Hi guys, I'm Eileen. In this video, I talked about the real reasons we keep wanting to shop more and more. We now live in a world where consumerism is celebrated, and shopping addiction is normalised. If you've watched any massive designer unboxing, luxury hauls, or come shop with me videos, you'll know what I mean. Some of you know, I've not always been a luxury minimalist, in fact I was quite a material maximalist just a few years ago. My first hand experience tells me, there's usually an underlying reason that makes us turn to excessiveness. I encourage everyone to look deeper and look for the cause for your frivolous spending (in case there is one). Enjoying luxury shopping responsibly is absolutely OK, but it doesn't mean we all need a walk in closet, or a massive Louis Vuitton or Chanel handbag collection. Having a curated wardrobe with investment pieces is often enough for us. Luxury minimalism has changed my life so much for the better and I hope you'll join me on this amazing journey xx

Thank you for watching this video about the real reasons we can't stop shopping. Shopping addiction is a real thing, so we should definitely acknowledge the underlying cause (in case there is one) and address it accordingly. Luxury minimalism has me a much conscious spender and a happier person in general. In any case, I think it's always better to invest in ourselves and our well being first before any material things. Thank you for letting me share my minimalist shopping tips xx

Luxury shopping has become a lifestyle especially in younger generation and there is no balance or moderation...and social media, peer pressure (flexing) & celebrities are to blame for this influence. My first cousins are an example of this...living at home w/ mom & dad, no retirement savings, broke all the time, traveling 2-3x a year, partying and trying to keep up w/ trends & social media. I am glad to come around channels like this that are educational and help me understand about materialism & spending habits.

You hit the jackpot when you pointed out boredom shopping and a void within us that spurred us into compulsive shopping! It is so true and it describes me to a T. I never appreciated having savings in my account and would always be thinking what I can buy with it. Recently I had a few health issues which I needed to attend to ASAP and the savings I had which I never appreciated came in handy! Never assume we are always fit and healthy and medical costs will never be incurred. As we grow older more n more medical conditions will surface and medical bills are costly!

Very relatable. I’m the one to quickly justify anything as a reward. Treat myself for working so hard. Rewarding myself for all that I’ve accomplished and just how far I’ve come. Im glad though that I’ve noticed it’s a bad habit and been doing better about it.

@@ColourfulNoir I totally relate to the hand-me-downs thing. It's been a big part of validation for me, and having fun. That said however I always did things to keep my spending under control, like compulsory savings into a different bank account. Also I never buy anything that I have already in my wardrobe that is similar. Also I go through a thing of asking what will this go with? Making lists to co-ordinate existing items to find the missing thing etc.. Changing buttons or altering the clothes to update them and make them last. Buying the best I can afford in neutrals etc. Sometimes I would buy on impulse but not often. But sometimes in sales I would throw out the rule book. Then I realised I need to just bite the bullet sometimes and buy outright the full price as there's no point having sale items if they don't go with anything. But mainly I have kept it under control. What has set me off has been the 16 month hard lockdown here in Melbourne Australia. I was bored and lonely. So I'm not punishing myself for having bought vintage bags in lockdown and studying luxury bags, and how to identify fakes etc. While I think I've mostly kept my impulses under control, now is the time for a review and make sure I can justify any purchases. I have stopped buying fast fashion, but was never really into it in the first place. Very very few items and they didn't wear well at all. An ethical and moral waste that' a far bigger concern than buying vintage handbags. I do like being well turned out, I'm tall and therefore a bit self-conscious if I am not well-dressed. Not over the top, but I find I just look horrible if I don't find my happy medium. Having vintage bags has rounded out my low cost clothes collection and I don't regret anything except maybe buying a black vintage Tom Ford era Gucci hobo bag that's a bit small. I simply haven't worn it. So I bought a Celine t shirt to go with it in spring/summer. And I have a LV Alma monogram and don't wear it much. I'n not really a logo person. but I did have a bit of a fall with the Celine t shirt. In my defence it's a FAKE! I just cannot justify the $560AUD and want to try out the fake. Madness I know...was I bored? Yes. Probably. I've got a foot half in and half out of the luxury world. I do love quality. And longevity. And I deliberately bought a fake! This is not me, it's a one off. Bored again, probably! Life hasn't returned to normal yet and maybe never will. We all need to change and thanks for the timely reminder of how to approach this sensitive and difficult topic with finesse!

I’m often asked why I don’t work since I stay home full-time, even if I don’t need the money. Why would I work just to add more money into the bank account? That’s the same with, why don’t you reward yourself? How many times will we continue to keep rewarding ourselves? Saving money, being financially wise is rewarding.

I survived a terrorist attack in 1995 and i began shopping like mad about a year later to validate my existence and to escape survivors guilt. It was very bad for years. Although i still had my job and my other outlets, at the time i felt the only way to hang on was to buy a whole new wardrobe to better myself. And this was way before social media! I was obsessed with a local boutique and coach/dooney/brahmin bags.

So true... In fact I used to shop when stress and when feeling unhappy or sad just to cheer myself. But this likely to become an addiction that could snowball into credit card debts. I have cancelled all credit cards 5 years ago and only have 1 debit card for better control as well as to spend within limits. ☺️ Many of us could have learnt our lessons a hard way but it is better to have the wake up call now than later.

I like nice things and what I've noticed is that if I don't shop as regularly, I can cut the habit. But once I start on one thing, it's so easy for me to buy/order another item thinking that I haven't shopped for a while. It's hard when there are good deals and sales around the holidays. But, I think what helps is creating a list of what I really want and/or need, so I can visualize what the budget looks like and also determine if there are some items I really don't need to buy. Otherwise, it's easy to fall into the habit of impulse buying or shopping to kill boredom. I have stress from work too and it's easy for me to use shopping as an excuse to reward myself. I think I deserve to be rewarded, but I have to watch if I'm buying one thing after another when I do end up making a purchase. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for making this video. I can't agree more with you about what you said in the video. Many years ago, a colleague dragged me to a high end jeweller and she ended up purchasing a 1.65 carat solitaire diamond ring that cost SGD28,000. For the next 1 week I saw her wearing the ring to the office. And then after that I don't see it anymore. When I asked her why, she said she had kept it in her safe. When I probed further, she told me as a secretary, to be wearing such a big diamond ring, people might think she is a kept woman. I can't help but think at that time why then did she buy the ring in the first place? Perhaps it's one of those reasons you mentioned in your video.

@@ColourfulNoir Sometimes money is a substitute for love. What she really wanted was the emotion associated with being gifted such a ring, but as she hadn't been gifted it, she bought it for herself. She's now embarrassed, probably because people assumed she was engaged, or if wearing the ring on the right hand not the left, they indeed made assumptions and told her about them!. This is a sad story.

Dupes resemble an item in structure and the material without using any identifying initials, insignias, etc. I agree that buying a dupe is a great way to determine if you want to invest in the real deal or having the dupe satisfies the desire. I started out buying imitation LV and other designer items when I flew international as a flight attendant #hidups. I eventually started buying authentic designer bags once I could afford them but was very selective what I chose to invest in. What I have discovered about investing in high priced luxury items is that it's a phase. You still love them but your priorities change. It's like an itch you felt the need to scratch and then you move on to something else. But it's sure fun while you're acquiring them lol.

But never goes anywhere to wear them. Another friend compulsively buys party dresses even though she never attends them. This is also sad but I haven't criticised her for it. She's had a lot on her plate. I try to insult myself from their judgements of me, however. It's not easy.

Thanks for sharing Eileen. 6 years ago I had an addiction to buying stocks, as soon as my pay check hit my account I would buy stocks. I cannot buy now because of the company I work for. But looking back it was not a bad addiction. My new addiction is buying expensive perfumes.

That’s actually a good thing, as long as you were buying mostly stocks with solid fundamentals instead of high risk stocks. I wish I had the same motivation and bought more stocks.

@@giainto5564 yes, solid companies. I work in the financial industry for 30 years, so I know that to look for in a company. It's never to late to start. But a downturn is the best time to buy.

At what point can we consider ourselves a maximalist shopper? Abouy how many handbags, shoes etc? I plan to have about 5-6 luxury designer handbags (hermes, chanel, dior) and that's it for example

Great work as always! I would just like to share a wonderful book I've read: "A Gentleman in Moscow". It is not "loud" or very eventful on the surface but the story is amazing and it shows a perspective on life that holds many lessons. Do you have a favourite book? ❤

Mentioning only the brand Chanel is not really fair, I've heard of many lady save up all their savings , max out their credit cards just to own Hermes. Mainly due to social pressure.

@@ColourfulNoir I bought an oven with steam function which you can activate with wlan 🙈 I also buy things like Thermomix or electric veggie cutter 😅😂 The cutter doesn‘t safe time because it‘s hard to clean it! I also have a toaster which can be connected to wlan and I‘ve never used it 🙈 Or fir example I have a washing mashine which also doubles as a dryer but for me I realized that it is less time consuming to have these two products separate.

As s newbie in luxury shopping, I guest we buy less now?? Luxury now is everywhere, even if its fake or real one ? Its ordinary now a day ,and every year they have new release like a smartphone , even the chanel classic, its not classic anymore its just a hype in this generation in my opinion..

I realized one day that having $5,000 in LV stock is far preferable to having a $5,000 handbag. This is the difference between being rich’ and being wealthy. Wealthy people exchange cash for assets that produce more wealth. They don’t spend money they invest it. They know that living passive income is the goal not showing off to strangers.

I agree! It's definitely better to keep investing a priority, luxury is, as the name suggests, a luxury and therefore optional xx

Hi Eileen, I’m enjoying your channel but the interjection of Skill Share plugs in the middle of your videos (I’ve noticed this in two different clips so far) is rather jarring and off putting to the messages you’re trying to deliver with your content. You almost had me as a subscriber but I don’t think I will until I figure out what to expect with your channel going forward.
