The Perfect Performance Pyramid (5:09)
3 Real World Examples (7:38)
How to Get Better at Singing (12:51)
Many students wonder why they're not getting better at learning how to sing. It's a really good question especially if you're trying to learn on your own. And in fact as a professional voice teacher that’s taught over a thousand students, I can tell you that it can be really difficult to learn on your own without personal feedback.
So today, I'm going to tackle the three biggest mistakes that I made when I was first starting to learn how to sing and how you can avoid them. I'll even use real world examples of KZfaq videos that I watched when I was learning how to sing. then I'll show you how to avoid these common mistakes.
When I was first starting off, I made three huge mistakes when I was learning to send.
The first mistake was that I was reading online forums like Reddit and Ultimate-Guitar. It's a problem with this was it was basically a bunch of angry people yelling at each other telling you that you had to feel the music more. But I was already doing that.
The next mistake that I made was I went down the KZfaq rabbit hole. I was so excited when I first found KZfaq. But after a few weeks of working through the exercises I realized I gotten totally lost.
The last mistake that I made was I actually decided to say what one teacher was saying about singing and I bought her DVD. But she spent more time bragging about her famous clients than actually teaching. All this frustration led me to making the biggest decision that would change my singing career. I decided that I would take a voice lesson.
The reason that you're not getting better at singing is that the voice needs to be built in a specific way. There's actually a step-by-step methodology to becoming a better singer. And most of the time, you don't know where you are in this progression if you don't have personal feedback.
So I want to introduce to you my perfect performance pyramid. At the bottom you can see that you need to master Rhythm and pitch. That builds up to chest voice and head voice. That builds up to your mixed voice. That leads to vocal effects. This leads to vocal style. And if you put all of these pieces together you will end up with a much more powerful and more perfect performance.
That's why everyone that enrolls in my complete singing course master your voice receives a personalized vocal assessment to tell them what they're missing. Then I give you custom exercises to help you improve your singing voice. you can get enrolled here: ramseyvoice.com/master-your-v...

I think the performance pyramid needs to have a Level 0. Level 0 deals with the setup of the vocal instrument (i.e. everything that needs to happen prior to making sound). Posture, breathing correctly for singing. It's easy to ignore this aspect.

I’ve spent so many hours studying KZfaq videos and comparing notes. I even compiled an archive of exercises, so I can build my own daily singing lessons without any experience with or basic fundamental knowledge of vocals or even music. I knew absolutely. I was a totally clean slate, and after HOURS studying videos made by professional vocal instructors, this is the most useful and impactful one I’ve seen. Learning to sing without an instructor is incredibly difficult, but videos like this are so helpful. Thank you!

I just had my third online lesson with Matt and it's been great for making real improvements. I realize this will sound like a total shill post, but I've been using the structured exercises from his Master Your Voice program for daily practice, combined with the guidance and feedback from his one-on-one lessons and it's exciting how quickly I'm making gains. Yeah, it's costly but well worth it if you are serious about wanting to sing. I'm already budgeting to continue my lessons for as long I keep progressing. I was completely embarrassed to sing in front of someone, especially with non-flattering exercises and lip bubbles, but Matt creates a very open and comfortable environment. Again, not a paid endorsement! (Which is exactly what paid endorsement would say...)

Thanks a lot for this video bro! You're a really good teacher, I've been learning a lot from you. Your story is very inspiring. My problem right now is getting my mix voice more developed. I've been singing for about 10 years, and most of the times I ended up singing and belting high with my chest voice, which always dries out my stamina too quickly. It's a bit frustrating sometimes because I can sing in the very high area as well as in the low area, but when it comes to the middle area, that's when I have trouble. So I'm working on my passagio, as most of the songs I sing sit around that area, and I always was pushing up too much chest to cover that area, but it's too limited to sing like that. I can sing in tune and with rhythm, and I know these are things I would always get well if I slow down the song when needed. But my problem is not being able to sing smoothly through my break, which doesn't let me have a good control over my voice

Thanks Ramsey! I really enjoyed your video. I also think that a key thing is to be willing to be seen :B that's a major one for me, because I used to not enjoy having attention towards me and now that I'm starting to learn how to sing, I'm working on enjoying that aspect as well and sit with the "uncomfortable" feeling of being seen or "judged"... I think once you also work on that you can start building on technique n__n

Hi Matt! I'm considering taking singing lessons with you (you seem to know what you're talking about and you also seem like a very nice guy), but there's a few questions that I would like to ask you. 1) How many 30 or 60-minute lessons do you recommend per month? Like intervals etc. 2) Approximately how long will it take me to become a good+/pro singer with the interval you recommend above? I'm 49 years old and I have some basic skills (it's not the worst) but I have a feeling that my voice is ruined after a life of singing the wrong way. My problems are pitch, vibrato, head/mixed voice, cracks and singing soft notes. I can sing pretty ok at Johnny Cash-level (my lowest note is E2, so maybe I try to sing higher than my natural voice allows) Anyway, thank you for your many valuable videos :) EDIT: Ken Tamplin's singing lessons suck and his course is impossible to master.

Hey Abdee, I would say that yes, that is normal when you're first finding your mix in the first bridge. Then, as you noted, your 2nd bridge (the A4) opens up beautifully! Try to do some exercises starting from the second bridge that descend into the first to strengthen it.

I'm saying that you want to find exercises that hit several different points on the pyramid all at once. Check out this video and watch it all the way through: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLeWlNR2nbuseIE.html

What is the solution to getting up this pyramid as quickly as possible? You need to work with exercises that will build your voice from the ground up You also need individual feedback go tell you what you're missing what part of this pyramid youre getting lost in andnwhst you need to really be working on Great exercises + individual feedback= huge results fast

You need to find a "safe" place to develop your voice without the judgement and ridicule from others. If you are constantly "holding back" emotionally, that will manifest as tension that will serve to only hold you back.

Can I ask a question why when I record my voice on the phone it sounds like the voice of a small child talking while when I sing my friends tell me and even I hear it beautiful I mean acceptable not as bad as in the recording.. !! Secondly - when I record my voice, I speak in a low voice, but when I listen to the audio, it seems as if I am screaming .. ++ I keep the phone far from my mouth so that the sound does not sound loud, but the same bad result..
