Hes been drawing for 20 years, if he did 1 drawing a week he'd have completed 1040 drawings, if he did 1 a day it would be 7,300, but we know there have been videos and streams where he's done 3 or 4 drawings in 1 day at least, sometimes way more, it'd be an understatement to say he's done over 10,000 drawings, his sketches are going to be good, but that doesn't mean yours are bad, you've just done less than him, as long as you're making art, you'll keep improving, you've got this!

This explains the issue I always had with most 'shapes' tutorials & tips. I always felt like something was missing because (to a degree) the shapes seemed almost arbitrary, I still struggled to understand the subject's structure and perspective. Finally someone talks about the connection between 3D composition and 2D simplification. Thank you!
@walterchamberlain9052
@walterchamberlain9052 Жыл бұрын
ytsiMMisty, I've had the same problem with "shapes" construction. We're told: "Break down the basic shapes - there's a square there. There's a triangle and a circle in that bit. Now just refine it down into the details." But it's not a square and a triangle and a circle. It's a body. My brain can't make the leap from rectangle to torso. Whether I try to sketch "freehand (not shapes), or whether I try to construct using shapes, the sketch still comes out more or less that same (which in my case is pretty bad). I will say, though, that using shapes might help with getting the proportions more correct. Peace

I know it's a joke, but actually kind of makes sense. We tend to think that a rough sketch is just a random scribble with little value, but in reality most of the knowledge and ability of the artist are shown in a rough sketch too. So you are basically saying "he is a pro".

I've been drawin since I was 8 years old. So 12, almost 13 years now! And these are some pretty helpful tips! Another tip I can give you if you usually sketch traditionally: Use different pencils for different sketching!!! I tend to lose myself in the fun of sketching a lot and what I end up with is basically a final drawing...but it's in pencil. To prevent that. Take a pencil that seems it needs some sharpening, DONT SHARPEN IT and do the sketching with that! That way you'll also have a harder time adding details so then maybe you wont want to do them because of the t h i c c lines. At least that's my case haha. I usually use that for rough sketches. I use rough sketching just to find shapes; to get basic anatomy done for example. No details. Just shapes. Then if I want it to be a bit of a refined sketch I usually take my mechanical pencil and add a few details ontop BUT WITH A VERY LIGHT HAND. Then that's usually it for me cause I like to paint in acrylics. But Jazza's video has more info on how to move onto the inking process so watch that part again!

Yes, please more content like this!!! This is the best explanation of sketching technique & purpose that I've ever heard and I grew up with an artist for a Mom who taught me my first drawing, plus a couple of years of art in high school, and now my kid is a full-blown artist who likes to tell me how to do art (bc teens know everything, I've heard). I'm just getting back into it since illustration hasn't been my forte and this is blowing my mind.

I’d also like to add that the “automatic drawing technique” in which you hold the pencil loosely and just allow your mind to unhinge and begin drawing...whatever is a good way to “stretch before you sketch”. I actually teach automatic drawing techniques at a local art school and it’s amazing how much better drawings become when people relinquish the pencil death grip. Just my 2B cents.

@@cynthiabrogan9215 it’s basically just meditation, but instead of focusing on not thinking, you’re making a slight detour to creative town. Then you grab a bus in crazy town, and take it through the whole place, sketching whatever passes by. Because the image is constantly changing, so too should the sketch. This is great!!!! I always see tutorials on Instagram that are just super short tutorials like this (limited time, so not enough to go in depth like this video but they still get the point across) and people just whine that there’s no rules to art and that they can do whatever they want. When yes in theory there’s no rules to art, but they’re just trying to make your drawing better and your life easier! You have to learn what “rules” there are so that you can break them properly. I struggle with sketching so much so I try and absorb everything I can when it comes to sketching. People are too afraid of constructive criticism and don’t want to take actual advice.

This is a really good explanation of sketching! I’ve been an artist for a long time now, I only had a good art teacher for my first year of school and she explained how important getting your basic shapes are. I had to learn a lot of stuff myself, but it really helped to have those few lessons. This is gonna be so helpful for so many people!

Could you do a tips and tricks on clothes and armor? That’s my downfall when drawing
@thebatman6201
@thebatman6201 3 жыл бұрын
Different cloth weight differs from fabric to fabric.. and therefore they all have different levels of stiffness when resting on the body. Think denim vs silk. Does the fabric catch the air? Or does it breathe? Think parachute vs napkin Practice drawing curved lines and giving them different bends to imply that weight. Most folds typically lead back to one major spot.. like the elbow or knee. Loose fabric also creates folds when hanging. For armor... look up armors. The pieces that make up a full set. Armor isnt skin tight. Make it bulky. remember they have padding underneath

Great video, wish I had seen this 15 years ago. I struggled for a long time, being afraid to "mess up" and wanting each sketch to look amazing. Over the last few years my sketch process has evolved, its more free and exploratory. The result: much more satisfying finished pieces and most importantly a much more satisfying drawing process.

Actually i believe most artists are self taught. Not many go and say "yeah im gonna take art classes" out of nowhere. Many start drawing in their childhood or teenagehood and discover talent there. From there only some continue depending on passion in art. But still the majority i believe. Its funny to think how repetition and practice alone teaches yourself better than any teacher and a young age of 12 with a ton of drawing practice you can already draw very complex stuff.
