For what it's worth I absolutely loved the film. I remember my parents showing me "A new hope" when I was six or seven and I had no idea what was going on I just remember what the film felt like to young me. And now, roughly 20 years later, I sat in the cinema and I got that same feeling again, something that didn't happen during the prequels or The Force Awakens and for that alone I love that film - to me it just felt like "Star Wars".

Then he looked up to Rey from a position of vulnerability, kneeling, mind scrambling for words that never came, seemingly caught by her witnessing his hypocrisy. Beautiful ending, but then JJ came back and didn't have the smarts to continue on with these moments.

Abrams messed it up from the beginning by portraying Luke as a myth in TFA. No one becomes a myth in 30 years. Seventy years later, we still have the ability to look back on and remember the heroes of WWII. There is no way Luke becomes a myth in 30 years. And that's not the only Abrams f-up in TFA. That's why I have no hope for Episode IX and refuse to watch it. Abrams messed up Star Wars, and Johnson just threw it in the garbage. If Johnson wanted to change Star Wars so much, then he should've started an original IP and built his own world, his own characters, and his own franchise rather than completely ruin something that people have enjoyed for four decades. Mark Hamill tried to warn us.

I think that in a galaxy of trillions of beings with only a handful of people at most seeing Skywalker in the flesh would make him a legend by virtue of third hand stories. I don't mind that he became a legend and I think it makes sense. Farmboy destroys the Empire's ultimate weapon kicking the whole Galactic Civil War into high gear, he then gains even more fame as a hero of the Rebellion and then ends the war by defeating the emperor and his dark enforcer. That, and probable New Republic propaganda hyping up the heroes of the former Rebel Alliance, sounds like a legend to me and probably would seem that way to most in the galaxy. And I will point to the past Star Wars properties that people didn't like at first, including; Star Wars V, KotOR II, and the Thrawn trilogy to some extent. There will always be new Star Wars for people. I am more afraid of IX feeling disjointed. I like TLJ more than TFA and it is not nearly as bad as Episode II and it's a good movie if you shed every expectation you have for it and your knowledge of the force from Legends. It bucked everyone's expectation. And you have to remember that these are all dumb, easy to understand kids movies, so why do we hold them to an impossible standard?
@Gabriel360LIVE6 жыл бұрын
Isaac Engle "I think that in a galaxy of trillions of beings with only a handful of people at most seeing Skywalker in the flesh would make him a legend by virtue of third hand stories." Luke wasn't called a legend in TFA; he was called a myth. Those are two different things. Yes, what Luke did as a part of the Rebel Alliance to topple the Emperor could conceivably become legend in a short period of time, but there is no possible way that it (or Luke) becomes a myth. A huge amount of time has to pass before something can become myth.
@acekoala4576 жыл бұрын
He calls himself a Legend in TLJ, but you are right about the Myth thing in TFA. But even then you could argue that Luke may not have even existed and there were probably those people who thought he was just some made up hero or someone masquerading as a Jedi to boost Alliance morale or recruitment. They also mentioned the Jedi being myths in New Hope so the galaxy probably has a very short memory. Like how we now have kids who don't remember 9/11 for example.

@Fizechef6 жыл бұрын
TimeandMonotony The problem are the huge plotholes. Most importantly, if they can use light-speed to weaponise ships, why haven‘t they done this before. Sure it makes kind of sense, but it just destroys every plot we had so far. Why destroy a death star with a well placed torpedo? Just shoot a ship into it. Why even build a death star? Wanna destroy a planet? Just shoot a ship into it. But this moment, that looked realy great btw. at least visually, would have been completely unneccesary if the pink haired general would just have told someone her plan, or just that she even has a plan.
@TimeandMonotony6 жыл бұрын
Fizechef Made sense to me that it would be a last-ditch effort because I can only imagine how expensive those motherships must be. Why would you kamikaze that massive an investment of money, time and resources if you had literally any other option?
@TimeandMonotony6 жыл бұрын
Zylar Adama Your opinion doesn't change the fact that it's a great movie, and a shining example of star wars at its best. :)
@Fizechef6 жыл бұрын
TimeandMonotony Yeah its just that first of all it doesn‘t have to be a complex ship. Just take a lumb of metal or even just an asteroid and build a engine onto it, use a droid as the pilot and you‘re good. (Why didn‘t they use a droid in the movie btw.). But more importantly how many ships and people have they lost during these battles in the OT. None of this would have taken place if weaponising light speed is a possibility. But this is just one of so many flaws the plot in TLJ has. Like I said, it‘s a visualy stunning movie and I enjoyed watching it, but if you think about it‘s plot you have to realize thats objectively TLJ is just not a good movie. Looking at its plot there are so many things that are just not explainable. Why didn‘t the pink haired admiral just said: „Yeah I have a plan, I don‘t have to tell you, but trust me everything will be fine if you just do what I say.“ Half of the movie would just fade out of existence. Why didn‘t the first order just warp one or two of their stardestroyers in front of the rebel ships instead of chasing them for 15 min? Why can a Ty-Fighter shoot through the shield of a massive ship if a stardestroyer can‘t? How did that hacker dude know about the escape plan with the small shuttles if even Finn and Poe had no idea what was going on? How did Finn and Rose get back to the base after Rose crashed both of their ships in front of like 15 ATATs? How did Leia and Ray learned to use the force? Leia got probably trained by Luke but that still can‘t explain how she can survive the vacuume of space. Ray on the other hand spend like 3 days with Luke. No way she can learn all of that in this small period of time when Anniken and Luke needed months of training. TFA wasn‘t the best star wars movie, but it set up many story points that could have been great. Rogue One was realy well written in my opinion, one of the best star wars movies, especially because they didn‘t fear to kill of main caracters. TLJ was from a stroy telling perspective just bad. Everything set up in 7 was just shown to be not important, no likable character you were able to identify with was ever at risk of loosing something. (I don‘t count Luke because he was basicly converted into an moron who wanted to kill his own family) They even introduced Rose, just to kill her at the end so that nobody important has to die. I don‘t mind change. I don‘t mind trying something new. But change has to serve a plot, and it didn‘t. The change in TLJ was just for the sake of change itself.

He has a honorable death indeed, very touching. +richard haynes - It *should* be part of a series of 9 films. But it's not. If this were really the 8th film in a series, it would have followed a cohesive story arc that was outlined before the film was ever even written. But that's not what happened. When Abrams handed the reins over to Johnson, Johnson decided to take the story in an entirely different direction from the original story Abrams had in mind. As made clear by the countless things from the force awakens that he decided to just abruptly do away with, and the fact that the theme of the movie was to "let the past die." Now control of the saga is going back to Abrams, who has to somehow un-fuck the saga by either transitioning back into the original story arc he had in mind, or by continuing in the *new* direction Johnson has taken it, and doing his best with someone else's vision. Either way, the 9th film is going to be written on the fly. In other words, thanks to Johnson (and partly to Abrams) this is no longer a coherent series. It's more like a game of telephone. Regardless of what happens in the next episode, the clusterfuck that johnson visited on the saga will always be a part of episode 8's legacy. No matter how well 9 is written, and no matter how well the story recovers, it will always be true that 8 was kind of a mess. *No film should need to be salvaged by it's sequel in order to be good.*

I saw TLJ about a week ago for the first time. I had already read and seen the spoilers so i didnt think i could have the movie ruined if I happened not to like it. But I actually think it was a very good movie. It has it's flaws, but so does every other SW movie. I think also seeing videos where people explain TLJ and point out it's strengths has made me realize what a great movie it is. I hope the cast and Rian Johnson dont feel let down because of all the negative criticism. I truly think Luke ended up as the hero i always imagined him to be. And the new characters now have so much room for potential and growth in the next movie...im excited to see what happens. but not making theories! i'm just going to sit back and enjoy the ride! Crisp Man years after it came out even I’m still unsure of what to really say, it was Good but also had some bad moments to some extent, and overall felt like one of the more Balanced Star Wars movies. What really dragged it down a peg from being one of my favorites was the Comedy, Admiral Holdo, and the Ship chase, Cause in all honesty when compared to Empire Strikes back the Millenium Falcon space chase was fast paced, intense with an iconic score, and the Last Jedi’s chase in general just felt slower.

Gabriel Mutombo yeah I’d hardly call The Last Jedi one of the worst movies ever, even if it did a lot of things wrong, it did things right too. And Keep in mind most of the Fans calling it the worst movie ever are the same Fans who called Return of the Jedi and the Prequels the worst movies ever, so their thoughts aren’t really something to take note of. Especially when they throw around bold claims like “Star Wars is Dead,” or how much it ruined their childhoods. Those remarks just seem over exaggerated at this point in time. Then you have Channels that dedicate themselves to trashing Disney with everything they do, which is not really the best way to go about it, instead of spreading hate for something their needs to be a fair amount of praise as well, but with those channels it just feels like they look more on the Negative side than Positive, but that’s just my opinion.

@caikelm57664 жыл бұрын
@@gustavhls5739 I think the movie had a message, but it just couldn't deliver it properly. Everyone complains about finn and rose's useless storyline and luke's behavior but I think that was done on purpose. I think the main message of the movie was that anyone can be special, you don't have to be of a powerful lineage to become strong with the force. That's why rey's parents are nobodies and that's what luke keeps saying to her, that the force does not belong to the jedi, that's why the kid force pulls the mop at the ending. The other message is that the older generation must be always respected and being younger and new and all does not mean you can do everything as you please ignoring the teachings and orders of more experienced people. That's why that whole imprudent scheme poe, finn and rose were doing was useless.Holdo and leia knew what they were doing but poe just wouldn't have it, he was reckless and that had consequences so he would learn. Now About luke, I sadly agree that his actions were quite out of character to me. BUT I understood it. His fame and power got to his head and he realized it afterwards, he told rey what happened. I wish people payed attention. He saw darkness in ben solo,the dark side was so tremendously powerful there that for a moment he did think of killing him. Contrary to other people, I actually think this humanized him a lot. It affected him pretty hard and made him want no part of that jedi order rules and ways bullshit anymore. And yoda helped him realize that he was right, it didn't matter that much, rey already had what it takes. So in the end luke did help the resitance, but maintaining his decisions. I think the problem was the way these ideas were presented. That shot of luke activating the saber on bens room was unecessary and a few shots of rey actually training combat would make her proficiencies look less unrealistic. I really love that movie.

Appreciate your points of view, thanks for sharing them. However, I cannot agree with a few points: "fans..fail to recognize the importance of fallable characters..." I don't think the director recognizes it either. The character Rey, so far, IS INfalliable. She's made no mistakes, faced no real adversity (the red guards don't really count as personal adversity, imo). She's made no real mis-steps. "too reliant on callbacks and nostalgia".... Yet, in TLJ, there are several instances of mouse droids. BB8 even disguises himself as a box and hums the mouse droid sound effects. The throne room scene is replicated. Luke, sacrifices hismself as a diversion so his friends can escape - this is exactly what obi-wan did in a new hope. Luke fades away to become one with the force, like Obi-wan and yoda. The chosen one trope? This wasn't a trope until the PT, and was resolved. It's not a trope. The trope really is: force sensitives are born throughout the galaxy in the star wars universe; examples such as all the jedi and padawans in the PT, Ahsoka, Maul, Ventress, Kanan, Ezra, Obi-wan. None of them are skywalker bloodline, yet all are force users, some quite powerful. While there is some new and exciting things in the TLJ, much of what you hightlight as things the director is arguing against - he uses in his movie. The callbacks are choices made by the directors and disney to a.) sell familiar, successful merchandise back to the audience, and b.) because the directors and Disney don't trust the audience to receive something "new". the audience has not been given a chance to consume something "new". Audience/fans are tired of seeing the same old, same old (mouse droids, wilhelm screams, I have a bad feeling about this...). They want something new. This can be achieved without bringing our heroes back just to kill them in the name of progress, with no substance to their "contributions" on screen. But again, your view is well thought out - and I appreciate the effort you put in to sharing it - thanks! Cheers!

Rey faces abandonment issues and struggles with her identity. She doesn't know how shit fits in the universe since she grew up without loving parents, without heritage, without anything but a life of scavenging. Her glaring mistakes are searching for parents in everyone she meets. She immediately saw Han as a father figure, and then lost him. She immediately saw Luke as her chance for a mentor and direction, but he fiercely rejected her. She wants others to tell her what to do rather than forge her own destiny. Nothing is worse than not knowing who you are. The throne room scene is replicated? Where? Be specific.

Okay okay. Luke giving up and Yoda and Obi wan giving up are not the same. At all. Obi wan and Yoda actually lost. They tried to stop emperor and anakin and failed. They had a whole galactic empire hunting them down trying to kill them. They didn’t give up. They were biding time for luke, who they believed to be the chosen one. (As we know it was always anakin). Luke on the other hand, thought about killing Kylo because he might be bad. I’m not mad Luke went into hiding because he failed. He did fail. But he would never think of killing Kylo. He would try to save him. He never gave up on his father and he would never give up on his nephew. Like giving up, didn’t have a whole galaxy looking for him. Because until episode 7, the new republic was the governing force of the galaxy

Yoda: "Into exile I must go. Failed I have". "I cannot teach him. The boy has no patience". "He is too old". Doesn't sound like a man biding his time to teach this exact boy when the time came.Obi Wan, I agree, but not Yoda. And Luke thought of killing him for a SPLIT SECOND. I can't blame him, after the hell of darth vader, seeing the potential for another would be maddening. Reminds me of Mace Windu's intent to kill the emperor, which was far more purposeful an attack. And he said in the movie "you don't need me", which makes me think he didn't give up on Kylo, but that his belief was the jedi shouldn't be involved
@pauloxis88726 жыл бұрын
Yoda on the ship when Padme gives birth: "Until the time is right, disappear we will." UNTIL THE TIME IS RIGHT. Go back and watch ROTS, near the very end of the movie. It's PERFECTLY clear. Kenobi goes into hiding to watch over Luke, Yoda goes into hiding to assure there is a Grandmaster to train a new hope (pun intended) WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT. Kenobi and Yoda fail but don't betray their convictions. They don't even fail because of their convictions, but because they're powerless to stop Vader and Palpatine. BIG difference. And all that after A THOUSAND YEARS of peace in the galaxy under the protection of the Jedi. Failure? I'll take that "failure" any time of the day... Luke, or this "Luke" in TLJ, thinks the Jedi must end, because of their "failure"... Pretty narrow view, don't you think? And let's for a moment consider this to be accurate. When did the Sith, or whatever these new guys call themselves now, say they should end? Makes no sense. No sense at all. No Jedi would think of MURDERING SOMEONE IN THEIR SLEEP. Even for a split second. A Jedi Grandmaster, responsible for the Order? No way Jose. I just wish people would stop making excuses for a VERY poor choice of plot. It makes no sense at all for anyone into the mythos of Star Wars.
@codgob30726 жыл бұрын
Paulo Gomes Which doesn't explain Yoda's hesitancy to train Luke when he finally arrived, even though he clearly knew exactly who he was. There is a contradiction in intent in Yoda's purpose And what does Luke have the power to do by himself as the only jedi master in the galaxy against Snoke and Kylo? How is that a big difference? And Obi Wan at least had a hope in Luke so something to drive purpose, Luke has NO ONE at all. All his students are dead and he doesn't have a child of a force using legend to train in the future, so he has no reason o hold onto hope as Obi Wan did And no Jedi would murder a BEATEN FOE with NO WEAPON, even for a split second, especially since it's "not the jedi way", yet one of the most senior Jedi did. Because they are still human and beliefs/convictions are not always so easy to hold onto when your actions to the contrary could potentially stop a spread of darkness through the whole galaxy. Imagine if mace did kill pal. Would have been far more peace, but would have been built on a murder. Liking the movie isn't "Making excuses for it", I wish more people enjoyed it so I like pointing out contrary points to the grips people have (most I see as unreasonable and narrow minded). I liked the movie and am happy I did. You disliked the movie and are unhappy you didn't. Why exactly do I need to "make excuses"? More than one perspective exists besides your own, I wish most star wars fans arguing over this movie would realise this

I think the title of this video isn’t saying that if you don’t like The Last Jedi you are wrong, I think what he means is that people have a wrong understanding of Johnson’s purpose in creating this film and the various character arcs present in it. I by no means believe he ment to say if you didn’t like the film, your wrong but I would say the title is a bit misleading.
@jeviosoorishas1816 жыл бұрын
But all his commentary is based on false premises: 1. The movie needs to change, or it will become irrelevant. It seems the guy never heard of Joseph Campbell, or how the Star Wars movie is based on universal themes that have concerned humanity for thousands of years. 2. That Rian Johnson's script or writing is filled with nuance. I'll address this later in more detail, but to put it simply: there is little to no nuance in the film, it's why people are so upset. Take the death of Skywalker at the end, okay, kill him if you want, but what force of nature actually led him to die? How does it work? The typical answer: "It doesn't matter." 3. That change, on it's own merit, doesn't need to be as good or better than what it's challenging: This is the primary problem with The Last Jedi. The fact is that Star Wars isn't just movies, it's an entire universe, filled with video games, multiple people telling stories within that universe, that address all sorts of themes. It's a universe that inherently flexible to storytelling. In other words, Star Wars have never been lacking for those interested in experimenting. Yet, It's also this universe that is being rejected in Last Jedi, which is why it's wrong to say Rian is just trying to do something new. Rian's desire to go in a different direction, doesn't stem from a desire to tell a new set of stories in the Star War saga, but rather not to operate within the confines of a universe that the fans have created over the years, a confine that even George Lucas the creator of the universe had to abide by. Hell, as many critics have rightfully pointed out, in Rian's Star Wars, gravity seems to have a nature of it's own. The Last Jedi as opposed to the other 7 movies, is a shift away from classic and universal themes, to moreso postmodern themes that the movie seeks to address (solely). In the classic universe, there are laws, universal truths, purpose etc, in the postmodern one, all that matters is telling one's "own" story, and doing whatever you like. In the classic world, there is logic, there are rules that you have to abide by or else, reality will reward you with consequences (i.e. getting a lost arm, going against a trained and powerful SITH). In the postmodern world, there are no rules, meaning doesn't really exist, the world is incoherent and anything goes...you know, just help the less fortunate and oppressed, and life will be wonderful. The primary criticism of the Last Jedi is very simple, and has little to do with Rian wanting to change the direction of the franchise, but rather Rian's inability to create a coherent argument as to the reason why in the midst of a film that is indeed a visual masterpiece. As is typical with postmodernist arguments, they are convincing only in the realm of deconstruction, but fail epicly in the realm of construction. Unfortunately, the Last Jedi is a prime example of the failure to make a good film worthy of replacing or even being part of the Star Wars legacy.

While watching this video I got the idea you were talking about the episode 8 I was hoping for, before I went to go see it. I left the theater extremely disappointed and I think this is indeed because of expectations but that doesn't change the fact that I was disappointed. The three trailers for the movie were without a doubt the best trailers I had ever seen and all the epic moments teased in the trailer were, at least to me, extremely underwhelming in the movie. They were either turned into a joke (Rey meets Luke), or were simply weird and laughable (Kylo blows up Leia only for her to fly back through space). I was excited to see why Luke was on the island and what he was up to only to find he was there to die. I was excited to see what Snoke would be up to only to see he died. I was excited to see how general Hux commands the first order to hunt down the rebellion only to see him turned into a joke as well. I hear many people saying the choices were subverting our expectations and sure, they did, but mainly because I was expecting something better. I can, however, see why someone would like this movie, but these are 'flaws' I can't look past. So if you enjoyed it: great! I wish I did too. I can't be excited for Episode 9 anymore because there's nothing left for me to be excited about. I don't care about Rey or any of the new characters and the old characters are mostly gone. @professorthox44994 жыл бұрын
A detail would be him making no marks on the salt. But as far as Rian Johnson is concerned, Kylo noticed the saber change. I believe he said Luke did it to enrage Kylo, so he did notice. But if this doesn’t make Kylo suspicious, then that doesn’t make for a good villain. Incompetent villains don’t pose a threat, and Kylo keeps on hampering the First Order.

I really enjoyed the film, I liked it because it wasn't predictable, more like if George R R Martin wrote it lol. And you hit the nail on the head, it's not fan fiction, it was written by story tellers. I think this will absolutely change some people's minds... if they're willing to view it with an open mind. 4:20 Except Luke is very different from these characters. His passion and heart is exactly what made him not give up. Yoda has always been a little distant from people, that's what happens when you live for so long and see so many die. But he is characterized that way to have lost some of his empathy towards people. And actually this is a misinterpretation of Obi Wan's character. He never gave up but unlike Luke is not stubborn. He found a new purpose. He was going to protect Luke so he could eventually have him fight Vader. He didn't give up on the world, but rather gave up on the life he led before in hopes of achieving the ultimate good. But Luke... his defining trait was not giving up. He wouldn't give up even if he should've. That's what made him a compelling character originally. He's flawed, he always has been. I just don't like that the movie made him flawed in ways that contradict a previous characterization. How much more powerful would a broken Luke be if he had fallen in a way that we didn't expect but can clearly understand. That is more heartbreaking. That is sad. Forcing us to suspend our disbelief for a complete character 180 is not as compelling because we are taken out of the story to think but... This doesn't line up with the character's previous mentality. I understand what you're saying... Flaws and failure, people didn't like it because Luke wasn't all powerful. That's not why I don't like it. He could've been just as powerful as any other Jedi... Just don't completely change the character. Don't have him considering killing Ben because he saw a vision of the possibility of him killing people. I think a much more compelling way is to have Luke see the vision and treat Ben differently. He can become overprotective out of fear of losing Ben to the dark side and like many before him overcompensate for the vision they saw and in doing so force that situation to happen. Because now Ben feels like he's already done something wrong like he's already a monster. This could be a compelling motivation as to why Kylo wants to be on the dark side so bad. If everyone sees me as a bad guy why not just become the bad guy (assisted by Snoke's manipulation). All this to say, Luke would not give up, not like he did in this movie. I'm fine with Luke failing that can be a powerful message about heroes not being infallible, I get it. But let the hero fail in ways that the audience can follow. This makes the heroes fall more devastating because not only did it happen but the mistakes made were understandable, human. They make him feel more well rounded as a consequence, not different. Because seeing this non Luke character in the gutter is a problem because I don't feel like this is Luke anyway. But seeing Luke in the gutter seeing our hero fall so far but still retaining elements of Luke and the motivation of Luke is much sadder. Seeing someone in pain is sad seeing someone you care about in pain is heartbreaking.

When I walked in the theatre to watch Star Wars Episode 8, The Last Jedi for the first time, I thought it would be my last Star Wars movie. I felt bitter The Force Awakens played the saga too safe and was nostalgia filled leaving no room for original storytelling. Let alone I felt betrayed by Disney making every prior Star Wars book, game and comic non-canon and labeled them as "legends". That being said my first viewing of The Last Jedi was a meta experience. Luke was upset with the Jedi order just as I was with Disney. Then when Yoda confronted Luke it was a beautiful way of Yoda telling me to let go of the Legends. George Lucas himself never considered the books, comics and games as canon to his films in the first place. However, every Star Wars book, comic, movie, television show and streamed show on Disney+ related to Star Wars they create is and will be created canonical. And when Luke turned around from his anger towards the Jedi and learning from his mistakes, I too also turned around my hatred towards Disney into a deep appreciation and love for them. I felt welcomed back to the franchise and wanted to share with the fandom my love for The Last Jedi. When I expected support and similar feelings, I was treated with hostile negativity from the fans of Star Wars from the Social Media. I was private messaged and messaged publicly in Star Wars groups to "kill myself" for loving The Last Jedi or that I was stupid for my own subjective opinion. It turns out I wasn't the only one. The whole production team of Star Wars was bombarded with emotional, sexual and verbal abuse online for being involved in making the movie. This was from a number of "fans" online and in some cases they were aggressive to others in person regarding those involved and who enjoyed the film. I respect others for their subjective opinion in whether they loved or hated or felt in between regarding anything from the entertainment industry. However, I do not agree with the subjective opinion to exhibit hate on people directly for what they love. Needless to say, no matter how hostile people are for my opinion, Star Wars Episode 8, The Last Jedi is my third favorite Star Wars film of all time.

"Suck it up"? I don't think the origins of Snoke were the most important thing to address with this movie; the movie was meant to be about development of the protagonist (s). But yes, the origin of the most powerful force user in the Galaxy, the person who turned the tables from the New Republic to the First Order, is still INCREDIBLY important to the story. Snoke means nothing now. He was a waste of time in development. If they had left him out it would have made a better story because the conflict of the dark side within Kylo would have been his own, that of a child trying to find his own way, therefore an important part of his early development as a character. By writing off such a potentially deep character like they did, they effectively gave a giant middle finger to any of the fans who cared enough to theorize about him, who he was, where he came from, and what role he had left to play. I understand the desire to be unpredictable, but now what? Who's the real villain anymore? Kylo and Rei are at odds again, but if they leave Kylo as the villain until he dies they once again are throwing away the character with the greatest potential for development.

Damia, sorry but killing off older characters to "pass the torch" is as contrived as your going to get! Rian should have shown some real balls and made Luke the Main Character in the Trilogy. Go against "Age makes one useless". He didn't obviously. It might have been wise had Disney gone into this Trilogy with the idea that the Prior Trilogy actually meant something and there was the Balance of the Force and the defeat of the Empire. The Old Characters, don't need to be defeated by the Dark Side or die by the deeds of the Dark Side, they actually defeated that in Return of the JEDI. BTW, ITS luke who is the Return of the Jedi, not Rey. Luke was the last of the Jedi. The Emperor was worried about Luke not because he was going to become a bum on an Island, but the fact that Luke had what it took to defeat the Sith.

That happened on the original trilogy as well when obi wan and yoda went from being main characters of the previous trilogy to being secondary that helped the main characters. Oh and luke didn't defeat the sith. Vader did. He was the one to kill himself and the emperor. Luke was the one to conflict vader's mind. I think you got the whole point wrong.
@daved37136 жыл бұрын
Ζαφειρης Χριστοφοριδης I didn't say Luke defeated the Sith rather he was the "Return of the Jedi" and obviously the Sith's defeat was caused by his actions with regards to Vader and turning him back. Also, to the point of something being "contrived" this didn't have to be Rey's story. That is contrived, and that was the point I was making. Also, what is Rey's character? To me, its something quite similar to a Mary Sue who barely trained. Its an empty character. I don't mind Star Wars going "forward" but not crapping on the Original Trilogy in the process.
@zafouklariossw2316 жыл бұрын
dave d the movie's message is letting the past die or kill it if you have to. That's what they did they killed the past. He is wrong in his evidence based analysis. Yoda never burnt the ancient Jedi texts. We see them in a drawer on the Millennium Falcon when Finn opens it to get a blanket for Rose. Luke is never witnessed vanishing after his confrontation with Kylo, as they are too busy looking at Rey lift rocks. How does Luke’s legend build and inspire the galaxy? Well, you better hope that Kylo doesn’t execute all those on his side who saw him be made a fool of by his former Master, and that these First Order personnel get shore leave on Cantonica, so that the stable hands can somehow overhear their “stories”. No, this is a bloated chain of contrivances in which I identified 283 faults in my 53 hour analysis. That works out on average as more than two faults per minute. Many of these aren’t subjective takes. We have Holdo talk to Poe and her lips do not synchronise with her speech. That is an unquestionable fault. Subjectivity doesn’t enter into it.

I appreciate your opinions that you put forth in this video. Interestingly, toward the end of this video, you challenged people who didn't like it the first time they saw it to watch it again and again and they'll grow to love it. The thing I find most interesting about that comment is that I actually liked it when I left the theater (with my 6 year old son who loved it). I have since watched it a number of more times and, as i watch it more, I have grown to like it less and less. I had no "Snoke Theories" or "Rey's parents Theories" of my own and didn't really care about the ones that were put forth on numerous internet sites. I watch Star Wars movies for the enjoyment and for a story to be told in a way that evokes emotion in me. Unfortunately, in this episode, there were just too many eye-rolling moments (Mary Poppins Leia) and scenes that make me scratch my head (Why does, all of the sudden Rey feel compelled to "save" Kylo Ren, and yes, it's all of the sudden in the timeline of the movie) to make me think that Rian Johnson is trying to "Let the past die." so he can jump start a franchise that was already one of the biggest in the world. Stories can be told by good storytellers that include previous heroes and that introduce new characters in a way that makes us love the new heroes as much, or more than the old characters (ah la Ahsoka Tano). Rian Johnson's mark on the SW universe missed the mark for most, which is why there's such a huge backlash for this movie. It's not because he "let past die", but because he paid no attention, or respect, to it.

I feel like Rey trying to save Kylo was partially because of her teachings with Luke, about her bringing up that he brought Vader back from the Dark Side and such in the midst of his lessons. This is in keeping with Reys wish to be special, though she turns out to be nothing more than what she was....a junk dealer who had the potential to be a hero and a Jedi. The mental link between the two and her visions, expecting him to turn good may also have convinced her that she could change him(along with his understanding after her visit to the Force...cave? Underwater pit? You know the one I mean).

The only backlash comes from a deep core of SW fans but most people and critics loved the film and it was critically acclaimed for a reason. Unfortunately those hateful starwars fans are the ones spreading the flames most, people who liked the film have little reason to bitch or make themselves known. The haters are the one heard around the world.

The thing is, Rian Johnson wanted to create his own idea of what the story should be when the beginning was already in place. He practically spat in the face of JJ Abrams because he completely threw much of what was already happening in the story out of the window. He decided that what JJ had set up did not matter compared to his own vision of what he wanted to do.

Cloudkit the Mailman What in your mind did Rian Johnson throw out the window that JJ Abrams set up? You're assuming that the story was going to be a certain way after episode 7. Get over it and move forward, before the hate swells inside you.

The powerful ending moment of TFA became to be joke scene of TLJ ,where're the Knight of Ren, mystery of Snoke , and so on. A lot of things JJ built were threw away. Because this is a trilogy, why each episode doesn't blend in?
@maxgoshko69256 жыл бұрын
ธเนศ ศรีสุรภานนท์ just because he took the story in a direction that was unexpected and even potentially different from what jj had originally intended, it does not mean he spat in his face if disrespected his vision. Also keep in mind that jj was a producer and a writer , in some part, of this movie. The point of film, and art in general, is to allow people to express ideas through the medium as they see fit. I personally felt that rian Johnson used Star Wars as a platform to tell a beautiful story about personal discovery and understanding. Through this, this is the most artistic and purposeful Star Wars film there has been. It told a story that wasn't just a continuation of the story, like a soap opera or something, it was an actual piece of art that made statements.

I completely agree with this. My beef is not with this part of the movie, it's the following: -killing off the main villain so unceremoniously, without talking about who or what he actually is. -creating an entire irrelevant subplot. -using that subplot to plothole your way into detecting STEALTH shuttles. -Hyping up someone's lineage to then say "yeah you came from nothing." -forcing a shitty romance that developed in less than 24 hours. -bringing Phasma back just to have her bitch slapped again.

For me the killing of Snokes was the high moment of the movie, infinitely better than a 45 minute boss battle where you know the ending.
@mrdrprofjohnny42256 жыл бұрын
Yeah i agree with pretty much all of that. Although, you should look at the Snoke dying scene again, because it too was probably the highlight of the film for me. It's great development for Kylo and it actually makes sense for how Snoke was able to be deceived. That being said, I wish they wouldnt have killed snoke because HE WAS SO FUCKING BADASS AND SCARY and now all we have is a (although definitely my favorite sequel character by far) bitchy teenage whiny asshole Kylo Ren as the big baddie. He just isnt intimidating as he keeps being beaten by an untrained "Mary Rey Sue"
@cubeDeseption6 жыл бұрын
Well, some points of yours are explained in this video, and while I agree with some, I can´t disagree more with some. What made the film so special is that it scraped our expectations. Only because the movie wasn´t what you expected doesn´t make it a bad movie. Reys parents being nobodies made it special in a certain way because it created the feeling that everybody can be special and that your parents aren´t deciding about your fate and Snoke getting killed off was unexpected and it really fucked all theories and while I wanted some explanation who he was I am sure it will be explained sometimes.
@finleyyoung53046 жыл бұрын
For me I really liked Snoke being killed off because I didn't care who he was like I didn't care who the emperor was.
@mrdrprofjohnny42256 жыл бұрын
"What made the film so special is that it scraped our expectations." - This was the only reason the film will be memorable at all. Surely you do agree that just because it subverted our expectations does not make it a good film. It was a bad film for many reasons, and wouldn't have been as bad a film if the film didn't subvert our expectations unnecessarily often. Defying expectations appears silly after awhile because you start to second guess every tiny decision that is about to be made, just because it may turn around "unexpectedly." Also, being a Skywalker doesn't decide your fate, it just makes you a powerful force-user for some reason (probably genetic). I call to mind that just because Anakin and Luke were both Skywalkers, Luke was good and Anakin was evil, fairly different fates in my opinion. To emphasize my first point, a movie isn't immediately good because it subverts our expectations, it needs to have a strong and intriguing story as well, which The Last Jedi doesn't (except for the Kylo bits IMO).

Maz Kanata ..asked "who's the girl" to Han ...screen cuts before Han answers ... when Kylo learns BB8 was helped by a Girl he goes ape shit like he might have some insight as to who Rey might be ....the mystery of Rey was set up in TFA fans didn't create it. Audiences don't care who she is what their looking for is an answer as to why Rey is supergirl ... what gives her such control over the force ...it took 3 years for Luke the son of the chosen one to lift a rock ... and Rey is moving mountains after 3 weeks
