If you’re struggling, consider therapy with our sponsor BetterHelp. Click betterhelp.com/aperture for a 10% discount on your first month of therapy with a licensed professional specific to your needs.
You wake up in the morning and go to work. You spend 8 hours typing away at your desk on a job you once loved but now just tolerate. Once it’s 5pm, you go home, make dinner and watch TV, only to do it all over again the next day.
You play sports or catch up with friends at a local bar on the weekend. Life’s good, but you still feel like something is missing.
You were excited when you got the job; you loved finding new recipes to cook every evening and catching up with friends on the weekend, which used to be your favorite pastime. But over time, these things that used to excite you have become stale, mundane, boring.
This is Hedonic Adaptation, and it's the reason why you'll never be happy.

Happiness and sadness are not everlasting emotions; they are based on events, most of which you have no control over. That's why I believe in focusing more on serenity, with a calm, peaceful mind. It is easier to deal with any situation life throws at you.

The best counter to the hedonic treadmill is called hedonic calculus, of still living a “pleasure-centric” life, but instead of pursuing everything that makes you happy, carefully consider each action to see if the pleasure gained is worth the pain received, or if the pain will be worth the pleasure.

People just need to realize that life is never going to be happiness all the time. That wouldn’t be a normal state of being to begin with. It is normal to fluctuate in happiness/unhappiness and other feelings and emotions. This idea that life should be a 100% positive experience is unrealistic. And in my opinion, it’s those that have that assumption that are the most unhappy because life will never ever meet their expectations.

A little off topic, but this reminds me of this series of images of a guy spending his whole life working & saving money then in the last image he's holding 2 large bags of money & walking in a cemetary when the Grim Reaper says "Sorry sir, you can't take that with you." The images represent how money is important to help you get through life, but it shouldn't be the most important thing in life for you since if that's all you focus on everything else will go by without you appreciating it.

I try to remind myself every day that everything we have right now will be lost eventually. Accepting the inevitable fact that one day we will die can help put things into perspective. Humans incredible ability to adapt has also allowed our autonomy, our privacy, and chances of prosperity to be taken away gradually, bit by bit, until they now exist at levels lower than in Orwell and Huxley's visions of a dystopian future. It takes very little in the way of comfort and safety to convince us that rebellion isn't worth the risk, and there is an ongoing effort to discover just where that line is and what bread and circus will be required to cross it.

@OzyMandias with all due respect Ozy, I must agree, there is little exception, much of this otherwise could, would and should be 'self controlled free world' is only conflated presuppositional pretense and presents intentional products of institutionalized conformity, these who, having contracted socialized pseudo integrity lacking adequate values clarification, apparently, use risk/reward assessment accounting to dictate 'ascertainable' course matters with prime safety in mind, thus, bound in perpetuity to their elitist masters service, however, myself, they tried - it just didn't take, as a matter of differentiation of motives based on moral consciousness and selfless purpose for the good of the whole, I am firmly committed to an although obsolete nevertheless more so true and effective alternative of either/or, which disregards not only the unpredictable bias of self gain but also the more times than not non-definable consequences of a conceivably stacked win/loss profile, in acting upon 'principle' alone: ‘do it because it need be done’ simple, one will be either honorable or dishonorable, is it not better to chance being honorably deceased for some actually worthy evil reducing cause?, harsh yet eternally righteous, than dishonorably in possession of shelf limited self serving undeserving material objectives, and yes, I do already know not to write something like expecting some great following - that just isn't gonna happen . . . .*.*.*,

my issue with the hedonic treadmill is the idea that {the thing, the situation} actually brings that happiness scale UP. lets say base happy is 5 .... even that million dollars IS NOT going to bring happiness to a 6. the people that think that way are simply in error about gauging their happiness, IMO. people think that the jump from a 5 to 6 is linear... when in all reality it requires EXPENENCIAL, and FUNDEMENTAL change, not simply momentary change. people think that NOVELTY will bring more happiness, but it is only paradigm shifts that can change the scale of happiness. and then taking things for GRANTED can se balance the scale of happiness. IMO.

But the question is, is being happy all that important? Yeah, I get that it would promote longevity, but who wants a longer life anyway? Isn't dying young better than being stuck in this shithole for a long time? These aspects are only important because we have evolved this way, being in a tribe and staying connected to people is important for our survival, that's why all this regulates our emotions in a positive manner. But I think the whole point cannot be to just survive for as long as you can, right? This makes me think that we are innately selfish and egoistic that we start giving importance to whatever makes us keep on living, to the point that we make this the purpose of our existence. I don't consider myself that important.
