I like how you added that aesthetic means a lot. My favorite guitar I own (as well as a lot of them I just had to have....) was hanging on the wall at guitar center and it called out to me as I was walking around to buy something else. I sat in the parking lot in my crappy truck for 45 minutes agonizing over it because it was all the money I had. I ended up going back in and the guy gave me a discount because it had a little ding. This was 20 years ago and I still love it. Prettiest guitar ever.

Unpopular opinion: Although not always recommended for children with infinitesimal attention span, beginners need the higher quality gear more than the experts. The last thing a beginner needs is a guitar that fights them, but an expert will have the experience and knowledge necessary to either work through or around the fight put up by a low-tier instrument and still sound great

I can agree 100%, but there’s something special about the high end PRS, custom shop fender/Gibson. You truly appreciate it’s quality and it can make you feel a certain way that makes you a better playing

I play a fender squire. I’m Motivated because of music not cause of the price of my guitar

When I was younger my main acoustic guitar was a cheap-ish Washburn. For the price it was actually pretty decent - was not too bad about staying in tune and having a playable action. It was good enough to perform with and have it stay in tune for at least a short set. Some years later I upgraded to a Martin D28. Wow, what a difference. It's one thing for a guitar to be functional - stay in tune, have playable action, etc. But there's a whole additional level of sonic richness that comes from a finely crafted higher end guitar. Oftentimes I'll be playing alone and just revel in the sheer beauty of the sound. As a consequence, I play a lot more often and longer after getting this guitar.

Early on I would've called bs or would've said somthing like: well good for you! I can't afford a freaking PRS or Kiesel! And now ive got my Kiesel and my entire outlook has changed. Id say it's definitely worth it to get the higher end gear. You end up paying for it through setup or repair on a cheaper instrument anyways.

Would be awesome to see a comparison of an expensive rig vs a sub par rig vs a cheap rig. Give people some perspective on how little or how more expensive rigs effect the player etc.

seriously. i used to shit so hard on expensive gear until i got a couple nice guitars, its just one of those things you wont understand until you sit down with a nice piece of equipment in your hands and play it for a while. its a night and day difference. playing with the el cheapo stuff is fun, and its nice to have when you want to start learning how to fix/mod your gear, but you really do get what you pay for.

This vid perfectly summed up my thoughts on the subject, especially the point about aesthetics/ making you want to play. When I was a teenager and got my first high-quality guitar (a goldtop Les Paul standard) the amount I played basically doubled because every time I saw it I wanted to play it.

I like buying the cheap stuff, and making it great. I take pride in making it better then buying it. I do like the video.

The latest gigs I've played with a cheap Boss GT-1 instead of my Helix running into cheap power-amp (Mooer Baby Bomb) - I sold most of my expensive tube amps and my sound is great.

Yes I do. Maybe you don't, but I do. But seriously, I would advise people to just pull the trigger on something that you want and not settle. If that takes a few extra months of waiting and saving, that's still better than settling. Let me give you an example, I've spent about a total of $2,000 on 2 amps in my life, the first was a 15 watt Crate practice amp that I got with my first guitar, then after about 2 years, I upgraded from entry level to a mid-high end Epiphone, and about 2 years after that I pulled the trigger on a used Marshall JVM 210 with 1960A Cab for $1,900. And now I've got my dream amp. I don't have to chase tone anymore, and I'm happy. My buddy, didn't do that. He did the thing where he would buy a $300-$600 amp every 6-12 months, and he's spent more like $3,500 dollars on amps in his lifetime, and he still doesn't have one he likes all that much, but he's got like 6 mediocre ones. It's the same story with guitars. I have 3 really great guitars, and he has like 10 mediocre guitars, and has spent more on them than I have on my Gibson LP Tradional (which is my favorite), American Standard Tele, and Schecter Hellraiser with a Floyd and a Sustaniac. Bottom line is, I suggest saving up and getting something that you actually want and will love cherish and enjoy, rather than kicking the can down the road so to speak and being a bit let down and spending twice as much money in the long run.

As a drummer I really want to start playing guitar or even Bass, I'm poor so I may have to get a cheap guitar or cheap bass but that's why they're called entry-level instruments right? I'm 26 years old and haven't been able to touch my drumset since I was around 21. I want to try an instrument that is able to be played even in my room without worrying about bothering people. I just have an acoustic bass and I want to play the bass again. The one and only left I could play with Boom by pod and I still remember it LOL! I self taught myself. Overall I may have to get $100 base but you know what, it might inspire me to work hard to get good at the instrument. Thank you for this video Tyler and God bless.

Just wanted to say that I enjoy your channel....and I'm a DRUMMER!!!! I don't play guitar at all, but I like gear in general, and I enjoy seeing how guitarists and bassists deal with common issues, similarly to how we drummers do. Many things are "universal" and the things that aren't universal are still interesting nonetheless.

Most expensive piece of gear I own? Ibanez J.Custom 30th Anniversary Limited Edition RG. It's excessively blingy with a AAAAA quilted top and back (yes, the back is quilted LOL). No one sees the back but me, but at least my belly knows it's rubbing against the beautiful quilt :) However, it's not just eye candy, and has some additional really nice appointments (e.g., stainless steel frets, Ibanez's fret edge treatment, Lo-Pro Edge tremolo, etc). As it should, it plays like butter too! :) I did a review of it, if you are curious.

The best gear for you is the gear that stays out of your way. Its a conduit for music. You pick up that guitar and music comes out. You play through that amp and it inspires. The price tag doesn't correlate directly to that. My old guitar teacher played at strat for years. He was on tour and had a dream about this red guitar with all these knobs on it. Walked into a pawn shop the next day and there it was. For $36. It changed the whole course of his music.

Yeah, I've come to the realization that buying a very quality amp is more important than an overpriced guitar.

Got to disagree on the cables - Sure , don't buy the cheapest ones of course (as the quality is often what you'd expect) but there's a lot decent cables that are not expensive - Fender, Ernie Ball, D'addario/PW Totally agree on the rest though!

Turned back for a moment because I thought I heard something and my wallet was sitting on my shoulder with a very angry face.

I have a Gibson Les Paul Studio and an SG Standard. But my drumset is the money pit of hell. I have a gigantic vintage 3-ply Ludwig kit that I bought piece by piece over a 10 year period. With the drumset alone (26x14" bass, 12x8, 14x10, 15x12, 15x14, 16x16, 18x16, 20x18 and 14x6.5" supraphonic snare, 14x5" tequila sunrise Vistalite, 14x5" acrolite snare drums) and the Paiste cymbals, a mix of 10 1970's black label 2002 and 7 1980's red label 2002 cymbals plus the heavy duty stands, heavy duty drum throne, cases/trap box, 2 different double pedals (Yamaha flying dragon direct drive plus a Tama Iron cobra double chain) plus a stack of premium drum heads, sticks, percussion items like cowbells, tambourines, chimes, and the stupid 55" Symphonic Gong I bought for some reason, I am in over $20K. This doesn't include shipping each piece individually. Plus I have a P.A. system and several lower end guitars/1 bass, and 4 guitar/bass amps including a half stack mesa boogie. What the fuck is wrong with me. I haven't played in a band in years. I guess when I die, someone is gonna have a bitch of a time sorting through and selling my stuff!!!

I just started playing guitar. I bought a Boss Katana 50 and a Gibson Les Paul Tribute 2018 gold top. It was a lot of money, but I can afford it and do not regret buying it. Furthermore, it's true what's being said in this video. It's a beautiful guitar so I just can't skip a day practice.

When breaking, be sure to not raise your head up. Keep your head down. Let your arm excelarate the cue, follow through, and let the momentum of the cue do the work. Cue ball control is key so a half tip low of center works nice at keeping the cue ball in the center of the table. That is the first step of a break and run.....oh yeah and guitar stuff hehe.

Your fourth reason is so true. I have 24 fantastic guitars and my brother 30. Well, I play all day because is so beautiful having all this guitars in my hands. Of course I am not saying you need so many guitars to have fun because I played a lot md had much fun also when we had just one guitar (a Squier Bullett bought in the early nineties) and one bass (a Squier Precision our father bought a year later) with two little amps and no pedal at all. But we have this strong passion and we don't want to spend our money other than in gear for music (cds, amps, guitars, pedals). One of the best passion a guy can follow.

I own a custom color PRS custom 24...it's a wrap has no binding straight to black..and it's a mixture of a tight flame top and a quilt..the finish is greenish gold...my main gig guitar.. I also own a 1960 Stratocaster :)

A highly under rated thing to do when on a budget is to buy used gear, Craigslist, 5 miles and FB marketplace are all great places to look. You not only have more of the option to negotiate price but you can also be as choosy as you want. It may take time but you’ll eventually find your diamond.

Nice vid! I saved moonlighting money for months as well for a Les Paul studio and Marshall AVT 50. That was 20 years ago, both gone now, sadly.

My two cents is if you’re serious about it and starting out get the most expensive equipment you’re comfortable spending. If you go cheap you’ll hate it and buy something better later on. If you buy something good you’ll grow into the gear. From there once you’re more experienced you can upgrade or that piece of equipment might be all you need.

I will never regret buying my Les Paul back in '94. It was the most expensive guitar I ever bought and I still have it. I have a couple other guitars I had bought prior to it... mid price guitars. But when I play my LP and my buddy plays the other one, you can tell a difference. You don't have to have expensive gear, for sure. The most important thing is playing and practicing. But great gear is an awesome thing to have.

Well put. I think another important thing to remember is that really expensive gear is usually pretty damn awesome. I might not NEED it, but I think it's worth stating that if I had the money, I'd have REALLY expensive gear. I'd still have my cheap crap that I love, but if I win the lottery, I'm raiding Sweetwater.

My most expensive piece is my 2003 PRS ARTIST CUSTOM 22. Bought new for $2900 , when my thumb isn't smashed I play it every day. I'm on hold for the next couple of months.

It’s true about being accountable and wanting to play I used to play a battered old squire that was falling apart and ye I still practice and was determined but eventually I went out into London on saved up a load of money went out and bought a deluxe Stratocaster in sapphire blue and a boss katana mark II and to this day even just looking at it makes me want to play the guitar

I play with 10-46 GHS Boomers. NEVER had a string break and I rarely change strings. The cable part is true, just make sure to take care of it.
