Welcome to Puerto Barrios, a small city nestled in the southeast of Guatemala, just off the Gulf of Honduras and bordering Honduras itself. Is Puerto Barrios the Guatemalan Caribbean Jewel? Not quite. Join me as I venture off the beaten path and explore this unique destination that holds its own charm.
In my search for lesser-known destinations, I stumbled upon Puerto Barrios, and it intrigued me. A little research revealed that cruise ships have started visiting this hidden gem since the beginning of the century, which sparked my interest further. The images I saw online were breathtaking, and I knew I had to experience the real Puerto Barrios for myself.
Upon arrival, I must admit that my expectations weren't entirely met. This city is marked by a distinct air of poverty, and its major industry revolves around the port. Finding suitable accommodation was a challenge, leading us to book an Airbnb with limited options. Although it's a nice place, it falls short of typical Airbnb standards, but we make the most of it.
Our temporary home is modest, offering glimpses of the sea, but the idyllic beaches depicted in pictures remain a distant dream. Nevertheless, embracing my backpacker spirit, I set out to explore Puerto Barrios.
As I wander through the city's streets, we encounter a mix of run-down buildings and familiar establishments like Domino's, highlighting the city's uniqueness. A visit to the indoor market gives me a glimpse into the lives of the locals, showcasing the authentic Guatemala away from tourist hotspots and incessant street vendors.
While there may not be a plethora of activities for tourists, Puerto Barrios emanates a certain charm that captures my heart. It's an unfiltered glimpse into real Guatemalan life, away from the tourist traps and hustle and bustle.
So, if you're an intrepid traveler like me, keen on exploring the unexplored, Puerto Barrios might just be the place for you. Experience the authentic Guatemala, interact with friendly locals, and immerse yourself in a different side of the Caribbean.
I am an older backpacker travelling the world proving that backpacking is not just for the younger generation.

Yeah we had a different experience there! I have lived in Guatemala for 2 years and my fiancé is Guatemalan. Both of us thought it was cleaner than we expected. Also, my favorite part of exploring in puerto barrios was in the Garifuna neighborhood. There was fantastic food which h is so different from the rest of guatemala and amazing street art in the neighborhood. We went to a bar with live Garifuna music and had the best time! One thing I will agree with is that the accommodation situation is awful. Everything is overpriced and bad. 😂

Judging by what were shown on the clip, I found the place quite charming for its genuineness. It was what it was -- the real deal. There were no tourist traps. I'm most impressed by the tranquil atmosphere. The place in general seemed relatively safe.

I agree with everything you have written. I felt totally safe and the people were so friendly, but for backpackers who are travelling around Guatemala, there was nothing there to do. Even if they wanted to relax on a beach, that was over 40 minutes away. I’m still glad I went though :)

@@olderbackpacker How about exploring the undersea world of the legendary Caribbean? You don't need a beach for that. In fact, rocks are often better because there's little to no silt in the water from the wave action resulting in better visibility. And that's the main reason to go to the Caribbean.

Hello, I was in Guatemala for nearly 2 months and I travelled all over the country and it was amazing. But in Puertos Barrios where the video was made, there was nothing for backpackers to do. There were no hostels, no beaches, no hiking. That’s what I meant, just the town not the country.

Yeah it’s really run down unfortunately, no body cares about creating conscience on how to keep it clean. Maybe you should tried go to the mountain explore what nature had to offer out side the city. Thank you for sharing 👍

Thank you for your comment :) Unfortunately while I was in Puerto Barrios, I asked if there was anywhere I could go and I was informed that I should take the boat to Livingstone or Rio Dulce. as they said there was no tourism.

Lol you're so wrong. I lived in Los Angeles California for 35 years and moved to Puerto barrios. In Los Angeles you find homeless people everywhere and the streets are filthy. The streets here are clean I have only seen one homeless guy. I've been here for six months already and you're completely wrong

Thank you for your comment my friend. I agree that Guatemala is an amazing country, and I loved backpacking around the whole country.Puerto Barrios was a town that had charm. If backpackers want to go to visit the beaches and hotels, they need to travel out of the town and have money. I will be going back to Puerto Barrios again one day as I would want to spend more time to see the outer areas, and I will do another video when I return :)

Is there any area of Guatemala's Caribbean coast with clear water? It should be far from any river runoff. Rivers and water visibility tend to not be friends.
