to actually starting it is too high - accountability is the besttt for that (bc you know it'll make you feel better so there's no risk there). if you send a text to a friend and say 'i have to have gone on a walk by tonight, can you pls text me later to check I did?' and it 100x the chances of you doing it (also easier said than done, I'd probably only be able to do that days and days in 😬 sending love though xx

I have found aerobic exercise much more beneficial (swimming, walking, bicycling, running, rollerblading, skiing, judo etc.) than weight training (good in small quantities but generally boring and the diet can mess you up). And if you are able to exercise outside rather than a treadmill even better, but I know it is just no possible for everyone or even safe. When I was very young I would do weekly yard word and then a massive cleanup of the yard with my mother where we would basically compost everything at the end of the summer and it was a great memory I have with her, may she rest in peace, but we would strip most of the overgrown foliage and put it out for the street cleaners. She was not big on exercise, but she stayed very busy with things she loved to do and working. I wish more people did aerobic activities, it has got to be the best thing for your heart and physical well being. I know now I am limited and just going out and working for an hour or two, which I hate, can have a huge impact on my spirit and outlook. I get wanting to lay in bed especially when I don't get many opportunities to just rest and recharge my batteries for the next scheme. I have found that it is almost impossible to over due it with exercise and you almost have to force yourself to rest as it can cause damage physically if you stress out your body maybe not at the time. Yes it may feel good to run ten extra miles or do a marathon but I find that mindset a bit extreme. Some people in fitness work push levels of fitness that just aren't viable or practical for the rest of us and yeah it can make one feel less than perfect and its okay. Exercise is supposed to be good for YOU.

I also sometimes did things I didn't like, which sometimes ruined the experience for me. I did however discover that I like skipping and standing yoga, since I have wrist problems. The low speed of yoga also gave me the time to do the exercises properly, so I felt less clumsy. I used to be motivated to look better but that motivation never lasted long, because I didn't see the results I wanted. However, exercising to feel better, to clear my mind and to not feel pain in my body, that works for me. I mostly do yoga and walks, and sometimes I try other stuff. I follow a lot of different yoga videos, since I also get bored easily of doing the same stuff in the same order.

Hi Elizabeth, this is speaking from personal experience but on the off-chance you or someone read this I hope it will be helpful. For 25 years of my life I hated exercise as well, had the full set of anxiety depression and debilitating back pain. The reason something switched and all I want to do is go to the gym is because exercise has worked as well, if not better than anti depressants I had been taking. 90% of the back pain and brain fog are gone after 6 months. And my body give me way more positive feedback than my job ever would. (I imagine most promotions for most jobs take at least a year. While positive response from exercise for strength takes just weeks. mental benefits takes just mere hours.)

It really is incredible, isn't it? I'd never argue that working out is a substitute for mental health treatment, if that's what is needed, but there is little else that helps me regulate my moods (and sleep, and performance AT work) as well as consistent, hard training does. Of course, the opposite is true. If I get into a funk and don't put in the work, the funk gets deeper and worse.

Excellent video! For me the hardest part of exercise is the difficulty in making a decision to do it. Once I'm doing it, I usually can complete (and enjoy) working out. I like that you've focused on creating a larger overall context for working out, as I'm sure that helps. In short you've created an "architecture" for working out, prior to doing it.

To help me with that I have done two things. First, pick non-negotiable workout days. Rain or shine, high or low energy, Wednesday will be a workout day, so even if I'm exhausted or hate the idea of it, I'll do a pale, weak version of the workout day but I'll get it done. More often than not the workout ends up being a pretty decent one irregardless because once you get started you get into it. The second thing I've done is found a reliable time where people or commitments are unlikely to get in the way and inhibit be from getting my workout in. For me that has been waking up at 6am. Everyone is asleep, I have a light breakfast while watching the sunrise and spoil myself with that special alone time, then feeling recharged from that I do my workout from 7am to 8am.

For me I always disliked excercise until I found something that worked for me - martial arts. It's not only training, you get philosophy, techniques, a grading system, history etc. Group training where you can focus on your own personal improvement. Lately I've started with calisthenics to supplement my martial arts training - something about rather than shifting to a heavier weight when progressing but rather changing to next skill for heavier progression makes all the difference to me.

Well done and congratulations on all your success! I exercise and workout because I LOVE to fight and train in martial arts. I love to punch and kick and it's so gratifying when people tell me how hard my strikes feel when I'm not even trying. The obsession with technique has paid off for me. It's great that you've taken up the yoga! I think working out by just running and/or just lifting weights is so difficult for such a large portion of the general population. It's so hard to stick to. It needs to be supplemented or even out-paced perhaps for some people with a physical activity that is fun and exciting. I'm very much an introvert but having a community like my martial arts community is also a huge plus for me. It's so much better for me having those other people to train with. Laugh with. Have fun with while keeping our bodies and minds healthy. The great part about martial arts is learning how to defend one's self and loved ones. The world is a scary place but it's much less scary when you know how to fight.

I one hundo percent agree with your points. I’m excited by the prospect of your content once you become a mother. Pre-kids I would get up to run before dawn and when that wasn’t possible anymore I lost myself a bit. Then I started using an app that was less personalized than what you use but a lot of similarities. I was working out in the evening and at home with free weights and I have very similar feelings about it and the way you described feeling and using your body.

Your content is ridiculously helpful for me (NP student in the US) with a chaotic-leaning style to life. I really appreciate the effort you put into sharing what you’ve learned, I’ve used some tips to structure my days with schoolwork, non-profit work, and wellness/home commitments. Basing the timing on energy/motivation/temptation level is genius. I’m curious if you have read Oxygen Advantage and what your thoughts on it were if so.. I am just so so inspired by you and find a lot of similarities between our learning styles. Cheers!
