Hi guys, I'm Eileen. In this video, I share with you why some of us luxury lovers are almost addicted to shopping. I used to do a lot of mindless impulse shopping, which resulted in a lot of wasted money and luxury regrets. After selling many of my failed designer pieces, I realised I had to stop. In the last few years, I took good time to look into why I shopped the way I did and it completely changed my life (and my bank balance!). We often see a lot of videos about luxury shopping spree, designer hauls and expensive unboxing nowadays. This might portray excessive luxury as a norm. However quite the contrary, they are not exactly realistic for a lot of us. If you think you are not in full control of your shopping habits, don't be afraid to look into the problems. I've always said that luxury doesn't need to be enjoyed in excessiveness. I honestly believe that even a minimalist (but curated) collection should be a blessing. For me, owning less brings so many other benefits as well. You really don't have to stop shopping altogether. For example, I have a list of thing I no longer buy, but I still very much enjoy luxury items. The key is really intentionality xx

Thanks for watching this video about the reasons why some luxury lovers are addicted to shopping. I think we should all acknowledge that the constant designer haul and luxury unboxing we see on social media are unrealistic for a lot of us. Therefore it should not be something we aspire to, rather we should always set our priorities right, and see luxury shopping as completely discretionary. For me, practising a minimalist luxury mindset is the key to mindful spending xx

I totally agree with moving the bar all the time. I still remember stressing about buying a bag that cost 100$, I thought it soooo expansive! But the next one was 250$, cause it’s only a bit more expensive. And from there 500$, and now 1000$ feels like a bargain. It’s kinda scary if you think about it :/

Thank you for this video. I completely agree and after 20+ years of buying luxury, I've accumulated enough designer stuff to last a lifetime. I've tried now to be more mindful because of my kids and financial goals, so I limit the big ticket designer things to 2-3 items a year. I think long and hard for months before adding anything to my collection. I'm also focusing more on jewelry as I find it brings me more joy than my handbags. You mentioned social media, but the problem is bloggers and KZfaqrs are doing ridiculous hauls every two weeks, which conditions people to think that it's normal.

Now before I buy something, I get up and look at all my belongings. It helps me tell if I really need it. If I'm at a shop, I leave it. If I'm still thinking about it after a while, I let myself buy it (length of time is proportionate to price - Zara, 1 week. Luxury, many weeks). Xx

For this year I’m looking to buy less and invest in better quality everything, including handbags! Unfortunately Luxury doesn’t always reflect to quality, some brands increase the prices and reduce the quality! You are so right, Eileen. You always have such great insight. When I was young, I would draw clothes and show them to my mom's seamstress. She didn't only hem pants and sleeves, she could make a pattern from a sketch. At the time I was going to the clubs in Manhattan and wanted to always have a one of a kind outfit. I aspired to be a fashion designer and I brought my portfolio and the clothes to FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) for an interview to be enrolled. When the interviewer realized I wasn't sewing the clothes, he said I was only qualified to be accepted to the Buying curriculum. I went to an employment agency to get a summer job and was sent to a corporate office to be a buyer's Model/Clerical. I was offered it and I took the position immediately. I think that is why I am so mindful about purchases. I am very particular because I like one of a kind pieces and yet now I know that classic is intelligent. So the balance between classic and original is a fine line. I know I have done a wonderful job of it. I Love connecting to someone as yourself. I have a lot of respect for you.

You are absolutely right! People are constantly shopping for excitement to fill the void/boredom, to make them happy, chase the next thrill, social media, peer pressure etc. Shopping, regardless whether it’s luxury bag, clothing or electronic gadget, it can never end because there is always new trend, style & design. So like you always say, set your priorities straight and always ask yourself first if you can afford/need it or not. Another good vlog Eileen. Keep up the good work 🙏🏻

I’m late to this luxury world. I enjoyed contemporary designer bags for most of my adult life, but didn’t buy my first luxury bag until I was 62. I’m now 63. Yes, I bought several bags this year because my priorities were no longer about my kids, college, weddings, etc. I’m a late bloomer. I bought two Gucci bags (new) and three LV bags (pre-loved). I bought a couple of YSL bags, but they were too dressy for my lifestyle so I returned them. Maybe this late in life I finally feel like I deserve nice things? I don’t know. It’s a waste of money, but I am enjoying them. I’m especially enjoying my SLGs. I love having a beautiful wallet and key cles. I do tell myself that I will be leaving classic pieces to my adult daughters along with my beautiful jewelry, so that is a consolation also.

I like nice things and I’ve always bought nice things, but it’s not a hobby. The wealthiest people I know don’t run around head to toe in Chanel and Hermès. Another reason: aspirational shopping. Oh, I'll lose weight and look great in this dress. Oh, I'll organize my linen closet and need all these bins. Oh, I'm going to work out more, so I'll buy all this gear. Oh, I'm going to socialize more with friends, so I need this nice handbag for dinners. I don't usually have a shopping problem, but when I do spend more than I should, I notice that it is due to my aspirations of who I want to be. I used to go to malls to browse after work. I noticed that even buying a whole bunch of clothes on sale can add up to a lot of clutter and bills. I used to order tee shirts online and I accumulated over two grand in debt just buying tee shirts and trinkets online. You are totally right about getting used to higher price points over time when it comes to luxury item prices. I am doing the low buy year and my focus is on self care when it comes to products I do buy this year. Seeing them constantly over shop and unboxing ridiculously expensive things, whether they can truly afford it or not, forced me to see how sinful and just excessive and addict like the behavior is - and especially through this pandemic! Thank you Eileen!!! Great video!!! A couple years back, I started realizing my shopping was keeping me hostage. So I started doing a lot research on dopamine rush. After understanding my personality and how childhood memories were influencing my behavior, I got much much better. To acknowledge you, yes..... brain function, marketing, personality and soul searching help us a lot to get to know ourselves in deeper ways and avoid the pressure from our commerce platform, who is constantly trying to tell us that we need more more and more to be complete. Perspective and self-knowledge are key. Thank you for the critical thinking on the subject and for sharing it with us

Right on point once more Eileen. The concept of why we need to keep buying things and the temporary feel of satisfaction and happiness this gives us is correct. Another point to be considered is a shopper's background. Some, buy things-not necessarily the "real" thing- because of a hard upbringing and this is a way to make up for it. Either way, your advice is right on target and I hope it makes all of us think and re consider how we want to spend our hard earned money. I like that I'm able to hear your voice now! There's no need for background "music" Thank you!

An amazing feeling in life is when you are content with what you have. It’s so true that you get a high from your purchases but unfortunately this doesn’t last for long and so we continue to behave this way to get that feeling again. I don’t have a large collection of bags but at the moment I am very content with what I have. I have one pair of luxury shoes and there are a few I would like to purchase in the future, possibly this year if we’re able to.....depending on our world situation. I feel very blessed with what I have and at the moment am happy and content. Another great video Eileen.😊💖🙏

Great video! So helpful in my journey to buy less... I first unfollowed a lot of accounts on Instagram. Ever since, I've also gotten used to ignoring shopping app notifications (too lazy to turn it off now). My "wish list" is also now down to 3 items. I think it's a good way to focus on my goals without getting distracted with low-priced vintage pieces or other pretty bags or offers. So far, I still enjoy looking at new bags but I scan my head for my collection and usually I end up thinking of something I already have that is similar. I still hope we get to go out more soon so I can continue to use what I have and discover what bags I really love because my next step is to downsize a bit more.

Hello dear, I'm loving your video!!! I was a shopping addicted in the past but now I stopped myself completely as I realized I was buying the most of my things because of bargains or because I was finding something nice, even though it wasn't matching with the rest of my closet. After a massive purge now I'm using pretty much everything I own but when it comes to buy I'm confused about what I should buy so in the end I feel a certain sort of "panic" and I end up leaving the physical shop or the full basket when I'm online! I hope your videos can expire me to do the best decisions instead to just avoid them!😘😘😘

Hi Eileen, For me it began with trying to keep up with fashion that I saw in magazines... I guess clothes, handbags and gorgeous shoes are more than getting dressed... it is an artistic expression....and it is a very social experience.... I have fond memories of laughing and being happy with sales associates ... then going for a nice lunch with beautiful shopping bags 🛍 Since Covid, I have stopped this because I can’t breathe well with a mask. I have been shopping online ( too much) because my work is on hold and I have too much time on my hands... I am very inspired by this video and I plan to brainstorm some solutions until hopefully life will return to normal. As you mentioned humans get easily conditioned to a way of life... I pray the tide will change.. Ana Sophia

FOMO is also a shopping instigator for me because my favorite brand, Chanel, will not keep special pieces in stock. So I fear if I don’t get it on the spot, it will not be there next week or even the next day. But after several years of over shopping, I am more than ready to take a breather. I intend to slow WAY down this year.

Great contents, Eileen! Spot on observations! 🙌😅 Yes, and online shopping is another visit to the endless rabbit 🐰 hole especially cos it's so convenient. Just scroll, browse and click Pay. Buying spree also feeds the endorphin to the brain as retail therapy. People needs to keep spending to feel satisfied and their collection fresh! (Something new) However reselling some of the former items are mostly losing money, troublesome and simply an excuse to raise funds to buy a new bag. 😅

@@ColourfulNoir And you raised an important point too, getting used to the ridiculous high priced ticket items. 🙌🙌🙌 If you think about it rationally, a bag is end day, is just a leather bag so since when is a bag with a hefty price at 3k before it's deemed as worth it? Major score point that we convinced ourselves it's worth it cos it's branded. We get influenced and sucked into the luxury game and it's usually a walk down in the rabbit hole 🐰😜 If it's not branded, it's not even considered as "worth it". At most, I put in craftsmanship and design of the bag as the other 2 logic factors into the exhorbitant price tag.. 😅 End day most of the money we paid is for their brand marketing activities, ambassador fees (the movie stars affiliated to these brands) and the feel good feeling of able to afford a "luxury" bag.

As an accountant I absolutely love & appreciate these videos. I personally refuse to buy something new until at least 3 to 6 months after the previous purchase. I like to have a chance to enjoy the new item before I get anything else. I also have a carefully curated wish list of classics, I will only purchase items from the list that I have carefully researched & given myself a chance to think about how it will work in with my lifestyle & items I already own, if there is any doubt I won’t buy. It’s made such a big difference with my shopping addiction & of course my bank account. I personally don’t like to wear anymore than one or two (three at a stretch depending on the items) designer items at once, this stops me from coveting the collections of lux KZfaqrs & allows me to just watch & appreciate the beauty of their collections from afar, knowing that what I have is more than enough.
