@HemeReview Audio-only episode A Grandma Collapsed From Abdominal Pain. This Is What Happened To Her Colon: anchor.fm/chubbyemu/episodes/...
Psyllium husk fiber supplement can be part of a healthy diet, but it must be taken correctly. It has been shown to lower cholesterol levels to an extent, but is best in combination with a proper diet. Always take care to mix psyllium husk with more than enough water. It can become thick and cause problems if it isn't.

I've been taking psyllium husk in a smoothie every morning for 10 years with absolutely no problems. I had my gallbladder removed and My God I was never the same. My cholesterol even went up after the removal. I didn't want to take cholestrol meds so doctor said to try psyllium. I was so amazed at how much better I felt. I will never go without it. It dropped my cholestrol by 50 points and helps my husband with his blood sugar numbers. I no longer had bathroom problems because of my missing gallbladder. We only take it once a day, about 1 and a half teaspoons. No one is going to scare me out of it. It has changed my life. My doctor said you'd have to take a whole lot of it and not drink much for a blockage to occur.

Psyllium is a literal life saver for many people. Just watch your dosage (usually not more than 5-10g per serving), drink plenty of water with it, and it won't hurt most to also take a probiotic (25-100B CFU) and magnesium (200-400mg at night) with it as well. These 3 supplements can make a world of difference

I've suffered from IBS since I was a teenager. It wasn't until my early 30's that a doctor turned me on to Psyllium and basically my IBS went away. I've found for myself I need to take twice the recommended dosage to have good results. I drink 16-24 oz of water with it. Been taking this dosage nightly for years without any problems. I still often go 3-4 days between bowel movements, but no more burning pain, cramps, and large amounts of mucus with my BMs.

Got an ad before this video claiming that people have 5-20lbs of “toxic poop” in their body, presumably to sell me some sort of “colon cleanse”. Pretty easy to see how people can end up making bad choices with fiber supplements when they’re so bombarded with bad advice and snake oil.
@revenevan11

Yeah horrible misinformation ads like that should be illegal (if they aren't already technically). I always report that ad on KZfaq as "inappropriate" every time I get it. It's a shame KZfaq doesn't have an option for dangerous/hateful misinformation in the "stop seeing this ad" menu. But for now I just report all those "health" ads that willingly peddle nonesense that they themselves know to be at *best* problematic outdated ideas which are often ineffective, harmful, or promote eating disorders.

Whenever that ad comes up (bizarre that it's been multiple times at this point) I have to ask, what is toxic poop? I mean as compared to regular poop? Non-toxic poop? Can I start legally including this shit in human safe products? Like what the heck, I would say all poop is fairly toxic, that's why it's poop and not well.. anything else? Technically it may just be waste rather than toxic but still. Strange problem to have with a stupid "health" ad but for some reason that's what sticks with me. It just keeps making me think of Elmer's glue (non-toxic product) for some reason, and imagining non toxic poop in the next second. Arguhh Gonna have to join you on the reporting.

I use psyllium fiber in my own bread as well as smoothies. When I first looked it up online almost every recipe warned readers NOT to overuse psyllium fiber and to use exact measurements because it's so potent. I didn't believe it until I saw it for myself when I accidentally added a little bit too much to my smoothie once and it turned into a solid block with the consistency of concrete.
@boggers

How much psyllium would you use in your bread recipe? I ask because I followed a low carb flour-less dough recipe today for a pizza base, which had quite a lot of psyllium in it, and no water at all, so this video has me a bit worried, unless baking it in bread creates a whole other dynamic
@girlanonymous
@girlanonymous 11 ай бұрын
In your bread too? A bit overkill..be careful with this stuff!
@wolfferoni
@wolfferoni 11 ай бұрын
@@girlanonymous It's probably fine. Probably not overkill. The vast majority of the population don't eat the recommended daily intake of fiber. You can't use that much in food without adding a lot of liquid to compensate. That being said, don't increase fiber content all at once because it will likely cause GI discomfort since your body isn't used to it
@boggers
@boggers 11 ай бұрын
@@wolfferoni in my case with the low carb pizza dough it worked out just fine. the "dough" is made from 75% cheese, so a adding a whole bunch of fiber was probably a good call for digestion. The psyllium also holds it together nicely and gives it a more elastic quality, but after making the recipe a few times, I found that you don't need anywhere near the amount that the recipe asked for, I think they said 1/2 a cup, but a tablespoon is enough.

Wow. Never would have thought of this being such an issue. My son has to take Miralax daily to keep things moving, but we tried lots of things prior to getting everything under control, including Metamucil. We were never given this much information on how important it is to mix with the proper amount of water, especially the "at first " part. Thankfully we never had any issues with it, but I can totally see myself not waiting long enough after mixing, to allow it to absorb all the water, and therefore possibly creating an issue. Very glad to have this information now. Thank you!

you dont want to wait. you want to drink it right away. 1 tablespoon stirred into a FULL glass of water, and then you can quickly drink a water chaser right afterwards just in case. the more water it has the more it will have to absorb so it can move more easily through. you just want it to be fully and well diluted thats all.

@@Dutchess80 if you use pumpkin, use canned organic pumpkin or be sure to use a baking pumpkin from the store or garden, not a Halloween pumpkin. That is not an edible species, except for the seeds. I've taken Psyllium husk fiber for many years. I take double the recommended amount but only once per day. I have found that it is important to take it with a good sized meal where you drank lots of liquids with that meal. This helps to dilute it in your stomach and prevents it from causing backups. If used in this way, it has been amazing at helping my constipation.

Excellent video. I have learned to be careful when taking Metamucil, which can be a godsend, but sometimes, but sometimes, I notice that some days, when I eat just a little bit, I feel so uncomfortably full, I think it might be the Metamucil, even though I always drink plenty of water with it (and plenty of water in general). I dehydrate quickly and I think that the Metamucil may require much more water than the 8 oz that's listed. Again, I'm guessing, but my body does what it does.

Interesting . . . Back in the late 80's, I was diagnosed with diverticular disease, and was prescribed atropine to help with cramps I was getting. Not sure where I read it (before the internet), but I read that increasing your fibre intake, would help with the diverticular symptoms. To cut a long story short, I managed to find some unprocessed psyllium husks at a health food shop and decided to give it a try. Since then, and now some 30 years later, I have been taking approximately 30g of psyllium husks on a regular daily basis. Currently, I take it with about 300ml of full cream milk (+ 15g of whey protein), but in the past I've had it with V8 or with fruit juice. Since I started, the only times I had any diverticular problems, have been when I've run out and can't immediately get more. I guess that I've been mixing it with enough fluids, and drinking enough fluids during the day, as constipation has never been a problem, in fact, I am incredibly regular, and have 2 and sometimes 3 bowel movements a day . . .

I remember when I was on methadone(and this very constipated) I started taking 3 or 4 tablets of this(or possible a different type of fiber, I can't remember.) However, I also would not drink enough water. Each morning on the way to work I would get horrible stomach pains(I assume from gas and/or trying to push along a slight blockage in my intestines) until I would finally be able to go to the bathroom at work. This went on for like 4 or 5 days before I realized what was causing it(at the time I was taking several prescription and OTC medications, including more than one laxative, stool softener, fiber supplement, etc., was changing what I was taking, or how much of it and when, so I didnt recognize and isolate the problem right away. Not to mention that I was used to having stomach pains due to being on methadone(and other prescription medications such as trazadone that can cause constipation.) Now I take 2 in the morning everyday with a lot of water, and sometimes two at night, and sometimes use colace(a stool softener.)

Usually, it’s 1tsp (5g) psyllium husk per 8oz of liquid. So for 78oz (2L) of water, the normal dose would be just over 9tsp/3Tlb/45g of psyllium husk fiber. That example added 1lb or 453g! That’s 10x the recommended dosage for that volume of water. A supplement that seems so innocuous becomes very harmful to the body. Thank you for pointing that out to people.

When I read the comments replying to a personal experience that the commenters do not agree with I often become very annoyed at the ignorance displayed. The human condition is extremely complex. Some people - including doctors - seem to think that there is a graph for every condition. Name the problem or disorder - open the graph - establish where the patient is on the graph - move across to the other axis and read the solution = x gms of this 3 times a day. Problem solved. Next. Doesn't happen that way - and it is patently absurd to even suggest it might. Personal life experience..... My brother had a heart bypass - subsequently prescribed statins - no issues. A decade later I had a heart double bypass - prescribed statins - at a low 20 mg dosage no issues - dosage increased to 80 mg caused major problems. The doctor insisted I must continue taking statins. I disagreed and stated that I could care less if it was a wonder drug for the general population - it it caused me problems it was off the list. It is highly significant that I compared my brother's situation because it takes genetics out of the argument and focuses entirely on the individual response. 15 years later I am in peak health and my cardiologist claims I am a "special case" - but that I would still be better off with statins despite the fact that the major problems caused disappeared after a few months. During an interim period I was advised that I was at risk - that a "different" statin would be the solution (whaaaat?). I reluctantly agreed - after all you go to a professional to get a professional opinion that should be far superior to your own. Initially no issues - inside 2 months the MAJOR problems re-occurred - I abstained and it took nearly 8 months off the statin to return to normal. My only suggestion is... do not robotically accept a simple solution offered to what may be a very complex problem. If the doctor picks up the scrip pad within seconds of your description an alarm should trigger. The doctor may be right - but he is not God. The only medical condition graph relevant is the one with your name on it.

When I lived in FL, we used to feed about a cup of physillium husk fiber to each horse about once per month to help clear the sand they ingested with the grass. Too much sand in a horse’s gut can cause a serious problem called “sand colic”. Tack shops sell a fiber husk product for horses, but it’s extremely expensive and the rotational feeding instructions are so complicated a lot of people can’t follow them correctly. In comes husk fiber for people- easy to administer and cheap, a whole can lasts 6+ months.

I had constipation problems. My solution was Ghee 1 teaspoon, hot water and 1/2 teaspoon sea salt one hour after each meals. Was a blessing!
