One of my biggest mistakes was viewing excerise as a way to get rid of calories, instead of seeing it as something that makes me feel strong, confident and healthy. That shift in perspective made it much easier to enjoy working out and helped turn it into a habit that I do for its benefits on my mental and physical health - not as a punishment for eating.

I was the biggest I’ve ever been at 214 pounds and I found out I was having a kid and decided I needed to get in better shape for him. I lost just over 50 pounds in 4 months and got down to 162. I didn’t prioritize my protein intake so I lost a fair amount of muscle but now I’m doing it the correct way and I’m up to 170 with more muscle and less fat. My best advice it to be patient, take progress pictures, weigh yourself weekly not daily, and be happy. Find something that works for you and stick with it! If I can do it anyone can! If you lost 6 lbs in a single week that is way too quick and extremely unhealthy. Your caloric deficit would be hurting you more than helping. If you lost that much in your first week back to dieting, over half of that was likely water/colon weight and that's fine. You never want to lose fat quicker than 2 lbs per week.

At my gym, I've done a whole 45 minutes of cardio while watching this girl who was by the weights. A lot of people were over there, but I was watching her because she was on her phone the WHOLE time. I saw her do 2 sets of squats within that 45 minutes I was sweating my a$$ off, the rest of the time on her phone...she literally was in the cute fit, had weights & other props next to her and didn't use them the whole time. It's not uncommon to see people text for 10 minutes in between their sets, just hogging the machine for no reason. Pet peeve asf...this is why I refuse to go to the gym at busy hour. It's not the lack of people I like, it's the lack of people who go to the gym to NOT workout that are never there at midnight. If you go at night, you're surrounded by people who actually want to be there, in and out fast, and not hogging the equipment.

One thing I read is that you burn more fat working out on an empty stomach. With me I workout first thing in the morning. I’ve been losing weight by watching what I eat , getting enough sleep ( about 6-8 hours ) drinking water , minimizing my junk food intake , eating plenty of produce , plenty of fish , I run 6 miles every other day , deadlift or whatever type of weight lifting exercise, body weight exercise, do I know what I’m doing , not a clue , but I know I’m doing more than nothing . Doing something is better than sitting on the couch . I slimmed down a lot .
@orlandoploom4585

I can say that working out on an empty stomach is completely not like this, when it comes to a cardio, you actually have better endurance thanks to an empty stomach and so on, but also since you cross barrier of your bpm i think its like 160-170 your body shoud be using carbs, but since you dont have them, it is switching for energy from your muscles, so you might just be burning your muscles rather than fat, its up to cardio. When it comes to lifting weights, with an empty stomach you are mourdering your body mate, you might experience feeling weak, tired after just a moment, and as well as with cardio, at some time instead of building muscles, you might burn them. So i suggest you eating some carbs combined with proteins before workout, not too big portion, just to make you full for like 70-80% and then start your training. It is actually gonna work better, i mean your total intake of calories will be the same but you'll end up burning what you ate during the training

Big mistake I learned in my weight loss was not all calories are the same. At one point I was trying to cut calories down to 700 every day, but was only looking at the number. I was so hungry every day because it was nothing but carbs and sugar. Eventually I started watch my micros. Started eating more protein and less carbs. Just by switching what I ate. Your big mistake is to eat very little. 700 is super low, super unhealthy unless you're a child. That's your mistake. Not "not all calories are the same". But yeah, some foods are better in terms of getting you full. But this isn't about calories. Calories are a different thing.

A mistake I was making while dieting was making sure everything was as bland as possible. If I was enjoying my food, it must be unhealthy. Adding salt, splenda, or any zero calorie topping such as Walden Farms syrup was a no-no. It was just so unsustainable because I wasn’t enjoying my food, causing me to yoyo diet. After finding your channel and Dr. Greg Doucette’s, I started making creative and tasty foods with a high volume to calorie ratio, and it’s been really enjoyable and I look forward to cooking all the time!

Cooking with salt has helpd me so much to stay committed to eating more healthy and to cooking my own meals. When I was growing up, my mom treated salt like it was the devil and never used it when cooking, and for a long time I did the same. Part of the motivation for that is that high blood pressure runs in our family. I had the same experience you had: the meals I cooked were so bland and unappealing that I could never stick to it. I still keep an eye on how much salt I use. I have measured out that one pinch of salt for me is a bit less than 1/4 tsp which is ~500mg of sodium, so I can keep a rough track of what my sodium intake is. But you still need some sodium, and if you are cooking most of your own meals from scratch, there is not going to be much sodium coming from your raw ingredients, so you have more leeway to add salt for taste. Once I started using salt, I found a joy and sense of wholesomeness to cooking all my own meals. They are reasonably tasty, very filling, and it leaves me feeling good about myself and the choices I am making.

OVERTHINKING. That was my biggest mistake.I was thinking to high level. I lost over 60 pounds since October of last year. I lost 45 pounds before I even hit the gym. It’s all about the WHY. I approached my journey like a solid engineering job structure. The what, the how the why. Choosing to focus on the what and the how got me nowhere but when I put the Why in the forefront it became easy.

I made the terrible mistake of being body shamed by an insecure husband, post baby. So, from going from a super fit, exercise loaded lifestyle, I then became reclusive, and the weight just piled on, with depression, and then health issues [thyroid! etc..] So my advice is to ladies especially, but also males too, if you are ever body shamed by a so-called 'loving partner' - it is truly their problem, don't let them make it yours! The worst thing you can ever do is give up a fit and healthy lifestyle... if you have to choose to let something go - choose the thing that is harming you

Diet is a crucial thing, without it exercise won't help at all. Many beginners struggle to find a proper diet because they want fast results and they end up with no results at all, less money in their pockets and probably some big health problems. First of all, you have ti change your mindset, so I encourage you to do a research and find a diet that will work for you. If you still don't know where to start, consider dietarize as your starting point (it comes with a workout plan as a bonus, which I find convenient since it doesn't require going to the gym at all). If I managed to transform my body, everyone could do it!!💪💪💪

One thing I realized was that my portion sizes were wayyy too big. Even if I was eating healthy food, I was eating double or triple servings. We often think that we can eat more healthy food than unhealthy food (and you can to an extent) but the amount makes the poison. Especially if trying to slim down and not bulk up, if you have a history of overeating you'll probably need to shrink your stomach down to be satisfied from smaller portion sizes. This is why I never fully agreed with influencers who say to just eat a big serving of carrots or popcorn, because even if you're taking in less calories overall, you're not really shrinking your stomach down to a sustainable size. Maintaining your satiety throughout the day with multiple meals and small healthy snacks is wayyy better for you (plus it can work with an intermittent fasting schedule if you want to do that). Now I'm maintaining a healthy diet that is high in lean protein, packed with lots of fresh veggies and fruit, a little bit of healthy carbs, and small healthy snacks throughout the day and I feel completely satiated! I can't even explain how much better I feel, just way less bogged down. Now I just need to step up my exercise to match!

It's almost November now and I'm lost almost 40 lbs and I am looking to lose another 25 lbs or so. My biggest misconception is that “healthy” foods aren’t inherently conducive to weight loss. Calories are the thing that matters. If I can find something tasty that can satisfy hunger and prevent a binge (protein ice cream is a game changer), that works better for me than trying to consume superfoods and having an Instagram worthy diet. The pretty salad was a great choice at the time, but when evening rolls around and old habits are coming up because of hunger, that salad quickly becomes less effective for my journey. It’s a numbers game. It is the hardest simple thing I’ve been done in my life and I still have a long way to go.

It's going to sound counterintuitive for a lot of people, but one thing that helped me was actually planning one fast food meal a week or every two weeks. I knew that on that day I'd in a surplus of roughly 500 calories, so I'd just create a slightly bigger deficit for the remaining 6 days. Reason is, I tried cutting it out completely a few times and it didn't work. I wouldn't have any fast food for a month or two and then I'd allow myself to go once. So I'd go to McDonald's for example and think "Oh, but I also want to eat A&W...and Harvey's...and maybe Burger King. Oh yeah and that lebanese spot near my house." and then I'd snap right back into ruining my diet up. By having it planned, I could eat at different fast foods every week/every other week and still lose weight.

@@currbag I eat fast food on cheat days too. It just wouldn’t be my weekly reward for losing 3lbs. I try to make the best choices I can during the week and cheat on the weekend, but it’s not a hard rule. If I have a craving during the week and I really just don’t want to say no then I’ll still satisfy the craving. It’s better to satisfy it now than let it go out of control and ruin progress. Generally I do pull through without breaking my diet and I don’t crave often and when I do I’m good about scheduling it for the weekend when I don’t mind satisfying cravings. I make weekly charts where I keep track of the bigger picture of my decisions throughout the week like if I ate anything unhealthy or healthy or did I keep to calorie limits, etc and I’m surprisingly keeping to my calories 3-4 times in the week. This is the case for perhaps the last month. I think if I combine that with going to the gym or walking I should lose more. My weight-loss has mostly been the result of diet with very little to moderate exercise. I exercised more before this, but after I plateaued I stopped for the most part. I didn’t feel like it was helping or I wasn’t seeing the results. Now that I’m losing again I might have to pick back up and go to the gym/walk.

@@nutmalone5527 If you’re still losing weight consistently then add a small amount of calories at a time. I maintain around 205 pounds while eating about 3500 calories a day. But I was losing about 2 pounds a week on 2700 to 2800 calories a day. So I gradually added calories back in over the course of a couple of months to find where I could maintain a weight I feel best at. As someone who lost 130 pounds at one point (320 pounds to 190 pounds) I used to be afraid of adding back in calories, but it can do the body good and help you maintain your goal weight.

Hey Will, loved the video man. I started my journey a few months ago and have lost almost 35 pounds. I cant really tahnk you enough. I think one thing for me that really surprised me is how many calories steaks have. I used to look at a 16 oz steak and I would tell myself that its a protein and that it probably has like 500-700 calories. Instead its more like 1200-1500. Now I really overlook eating fatty meats and if I do I try to share them with someone else that way I just dont eat half of my calorie intake in one meal

These days I'm a huge fan of diet breaks. Eating clean, high protein, low carb (not keto/medical low carb tho, I'm not trying to treat epilepsy here) for a couple of weeks or a month to shed a couple of pounds of fat, and then giving myself a week off to eat at maintenance to remind myself what I'm really supposed to be eating like. My tip is: Split restaurant food in half! Save it for lunch the next day. Ask for a box the second it's delivered if you're at a table, or just split it up once you crack open the take out. It's usually way too much food anyway and by cutting it in half, you cut the calories in half and won't feel like you are going to explode afterward.

These are some good tips! Especially the diet break. If my cut I going on 8 to 12 weeks and I still haven't reach my goal, I will still start a reverse diet. I am losing weight while doing it but not leaving myself to starve for too long. Gonna try it your way my next round.

The best things I did for weight loss were limiting liquid calories. Drinking a flavoured water instead of juice/soda. And better still instead of the flavoured water from the store with sweeteners and stuff try just putting a lemon wedge in your water bottle for flavour

Will, you may be allergic to walnuts. I used to eat walnuts and they would make my mouth numb and itchy in places. This only started happening in the past 5 years or so. I had a blood test done and found out I’m allergic to walnuts. My doc prescribed me an EpiPen (Epinephrine) just in case of anaphylaxis and said to quit eating walnuts and foods that contain walnuts.

Always good to see your videos. I'm starting to consume more consciously... my "lunches" consisted sometimes of 6 to 8 buffalo wings, or the healthier chicken tender option, sauce on the side of course. 3 to 4 22oz beer, michelob ultra because of calories and this was a routing I had for at least 4 days a week last year. I gained back the weight I had lost during 2017-2019 and just felt super tired most of the time. Anyway time to change. Thanks.

My most recent, "big mistake" was not realizing how lazy I get when I'm dieting. I would still exercise, eat right and be at a deficit but would stall out often after just a few weeks. Took me a bit to realize I would go from multiple walks in a day to make sure I get 250 steps every hour during daylight, competing with friends/families for total steps in a day/week on fitbit, and doing chores consistently/proactively when I was at maintenance to suddenly having a lot of lazy days, where I would just feel exhausted and give myself the excuse to take it easy. I'd stop wearing my fitbit, etc. You burn a surprising amount of calories just being more "lightly" active throughout the day and it's way less stressful/hard to recover from compared to exercise. To touch quickly on another mistake I had, it was simply taking on too much at first. When I would finally work up the willpower to get healthy, I'd have the desire to do it all. Calorie counting, eating only healthy foods, exercise, counting steps, the whole shebang but then I would burn out so quickly or be stressed in a way that would be easy to get discouraged at the first barrier to progress. Overall, really focusing on tiny, one at a time adjustments over my life was better than trying to pretend I was a completely different person in the span of minutes. I dropped drinks with calories and only once that was established, did I move onto the diet and then eventually weightlifting.

@@katrin6388 I think that's a great idea. Surrounding yourself with people that are healthy/athletic is super helpful. I def gained weight at a job where it was customary for everyone to go out and eat together every lunch and we regularly had desserts brought in for all sorts of occasions. Moved to a big city and my coworkers were the kind of people to talk about what runs or hikes they did over the weekend, no one ever brought in sweets/treats of any kind and we would use 1 on 1s to walk around the city/office. Best shape of my life and it required no mental effort on my part, it was just my new norm.

One thing I found out that actually helped me alot to lose my 85lbs was, when you feel hungry try drinking a full glass/bolt of water and wait a few minutes. Your body can't tell the difference between when your hungry or when your thirsty so it send the same signal to your brain. Before when I was 300+ lbs I was always hungry so I ketp eating until I was full where I should of drank some water. Hope this helps someone out there!

"Lazy keto" was the term ten years ago for what you're describing, not sure if it's still the term. That was used for beginners to ease in, then you start tracking things once you've adapted. Incremental changes are easier than drastic ones so lazy keto is a good first step. It's also useful for experienced people who can maintain their weight with intuitive eating. I feel like keto got a bad reputation after it became a fad and had a ton of people who didn't know what they were doing try to teach people about it. I've seen a ton of people fell into the same trap as you. People think they can restrict carbs, put butter in their coffee (I don't recommend) and that's it. You still have to count calories!

@@richardking4514 I followed regular keto in the end, but it wasn't something I could stick with long term. Once I started properly tracking food and carbs I realized just how wrong I was doing it and how much misinformation there is going out there. I agree, the fad that most people follow is lazy or dirty keto and most of the time should probably just be referred to as "low carb"

First I have to say the comment of appreciate the journey is noteworthy. This can and should be applied to everything we are doing in life. I got fit and lost over hundred pounds approximately 5 years ago. I did not follow the rules of dieting. I found what worked for me. Real food for real life. I also weigh everything that I eat. I exercise daily. I have to watch the exercise because I am over 50 and my joints can give me trouble if I push too hard but like you said you have to push to the limit to get results. I mix things up so I can push but not injure myself. Just found your channel and really enjoying your content.
