Why you can understand more Spanish than you can speak and how to improve your speaking skills. Many frustrated Spanish learners tell me that they can understand far more Spanish than what they can speak. I'm going to tell you why this is, why this isn't a bad thing, and what you can do to boost your Spanish speaking skills.

Thank you for this encouragement. Your description of fear = me. I have a language partner from Guatemala and experience extreme anxiety before we meet. But after our sessions I often feel so much better. I need to hear your message many times that it's okay to speak with mistakes and that my work so far is paying off. Thank you!

Después de haber estudiado español por años, he llegado a la conclusión de que si quieres mejorar la fluidez en el habla es imprescindible que practiques esta habilidad. Es importante escuchar mucho, sin embargo eso por sí solo no te va a llevar a un mejor nivel de conversación. Entre más se practique el hablar más se va generando conexiones entre el cerebro y las cuerdas vocales

I grew up with parents who only speak spanish (I'm half Cuban and half El Salvadorian), but of course, being born and raised in the USA, me and my older siblings became more fluent speaking english and understanding english more than spanish, so our spanish is not that great but we understand spanish more than we speak lol. Whenever I talk to my parents in spanish, they sometimes look at me like if they don't know what I'm saying, because I'm saying some of the spanish words wrong 🤣🤣

Hi ERIC, I find it is difficult for me to understand themeaning of pronouns like me te lo la le les. Because their structure is very different from Chinese. How should I train myself to understand the meaning of pronouns quickly?

I found that I could easily understand Spanish speeches, Spanish documentaries. But I sometimes have great difficulty understanding what people are saying to each other. Too many pronouns LO LA LE ME TE SE LES

Hi! That's understandable. I don't speak Chinese so could you tell me if the flashcard method I described with whole phrases in Spanish and the general idea transmitted in Chinese on the other side would work for you? You would need to be sure to choose Spanish sentences that contained several examples of your trouble spots and practice recall by looking at the Chinese and testing yourself on recalling how to express it in Spanish. You could try focusing on one pronoun at a time, understand why it's there, and then batch sentences that contain that pronoun. Do you speak English as well? Some people choose to learn their target language through their non-native language when their second language shares a more similar structure to their target one. For example, it's easier for me to understand French through Spanish than French through English.

Also, understanding what people are saying to each other is the hardest part of listening comprehension and does come with time and lots of exposure to real life speech. It's great that you can easily understand speeches and documentaries. That's a great sign!

@@EricaRayLanguage I never rely on memorizing words through flashcards or word lists. I found that through reading and associative memoriesabout words, I am able to better remember vocabulary. I basically turn to resources such as KZfaq and Language Reactor. This method has proven successful for me in learning English, despite my bad english grammary. However, the Spanish poses a much challenge with its numerous pronoun variations, as just the pronoun "me" has 18 distinct grammatical structures. me nos +lo la los las +verb + direct object just this model alone contains 36 different grammatical structures 0 0!!!!

I never recommend memorizing individual words through flashcards or word lists either, but rather learning by using the complete sentence method described in the video
