I got into art later in life because I got addicted to the way it made me FEEL. If I was having a bad day, the minute I sat down to draw, sketch or paint, all of those feelings melted away. There was a transformation that happened inside of me - and art made everything ok again.
These amazing feelings are what I hope ALL my students can experience, and they're WHY I spend SO much time coming up with cheatsheets & shortcuts for my mixed media art & drawing tutorials here on KZfaq & my online art lessons over at Awesome Art School - because I want my students to get to their happy places TOO, & to get there even faster than I did!!

Karen Campbell MIXED MEDIA such an inspirational video, I’m not going to lie though the part about the children’s perceptions changing literally made me cry! Having a 7 year old myself I am lucky that we are still in the happy phase! It really will break my heart when the self doubt starts to creep in! But thank you so so much for sharing your journey and inspiring others the way you do every day!! Good afternoon Karen!! I just finished to listen to your video and it made me cry ... I always had a really hard time with my health and was most of my childhood in hospital beds ... So I found a lot of time for drawing and stuff .. When I become older I went to a school were there was a art program offer so everyone told me to go but I was told that my drawing weren’t good enough.. I stopped doing art since then.. Fews years back my CMT progress and I had to stop working and take a whole bunch of pills and treatment and also got Afo’s and Canadian crouch. You can imagine I was devastated and I went to a extremely dark,hard place ... I had to get my feelings out in a way and I started to do colouring and then slowly to drawing.. My most beautiful picture was made when I lost my grandfather and since then wasn’t able to reproduce the same art of autumn night... I’m slowly going out of my shell to express my feelings without restrictions thinking will it be as beautiful as others or as what I’ve done before. I stopped for so many years drawing and I put all my feelings always in a lock room so when it was open ouff.... Art saved my mind from the overwhelming feelings I had and still do ... Your videos and the way you express your passion is very beautiful and I talked to much .. lol but thanks 🙏🏽Your amazing 😊

ABSOLUTELY the most encouraging personal story I've heard about on becoming an artist! I started "really" started on my 60th birthday and that was 3 years ago! My art has gone to levels I NEVER thought was possible for me! I realize age has nothing to do with starting anything NEW and that includes learning how to draw, paint, etc. THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING!!! Blessings!

I started drawing as a toddler and simply never stopped. I continued to draw through high school, but when I graduated I simply stopped doing art. Or so I thought, but I switched my medium to scrapbooking, crochet, needlepoint, etc. Then the scrapbooking switched to more creative outlets of scrapbooking. More hand made things IN the scrapbooks, more scrapbooks about everything. Then started the art courses again. 400 classes later, a member of Awesome Art School for years, and I have to say I still don't think I'm at the 100%. However what I do know is my joy, my passion for all things art has gone from just playing, into hung on my home walls! And now I just keep taking classes, and keep journaling in my books, and keep learning and learning and learning. And I have to say a big THANK YOU! To all the artists who have made it possible to learn and grow.

My brother was a self taught artist. He would draw on anything handkerchiefs, paper, boards you name it he drew it and went on to plaster his work on tattoos. God took him to soon. Now I draw and color my drawings. Always with him in my thoughts... Just learning myself, but its true. I play some music and get transported, its so peaceful just to sit there and draw and start painting...

This video so spoke to my heart. I didn't think I could draw stick people but right before my mom died I had seen a book on art journaling. My heart was hurting so I gave it a shot. I quickly discovered that with minimal effort I was actually good. So then I tried more kinds of art and found out I was actually really good when I just put my heart on the page. The more I practiced the better I got. Then I started parenting grandkids and just didn't have time anymore. Recently I felt hollow and wanted to return to my peace but my skills are lacking and I have a sick husband, a mother in law with alzheimer's, and still caring for three small kids so I sometimes feel selfish for doing it. I've been with you about a week and this was just what I needed! I've completed two pieces in the last week. Not as good as what I used to do but I'm not going to stop. Thank you for sharing your story!

OMG Karen, you have reduced me to tears.....I'm a severely disabled person who has always wanted to draw....but you nailed it with my feelings of fear of failure and insecurity of not being good enough. I don't know how to take the first step as I'm overwhelmed by the blank page.......xxx

It's the FEELS that keep me in my craft room - it's what helps keep the depression/pain/migraines etc at bay the most. I've been a card maker for 40+ years and now I've decided to teach myself watercolor, drawing etc. Being on social security I appreciate you offering these tutorials on KZfaq. I misunderstood your most recent classes. I thought they were $5 per day. Maybe next time I'll do better and read closer so maybe I can grab one or two along the way. Blessings!

Totally about the feels, 100% agree!! Sorry for the misunderstanding, the clubs are $18 and $24/month for drawing and mixed media respectively. Perhaps I'll see you in the spring!

I was in the hospital for a week after a suicide attempt and everything seemed completely hopeless. Then the art therapist came and he encouraged us to create and making that art seemed to reconnect me to positive feelings. I think I wouldn't have left that place of it hadn't been for art or that art therapist. Now that I'm in a better place I'm actively trying to learn to create art. I think it helps a lot. I think wanting to teach art to others is wonderful. It helps people be happy and be true to themselves

Wow, Karen! This is such a great video and insight! I don't know why I just saw this in my feed. Truth is I sometimes get distracted by all the "squirrels" on KZfaq as there's so much eye candy. I love your AAS! I need to spend more time in it. I realized I need to step away from the enjoyment of KZfaq and really shine in the real-time instruction. That's the golden nugget! And yes, being pregnant (and so fat) felt totally unfair! The men have to do NOTHING!! What's with that?? lol! Don't get me started. Now I was the opposite, pregnancy, child birth and babies were all I dreamt of as a little girl. I would have had ten kids if my husband didn’t come from a family of ten, he was the oldest and he had a different view of a house full of kids. Now my four boys are grown I feel A need to do for me. Something I had always dreamed of. I stay busy with my job, house and I have several flower gardens, chickens, cats and my fur babies, Two Dobermans! Kids are nothing in comparison!!! “ I love watching your cat mess with you Karen, he’s just telling you he wants your attention”. Anyway, it’s my turn if I want to make a mess with paint and paper it’s ok I paid my dues. I can do this. I love your books your videos and your art. I’m sixty years old and full of energy and I have a full life, but I still love to draw,and to paint and create something beautiful!

I love your passion and enthusiasm. I finished my first "hamburger" yesterday and will complete my second one today. You have reignited my joy and passion, thank you. I'm a watercolor artist and it can be frustrating at times. The hamburger process is so different and satisfying and is an awesome skill set for my arsenal.

Hi Karen.....thank you for posting this, it was so emotional for me, and very powerful. I too am 76yrs old and think exactly as you have said at the end, but I'm going to really take this and hopefully have the rest of my life enjoying what I have wanted to do for so long, although my time is ,limited as hubby is not too well, but will really try very hard to turn up whenever I can for your wonderful lessons. Your story is very similar to mine. But, I was dying inside & I had given up. So, all I wanted is to be left alone & paint abstract stuff in a book. But, I’ve always been creative. My art saved my life, literally.

In 2015 my family had to close our business which was my full time job and a few months later my father passed away. I was heartbroken, depressed and I felt useless. My instincts were to pick up my sketchbook but I was so disconnected from it for so long that I was intimidated by it so I crocheted my heart out. Then I found you and your AMAZING channel and you saved me. I am so addicted to your videos that I feel like your my friend. Thank you Karen for being you!!!!!! Oh and I can’t believe you’re in your 40’s. I’m 36 and thought we were the same age. You look fantastic!❤️😀

Thank you so much for this video. I’m not even halfway through and I’m writing this. I have been weighed down with pain and sadness for so many years. I wish I could loose myself in art. I am creative but always say I can’t draw I wish I could. You are right practice makes perfect. I always thought to be good you must have natural talent. I would throw paint down but criticise it so much. Oh it’s rubbish no point carrying on. But oh I wish I could draw/paint. Thank you, you’ve hit my heart. OMGosh... I was 'all heart in' for this video... I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia not too long ago... shoved full of pills.... falling down a hole, with the pandemic on top of it... I had noone to talk to... the docs wouldnt listen... Your channel was the thing that helped with the pain... my friends dont understand... people dont understand... I work 12 hour days, if I can make it that long... and then I come home, and I watch a video from you, or just doodle something that comes to me. The pain recedes... and I am okay... thank you so much, for you, and your videos, and to whoever understands what I may be going through...

I have fibromyalgia also. Art does help a lot. NO one understands because they can't see the pain. Pretty soon friends stop asking you to do things because you never feel good enough. I push through the pain. I never lay in bed all day although sometimes I feel like it. I pace myself. It may take a whole day to wash my windows but I do it anyway. Bless you. I understand.

oh my goodness, it's nice ( and sad) to see a familiar story, my fibro DX in 2015 was one of the lowest points of my life, i really just started learning about art and creating for myself in 2018... it's made such an amazing difference in the QUALITY of my life. Teachers like Karen make it possible for me to do this at home, with my own health stuff and while i take care of my adult special needs son❤❤❤

I am a 24/7 caregiver to my medically fragile daughter and I've been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, brought on by the trauma of seeing my daughter code numerous times. I can't tell you how many days watching your videos has brought me out of anxiety attacks and help me get back into doing art for my self care and well being. Thank you for sharing your story and your talent. I have already learned so much from watching your KZfaq channels. The mixed media challenge is my first class with you. This video spoke to me. But not just for myself. My Mom is so giving to others she literally runs herself down. At the age of 73, her life is about helping everyone except her self. She has talent she never uses. I know she has a love for creating. But is so busy helping others, she forgets to help herself. I sent her this video, & posted it to my Facebook. In hopes, it opens her mind to help herself more. I see her health dwindling. Due to wearing herself down. I hope to find her taking some time to create & FEEL better. Thank you for making this video. You are so right in all you said. You are such an AWESOME person. TYFS

Oh I'm so so happy to help with the awareness, I totally know what you mean about women sacrificing their lives for their family, it is absolutely the most amazing commitment but it does totally make me sad to think they're losing their opportunity to enjoy life for themselves! And to know it isn't a selfish act, it's a self act of love!

I just turned 62 and I've been a crafter all of my adult life (thanks to my mom), but am just now changing my craft likes and dabbling into Art Journaling, largely because of your videos. I work 2 jobs, so don't have a ton of time right now, but I'm collecting ideas and supplies and dabbling when I can. I will definitely check out your classes. What a story! So fascinating! At 59 I decided I wanted to play guitar( a lifelong desire). So I took lessons and practiced every day. Now at 66+ I play and sing my fave hippie music. So I very much relate to realizing dreams. Bravo to you and your generosity!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

What you said about kids when they hit puberty is spot on!! My daughter loved all things art drawing was her favorite but she painted and made stuff with polymer clay, I know I'm mom but she was so talented and full of joy. Here comes puberty and now it's all im.not good I'll just mess it up😭. We couldn't buy things fast enough for her to paint I miss her❤

Gorgeous Karen I think you have just spoken the story for a lot of mothers I got back into art for the same reasons but started with adult colouring books. It was exciting to me that adults were allowed to have colouring books😜 opened up a whole new world for me including finding art journaling which is how I found you!!!! Oh Karen I love you! I have absolutely felt all the emotions watching this video. I remember my own half century journey of avoiding art because ...."I cant do it"; "im not good enough"; " im rubbish at art".... and now I have 2 children (14 & 11) and I have literally SEEN the change from happy artist to hating art in both of them. Just as my enthusiasm for art is increasing because I'm getting so much happiness and joy, and watching them falling onto the negative chain. I have been with you the best part of a year, and I absolutely LOVE you. I RAVE about you to my husband and my kids. I tell EVERYONE that I am learning with you. I am so in the camp of "its just pencil and paper, it doesn't matter I can just re-do it". I create art EVERY day now. Sometimes its a 2 second sketch on the back of a receipt, and sometimes I sit down for a DAY and work through the tutorials. I can now say that I can SEE my progress. I am now MAKING ART... and I have you to thank. Your enthusiastic style absolutely gets me creating art all the time. I thank you xx

Love this video. You are so inspirational. I’m teaching art to my bosses two set of twins.... one set is 10 year old girls and the other set are 6 a boy and girl. The boy gets so excited about what he has created. The 6 year old girl is still very positive about her work. The sad thing is the 10 year old girls are so very hard on themselves and compare their work. It’s so sad that this shift happens.

This is why I am enrolled in Awesome Art School and admire and follow Karen Campbell. As a young girl I watched Bob Ross and Donna Dewberry on t.v. I made my happy trees and happy accidents until one day someone I loved and was suppose to love me said I was wasting my time etc other negative stuff and at ages 10 through 15 I closed the lid on my buckets except to draw an eye or doodle on back of a notebook time to time. I secretly drew in my food with my fork or in the sand at the beach swiftly rubbing it away before someone seen my "waste of time" but let me say this Karen Campbell has ripped the lid of my bucket and I'm starting to fill it up with the feel goods again and with repetitive practice and play Im learning new art skills and my buckets are overwhelmed with feel goods and my skills can only get better from here on. Im 57 and that 13 year old that use to hide my eye drawings is coming out to shine entire faces and Im getting better with every lesson! Thankyou Karen for ripping that lid off my buckets!❤

This is exactly what I needed to hear. I'm 30 and pregnant with my first and am starting to have all kinds of fear of whether i can be a good mother. I left my passion for art behind for a "real" career 🙄and i think it's time to come back. Maybe it can help with my anxiety. Im going to do the 5 day drawing challenge! Why not?😊 thanks a lot Karen!
